A Note From Mrs. Mummert

When students returned from winter break, students that have been making good PAX choices had their second end of the nine weeks popcorn party in music class.
During the month of January, the first grade music class had been filled with high, low, big, small, snowmen,
snowflakes, and mittens. We learned The Snowman song and played it on boomwhackers. We also read The
Mitten by Jan Brett and added some music and sounds to the story. Students also were introduced to the
divided beat (eighth notes) as they studied and sang The Bumblebee Song.
Second graders in music class have also been busy making music as they sang the song Auld Lang Syne and
played chords with the tone bells. They learned The Elevator song and played the melody on boomwhackers.
They continued their study of reading and performing sol and mi melodies and reading rhythms-quarter note/
rest and eighth notes with the song Snowflake Students also sang and played the Closet Key singing game,
which reviewed soft and loud.

Getting Fit with Mr. Haupert

This month in Physical Education, we will be building upon our knowledge of fitness. We have already discussed in class the; muscular system and the cardiovascular system. We are going to learn
about which exercises are good for those two different systems. As well as build our knowledge of
strength, endurance and flexibility. The last two weeks of the month will be our fitness test,
which will consists of; push-ups, sit-ups, sit & reach, shoulder stretch and the pacer running test.

Mr. Romighs Art Corner

The art room is back to full speed after the winter break. The delays and snow days have
made things a little hectic, but we are getting caught up and the students are creating some great
artworks. The first graders are completing their texture study and have begun to finish their
Klimt style Baby in a Quilt pictures and will soon be ready to start something new. The second
graders are done with their warm and cool landscapes and will next be learning about the pop art
movement and will begin work on a Andy Warhol style artwork that will incorporate knowledge of
complimentary colors. The students portfolios are beginning to fill up with great works of art which
means that the art show will be great!

Title 1 News
The Riley Mentor program is working well!!! We currently have 15 mentors who work with our students in reading and math, We also are lucky enough to have 9 Police Mentors who volunteer time to
work with our students in reading and math. We also are lucky to have 3 former Fostoria School
teachers who will be starting to do a Reciprocal Teaching project with our first grade students
starting the end of January. If you are interested in mentoring our Future Leaders, please contact Carol Wines at Riley School. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Beginning February 9th, we will kickoff our fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by collecting spare change. Students will be encouraged to bring in
any amount of money to donate to the society. The amount can be as little as pennies. Riley has proudly raised close to $2,500 over the past three years to help
those in need with various blood disorders.
Classrooms will compete to raise the most money and will earn the prize of a catered lunch from the Olive Garden. In addition to the top raising class, Riley has
set a goal of raising a total of $700.00 for the building. If we reach the building
goal, the teachers of the top three classrooms will get SLIMED by the students!!
Good luck Riley students! Have fun collecting and remember this is for a great
cause.
