TILLOTSON CARBUREORS
Tillotson is one of the oldest carburetor manufacturers in the world. Operations date back to 1914. Tillotson
invented the diaphragm carburetor, which replaced the float bowl with a rubber diaphragm, thus allowing
engines to operate in virtually any position.
This innoviation led the way to an explosion in hand held lawn and garden equipment, including chain saws,
brush cutters and blowers. In the late fifties the karters started experimenting and found that Tillotson carbureors were superior to the float carburators of the day. In the 70s EC Burt took his years of machining and
racing, including motorcycle racing where he is most famous, and looked for a new war to fight. He chose
karting. He soon realized the need for a carburator for small engines. He liked the basic advantages of the
Tillotson diaphragm designed carburetor. That foundation led to him working directly as advisor to Tillotson
LTD in Ireland to create what we have today as a true racing carburetor that is accepted worldwide.

Carburetor P-Kits
Racing machines need to be maintained and serviced regularly. One part that seems to be neglected is the carburetor,
this may be, because a good carburetor continues to work s even though it is getting slower ever so slightly. It eventually
comes to a point where you have to adjust it radically different than when the carburetor was new.
All parts work together in the carburetor, but some part need servicing more often than others. Below Is a List on
recommended changes
Pump diaphragm , inlet valve diaphragm and there gaskets every three races
Note: one two plate pump stack carburetors if rules allow it is highly recommended to use a .040 thick pump gasket

Inlet needle every 5 races if using E-85 or higher ethanol, methanol , Nitro or special mix racing gasoline
Note: endless you there a issue do not replace the inlet seat as a regular service. Its not a part that wears , the threads in

HW Tillotson Series
In 2007, the introduction of the HW Series Tillotson Avenger, a new line of carburetors designed specifically
for the racing industry. These carburetors maximize the performance of todays racing engines, with greater
fuel flow, more power and more fine adjustment. Built for the CIK KF engines and tuned in some class, has
been the dominant force in Europe. Tillotson has built the HM series carburetor for racer in the USA running
the Unlimited All Stars class and Jr Drag Racing.

Carbureto Pop-off Pressure Tester Instructions:

To check the pop-off pressure of your carburetor inlet needle, remove the fuel line from the carburetor and plug the
tester gauge line onto the cap (Picture #1). Pump the tester up now and watch for the tester needle to drop. When it
does, this is the inlet needles pop-off pressure. A good needle and seat will pop-off at the desired setting, drop
to 1 pound and hold. A very slow leakage from this hold pressure wont affect the performance of your carburetor but
a complete drop from the desired setting to ZERO on the gauge will cause very poor carburetor performance and
must be cured.
Never check your pop-off pressure with the carburetor dry. We advise that you fill the line of your pressure tester
with WD 40 then when you pump this in, to test the pop-off pressure, the needle will be wet and closer to the condition
it will be when running. If the Carburetor is all together or on the engine remove High Side Needle. If you determine to
modify or change the pop-off pressure of the carburetor, remove all covers, diaphragms and gaskets from the main
carburetor body. Now put about (3) feet of fuel line on your pop-off tester and fill the line with WD 40 then put the fuel
well adapter into the end of the line.
After making the desired adjustments to the inlet tension spring for a change in pop-off pressure, you can now check it
by inserting the adapter into the fuel well passage (Picture #2). By inserting the adapter into the fuel well passage (o-ring
end of adapter down) and pushing with pressure on the o-ring, you will seal off the pressure to the needle and seat for
accurate readings. NOTE: It is not advisable to stretch the inlet tension spring or cut off the spring where you have an
end that stands up. This will cause inconsistent pop-off pressure in the carburetor when racing.
Cutting inlet lever spring (pop-off ) spring properly

Start by using a EC spring, most of our springs have double coil on one end of the spring(Pic B) so you can cut one coil off
if necessary to lower lower installed height thus lowering your pop off pressure on a given spring. Next, make sure you buy
a high quality nail clippers that have heat treated blades (from a beauty supply house for professionals) not the junk at the
five and dime store. A good pair of nail clipper will make a clean cut with out bending the wire and leaving a burr(Pic C).
Never: Stretch a spring, it will in time will find it way back and cause a erratic behavior in your carburetor.
Never: Cut a spring to leave a dog leg (Pic D) This will cause pop off pressure to be erratic

Adjusting the Metering Lever Height

spring in this condition!
With the metering diaphragm and metering diaphragm cover removed:

1. Remove the 6 bolts holding the pump assemble on the carburetors.
2. Make sure the metering diaphragm and gasket is remove, and any torn gasket is completely clean from carburetor body.
3. Make sure the metering lever spring is seated in its hole in the chamber floor and under the dimple in the metering lever.
4. Place the EC fulcrum arm height tool across carburetor body casting, as illustrated. Metering lever should just touch the
gauge. Slight pressure will bend the fulcrum arm . Lightly bend the needle valve of the fulcrum arm end up.
5. Gasket must be assembled next to the body as shown
6. HL and HR Tillotson are set from the factory at.085 deep, most gasoline 4cycle engines set at .075 and most methanol
engines set at .065 This is one of the most important settings, take your time.
