It is with great pleasure that we present to you the author of the game-changing
book, The Four Steps to the Epiphany, used in many classes at BYU, and our
special guest of honor, Steve Blank. We are so pleased to have you with us
today.
[If Alex Osterwalder is on Skype] Also, we have another special guest today on
Skype, Alex Osterwalder, the author of Business Model Generation, a superb
guide to developing a business model.

Nathan Furr

Our last judge today is BYUs own Dr. Nathan Furr, a professor in
Entrepreneurship who teaches business models in his courses and brought the
teachings on developing a business model and the author of a new book entitled
Nail It Then Scale It. Dr. Furr devised this competition and then went to the BYU
Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology, where he found ample support. In fact,
he is going to share a bit about this competition, how it got started, its purpose,
and where its headed. Dr. Furr
[Nathan shares his vision, the purpose, the history, and scope of the competition]
[Nathans words]

Keith McCord

Thank you. Keith, back to you

Thanks, Nathan.
Now, lets get this show on the road!
Heres what has happened to far.
The BMC, in this its inaugural year, received 45 completed submissions from
teams from around the world. About 10 days ago, a large panel of judges
reviewed these submissions (comprised of a PowerPoint with audio overlay telling
their business model story) and selected 8 semi-finalists. This was an arduous

process requiring much time and consideration. The man hours have been
significant. Those not making the Top 8 were notified immediately after the
decisions were made. The semi-finalists were notified as well.
Last Friday, three days ago, these 8 semi-finalists, some coming from across the
pond (thats the Atlantic) vied with live presentations in a closed session with a
panel of judges. These judges whittled the number down to four finalists.
We will now hear these live presentations from these four finalists. They have
been selected to present in random order. They will be timed presentations
followed by a Q&A opportunity for the judges.
One last reminder to everyone this is not a business plan competition we are
rewarding entrepreneurial teams that have come up with a hypothesis for a
business model, then tested that hypothesis via target customer interaction,
pivoted (changed) that business model, until they arrived at a model that would
work, or they discovered there was no viable model. How they have done it is as
important as what they have done.
Well have a brief setup break between each presentation.
Once all four presentations have been made, the judges will caucus in private
while we hear from some speakers. The judges will then return back and
announce the winner.
Before I forget, these finalists are competing for the honor and the money.
4th place gets $3,000
3rd place gets $5,000
2nd place gets $10,000
1st place gets $15,000

The floor is yours.
