2014 Annual Report

PROVIDING PROGRAMMING, ENCOURAGEMENT AND

MOMENTUM IN SUPPORT OF YOUR GOALS AT EVERY AGE.

Dear Cadillac Community

Since your YMCA opened in December of 2009, weve continued to
push for your causes of Healthy Living, Youth Development, and Social
Responsibility. With over 66% and 76% of Missaukee and Wexford counties
respectively either overweight or obese, and over 59% of our area students
having at least one high risk factor in their lives, its clear these causes need to
become movements in our community. Its also clear that it will take the whole
community to achieve them.

In 2014 your YMCA continued to reach deep into our community to fight for
these causes and invest in all the generations. With Mercy Hospital we
strengthened the Senior Fit program. With Cadillac Area Public Schools,
Pine River Schools, and other partners we offered an After-school Tutoring
Program that included a healthy snack and vigorous play daily. With dedicated
volunteers we started a Flag Football league for youth aged 6 to 8.
Thanks to the generosity of a local business leader, E.S. Fawcett, we started a
free membership program for all 7th graders at CAPS schools in 2013-2014.
The program was so successful other community leaders including Advanced
Foot and Ankle, CoBank, Chuck and Marge Dumanois, and Glenn and Reanna
Kelly felt compelled to continue it into the current school year.
Perhaps your YMCAs biggest growth over the 2014 year was the expansion in
Early Childhood. Your YMCA now hosts Dillon Daycare and three preschool
programs including tuition based, Headstart, and Greatstart which all developed
as a response to needs in your community.
One of the most impressive ways we see your Y Cause growing into a movement
is the strong response of so many dedicated volunteers. In 2014 your YMCA
had over 250 volunteers from your community provide over 5,200 hours of
service. Clearly your YMCA would not have as great an impact without their
dedicated service.
Now I invite YOU to get more deeply involved in your cause. Check out
the incredible, life changing programming that occurs within and outside of
the YMCA walls represented in this report. Dont just find a healthy living, youth
development or social responsibility program to participate with, join us in the
fight for making your causes, the movements in the community.

After-school Tutoring
K-4th Grade After-school Tutoring Program
Five elementary schools across Cadillac Area Public and Pine River School
Districts are participating in an innovative program that focuses
on total health of body to prepare the mind for learning. Up to
24 academic-at-risk students are invited to participate per building,
regardless of socio-economic background. Sessions span six weeks
each, and schools host between three to five sessions per school year. The
program has a special element of fun combined with learning that helps
students achieve their academic potential.
The respective school districts dedicate their facility and teaching expertise in math and
reading, and also provide a healthy snack. Cadillac Area Public Schools are supported in part
via the Cadillac Area Community Foundation and United Way in the amount of $13,500.
Programming is led by YMCA Staff members, and is supported by generous contributions
within each district:
Pine River Schools Osceola Community Foundation / Local Donors: $11,200
Cadillac Area Public Schools MDCH Grant / Walmart / YUSA / Y State Alliance: $50,000
Previously, the need within the districts exceeded the available
funding. Over 100 students needed help with only 25 funded
for traditional tutoring. Working together to support our youth,
up to 120 students per session now receive the specialized
assistance they require to be successful. This year we
encountered our next challenge students that are not
academic-at-risk are asking to join the program because
of their classmates success and excitement!

Personal
Impact
My name is Leah Mills
and I am honored to
share with you how the
YMCA has impacted
and changed my life.
We moved to Cadillac
in November of 2013
and in January, my
husband signed
our family up for a
membership. I am so
glad he did. The gym
offers group exercise
classes where I found
my niche. I formed
some amazing
friendships and found
some great running
partners. The Y is truly
an amazing place full
of amazing people!
(I have since found
out that these classes
are just the tip of the
iceberg. The Y offers so
many different things not just for me
but for my family.)
With these newly formed
friendships and exercising regularly
for the first time outside of high
school, I was motivated to change
my eating habits. I started with tiny
changes, like no pop or fast food. Now
I count calories every day and know
the nutrient breakdown of every meal.
I have learned so much about food
and what I am eating because of the
YMCA.
In the eleven months I have
been a member at the Y, I have
lost 81 pounds and even better, my
cholesterol is now in the healthy range!
And the best yetIm just getting
started!
This is the first time in my life (I am
almost 30) that I can truthfully say I
am proud of the example I have set
for my children by eating healthy foods
and exercising regularly. I have all of
you to thank for that!
I am sharing this because I want you
to know you are supporting people
and families with your sponsorship of
the Y. You are supporting members on
their journeys to become healthier
for themselves and for their families.
You are changing lives! You have
changed my life! I cannot even begin
to express my gratitude!

OUR 2014 STATEMENT

OF FINANCIAL POSITION
2014
Beginning
of Year
(Audited)

Lou and Judy Vargo have been members of the Senior Fit class since
January of 2011. They like to set goals because they feel that goals make
them work harder. During the Senior Fit Class free time they decided
to set a goal of walking 1500 laps in 2014. On average they walked
20 or more laps twice a week during their hour of free time. On the
Tuesday before Thanksgiving they accomplished their goal of 1500 laps,
which is equal to 125 miles in 11 months! After surpassing their goal
in 2014 the Vargos have motivated others at the Y and are already
developing a goal for 2015, and want to keep going with their walking!

Cadillac Currents
The Cadillac Currents are starting their fifth season as a competitive swim
team. Being part of the Cadillac Currents offers students from K-12 the rare
opportunity to compete in a lifelong sport that offers the best aspects of individual
and team sports combined. Members learn how to set goals and compete
against their personal best times, while encouraging teammates to excel
at their individual goals. Practice begins in October to prepare swimmers for
competitions that run from November through mid-March. Fun is had throughout
the season during statewide meets with other YMCA and Michigan Team Swim
League (MTSL) swimmers, including individual and relay events.
This low impact, highly physical sport provides an excellent foundation for
life lessons personal discipline, time management, and leadership are
just a few of the many benefits in addition to the healthy body and confidence
that participants gain. Many alumni of the program have demonstrated this by

Personal Best

Call to Action
2014 marked the start of a new
campaign for an Aquatic Timing
System. The system chosen includes
an electronic display system able to
communicate upcoming events,
display training material and serve
as a timing system for the swim team
and other competitive events, like the
annual triathlon held at the Cadillac Area
YMCA. Overall, the system will support
YMCA swim team members, masters
swimmers, swim lesson participants
and other community members
with their individual goals on the way
to achieving their personal best. This
tool will also open the doors to larger
meets, invitationals, and events that can
showcase our community to a larger
number of swimmers from across the
state. These additional swimmers will
provide a higher level of competition,
which in turn will motivate our swimmers
to a higher level of performance.

When I am on that platform

I cannot wait for that buzzer
to sound so I can dive into the
water and just swim. I love
that I could turn my love for
swimming into a sport where
you compete. My goal for the
2014 season was to make it
to both States again - which
was a huge challenge since
I moved up an age group.
The swim team gives me
a goal, something to work
towards. You are part of
a group but you compete
against yourself.

Cadillac Area YMCA

Preschool & Daycare

2014 was the Inaugural Season of Youth

Flag Football at the Cadillac Area YMCA, and
participants and parents alike had plenty of
positive things to say!

Recently I was asked how the Preschool and

Daycare center at the Cadillac Area YMCA has
impacted my life. The first thought that came
to mind was, How do I narrow the list down? My
second thought was my children.

2014 Parent Survey Quotes

My family moved here from California in March

of 2013. My youngest child, Lilly, had just turned
3 at the time and she was having the hardest time
with the changes in our life. I decided preschool
was what she needed and the Cadillac Area YMCA
had an opening, an amazing staff and was very
affordable. Being a one-income (military)
family, I was very relieved to be able to make
the tuition. After a few months, Lilly started getting
back to her usual happy, smart self.
Shortly after we started the Y Preschool program,
we were offered a Head Start slot. Not only could I
change the hours Lilly attended preschool, I was also
told her tuition would be free. To have that money to
help with extra cost of my family is AMAZING!
Now with 3 kids in school, I found myself asking
what now? To me the decision was simple...go back
to school and finish my GED. The adult education
classes here were in the late afternoon so with a few
simple changes to our schedule and lives, I was
able to attend, complete my education and
finally walk across the stage as a graduate. I
just felt with my children getting older, it was just
something I had to do for myself.
If everyone at the Cadillac Area YMCA Early
Childhood Department hadnt been as amazing as
they are, none of this would have happened. Even
now with that behind me, the Cadillac Area YMCA is
still impacting my life. For the first time ever I am
able to get one-on-one time daily with each of my
3 children. There is nothing more important to me
than them and the Cadillac Area YMCA has played a
huge part in my family not only settling, but thriving
here.

I thought this was the best youth

program that my son has participated
in. The kids learned, had fun, and the
competitive element was just right for
the age group. I think kids and coaches
learned a lot. Chad and Mike did a great
job with this program and it will only get
better. I had a ball watching all the teams
play.
I thought the league was well
organized and ran very smooth. WELL

CAPS to
CAMP Program

In 2014, approximately 50 children

attending Cadillac Area Public
Schools (CAPS) were nominated
by principals and staff to attend
Camp Torenta. These children were
enrolled at one of the four CAPS
Elementary schools or Mackinaw Trail
Middle School. The second requirement
was that these students had never
attended Residence Camp before.
The third condition was that they had to qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Shortly after the Cadillac Area YMCA Residence Camp, Day Camp, and
Canoe Camp brochures were sent out in the spring, students that were
nominated and ultimately selected, were notified that they were invited
to attend camp free of charge. Program Director Mike Kelso stated,
The 2014 nominees and their parents were shocked and excited to find
out they had been chosen for this new program it was like delivering a
really good Christmas present that the kids would get to open in July!
These students were gifted the experience of Residence Camp in part
due to generous donations from Rotary Club of Cadillac, the Torenta
Scholarship Fund, and private donations.
