Introduction
Macro base stations are conventionally used to
serve all traffic models to outdoor as well as indoor
users
Increasing number of high data rate users creates
challenge to serve all users satisfactorily
Especially throughput to indoors may suffer from
high path loss and low spectral efficiency

Introduction
One possible solution could be the usage of
femtocells
These are low-power wireless access points that
operate in licensed spectrum to connect standard
mobile devices to a mobile operators network
using residential digital subscriber line (DSL) or
cable broadband connections
The idea is that femtocells are plug-and-play
devices installed by users

Introduction
A solution to the interference problem could be
radio resource managment (RRM) with selforganizing network (SON) techniques
Self-configuration and self optimization is needed
for plug-and-play devices
RRM with SON techniques means that there is
coordination with access points in the vicinity and
they can adjust the usage of radio resources to
improve network quality

Introduction
The main focus of master thesis is in different
resource allocation methods for femto users
Resource allocation aims to interference
avoidance between access points
Interference avoidance is done in frequency
domain

Resource allocation methods

1) Opportunistic resource allocation
2) Resources are allocated taking into account the
femto-femto interference
3) Resources are allocated taking into account the
femto-macro interference
4) Resources are allocated taking into account the
femto-macro/femto interference

Conclusion
In dual-stripe layout macro interference is the most
significant for femto users
In 5x5 grid the femto interference is the most
significant for femto users
All interference avoidance methods provide gain
compared to opportunistic resource allocation
without interference coordination
