Towards the end of Parshat

Yitro, the Torah tells us
(20:22):
.
And if you make for Me an
altar of stones, you shall not
build them of hewn stones
At first glance, the
translation of the beginning of
the pasuk is if you build an
alter, but Rashi, quoting the
Midrash, tells us that the
meaning is not if but when
you build a mizbeiach.
This is a really unique usage
of the word , one of only
three times it is translated as
when in Tanach; the other
two times being in reference to
the mitzvot of tzedaka and
bikurim.
Rav Moshe Feinstein is
unsettled by this explanation,
because if means when, it
is an unnecessary introduction
to the details of the mizbeiach;
simply describing what we
should do would suce. Rav
Moshe explains that there are

certain mitzvot that we

perform not only because
Hashem commanded us to, but
also because we genuinely want
to do them.
The word is teaching
that we will undoubtedly want
to build a mizbeiach and this is
simply an advanced notice.
Korbanot which are
sacrificed on the mizbeiach not
only serve as a sacrifice to
Hashem, but also expresses our
connection to Him. Tzedaka is
the act of helping people in
need, and the mitzvah of
bikurim represents Hakarat
HaTov, appreciation for
Hashem and therefore, other
people who help us. These
actions are all things we
should strive to do because we
want to do them.
The mizbeiach is a strong,
constant, and everlasting
stone. Our impulse to do good
should likewise be a strong,
consistent, and fundamental
part of who we are.

take upon myself the fire that fueled the

Israel Update

This week in Jewish

History: Shevat 18
In 1980, following its peace treaty
with Israel, the Egyptian parliament
voted to end its economic boycott
of Israel. The Arab boycott was
formally declared in 1945, stating
that Arab countries would not do
business with Israel, nor with any
company which sold products to
Israel. The objective of the boycott
was to isolate Israel from the
international community and deny
it the ability to build military and
economic strength.

Bnei Akiva word of

the week!

On Thursday, February 5, an Israeli

company dedicated East Africas largest
solar panel field. The solar panel field is on
property that is owned by the AgahozoShalom Youth Village, which is a Kibbutzstyle orphanage for victims of the Rwandan
Genocide in 1994. The solar panel field
contains 28,360 panels and will bring power
to 15,000 homes. It was built in 12 months,
and it will increase the entire country of
Africas electricity production by 6 percent.
