UMIs:
1. How successful was the United Nations (UN) in stabilizing the
conflict between Arabs and Jews in Palestine (Explain)?
The UN created the Partition Plan for Palestine which paved the way for
Israel to declare its independence in 1948. Even though measures were
taken, the Arab-Jew conflict could not be completely resolved.
2. What were the main causes of the Cold War?

The annexation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania by the Soviet Union


The installation of communist governments in Albania, Bulgaria,
Romania, Hungary, Poland, and Czechoslovakia
Stalin didn't keep the agreements he had made with the Western Allies
about holding free elections after the war in countries occupied by the
Soviet Army. This scared the West, who believed that Stalin would try
to take over the world by force (communism).

3. What strategies did POTUS Eisenhower use to slow the spread


of communism?
The US implemented the Containment Policy through:
The Marshall Plan, which provided economic aid to restore Western
Europes economic health.
The creation of West Germany, which combined the US, British, and
French sectors of occupied Germany.
The establishment of NATO, a military alliance between the US,
Canada, and Western Europe.
An airlift in response to a Soviet blockade of West Berlin.
4. Why was Senator McCarthy able to generate so much attention
with his accusations?
McCarthys overpowering nature made it very difficult for anyone to speak
up. Also Fear of Communist subversion was intensified by 2 cases of
apparent espionage:
o Former high-ranking State Department official, Alger Hiss,
supplied Soviet agents with classified US documents
o Julius and Ethel Rosenberg apparently passed atomic secrets to
Soviet agents

The government responded by forming the National Aeronautics and Space


Administration (NASA) to coordinate American endeavors to explore space.
Congress also passed the National Defense Education Act, which provided
more federal $ for science and foreign language instruction in public schools

the US and the Soviet Union?
Besides the US and Soviet Union, the countries in NATO (Great Britain,
France, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Denmark,
Norway, Iceland, and Portugal) and the Warsaw Pact also got involved.
2. How did the US govs response to Cold War tensions lead to
limitations on civil liberties?
During the Cold War the US Government put issues such as Civil Liberties on
the back burner. This slowed the process down.
3. How did the development of atomic technology affect daily life in
the US?
The development of atomic technology led to the National Defense
Education Act, which pumped billions into science and math education, a
direct result and reaction of the development of nuclear weapons.
