Mercury at 250C is flowing through a tube of 2cm diameter with Re = 10 4. Calculate the
heat transfer coefficient. The relation used is

Air at 100kPa and 300K is flowing over a flat plate at a velocity of 1m/s. If the plate is
1m long and at 500K, Calculate the

For air at 100 kPa and 300K, = 1.092 Kg/m3, = 17.6 x 10-6 m2/sec, Cp = 1.014 kJ/kg-K,
k = 0.0265W/m-K and Pr = 0.71.
3.
Air at 20 0C flowing at 25m/sec passes over a flat plate, the surface of which is
maintained at 270 0C. Calculate the rate at which heat is transferred from both sides of the plate
per unit width over a distance of 0.25m the leading edge. Properties of air at 145 0C are:
= 2.8 x 10-5 m2/sec, k = 3.49 X 10-5 kW/m-K and Pr = 0.687.
4.
(a) The average heat transfer coefficient over the entire length of the plate.
(b) The total rate of condensation.
(c) The thickness of condensate at the bottom of the plate.
The properties of condensate at 60 0C are:
= 4.71 x 10-4 kg/m-sec, k = 0.654 W/m-K, = 983.3 kg/m3 and hfg = 2257 kJ/kg
5.
A vertical plate 5m high and 1.5m wide has one of its surfaces insulated. The other
surface is maintained at a uniform temperature of 400K is exposed to quiescent atmospheric air
at 300K. Calculate the Grashoff number and total rate of heat loss. The relation used is

Saturated steam at 1.46 bar and 110 0C condenses on a 25mm outer diameter vertical tube
which is 50cm long. The tube wall is maintained at 100 0C. Calculate the average heat transfer
coefficient and the rate of condensation.
The properties of condensate at 105 0C are:
= 954.7 Kg/m3, = 0.271 x 10-3 kg/m-sec, k = 0.68 W/m-K, hfg = 2243.7 kJ/kg.
