Lesson 7

Deriving a Formula in Finding the Area of a Circle

Elicit
Look at the circles below and try to get its area in square units.
(Illustrate these 2 circles in a square grid. 1. A circle with radius of 2 units. 2. A
circle with radius 4 units.)
What is the area of each circle? What did you do to get the area?

Pause & Answer

How well do I know this idea?
How prepared am I to move further to this lesson?

Engage
A rotunda is any building with a circular ground plan. One examples of
this is the Araneta Coliseum located at Quezon City. It occupies about 40000 square
meters of land area.
(Put a picture of Araneta Coliseum top view. The circular structure of the dome should
be seen.)
Can we also use the method that we learned to get the area of this dome? How did
the architect of this building get its floor area?

Pause & Answer

What do I want to know about the formula to get the area of a circle?
What do I want to learn this?

Explore
This time lets create a method to get the area of the circle a lot easier.
Imagine a circular pizza divided into 8 equal parts.
Lets rearrange and place the parts in this way, as shown below.
Illustrate a
pizza that is
divided into 8
equal parts.)
16

And if we divide the circle further

into smaller parts, this is how it will look
like.
What kind of figure is formed? The parts of a circle form a figure whose shape is
close to that of a parallelogram.
Do you still remember the formula to get the area of a parallelogram?
1
C
2

b
r

The formula to get the area of a parallelogram is base height. This is the same as
the area of the circle.
Area of circle = Area of rectangle
Area of circle =
Lets replace the circumference of the circle by

What now is the formula for the area of a circle?

Area of circle =

Elaborate
Do the following directions.
1. Cut out a circle with 12 cm diameter.
2. Divide the circle into four equal parts.
3. Assemble the pieces so that they form a figure that looks like a parallelogram.
4. Divide further each part into 2 equal parts. Rearrange again the pieces to form
a figure like a parallelogram.
5. Do the same procedure, until the circle is divided into 32 equal parts.

Explain
Below are the ideas you should have learned about this lesson. Can you explain
each one of them with one of your classmates? Check those you understood well and
cross out those where you need further explanation.
1. The easier method to get the area of a circle is by using a formula.
2. The circle when divided into small parts and rearranged can be made into a
parallelogram.
17

3. The formula for the area of a circle is r2.

What happens to the figure as the number of equal parts increases? How will the figure
look like, if the circle is further divided into 64? 128?

Examine the item/s in A, justify the letter of your answers.

C. Test your PROCESS/SKILLS
How do we derive the formula for the area of a circle?
D. Show your PRODUCT and/or PERFORMANCE
You are a mathematician and you need to use your
knowledge about the formula to get the area of a
circle. Make a formula to get the area of the shaded
figures below. This is worth 10 points. 5 points for
each formula of shaded figures.
