Art and Design Context: Personal Investigation


The Brief :

You will undertake a personal investigation of the art and design discipline which you wish to
specialise in for the 2nd Year of your HND. You will identify a specific topic in this discipline to
research and analyse.
Outcome 1 - Undertake an investigation of an art and design discipline
It is essential for progression to employment or Higher Education that you are able to put
your chosen specialism into context with life from historical and contemporary events and
technological progress.
You will begin by investigating the development of your chosen discipline from 1900 to the
present and also any predictions for the future. The subjects which are included in your HND
are:
Painting
Printmaking
Sculpture
Illustration
Visual Communication
Jewellery or any other 3D Design Discipline
You could also show how these disciplines have developed over time in relation to social,
political, cultural, technological and environmental events.
You should begin by choosing your discipline and creating a time line from 1900 to the
present showing how your discipline has been effected by changes in life and world events
for example technology develops constantly and will have a major effect on how artists and
designers produce their work in relation to materials and processes.
You must present visual and annotated information
You can present your visual findings by producing either:
A visual Diary
A1 Presentation Boards
A Power Point Presentation
This must be the equivalent of at least 12 x A4 pages
These must include:
Visuals which explain the information which you have discovered in date order,
Visuals should show:
The Art/Design Work
Events effecting the Progress of your discipline
Technological processes effecting your discipline
Influential Artists who were pioneers of the discipline
Annotated information can either be included alongside the visuals or in a report from
which references the visuals and should include:
Dates
Explanations of why events in your time line were influential to the development of
your discipline

Explanations of why technological progress has influenced the development of your


discipline.
Explanations of why artists/ designers you have chosen were and are pioneering to
their discipline.

Keep a note of where you sourced all visual information and quotes in order to reference
these to avoid plagiarism.
Your Time Line Must be complete by week 7 for formative assessment and must
include all the requirements detailed above and your must reference your sources
visuals and any quotes you are using.
Outcome 2 Synthesis (the combination of ideas to form a theory) and present a
personal investigation min. 2,000 word-processed essay.
Having investigated the development of your specialism you will select a specific topic to
present your own analysis of a focused area. You should select a topic which you feel is
relevant to your own work and interest in the art and design discipline.
You can choose one of the following approaches:
Two Artists/Designers to compare and contrast their approaches one historical and
one contemporary.
Two Art/Design movements to compare and contrast, one historical and one
contemporary
An event or events (these must have relevant links) in your time line which had major
influences on Art/Design this could have been something ground breaking,
controversial or detrimental.
A technological process or processes which had major influences to art and design in
positive or negative contexts.
You must produce Visual and Annotated information and can use any of the
approaches from Outcome 1 and must ensure that you reference visual sources and
any quotes used.
In your presentation you must include:
A title and explanation of the approach you are taking
Your personal Interest in this approach and how it influences you and your own
approaches
Personal interpretation of the material you have gathered
Your own opinions of the facts which you have discovered
A conclusion to the approach which reflects what you have learned and how this may
have changed from the expectations at the outset to the personal investigation.
A minimum of 2000 words (word processed) + visuals
An oral presentation which should be approximately 10 minutes.
