COMMENT: The fluid quantity rate

should be shown as the rate x factor
(e.g.rate X 1.2 for relatively clean
service to account for fouling, as per
para.5.1.2in EPG 13-B-16).

37

COMMENT: The design shall maximize

liquid velocity between plates within the
pressure drop restrictions, to reduce the
fouling rate and produce high heat transfer
coefficients. If the cooling medium is sea
water, the velocity of sea water flowing
between plates shall not be less than 0.3
m/s (1/0 fps). Maximum velocity through
nozzles shall be limited to 3 m/s (10 fps) for
carbon steel nozzles and 5 m/s (16 fps) for
stainless steel or titanium nozzles.

30

COMMENT: The maximum allowable

pressure drop would normally be 100 kPa
(15 psi). However, this may be specified
higher if excessive pressure is available; or
specified lower if hydraulics dictate.
Velocity considerations will also apply and
will affect this value.

31

COMMENT: The additional surface area to

account for the fouling characteristics of
the fluids (see para.5.1.2, EPG 13-B-16).

32

COMMENT: The heat exchanged should be calculated based on the rate x factor to account for
the fouling characteristics of the fluids.
34 COMMENT: The Service Transfer Rate provided by the vendor should be based
on the service duty (e.g.flow X 1.2 factor). The actual fouled condition transfer
rate in service will be the Service Transfer Rate divided by the rate multiplication
factor (e.g. U Fouled = UService/1.2).
The clean transfer rate is the overall heat transfer coefficient calculated from the
cold side and hot side transfer coefficients (as determined for the base flowrates)
and the plate thermal conductivity, with no allowance for fouling resistance.
