INDUSTRIAL VISIT
THE HINDU
The I MBA students of SIMS visited The Hindu printing unit at Singanallur on 5.1.2015. The
students were accompanied by two faculty members, Mr. Balakrishnan and Mrs. Nithya. They
received a warm welcome by the employees and technicians of the Hindu. All the process of printing
the newspaper in English and Tamil was explained by the technicians. First the students were divided
into two groups and taken into the unit by two different technicians. The students along with the
faulty members had a very great experience. The entire system of printing is mechanized and
consumes only low labour for printing. They use only 7 labours per shift and the remaining process is
taken care by the machines. First, they mentioned about the system based work and the process
involved in it. The designing part of the paper is taken due care by the head office at Chennai and the
work of printing the same is carried out with the help of the system and there is no manual process in
the Coimbatore unit. They use 4 major colours for printing, that is red, blue, black and yellow and the
other colours are derived from the base colours. All the decisions are made by the editor and the
information is stored in a PDF format and the same is delivered from Chennai. Once the PDF format is
available the same is printed in four set of aluminium plates. They use the same layout from the
beginning till the end of the newspaper. They print 60000 copies per hour and 140000 copies are
printed every day. Per day they use 15 rolls of paper and they have stock for 3 months and these
papers were imported from different countries like Germany, US etc. Once the papers are printed
they were bundled with the help of machines and circulated to all parts of the country.

REJUVENATION HOLIDAY
Successful and young Joint Secretary, Shri. T. R. Kalyanaraman recognizes that his
employees have a life outside job and is vital.
Employees engage with employers and brands when theyre treated as humans worthy
of respect. As the saying goes, SIMS has initiated the concept of Rejuvenation Holiday
for its faculty members. This would be a one day holiday granted to the employees,
which on a rotation basis would be offered with a sponsor of Rs. 1000 from the
organization. The faculty could take the day off to visit spas, hotels with family, theme
parks, shopping at malls, or a chill out with families. This concept has really come as a
New Year Bonanza to the faculty of SIMS, who expressed their gratitude to the
management for this generous act.
Prof. L. Gandhi, Head of the Department opined that Rejuvenation Holiday would
trigger sense of pride of belonging to this institution and increase productivity among the
faculty. The initiation of this concept was well begun at SIMS, when Prof. K. Thirugnana
Sambanthan was granted the Rejuvenation Holiday on 2.1.2015. Prof. K. Thirugnana

Students and staff displayed quotes on Women safety and empowerment every day, showing the
need and responsibility of every citizen to safeguard womens rights. Innovation was considered as an
aid to help safeguard women in this technological era and students and staff brainstormed on few
innovative ideas for women's safety. An idea generation contest was organized with the theme "innovate
to safeguard women" in lieu of observing women's safety week at SIMS. Students and faculty
participated actively and many unique technological ideologies were floated.
Prof. K. Thirugnana Sambanthan initiated the idea of a mobile application, which would be an
aid that if a student is in danger, the student can use the app to alert students in nearby colleges. Also
the app can be used to communicate between students to come together for a social cause or
demanding for justice in cases such as rapes. A team of students from I MBA came up with the idea of
an eyewear
camera that enables visualizing live similar to video calling and helping parents watch live
through Bluetooth and mobile technology in cases of dangers and risky situations. Offender will also be
hesitant to indulge in illicit activity as his image will be captured.
SIMS organizes recurring self defense sessions on women safety teaching various martial arts,
karate and other self defense mechanisms with trainers equipped for the same. Prof. L. Gandhi, Head
of the Department advised the girl students to also be precautious and use various preventive methods
both indigenous and technological like carrying of pepper spray on travelling alone, and to be aware of
telephone numbers of various agencies that would help them on remote travels or places of risk. The
week long observation was a huge learning to both male and female students on the various methods by
which women were harassed across the globe. The sessions also imbibed in the students the need to
empower women for wholesome development of a nation. Displaying of the movie MaryKom was an
eye opener that showed the students that women are equal to men on all aspects and can achieve on
par with man.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
