RE: Clinical Examinations for the BSN Year 3 Students (February 24 March 7, 2014)

Firstly, let me thank you all for your support and facilitation of the students thus far in the
clinical rotation. I have gone ahead and arranged the clinical examination rota for Mental Health
Nursing. These examinations will take place as per schedule.
I am therefore requesting your support. All Mental Health practical examinations will be
conducted by a University of Technology Lecturer and a Clinical Preceptor.
Please find enclosed copies of the examination schedule. Each students assessment is for
approximately one hour and forty-five minutes (1hr 45mins) and they have been notified of their
respective examination dates. Please note that I have gone ahead and scheduled you to
participate in the examinations based on your days of availability.
Thank you for your kind cooperation and support in facilitating the learning of our students.

EXAMINATION GUIDELINES

Each student will be:

exposed to the tool prior to the examination

assigned one (1) patient on the scheduled day of exam

asked to administer & educate the patient on one (1) psychotropic medication currently
being administered to the patient @ Station 1 (10 minutes)

given a total of twenty (20) minutes to review the docket, clipboard, medication kardex
and make notes @ Station 2

given two Rest Stops totaling ten (10) minutes between Stations 1, 2, 3 or 4.

given a total of twenty-five (25) minutes to conduct a mental status examination of the
patient @ Station 3

allowed thirty (35) minutes to complete their documentation and care plans before going
to the examiners @ Station 4

asked to present a plan of care to the examiners using the nursing process (All written
care plans will be collected at the end of the time at station 4) @ Station 5 (15
minutes)

asked questions by either of the examiners pertaining to the care of the patient and
evaluated using the tools provided. The student may be scored 0-3 based on the listed
criteria.

given a TOTAL examination time of 2hours

The use of a drug guide or other text will not be permitted in the examination

an assessment of the mentally ill patient, and level of critical thinking, attitude, professionalism,
and communication skills employed in the delivery of care to the mentally ill patient.
