Ancient Egypts strange deities and elaborate rituals have intrigued man for centuries. However,
many elements of Egyptian religion, from their use of symbols as a statement of faith to their
emphasis on the power of the written and spoken word, are far less esoteric than they
appear at first glance.

uthorities in Columbus, OH, are having a hard time believing that a cat called 9-11 when its owner was in distress, but they have not been able to come up with any
other explanation.
In January of 2006, dispatchers received an emergency services call, but when there
was no one on the phone, they called back the number to make
sure that everything was okay. When no one answered, they
sent police to the address and when the officers entered the
apar tment, they found Gar y Rosheisen on the floor in his
bedroom and his orange-and-tan striped cat Tommy laying
by the telephone in the living room.
Rosheisen, who suffers from osteoporosis and
ministrokes that disrupt his balance, had fallen
from his wheelchair. He was not wearing his medical-alert necklace when he fell and was unable
to get to the telephone, or the cord above his
bed that alerts paramedics that he needs help.
Rosheisen said that he had tried to teach the
cat to dial 911 using a speed-dial button, but
had never known whether Tommy had understood
the lesson.

n Januar y of 2006, the chief of the Yangzhuang police depar tment in Chinas Henan
Province called in experts to figure out why they could not take an ID photo of Ye Xiangting, a young man from a nearby village.
According to officers, when they attempted to photograph Xiangting, no image of him
showed up in the digital photographs. So they carefully checked their equipment and then
checked the mans clothes to be sure that he did not carry anything that would interfere
with the equipment. They then tried repeatedly to photograph Xiangting from every angle,
but still failed to get any images of him. So they took several photographs of the man with
other people and were stunned when the other people showed up in the computer images,
but not Xiangting.
There is still no explanation of why they could not take photographs of Ye Xiangting, who
said that he has been photographed on many occasions and has never encountered this
sort of problem before.

Experts say that the fall of Cancun
foreshadowed the decline of other cities
along the river. After the ruin of the city,
the trade route along the river died out,
and some believe that the gruesome discover y at Cancun records a critical
moment at the beginning of the mysterious collapse of the Maya civilization.
Exper ts have long thought that a
major factor in its decline was unrelenting drought that resulted in economic
and ecological collapse, disease, and war
between the neighboring city-states.
Some suggest that the rulers of Cancun
may have been executed during an uprising of the people, who had long suffered
because of the drought, or that the royal
family was ritually sacrificed in ceremonies related to the drought.
Because the slain were interred
respectfully and not stripped of their
robes, adornments, and jewelry, project
co-director Arthur Demarest of Vanderbilt University agrees that the nobles
were probably killed by other Mayas.
However, Demarest believes that other
archaeological evidence, including spearheads, skeletons with markings of spear
and ax wounds, and unfinished stone and
wooden palisade walls around the palace,
suggests a desperate attempt to defend a
besieged city.
He speculates that Cancun was conquered by rivals from other Mayan citystates, who assassinated its rulers to
establish their dominion but then had to
abandon the city because of long-term
drought and warfare.

of particles per cubic centimeter as normal matter and it has a density equivalent
to four atoms of hydrogen per cubic centimeter of space. This means that dark
matter cannot be packed into a space
smaller than 300 parsecs (a cube that
measures 1,000 light-years along each
side) and that the par ticles move at
about six miles per second.
These findings came as a big surprisecurrent theory had predicted that
dark matter would be much denser and
extremely cold, so would move at only a
few millimeters per second. The observations, however, prove that the particles
are actually quite warm in cosmic terms.
(If they were made of atoms of hydrogen, its temperature would be about
18,000F, hotter than the surface of the
sun.) Gilmore notes, however, that dark
matter does not give off radiation and
has no charge.
Scientists believe that the most likely
candidate for dark matter material is
relic elementary particles produced in
the Big Bang. Known as weakly interacting massive particles, or WIMPs,
they contribute gravity through their
mass, but other wise interact weakly
with normal matter.
Experts say that the recent research
represents a quantum leap in understanding the mysterious matter. But it
will be far more difficult to find a particle
with lighter mass than it would have
been to find a heavier particle. The study
has also enabled scientists to more precisely weigh the Milky Way, which they
have found is more massive than the
Andromeda galaxy, which was previously
thought to be the biggest galaxy in the
local universe.

in July, 2001. If particle clouds are created in the atmosphere by the fragmentation and disintegration of a special
kind of meteor that presumably contains
a dense collection of red particles, then
clouds of such particles can mix with the
rain clouds to cause red rain, Louis
explained.
However, the explanation did not satisfy everyone. Indias Centre for Earth
Science Studies said instead that the particles may have been spores from a fungus. But how such a large quantity of
spores could appear over a small region
is as yet unknown. Astrobiologist Chandra Wickramasinghe thinks that a more
careful examination of the red rain material is needed, but feels that at first
glance, there is solid evidence that the
red rain had an extraterrestrial origin.

xperts from Austrias national veterinary authority have determined that 40 songbirds found dead in Vienna in January of 2006 did not die of avian flu, as was initially feared, but instead broke
their necks slamming into windows because they were drunk.
The birds proved to have
advanced liver disease caused
by gorging themselves on berries
that had begun to rot. As the
berries rotted, the juice inside
turned to alcohol and probably
continued to fer ment as the
birds digested the berries, causing them to become disoriented

between the Chefren Pyramid and the

water, we have found a burial chamber with

of Osiris, the god.
ZAHI HAWASS, JANUARY 31, 1999

n 1999, a team of Belgium and German archaeologists, while excavating
an Egyptian burial chamber on the
Giza plateau, halfway between the
Chefren Pyramid and the Sphinx, discovered a tunnel that led below the chamber
to a small causeway, at the end of which
was a solid granite capstone sealing off an
apparent tomb. Zahi Hawass, director of
the Giza site for the Egyptian Antiquities
Authority, was alerted to the discovery
and immediately stepped in to supervise
the dig.
At the end of a causeway that connects
the tomb to Kharfres Pyramid, they discovered a circular door made of chocolate
basalt, at the base of which read in hieroglyphs that this was the tomb of the god
Osiris. Upon reading this, two teams of
superstitious Egyptian workers immediately stopped working and left the site.
(In Egypt, it is common practice to not
disturb the artifacts of the ancients. One
can only imagine their panic when they
discovered they were about to open the
sealed tomb of a legendary god of their
ancestors.)
According to sources, the tombs door
had a golden seal placed around the rim
of the capstone. This gold, when tested,
was dated to between 3844 BC to 4400
BC, well before the supposed establishment date for the Egyptian Upper and
Lower Kingdoms and the invention of
hieroglyphics in 3300 BC. But when
journalists from the BBC and London
Times asked about these odd results, no
one in authority would address it.
Hawass eventually hired men from the
Egyptian army to open the tombs capstone and proceed with the excavation.

struck the North Carolina

the storms waves scoured sand from the
wreckage that is believed to be that of
the pirate Blackbeards flagship Queen

unearthed near the stern of the vessel,
where the officers quarters would have

numerous small concretions, and an

fear that lighter-weight artifacts, such as

Scientists working on concretions previously excavated from the wreckage
announced in January of 2006 that xrays have identified the presence of a
coat button, some glass beads that were
used as a trade commodity with both
slaves in West Africa and American Indians, and a part of a set of iron shackles.
Researchers hope that the shackles will
help identify the wreck as the slave ship

items plundered during a series of key

The proposed salvage operation has

According to the book, the newly

The slightest misstep or mispronunciation would mean an eternity of torment, or even worseutter annihilation of the soul.
Once these dangers were met with

o the Egyptians, objects imbued
with magical powers were an
important part of everyday life.
In fact, the first sight that an infant saw
upon entering this world was its
birthing brick, a mud brick that the
expectant mother squatted on during
delivery, which was painted with hieroglyphs and depictions of the goddesses
Isis and Hathor, in an effort to invoke
their blessing on both mother and child.
Amulets to ward off evil spirits were
worn by children of all ages, and the typical Egyptian house was filled with statuettes of protective deities, especially
Bes, a lion-maned dwarf who was the
protector of both children and the
household.
Additionally, many Egyptians were
named after one or more of the gods to
ensure their protection and favor. For
the Egyptians believed that names, like
words, had their own power and could
be used magically.
For instance, it was believed that to
know a persons true name was to give
ones power over to them. To prevent
this, the Egyptians gave their children
multiple names, one to be used every day
and another to be used only under certain special circumstances, such as during
religious ceremonies, when its power
was necessary to protect the individual
or to bring about some positive result.
While the protective deities so beloved
by the Egyptians were ubiquitous, exactly which deity was worshiped depended
on where one was born. For instance,
the inhabitants of Thebes honored

came upon EVP by chance while recording Gregorian chants. After experiencing
problems with a broken wire on their
magnetophone (a device that recorded
sound on a spool of magnetized wire),
Gemelli asked his deceased father for

fathers voice, recorded on the magnetophone, answered: Of course I shall help

They repeated the experiment and
this time, a clear voice said: But Zucchini, it is clear; dont you know it is I?
Gemelli was convinced that the voice
was that of his father because no one else
knew that Zucchini was his childhood

Years later, the two men visited Pope
Pius XII in Rome, where Gemelli told
the Pope of the experience. To his surprise, the Pope told him not to worry
about the Catholic ban on contacting
the dead because what they experienced
had nothing to do with spiritism.
Rather, the Pope believed that the
experiment might lead to scientific studies that would strengthen peoples faith
in the hereafter.

EVP was first brought to the publics attention in 1959 when Friederich Jrgenson, a

Claypools CoffeeMaker
n 2001, Charli Claypool of Kent Island, MD, discovered that while in the process of brewing coffee, her Krups cof feemaker would produce a
cacophony of words, moaning noises, and voices
calling out her name, as well as distressingly loud
pleas of Help me! This prompted her to purchase a
digital recorder that succeeded in picking up a number of discernible voices, some speaking in different
dialects.
They were talking to me and to each other, Claypool said. They constantly referred to me by name,
nomenon that he continued his experiments with EVP until his death in
1974.
Following the directions given to
him by his voices, Raudive connected a
microphone and a radio receiver to the
tape recorder. At first, he set the radio

who had died in 1967, inspired Spiricom, saying that he had offered, from
the astral plane, verifiable advice on
how to improve the reception of the
Spiricom equipment.
By the fall of 1980, Spiricom had
advanced to the point where Muellers
spirit voice was loud and easily understandable. Meek and ONeil soon
recorded more than 20 hours of dialog
with Mueller.
The two researchers released their
findings in 1982, providing reporters at
the National Press Club in Washington,
DC, with recordings and a 100-page
technical report giving wiring diagrams,
photos, technical data, and guidelines for
research by others. Allegedly, the
deceased Konstantin Raudive even continued his work from beyond the grave,
phoning George Meek and EVP
researcher Mark Macy in 1994 to
announce that the spirits had succeeded
in building a new bridge to the States.
The Advent of ITC
VP and Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC)in which
tape recorders, TVs, radios, computers, telephones, and other technical
devices are used in an attempt to contact
other realities or planes of existence
have come a long way since the early
days of sances. Now, researchers point
video cameras at television screens filled
with static to record images of the
deceased. There are even programs
developed to catch spectral utterances
via computer.
The general consensus among most
EVP researchers is that discarnate spirits
are the main source for the voices. But
others believe that the voices could also
be from living inhabitants from other
planets, or from different planes of existence, worlds existing side by side with
ours, only vibrating at faster or slower
rates. Experienced EVP researchers caution beginners not to believe everything
that comes through, stating that there
are liars on the other side, just as there
are in the material world.
So has technology made a difference in
spiritual research and contact? Are

Furthermore, Kenn Attwood, chief
engineer of Pye Records Ltd., stated, I
have done everything in my power to
break the mystery of the voices without
success. I suppose we must learn to
accept them.
Eventually, Raudive amassed over
100,000 recordings of strange voices.
He never wavered in his belief that
these recordings were proof of an afterlife, though at first, he wondered if the
voices were those of friends from
outer space.
To others, the recordings were an
exercise in frustration. Many of the voices spoke only a few words in length and

In 1797, Jesuit priest Augustin Barruel, who was living in exile in England,
wrote several volumes on the French
Revolution. A translated abridgement
of these texts appeared in 1798 as Memoirs of the Histor y of Jacobinism and
Freemasonry of Barruel, translated into
English by the Hon. Robert Clifford.
According to the book, the French
Revolution was caused by a vast secret
conspiracy operating through the
Freemasons who had sworn hatred to
the altar and the throne, had sworn to
crush the God of the Christians, and
utterly to extirpate the Kings of the
Earth. After overthrowing Frances
monarchy, they had ordered all the
adepts to cry up the revolution and
its principles, until every nation would
have its apostle of Equality, Liberty,
and Sovereignty of the People.
However, Barruel neglected to mention that many 18th-centur y French
noblemen, including King Louis XVI
and his brothers, were Freemasons. He
also ignored the inconvenient fact that
the Grand Orient, Frances leading
Masonic organization, was banned during the French Revolution.
Despite these inconsistencies, Barruels work became popular and was translated into many different languages, laying the groundwork throughout Europe
for conspiracy theories and paranoia
about shadowy secret societies which
toppled empires and fomented revolutions. Soon, these anti-Masonic feelings gave rise to a new twist in
an old sickness: antiSemitism.
The Simonini letter was a forgery fabricated by order of Joseph Fouch, chief of
the French secret police. Fouch resented
Bonapartes liberal policy toward the
Jews, and sought to influence him against
them. But his efforts failed. In 1807,
along with Catholicism and Protestantism, Napoleon recognized Judaism
as one of Frances official religions. Still,
Barruel circulated the Simonini letter,
giving credence to the myth of an international Jewish conspiracy.
But perhaps the strangest French connection to the Protocols comes from a
French lawyer of liberal bent. His satire
mocking Emperor Napoleon III was
later plagiarized wholesale by a German
anti-Semite whose work was later plagiarized by the author of the Protocols of the
Elders of Zion.
Plagarized Dialogs
n 1864, an anonymous pamphlet
entitled Dialogues in Hell Between
Machiavelli and Montesquieu
appeared in France. This pamphlet presented an imaginary dialog between the
18th-centur y philosophical historian
Montesquieu (representing liberalism)
and the 16th-century statesman Niccolai
Machiavelli (representing tyranny and
despotism). Written during the reign of
Napoleon III, the author Maurice Joly
equated the emperor with Machiavelli.
For this, Joly was sentenced to two years
imprisonment for sedition.
Although Jolys Dialogues made no
mention of the Jews, that oversight
was later corrected by German
Hermann Goedsche. Writing
under the pen name Sir John
Retclif fe, in 1868, he

BY CHARLES UPTON
ISBN: 59731-024-7
$18.95, SOPHIA PERENNIS, 2005
harles Upton presents an interesting contribution to UFO literature in this novel, as so-called alien visitors, in his perspective, are at once physical and metaphysical phenomena,
invoked by our collective will, perhaps provoked by the dark machinations of government conspiracies and sorcerers.
But all of this is nothing new. The feats of aliens in our collective
imagination are, as he points out, similar to both those of the heroes of
science fiction and of the saints of traditional Christianity. However, the
widespread appearance of UFOs and alien abduction, according to
Upton, is not due to things being the same as they ever were, but rather
to cracks in the great wall between levels of being, a sign of cataclysmic cosmic changethe Second Coming, if you will. We are, in other words, living in the End Times.
While ultimately steeped in pseudo-Christian eschatology and not really successful as a metaphysical tome (being rather quasi-New Age Kabbalah), Cracks in the Great Wall will entertain those
interested in UFOlogy as a modern iteration of the human need for the supernatural, as well as armchair philosophers looking for a holistic explanation of the weirdness of the modern age.

Mystery of Reincarnation
The Evidence & Analysis of Rebirth
BY J. ALLAN DANELEK
ISBN: 0-7387-0704-X
$16.95, LLEWELLYN, 2005
anelek, who comes from an evangelical Christian background, describes his book as a reincarnation primer. In it, he provides a brief history of the concept, and then describes how reincarnation works and what it means. Four appendices deal with related subjects, including a
section on reincarnation in the Bible, with an emphasis on Jesus that demonstrates Danaleks evangelical roots, if only through his omission of any Old Testament references.
Except for a quick nod to Hinduism and Buddhism on page 14, Danalek does not discuss the mystical Eastern religions in which reincarnation is a central beliefa glaring omission, as the idea of
moral cause-and-effect is so thoroughly developed in these religions through the notion of karma. Instead, Danalek focuses on
stories from the popular press, such as the 1950s tabloid story,
in which the 19th-century Irish woman Virginia Tighe revealed during hypnosis that in a past life she had been a woman named Bridie Murphy.
Indeed, as a born-again reincarnationist, Danalek seems to
feel oppressed by the Western religious establishment. He discusses the suppression of reincarnationist teachings and
devotes three entire chapters to refuting objections and challenges to the belief. Moreover, his discussions of homosexuality, abortion, suicide, and euthanasia in terms of reincarnation
are speculatively bizarre. Abortion, for instance, subverts the
reincarnation processon what proof it is not clear, but it is
not surprising that he takes a fundamentalist Christian position. Essentially, though, these more or less topical issues are
not particularly relevant. Part two is unfortunately simplistic in
its analysis of the reason for reincarnation (ie. the path of love to reunification with the Divine).
Vague, misleading statements such as, it is a myth that the spiritual realm and the physical realm
are separate abound. (A myth?) And one chapter on karma comically describes how a Nazi may be
born again as a Jew as a punishment and learning experience. Karma as a moral law is lifted from Hinduism without reference to its cultural origin, but Danelek explains it in terms of dramatic irony,
such as in the film Freaky Friday, when the daughter switches bodies with her mom.
In sum, this rather imaginative examination of the concept of rebir th is idealistic and poorly
researched. The style is breezy and light as well, as a sensational tabloid.

attle mutilations, crop circles, UFOs, poltergeists, telepathic communications from interdimensional entities,
and Indian shapeshiftersthis combination may sound
like something from Plan 9 From Outer Space. But for the Gorman family, it is no laughing matter. Their trials are chronicled in
Hunt for the Skinwalker, a book
which explores the various explanations for the Gormans plight.
Soon after purchasing their Utah
ranch in 1994, the Gormans were
besieged by a series of unexplainable events. Farm implements and
cooking utensils disappeared;
massive, wolf-like animals
attacked their herds; and glowing
orbs were regularly spotted in the
night sky. Three of Tom Gormans
dogs disappeared, leaving only
burned grass in their wake while
four of his prize Angus cattle were
mutilated. Ultimately, things
became so bad that the Gormans
were forced to abandon their new home.
Word of these strange happenings eventually reached Colm
Kelleher, a scientist working with a private research institute in
Las Vegas. And so a team of scientists, along with investigative
journalist George Knapp, descended upon the Gorman ranch, in
an effort to determine what was happening at this remote Utah
farm. There, the research team experienced many of the same
phenomena, ultimately collecting a large amount of fascinating
but frustratingly inconclusive data.
To protect their privacy, the Gormans and the new owners of
the ranch have asked that their names be changed. Other
sources in the book also asked for similar consideration, as
many of the scientists who studied the Gorman Ranch phenomena feared for their professional reputations should they
be named and quoted. While their concern is understandable,
this anonymity makes it difficult to speak with original witnesses and to visit the original location for verification and fur ther
study. We can only hope that future residents of the "Skinwalker Ranch" and future scientists will be more willing to be quoted on the record. Perhaps then we will be closer to solving this
baffling mystery.

CON SORDINO MUSIC (2005)
BY GABRIEL MESTA
ISBN: 0-7434-4639-9
$23, POCKET BOOKS, 2005
abriel Mesta (aka Kevin J. Anderson) attempts a pseudo-pastiche of H.G. Wells War of the Worlds in Martian War, with
the main differences between Wells classic story and this
retelling of the real story behind events being anachronistic Victorian sexual liberation and a discrepancy in the authors ability to
make his words believable.
In Martian War, the story begins as Wells, his girlfriend Jane, and
his mentor T.H. Huxley, are accidentally blasted into space by a terrorist attack. From there, they visit a 19th-centur y version of the
moon, home to a hive-mind civilization called the Selenites. The
Martians, it seems, enslaved the Selenites eons ago, and it is Earth's turn next. Wells and company
therefore set off for the Red Planet in their improbable spaceship to thwart their nefarious plans.
Meanwhile, back on earth, Wells' nemesis Dr. Moreau has captured a martian advance scout and
has to deal with an octopus-like creature's fiendish machinations as it repeatedly tries to enact every
stock horror-movie situation in the book, such as drinking human blood and killing its only ally on
Earth.
The Martian War is, simply put, as predictable and hideous as the Martians themselves, chock full
of every clich and fantastic plot device that one could imagine. One wonders how drek like this sees
the light of day, and can only assume that the editors at Pocket Books were swayed by Andersons
16 million books in print, mainly in the X-Files and Star Wars franchises. Hopefully, they will not make
this mistake again.
