Summary:
The water supply boards are an important part of modern city. Majority of the water consumed by
the city are supplied by this board. The consumer type either residential or commercial. This water
supply are provided at a fixed rate of flow.
With ever increasing population density, the water scarcity is prevalent. This forces the consumers to
draw more water by using water pumps, which is considered as water theft. Hence, this project proposes
to develop an embedded systems based remote water flow monitoring and theft prevention system by
recording the water flow rates at the consumer end.
In order to implement this water flow monitoring system, each consumer end should be provided
with an embedded systems hardware consisting of a microcontroller, sensor, actuator are other supporting
hardware. The system works by recording the flow rate using a flow sensor and transmits the data to a
remote monitoring station using wireless transmitter. It is also provided with an electrically operated
solenoid valve which closes when the consumer violates. This accomplished by the central processing
station, hence stopping the water supply once the flow rate exceeds the regulated limit. It also employs a
GSM module so that the theft information can be intimated to concerned authorities on their mobile phone
for immediate action.
