I would like to express my special thanks of

gratitude to my teacher Mr. R.B. Chettri who gave
me the golden opportunity to do this wonderful
project on the topic Growth of plant in different
quality of soil which also helped me in doing a lot

of Research and i came to know about so many

new things I am really thankful to them.
Secondly I would also like to thank my parents
and friends who helped me a lot in finishing this
project.
I am making this project not only for marks but to
also to increase my knowledge.
THANKS AGAIN TO ALL WHO HELPED ME.

About the plant

The tomato is the edible, often red fruit/berry of
the nightshade Solanum
lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato
plant. The species originated in the South
American Andes and its use as a food originated
in Mexico, and spread throughout the world
following theSpanish colonization of the
Americas. Its many varieties are now widely

grown, sometimes in greenhouses in cooler

climates.
The tomato is consumed in diverse ways,
including raw, as an ingredient in many dishes,
sauces, salads, and drinks. While it is botanically
a fruit, it is considered a vegetable for culinary
purposes (as well as under U.S. customs
regulations, see Nix v. Hedden), which has
caused some confusion. The fruit is rich
in lycopene, which may have beneficial health
effects.

Basic characteristics:
1. The tomato belongs to the nightshade
family, Solanaceae.
2. The plants typically grow to 13 meters (3
10 ft) in height and have a weak stem that often
sprawls over the ground and vines over other
plants.
3. It is a perennial in its native habitat, although
often grown outdoors in temperate climates as
an annual.

4. An average common tomato weighs

approximately 100 grams.

Quality of
soil
The different qualities of soil were used
to grow the tomato plant. The two
different types of soil that were used to
grow the plant were
1. Garden soil
2. Roadside soil
The water holding capacity of garden
soil is much more than the roadside
soil. It is so because there is a large
amount of organic matter and certain
extra nutrients present in the garden

soil. Also garden soil is provided with

extra manure than the roadside soil.
Therefore the following observations
were made by growing the plant in
these different types of soil.
The images of the observation of the
plants of different days are given.

Aim: To observe the growth of

plant(Tomato) in different quality of soil
(garden/roadside soil).
Materials required: Garden soil,
Roadside soil, pot,
Tomato seeds
Theory: The plant was grown under
different soils i.e. roadside soil and
garden soil. The plant was provided
with all the requirements such as
sunlight, air, water etc. Observing the
plant for near about a month, it was
found that the best growth of plant
took in the garden soil as it contained
more manure than roadside soil.
Procedure:
1. Two pots were taken in order to
fill with the two types of soil.

2. One of the pots was filled with

garden soil whereas the other
one was filled with roadside
soil.
3. Tomato seeds were sown in
both the pots.
4. One hole was made in each pot
so that the seeds do not get
rotten inside.
5. The pots were provided with all
the necessary requirement for
a month.
6. The following observations
were made after a month.
On the first day:
Garden soil:

Roadside soil:

On the mid day of the month:

On the final day:

Observation

The observation on the final day

was made that the growth of
tomato plant took more favorably
in the garden soil whereas it did
take in the roadside soil also but
not so favorably.

Conclusion

This project shows the

observation made while growing
the plant in different soils. The
experiment went easily and it
provided me with a lot of
knowledge.
And finally I thank my teacher for
providing me an opportunity for
this experiment.
