Unit 9

Measuring Circumference and

Area of a Circle
An illustration of :
-

a man and his son is biking. The wheel of their bike are highlighted. There is a
circular building whose circumference is also highlighted.

There are circular designs in a floor of school building. Highlight the circular
designs.

What are the father and son doing? How many times do you think they need to go around
the oval to cover a distance of 5 kilometers? How big is the circular design on the floor? How
will you get the area of this region?
We seldom appreciate objects with circular shapes around us. This unit will allow us to
see some properties of circles that will enable us to solve real life problem. It has 10 lessons that
will help you to gain skill in calculating the circumference and area of circular objects.
After going through this unit, you are expected to :
Content Standard: demonstrate understanding of circumference and area of circles
Performance Standard: apply knowledge of circumference and area of circles in mathematical
problems and real-life situations.
How does this unit link with the lessons you learned in the previous grade?
What lessons in the past link with this unit?
In the previous grades, you learned how to
visualize, measure, derive the formula and find the perimeter and area of some plane
figures such as triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelogram, and trapezoids.
solve and create routine and non-routine problems involving perimeter and area of
some plane figures.
The skills you learned in these previous lesson/s will be needed in understanding this unit on
