Chichibio, the cook, could not resist the temptation to cut
off a leg and eat it.
When the roast came to be served at the dukes table,
the duke noticed that the crane had only one leg and in a
severe voice, demanded an explanation from the cook.
All cranes, Chichibio had the nerve to say, have
only one leg.
Really? said his master. Then tomorrow we shall
go together to the pond to see. If it turns out that you have
tried to deceive me, you will be very sorry indeed.
The next morning, the cranes in the pond, like all of
their kind, were sleeping balanced on one leg only.
What did I tell you? said the cook with a sly smile.
The duke clapped his hands and the frightened cranes

Water for Life

Heading out for some exercise? Youll take your shoes,
socks, and a towel. You might take a music headset. But
youll also need a water bottle. Here is why. When you
exercise, you sweat. Sweating is your bodys way of
cooling down. The more you sweat, the more water your
body loses. But exercise also reduces thirst. If youre not
thirsty, you may not drink water. You could loss too much
water and become dehydrated. A water loss of 10 percent
can make you sick. A water loss of 20 percent can kill
you. So you need to be careful.
Heres how to keep your body hydrated. About two

hours before you exercise, drink one 500-milliliter (
liter) bottle of water. Then drink another half bottle right
before you begin. Drink water every 20 minutes as you
exercise. Youll need water long before youre thirsty.
You need water even when youre not exercising. You
should drink about four bottles of water each day. Why so
much? Your body cells are mostly water. So is your blood.
Water helps your body to digest food and remove wastes.
But your body loses water as you breathe, sweat, and
urinate. It loses about 2.5 liter (2,500 milliliters) of water
each day.
You must replace the water your body loses. You can
get water from many sources. Drinking water is the best
source. Food and other fluids are good too. All food has
some water in it. Fruits and vegetables are high in water.
Milk, juices, and other drink have water. So take your
pick. And remember to drink more water when you
exercise. A happy body is a hydrated body!
