ELECTRICAL DESIGN BASIS
1.0Electrical Design Philosophy: Salient Features
The Electrical design basis broadly outlines the minimum requirements for the design, selection,
sizing and installation of the electrical equipments and associated systems of the installation.
The electrical system shall be designed to ensure:
Safety to personnel and equipments.
Reliability of service.
Minimum fire risk.
Ease of maintenance and convenience of operation.
Adequate provision for future expansion and modification.
Maximum interchangeability of equipments.
Automatic protection of all electrical equipments through selective relaying system.
Fail safe features.
Adequate provision for future expansion and modification.
1.1 Site Conditions
All electrical equipments and accessories / materials are to be suitable for installation and
operation under dusty, humid, corrosive and hostile environment with special degree of hazards.
Min / Max ambient temperatures, RH, Height from MSL and other related environmental
parameters for site are mentioned elsewhere in bid package.
1.2 General Safety
The electrical system should incorporate safety margins to ensure that the installation is safe
under all operating conditions, including those associated with the start up and shut down of
equipment and throughout intervening shut down periods. The emphasis in equipment
specification shall be on operability, prevention of accident / fault and functionality for the
intended design life. All insulating materials specified for the equipment should be non-toxic
2.0 Codes and Standards
The specification of design documents, material and system performance is based upon the
requirements of the latest versions of all applicable national / international standards, codes,
regulations and code of practices being followed by the industries. Some of them are listed
below:
IS - Indian Standards: Specifications and code of practices of Bureau of Indian Standards.
IEC - International Electro Technical Council
IEEE - Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
ASTM - American Society for Testing of Materials
Utilization Category:
Electrical loads are divided into following three classes according to use:
Continuous Load - Which draws power at continuous rate.
Intermittent Load - Which draws power as per duty cycle for short duration.
Stand-by Load - Which is connected with power supply and ready to act as and when required.
Load Assessment:
All electrical loads are to be developed by the contractor based on estimated load identified in
the equipment list. The data sheet should specify maximum power requirement. In evaluating
load summary, utilization category is applied as following:
Total Load:
i)
ii)
Intermittent Load - 50 % of the total intermittent load or the largest intermittent load
whichever is higher.
iii)
5. LT POWER DISTRIBUTION
5.1) Point Of Supply:
Power for Rio Tinto is to be tapped at 315 Amp ATS .Connection between mains & DG power yet
to be carried out by Developer.
Design Basis Report: MEP Services for RIO TINTO
Electrical room location will be as indicated in the drawing.
The LT power shall subsequently be distributed to all load centers after passing through safety
devices providing protection to both human beings and equipment.
Panel boards will confirm to the relevant Indian standard.
The Power panels shall be fabricated from MS sheet steel 16 gauge and shall be of
compartmental design. The main supporting framework shall be of angle iron or fabricated by 14
SWG MS Sheet. The panel will be self-supporting design, dust and vermin proof, IP52 and fully
inter locked with isolating switches. The panel-mounted switches shall have Interlock defeat for
testing and inspection. The board frames will be fabricated using suitable mild steel structural
sections or pressed & shaped cold rolled sheet steel of thickness not less than 2.0mm.& the
frames be enclosed by cold rolled sheet steel of thickness not less than 1.65 mm, Smoothly
finished, leveled & free from flaws. Doors & covers shall be made of cold rolled sheet steel of
thickness not less than 1.65 mm .Stiffeners shall be provided wherever necessary.
The panel shall be powder coated comprising of seven tank pretreatment ,degreasing and descaling in sulphuric acid etc. & shall be finished with powder coated paint over two coats of red
oxide primer. Powder coating synthetic enamel paint for smooth finish. The color of paint shall be
as per designer. The panel shall be designed so as to facilitate inspection, cleaning and repairs.
The clearance between phase to phase and phase to earth or metal parts shall be as per relevant
IS standards.
The metering instruments like volt meter, ammeter etc. shall be flush mounted and shall be of
1.0 class accuracy .Al indication lamps shall be of LED type & al metering should be digital type.
Al energy meter will be with RS485 port & will have provision to BMS connectivity.
The bus bars will be Air insulated and made up of high conductivity, electrolytic Copper
complying with the requirement of IS 5082:1981 and will have a fault withstand capacity of
based on the short circuit rating at that point maximum 50 KA/1 Sec & .
The current density will not exceed 0.8 amp per sqmm for Aluminum & 1.25 amp per sqmm for
copper. Al bus bars shall be fuly screened by means of PVC sleeves in their own compartment
running throughout the length of the Panel.
The name plates for each feeders will be of engraved design and pasted to the respective switch
gear. The letters will not be less than 10 mm size for individual feeders and not less than 18 mm
for the main feeders. Al switchgear to be mounted in the panel will be as per schedule of
quanties.
The maximum voltage drop of the system will be less than 4% ,Detailed short current
calculations will be done once the fault level is established by developer at their end. The rating
of Panels & switchgear will be based on these calculations.
Metering will be provided at each end of the power feed. Al these meters will have RS485 port &
will be communicated to BMS system.
Lighting DBs will be provided on each floor depending on the loads & no of light Fixtures. Each
DB will have one no of TP +2N MCB (Double Neutral being Led lighting which act as nonlinear
