VISION

www.nightingalehospital.co.uk
Title: Capio Nightingale Hospital Creates The Right Environment To Deliver High Quality Care
Location: London
Company: Capio Nightingale Hospital

The hospital is pioneering a patient centred approach to care

and offers a range of high quality, innovative and clinically
evidenced treatment programmes, which empower patients to
exercise genuine choice in the care they receive. In response to
demand, the hospital has designed new treatment programmes
to reflect the pressures that changing lifestyles are placing
on mental health; increasing use of technology, stress at
work, rising levels of obesity all require specific new treatment
therapies.
After extensive consultation with the hospitals multidisciplinary team of clinical psychologists, psychotherapists,
dieticians and consultants, the hospital has introduced highly
innovative treatment programmes that are not available
elsewhere. Over the last few years the hospitals portfolio of
services have expanded to include a Chronic Stress & Trauma
Service, a pioneering new Weight Management and Obesity
Service, the evolution of a Technology Addiction Service and
Square Mile Syndrome Service, in response to the recession and
subsequent increased work and financial related stress.

Capio Nightingale Hospital, Londons leading independent mental health hospital has
unveiled its newly designed modern facilities, which provide a high-quality environment
for its patients. The refurbishment is the culmination of the hospitals commitment to
patient-centered care, which has seen the hospital expand its portfolio of healthcare
programmes over recent years. The hospital has responded to the growing demand
for mental health care that is tailored to the needs of individual patients, and the
refurbishment enables the physical environment of the hospital to complement these
programmes.

Martin Thomas, Managing Director of Capio Nightingale Hospital

said: We have been working to design and develop the right
environment to deliver the best possible care to our patients.
This has involved working closely with the therapists and
consultants at the hospital to design treatment programmes
but also working hard to redesign the buildings and interiors
to complement the bespoke experience our patients want and
need. This is the culmination of working towards providing the
best possible care environment at a time when more and more
people are seeking private mental health support.

Capio Nightingale Hospital has completely redesigned its therapy rooms, including
modern group therapy facilities, consulting rooms and individual en-suite bedrooms
to ensure maximum comfort and privacy for all patients. The inpatient facilities are
now more akin to contemporary hotel rooms and amenities, with kitchens, lounges and
reading rooms available. A colour scheme has been selected to assist with patients
recovery. Green, which promotes balance, personal development and self-acceptance,
and blue, for its healing and mentally relaxing properties have been chosen for the
bedrooms. In addition purple, a colour considered liberating and freeing, has been used
in shared spaces through the hospital.

Title: The Two Energy Efficient Winners
Location: Germany
Company: Cabot Corporation

Much of the innovation is thanks to the involvement of over 30 industrial partners, manufacturers
of some of the best energy efficient building products and systems available. As architect Thomas
Rampp, explained, This project meant that we all had to change our traditional views and accept
new approaches to finding future solutions. For us the challenge was to adopt the variety of
innovative and novel solutions and to combine them in an ecological and cost-effective way into
the overall concept.
Aerogel in action

Energy Efficiency Center (copyright ZAE Bayern)

The Centers opening coincided with the announcement of the 2013 winners of the ICIS (the
Independent Chemical Information Services) Innovation Awards. Cabot Aerogel was awarded
Innovation Award with Best Environmental
Benefit as well as Best Overall Innovation.
The ICIS judging panel of leading industry
experts recognised Cabots research, effort
and development in bringing to market a
technology that is having a dramatic impact
on improving energy efficiency, and reducing
building energy costs in buildings around the
world. This is particularly significant because
Cabot Aerogel plays an important part in
the design and construction at EEC where
Lumira aerogel technology has been used in
two quite different ways.

The opening of Europes unique and innovative Energy Efficiency Center coincides
with a global win for one of the most innovative products used in its construction.

and materials, designed to demonstrate how they can be used to reduce energy
consumption dramatically.

Rarely does a building generate so much reaction. Rarely does it attract professionals
from every side of the building industry together with the interest of the general
public. This has been the reaction to the Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) of the ZAE
(Bavarian Center of Applied Energy Research in Bayern, Germany) - one of the most
innovative new buildings in Europe.

The Center comprises 3400 m on two floors, housing offices and laboratories
together with public information facilities and an Energy Plus exhibition which
showcases innovations, hands-on experiments and a wealth of other information.
The research side focuses on the implementation and development of cutting edge
technologies to optimise their interaction with each other and to demonstrate their
energy reduction efficiency. Visitors have the opportunity to see for themselves and
experience in practice how the innovative energy-efficient building components have
been integrated throughout the building.

As we all know, energy efficiency is fundamental to our future. It not only means
that our buildings have to minimise energy consumption in the the way they are
constructed and the materials used but also in the way they operate. At the same
time, they also have to provide a comfortable environment and cost effective lifecycle for the occupants.
EEC is a flagship project which performs equally as a showroom and a research
centre. Its construction is the physical interpretation of the very best technologies
6

ISSUE 2 2014

Clearly this combination of research, demonstration and dissemination of knowledge

from one central hub is generating a powerful boost for the implementation of
energy efficient technologies. EEC is fast becoming the driver with the ability to
generate maximum market impact and public awareness which in turn will educate
and accelerate innovation processes.

EECs roof is covered by a translucent roof

membrane that serves as weather protection
as well as forming the outer skin of the multilayer structured roof. This softly curved white
membrane roofscape plays a central role in
the design, allowing daylight to enter the
building from above while at the same time
serving as an adjustable climate zone to
reduce heat loss or cooling loads.
Within part of the inner insulating layer, there
are panels consisting of glass fibre reinforced
polyester which are filled with Cabot Lumira
aerogel. As a result, the translucent ceiling
design transmits the very best glare free and
shadow free conditions deep into the offices,
delivering the highest thermal performance
and excellent light diffusion compared to
more normal translucent systems. The office area comprises 24 ceiling panels filled with 50 mm
thick aerogel. These are Scobalit AGs SCOBATHERM translucent, highly insulating panels which are
widely used for roofs and walls. These provide a U-value of 0.41 W/mK, which is less than half the
value possible with a triple glazed glass unit also used in this application.

Aerogel between roof glazing (copyright ZAE Bayern)

Lumira aerogel

The second application concerns the numerous ceiling elements in the staircase area on the upper
floor. Here,OKAGEL light diffusing insulating glass units, manufactured by Okalux, are installed.
These comprise 12 translucent panels, each containing 30 mm of aerogel infill, which deliver a U-value
of 0.6 W/mK. The panels have extraordinary physical properties due to a filling of translucent silica
aerogel in the cavity between the panes: they have extreme heat and noise insulating qualities and
diffuse incidental daylight evenly in the room. The incidental light is rendered glare-free through
the functional glass, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
Using this unique system as horizontal glazing in the ceiling, daylight can be diffused deep into
the building. This is of particular interest to the building industry because currently no other glass
system can diffuse in this way with such a very low U-value. Not only does the sophisticated
coordination of the transmission properties of the membrane roof and ceiling elements result in
a high degree of visual and thermal comfort, it also reduces the requirements of artificial light
lowering costs for illumination.

Faster, Simpler, More Individualised

Professional services for market partners must also take into account the trend towards
increased process speed throughout the entire value chain - this is the basis on which Roto
has founded the development of progressive practical solutions for many years, assigning it
high priority, emphasised the components specialist at fensterbau/frontale.
He presented current results of the Close to the customer service-oriented strategy. The
focus was on the next generation of
an efficient online tool. Version 3.0
of the Roto Con Orders hardware
configuration tool offers a series of
substantial technical improvements
over the previous program, primarily
the integration of the complete Door
portfolio.
The expansion to include the door sector
represents an industry innovation and thus provides a significant, exclusive service.
At the same time, the web-based solution is now available world-wide, 24/7 and offers
considerable ease of use. First, a new interface makes it much faster and more intuitive
to use. Second, clear visualisation makes for a simplified user interface. Third, the
responsive design enables the use of devices such as PCs, tablets, and smartphones. In order to accelerate and simplify the processes further,
the system also offers clever additional functions.
These include: uploading of company addresses and logos in proposals, the set-up and administration of customer-related projects, the
integration of a discount rate structuring system, and material master data management. Roto Con Orders only requires a computer with a
web-browser and Internet access, as well as a one-time registration with an email address, in the manufacturer and dealer portal of www.
roto-frank.com. Another central theme on the Nuremberg building suppliers service agenda was the established Roto Lean concept, which
actively promotes the sustainable success of market partners. www.roto-frank.com

Franke Sissons Meets The BIM Challenge

Franke Washroom Systems, aka Franke Sissons, now has a number of products BIM
modelled. Most are for hospital and janitorial use areas where Franke Washrooms
is a leading supplier. The company is also working on modelling its solid surface
Miranit range which has been very successful in commercial building applications.
Essentially the UK Government has embarked with industry on a four year
programme for sector modernisation with the key objectives of reducing capital
cost and the carbon burden from the construction and operation of the built
environment by 20%. Central to these ambitions is the adoption of information
rich Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies that will unlock new
more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle

The second category is commonly known as Spread of Flame protection.

This is a fire-rating that is specific to how a particular substrate can prevent
a fire from spreading across its surface. An untreated wooden panelled wall
would have no resistance to the spread of flame across its surface and
cause the fire to spread into the rest of the building. This rating is measured
in two classifications: Class 1 or Class 0 Spread of Flame. These two
categories are now being replaced with a new internationaly recognised
test, now known as an SBI Rating.

HW Intumescent Paint achieves Scandinavian test requirements

The Envirograf HW02E intumescent paint system was recently used in
one of the most rigorous fire tests designed for testing coating systems,
known as the K210 test. The HW system was applied at 2 coats 8m per
litre per coat onto 15mm tongue and grooved pine-wood profiles, a typical
surface cladding (or wooden lining) used in the Scandinavian house sector.
The test is designed to evaluate the coverings ability to protect the
construction behind the covering. According to regulations a K210 rating
is required, ensuring that wooden linings of this type resist the fire for a
full 10 minutes ensuring that more flammable material behind the covering
does not ignite for that set time, in this way reducing the intensity of the fire
for the first critical 10 minutes, allowing the occupants effective escape to
safety.
The HW system successfully passed the EN 14135 test at the Danish
Institute of Fire and Security Technology (DBI) in Copenhagen, and is now
being specified throughout the Scandinavian housing sector market.

We are very aware of the importance of BIM modelling to our business and our customers, commented Andy Dukelow Managing Director of Franke Washroom Systems. All
of the products will be highlighted on our website, making it easy for customers, architects and specifiers to identify and make the choice that suits their needs. What will
be interesting for us, as early adopters, is to see whether this kind of modelling will help stamp out the last-minute, margin grabbing substitution of sub-standard products
that is so rife at the moment. If it does make it harder, then this will be a huge step forward in protecting British manufacturing www.franke.co.uk

ISSUE 2 2014

Spread of Flame Rating

The first category is to ensure that the structural elements

of a building designed to support a load (i.e. floor joists
that bear the overall floor structure), maintain their loadbearing capacity. The fire ratings required for loadbearing elements is generally measured in an amount of
time that that building element is required to maintain its
structural strength; commonly a 30 minute or 60 minute
fire rating.

The Government Construction Strategy was published by the Cabinet office on

31 May 2011. The report announced the Governments intention to require:
collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation
and data being electronic) on its projects by 2016 making BIM modelling an
essential for any supplier looking to supply products to the construction industry.
It is hoped that BIM modelling will go some way to preserve the integrity of
original specification by architects and specifiers as cheaper, poorer quality
products are unlikely to go to the expense involved of getting products BIM Modelled.

UGINOX BRIGHT, PATINA and TOP are terne-coated stainless steels
which take on the natural patina of aged lead sheet. This has
prompted English Heritage to endorse them as an acceptable
alternative to lead. Such nickel-free ferritic grades are invariably
lower in cost per square metre than copper and zinc, their
inherent strength enabling them to be used at gauges as thin as
0.4mm. Overall weight savings can therefore be as much as 35%.
All require minimal cleaning and maintenance and offer complete

Call for Brick Awards 2014

Once again, the search is underway to find the best brickwork
in action for the 2014 Brick Awards, organised by the Brick
Development Association.
The Awards are one of the top design and construction awards
in the country and show just what brick the UKs most popular
cladding material can achieve. Last years winners included
the Ortus , a learning facility in London, Carmelite Monastry in
Liverpool and the Britten Pears Archive in Suffolk.
Entrants are judged on a wide range of architectural design
factors including demonstrating the building fabrics
sustainability credentials and the aesthetical choice, blend and
bond of brick.
The judges are also seeking attention to structural and
aesthetical brick detailing, the buildings contribution to its
context and quality of craftsmanship.
17 prestigious trophies are up for grabs. A new category was
introduced last year the BDA Chairmans Award. This award is outside the judging panel and is in recognition of a project which fulfils a need that the
Chairman considers important.
The Awards are open to anyone, whether they are architects/designers, building owners, developers, housebuilders, contractors or brick manufacturers. The only
stipulation is that the project unless its featured in the Worldwide category must feature clay bricks or pavers made by BDA members.
The 2014 Brick Awards will be presented at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel in London on 12 November. Further information about the categories is
available on the BDA website, www.brick.org.uk, where an entry form can be downloaded.
Hard copies can also be requested by emailing brick@brick.org.uk or by calling 020 7323 7030. The closing date for entries is 14 June 2014.

Mobilane Launches
Irrigation-Free Living Wall
Mobilane, the leading supplier of living wall systems and green screens has
launched an irrigation-free living wall which is an upgraded version of its popular
Live Panel that requires minimal maintenance.

Live Panel 2 is suitable to cover large external walls or interior

spaces and is based on exactly the same principle as Live Picture
- a product it launched in 2013, which is a framed arrangement of
plants designed for small indoor spaces. The Live Panel 2 system
uses a tank watering system which is refilled usually no more than
once per week, depending on the size of the wall. It is much
quicker to install and costs less to maintain making Live Panel 2
being one of the most cost effective living walls on the market.
Interest in our irrigation free wall has already begun said Sean
Farrell Director of Mobilane The fact that we have a track record
in the industry of providing living walls that are reliable and dont
suffer heavy plant losses means we are well placed to bring new
innovative products to the market. This irrigation-free living wall is
almost fool proof; all you have to do is to automatically top up the
tanks and the wall will really maintain itself.
Farrell continues With living walls now widely recognised as
providing key solutions to air quality problems we anticipate interest
in this new product to be equally high. As well as providing cleaner
air and health benefits, living walls also create an immediate, and
ongoing, talking point. www.mobilane.co.uk

New Financial Year Gets Off To Healthy Start

Despite an economy described by business leaders as having significant challenges,
home improvements franchise Granite Transformations saw its UK network revenue rise
by a healthy 10% during 2013. It closed the year off with December sales up 16% and
started 2014 by eclipsing last years figures by 18%, On the international front, the
global home remodelling company has been named a recipient of a Franchise Business
Reviews Franchisee Satisfaction Award, which recognises franchisors with the highest
overall franchisee satisfaction.
We are riding the crest of a wave right now, says UK Chief Operating Officer, Danny
Hanlon. There have been plenty of great sales results in January and I cant even recall
a time where our franchisees have had so many enquiries coming through. Our franchise
owners are taking on new staff and we are currently designing seven new showrooms,
some in retail parks and others in garden centres. I foresee huge growth for the brand.
The franchises core product offering is its distinctive top that fits on top agglomerate
material, which installs neatly over existing worktops and tiled surfaces, as the
centrepiece of a kitchen or bathroom makeover. It recently introduced a brand new raw
material, the Porcelain collection, and three additional colours for 2014, giving franchise
owners something fresh to talk about with customers and lending extra dimensions to
the interior design palette.

The UK operation has also enhanced its franchisee support over the past twelve months,
with a thorough overhaul of its consumer website, master catalogue, library of sales
leaflets and central call centre operation, all aimed at maximising sales leads and
distributing them equitably to franchise owners.
The development of a garden centre-based Concession Site franchise model has also
proved popular with existing franchisees and potential investors, enabling a lowcost retail alternative to traditional high street premises. A manned concession site
in a destination centre with a good retail mix attracts Granite Transformations core
demographic and proves a definite sales fillip in a challenged economy.
Already this year, four Granite Transformations franchise owners have exceeded the 100k
mark for one months invoiced orders, positioning them early to break the 1 million
revenue barrier in 2014. Sales of replacement cabinet doors were also encouraging,
with several showrooms reporting 20% of turnover coming from doors alone; whilst one
showroom sold the first-ever Trend Clip2Go flooring solution, in a contract worth over
5k. With bathroom makeovers also coming on strong and one pioneering franchisee
installing an upscale, dedicated bathroom display, Granite Transformations increasingly
diversified product range is proving a hit with franchise owners and customers alike.

Granite Transformations has also announced closer retail ties with its parent company,
the Italian-based Trend Group, which will see a greater presence of Trend designer glass

Thomann-Hanry Named As Approved UK Applicator Of Qualiprotec

Thomann-Hanry, the experts in faade cleaning and restoration, announces today that
it has been named as the approved applicator of QualiProtec in the UK, expanding
their cleaning and renovation expertise into cladding. Managing Director, Mark
Styles, secured the deal in Switzerland last week at the Centre of Excellence for Paints
headquarters, Monopol Colors.
QualiProtec is an incredibly advanced fluropolymer coating for cladding which comes
with a 10 year no ifs, no buts guarantee and an unprecedented life expectancy of at
least 20 years. It offers instant life, shine and brilliance to dull, tired and damaged
cladding and, as its highly resistant to weathering and requires minimum maintenance,
QualiProtec is perfect for long term protection too.

Fluropolymer coatings have staggering advantages over traditional coatings:

Non-stick surface for easy post treatment cleaning
Long term cost savings
UV resistant - prevents colour fade

The unique fluropolymer component of QualiProtec has a molecular structure similar to

Teflon which ensures the coating is abrasion resistant, highly durable and repels water.
Everyday dirt, graffiti and pollutants can be easily removed making it simple and cost
effective to maintain.
Additionally, its UV protection has been tested with the Florida Test, the international
standard for weather exposure, where the coating has been tested in this US state
where the UV radiation is comparable to that of Dubai. After ten years of testing it
can be guaranteed that with a QualiProtec coating on cladding colour does not fade,
something that cannot be said for alternatives.
As approved applicators, Thomann-Hanry has just completed its first coating project at
2 America Square, London. Here, in addition to the cleaning of the limestone and brick,
the most impressive transformation was to the tired cladding located on the front faade.
This dull, golden cladding looked dated, shabby and dirty from the daily onslaught
of pollutants and heavy traffic outside. Once treated this visual transformation was
exceptional bringing an instant new lease of life to the buildings cladding and overall
appearance. A second job is already lined up in Berkeley Square and due to start shortly.

Bernd Plattner - Sales Manager Qualiprotec, Monopol AG, Thierry Schoen - Business Development Executive,
Thomann-Hanry UK, Lionel Schlessinger - CEO and Owner, Monopol AG and Mark Styles - Managing Director,
Thomann-Hanry UK in Fislisbach near Zurich last week

Mark Styles, Managing Director, Thomann-Hanry comments: As established leaders in

renovation and cleaning of masonry faades, we have been considering an expansion
to cladding for some time. However, it was critical to our business that any partnership
was with the best system possible, not only for our own satisfaction but to be reassured
that our clients were benefiting from the highest quality cladding renovation system
on the market. After a global search, over a period of time, were confident that this
QualiProtec system is literally the best coating system available.

New Schueco Aluminium Window Combines

Outstanding Acoustic And Thermal
Performance With Integral Solar Shading
New to the Schueco AWS aluminium window range is the
high performance AWS 120 CC.SI which combines exceptional
levels of sound and thermal insulation with integral solar
shading.
The window is officially Passive House certified when
appropriate glazing is used and is available as tilt/turn, sidehung inward opening or combined with fixed lights
The composite construction of the window takes the form
of an inner vent which is either double- or triple-glazed
coupled to an outer vent which is fitted with a single glass
pane up to 10 mm thick.
The cavity between the sashes accommodates a blind and,
together with the glazing, provides the optimum solution
for high sound reduction, without the need for unsightly
secondary glazing.
Since the concealed Venetian blind is integrated into the
window profile, it is protected from the weather and its
design prevents the possibility of thermal bridging. Its
presence provides anti-glare protection, solar shading and
solar screening without compromising views to the outside.
The 25 mm-wide louvre blades of the blind are made of a
special aluminium alloy designed to withstand the raised

temperatures in the enclosed space between the inner and

outer panes. The blades can be raised or lowered, and opened
and closed, by means of a compact 24V electric motor that is
concealed in the frame. When the blind is drawn up, the top
profile of the blind is concealed so that only a minimal stack
is visible.
For cleaning the cavity that contains the blind, the two vents
which are both hinged can be easily separated to provide
access to the inner glass surfaces as well as to the blind,
although the need for this is minimised by the presence of
perimeter seals.
The performance figures for the Schueco AWS 120 CC.SI are
impressive: U values as low 0.80 W/m2K and sound reduction
up to 53 dB is possible. Air permeability is Class 4 and
watertightness Class 9a with wind load resistance achieving
Class C5/B5.

Title: FLEXIBLE FLOORING FOR MODERN TIMES
Author: Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager

Article By: Schck Ltd

Title: If The Surface Temperature Factor (fRSi) Is Controlled Incorrectly, Thermal Bridging Is Likely To Result In Condensation And Mould Growth Problems
Author: Chris Willett, MD

Array is a very popular range within our creative flooring collection to which
six exciting new colours have recently been added to reflect the latest trends
in furniture colours. The Array tile chosen on the project has a striking lime
green surface pattern throughout, which perfectly complements the Broadrib
in Willow, which was laid in contrasting stripes throughout the ground floor
area. The result is an attractive, modern working environment, with clearly
defined zones to suit different needs of its users.
In the flexible, modern office environment, acoustics are also important,
especially when it comes to multi-occupancy buildings. The Broadrib and
Array ranges, for example, offer sound deadening properties that helps to
reduce noise pollution, therefore creating a harmonious working environment.

Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager at Heckmondwike FB, looks at how flooring

is increasingly being used to create flexible office workspaces.
"The trend for open plan design in new office developments looks set to
continue with partitions and barriers rapidly becoming a thing of the past and
new layouts aimed at encouraging greater team working and accommodating
flexible working.
Whether we love it or hate it, hot-desking looks set to stay and the growing
use of laptops and mobile devices means that there is often no need to be
restricted to one physical location. Flexibility also means allowing people to
work where they are most needed in a business, or where they feel most
effective.
Building designers and specifiers therefore face the challenge of having to
create office workspaces that allow for productive working, with comfort and
practicality, whilst also providing demarcation and a clear sense of purpose.
How to do that without erecting barriers and partitions is the crucial question
and here designers are specifying innovative colour choices for carpet that
create clearly identifiable zones, as well as adding interest and an element of
design to the floor space.
At The Wallis Building in
Nottingham, for example,
a workspace for new
high
technology
and
digital businesses was
given a contemporary
and eyecatching look
through the use of Array
fibre bonded carpet tiles
complemented by Broadrib.
The style of the office
is
open
plan,
yet
accommodates a large number of small businesses, so colour was used for
demarcation and clearly identifying the purpose of an area.

18

ISSUE 2 2014

Zoning is an effective and increasingly popular way of achieving demarcation

without barriers in offices and other open plan spaces. Increasingly interior
designers are choosing floor
and wall coverings as a way to
mark out specific areas within
an office building, promoting
the need for quiet work and
private discussions, as well
as encouraging the open
communication and team
working for which open-plan
offices are renowned.
On another recent project, ECE
Architecture, based in West
Sussex specified Broadrib and Array carpet tiles as part of the refurbishment of
Portland House, an office building for Adur and Worthing Council.
The project involved the supply of over 2,000m2 of Heckmondwike carpet
tiles. This included specifying Array fibre bonded carpet in purple, which was
complemented by Broadrib in purple and Array in blue, which co-ordinated
with Broadrib in blue. On this project, the accent colours were used to define
the walkways around the perimeter of offices and for demarcation of the fire
exits, as well as to add design and detailing. The architects on this project
chose Array carpet as it can be complemented by the accent colours of blue
and purple.
The accent colours clearly marked the large open plan work areas into zones
for ease of navigating the building, as well as breaking up large areas of
flooring and adding an extra element of design.
As the trend towards flexible working continues, specifiers and interior
designers are increasingly looking for vibrant accent colours that create a clear
distinction in the flooring for specific work areas, whilst also complementing
more muted tones. The result is aesthetically pleasing interiors which maintain
productivity and encourage team working whilst making the most of available
space and resources."
Sample cards for Array and Broadrib are available on request by calling +44 [0]

If the surface temperature factor (fRSi) is controlled incorrectly, thermal

bridging is likely to result in condensation and mould growth problems.
Chris Willett, MD at Schck Ltd, considers the issues involved.
To identify areas where there is a risk of condensation and therefore mould growth
in different design situations, a surface temperature factor (fRsi) can be used. It
allows surveys under any thermal conditions and compares the temperature drop
across the building fabric, with the total temperature drop between the inside and
outside air. The ratio is described in BRE IP1/06; a document cited in Building
Regulations Approved Documents Part L1 and L2 and Section 6 in Scotland.
It is a critical calculation, as the consequences of condensation and mould growth
are likely to be more serious for building occupiers than any local heat loss. If low
internal surface temperatures in the area of a thermal bridge are below the dew
point of the air, condensation is almost certain to form.

The actual formula as it relates to internal surveys is that fRsi = (Tsi Te) / (Ti
Te); where Tsi = the internal surface temperature; Ti = the internal air temperature;
and Te = the external air temperature.

Using the formula, the recommended (fRsi) value for offices and retail premises
is equal to or greater than 0.5; and to ensure higher standards of comfort for
occupants in residential buildings, equal to or greater than 0.75. In more extreme
conditions of high humidity, such as swimming pools or other wet areas, 0.9 would
be anticipated. In summary, the surface temperature factor required will depend
on the use of the building and the consequent internal relative humidity. To
eliminate the possibility of condensation and any resultant mould growth, the
higher the likely internal humidity, the greater the need for a higher surface
temperature factor.

This in turn is likely to result in structural integrity problems with absorbent

materials such as insulation products or plasterboard and of even greater concern,
the occurrence of mould growth. Practically every building contains mould spores
within its fabric which are dormant and completely harmless. However, given the
right conditions these spores will germinate and become a potential health risk to
occupants in the form of asthma and allergies.
Mould is not a new phenomenon of course, but a combination of circumstances is
elevating interest in the problem. Primarily these are better insulated and more
airtight buildings, improved energy efficiency requirements and much greater
environmental awareness. Mould starts to form when the relative air humidity
reaches 80%, and often before there is evidence of any condensation.
As the actual surface temperature will depend greatly on the temperatures both
inside and out at the time of the survey, the surface temperature factor (fRsi) has
crucially been formulated to work independently of the absolute conditions.

A choice of finishes and colours, along with matching frames and fascia make the Hrmann RollMatic
roller garage door, the premium choice for looks, while its intelligent design features make it the safest
and most reliable door on offer.
Patented spring compensation, force limitation incorporated into the automatic operator, and a barrel

The spring compensation not only makes the RollMatic operate smoothly and effortlessly but also
prevents the door closing suddenly, even when operated manually. A significant benefit of this
technology is that, in the event of power failure, the Hrmann RollMatic can be operated easily by
hand, without the need for a cumbersome crank handle.
This ease of use also adds to the convenience and longevity of this space saving option. Minimal
internal room is required to house the door, which can be opened even when a car is parked right up
to it.
The RollMatic also benefits from Hrmanns BiSecur radio control system that uses the same encryption
that online banks use, adding to security. This space saving, convenient and stylish garage door offers

New Service Minimises Hassle Factor In Changing Places

A new service from Clos-o-Mat is helping installers of assisted
washrooms minimise the hassle factor. The company, Britains
leading supplier of disabled toilet facilities, has launched the new,
online, experts blog service to help overcome issues arising during
installation of Changing Places public accessible toilets and hygiene
rooms. Says Clos-o-Mat Changing Places senior project manager
Kelvin Grimes. My blog enables installers and the management team
providing the toilet to quickly double-check any queries, on their
computer at work, or on-site via mobile phone or tablet. It flags
up little considerations that may not even have crossed someones
mind, but which could delay the whole project. And to be really sure, an early site meeting with us
further helps eliminate any problems. www.clos-o-mat.com

Clean And Bright Facilities Fit College Philosophy

Golden Anniversary Of The Concealed Cistern

The importance of clean, smart, effective WC facilities in schools

and colleges and the role they play in discipline and behavior
management is well-documented and this was certainly an
important consideration in the design of the new Wheelers Lane
Technology College in south Birmingham.
Over fifty Multikwik Sanitary System concealed bathroom frames
were used to create spacious, modern, and easy-to-clean WC
facilities at the college.
At Wheelers Lane, Multikwik Sanitary Systems frames were used
to hang WCs, sinks and urinals in three separate WC facilities
throughout the college. Because the sanitaryware is wall-hung, it
is easy and quick to clean round and underneath, keeping WC facilities looking clean and new for longer.
The Multikwik Sanitary System of concealed bathroom frames are particularly suited to these large-scale projects because they have been designed specifically to be simple to install
and easy to manage on site. Each module is supplied pre-assembled making it a doddle to install and everything needed to complete the installation of each frame is supplied in
the box, reducing the chances of hold ups and missing parts.
There is a complete range of sanitary frames in the Multikwik portfolio that make it cost-effective, reliable and above all straightforward to install wall hung sanitaryware. The
frames maximise bathroom space even the most compact bathrooms and cloakrooms and give a really modern professional finish. Add compact cisterns, sleek and stylish flush
plates, water saving flush valves and new chrome compression fittings and the Multikwik range now definitely has the wow factor.
www.multikwik.com

2014 will see Geberit celebrate the anniversary of the launch of its concealed cisterns. It has been 50 years since Geberit
first introduced the cistern that was mounted behind the wall rather than in front of it. Sparking the development of prewall
installation, which enabled a previously unimagined level of creative freedom in bathroom applications, over 60 million Geberit
concealed cisterns have been sold to date.
"The success of the Geberit concealed cistern in the UK has been achieved thanks to the strong brand name of Geberit, which
has become synonymous with the concealed cistern across Europe thanks to the partnership we have with our customers,"
comments Managing Director of Geberit Sales UK & Ireland Mark Larden. "Our installers, contractors, stockists and bathroom
retailers having continued faith in our products and innovations means that we can continue to lead the market in terms of
introducing systems and technology that give endless opportunities to bathroom design and cater for the changing needs of the
modern day living."
Mounting the cistern behind the wall rather than in front of it marked a paradigm change in European bathrooms. The concealed
cistern made it possible for additional sanitary fittings such as pipes to be installed virtually invisibly behind the wall. This
meant the whole bathroom could be designed entirely to suit each customer's requirements. With the various concealed cistern
versions and installation systems available today, plumbers can find a solution for every bathroom situation, even corner
installations or under sloping roofs.
Todays choice of hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical flush actuations open up new design possibilities, whilst ground-breaking systems like the odour extraction unit behind the
actuator plate integrate the latest technology seamlessly into bathroom design. Fifty years after the first Geberit concealed cistern was introduced, the manufacturer continues
to lead the field in terms of design and innovation. The Geberit Sigma80 touchless flush plate, for example, offers the user increased convenience and hygiene, while the Geberit
AquaClean Sela, is heralding a new era of freshness, hygiene in the domestic bathroom.

Clever Magnetic Glass Screening

From The Shopkit Group

Splitting The Shard With Skyfold

Contributing to the suitably prestigious interior of Duff
and Phelps new offices in the Shard, an impressive Skyfold
vertical-rising partitioning system has been installed by Style,
allowing the boardroom to be divided into two separate areas
at the press of a button.
This is the first commercial fit-out within the iconic Shard
building and leading global finance company, Duff and Phelps
was looking to create a refined and sophisticated office on the
14th floor.
Style worked with architects Gensler and Paragon Interiors to
deliver a partitioning solution that is not only an incredibly
effective acoustic barrier but also offers that wow-factor, as it
descends silently from within the ceiling cavity.
Style is the exclusive UK partner to Skyfold and, over the last
10 years, has installed this unique moveable wall in a number of prominent commercial offices throughout the capital, including in the head offices for Gensler themselves.
Taking up zero floor space when not in use, Skyfold unfolds from the ceiling to create a firm wall that offers exceptional acoustic privacy up to an unrivalled 59dB Rw. With an
almost limitless range of finishes available including stretched fabric, wood-veneers and even screen-printed images, design creativity is unsurpassed.
A second Skyfold is soon to be installed in the Shard, this time for South Hook Gas who was suitably impressed by the partitioning system during an inspection of the Duff
and Phelps fit-out. www.style-partitions.co.uk

Shopkit have just added some very clever mobile magnetic glass screens to their popular range
of contemporary products for commercial and home interiors. Made in their UK factory, these
mobile glass screens are minimal in style and yet are both strong and durable in construction.
They provide sleek and flexible ways to divide up open plan spaces, they are easy to move
around, reposition and lock into place.
But these are no ordinary mobile screens as they cleverly provide three uses in one! This is
because the glass panels are produced from a laminated sandwich of two sheets of glass with
a magnetic interlayer, which also allows them to be used as both drywipe and magnetic memo
boards.
The glass can be silk screened to any RAL paint colour so they can be specified to suit
their intended environment and they can also be supplied with different colours on either
side. The glass panels are housed within a rigid mobile frame that is available in stainless
steel or any RAL finish and comes with four durable castors (two lockable) as standard. The
dimensions and material finishes of these clever magnetic screens can all be varied to suit
clients requirements, and they can be made to any size, within the limitations of glass panels.
These screens are a great new addition to Shopkits ever expanding range of versatile and
adaptable screening and shelving solutions, available in different styles, materials and with
various fixing options to suit most interior applications from retail to domestic, exhibitions to
offices, cafs to receptions.

TILE OF SPAIN Trend Report 2014

Welcome relief
As technology advances, the 3D effect of tiles also moves on in terms of possibilities
and choice. A wave of new textures is now available in Spanish tiles, drawing from the
fine traditions of bas-relief, but re-invented for contemporary tastes, and enabling a new
vista of variety and interest when applying easy-care wall tiles. Undulating reed effects
are a keynote, but also extruded textures and embossed motifs.

The vibrant Spanish tile industry continues to push forward the aesthetic and
functional capabilities of ceramic and porcelain, offering inspiring new designs
and technologies to meet multiple applications and environments. Here are some
of the key themes spotted at the recent Cevisama tile fair in Valencia.

Indoor/Outdoor
Several leading Spanish manufacturers have developed tiling solutions for applications
that connect the interior to the exterior, enabling both coherent design themes and
high-performance functionality. These include differing formats within the same overall
aesthetic, so subtle zonal distinctions can be made while a rationality of style (and ease
of specification) can run through the project. Robust, durable, UV and frost resistant,
these collections can suggest a variety of stone, cement or distressed wood effects and
offer the ideal combination of versatility and visual harmony.

Playing with Perception

An exciting array of designs are evolving the geometric theme, often taking
this into the realms of optical illusion and hyper-reality. Creating 3D effects by
playing with repeating patterns, referencing the work of artists such as Escher
and Mondrian, bio-mimicking the octagonal beauty of the hive, using blocks
of colour and shape: an engaging range of new ideas from Spain are further
extending the horizons for designing with tile.

Concrete Plans
The subtle elegance of the poured or paved look for expansive flooring applications in
public areas continues to prove its worth both aesthetically and functionally. Ideal for
high traffic environments, tiled flooring solutions from Spain are designed to achieve
this effect by offering all the advantages in terms of durability and chromatic neutrality,
but in large, slimline and rectified formats that are quick to install and easy to maintain.

Beautifully Distressed
New methods are allowing Spanish manufacturers to achieve an appealing worn
and weathered appearance in tile designs that are conversely highly durable
and which will maintain this level of faded glamour for many years. Whether
suggesting the look of lived in wooden floors (but in a non-porous, easy care
format), mirroring the attraction of exposed brick (without any crumbling dust)
or creating an ethereal effect of fading patterns in self-coloured tones, the
distressed look offers a charming yet robust design solution.

High Tech for High Traffic

Key innovations include significant advances for addressing issues from strength to
hygiene to safety. Theres a new dirt-repelling, anti-bacterial, odour-removing technology
with a special titanium coating, plus a new 20mm thick porcelain exterior paving slab.
Renowned expertise in robust, slim-line, large-format tiles is extended in a range of
effects from marble to metal, and slip-resistance achieves an impressive R13 rating.
Digital printing techniques allow for increasingly efficient reproductions of imagery and
colour, plus the ability to print to textured and extruded surfaces. www.tileofspain.com

Precious Palaeolithic
Honouring the rare and noble stones featured in the worlds grand palaces and
museums, this theme takes its cue from the past while proposing a modern
solution in a high-tech format. From remarkable replications of glossy agate
and marble to the fine art of fossil hunting, a diverse range of new designs from
Spanish manufacturers makes it easier than ever to affordably choose and easily
install a luxurious mineral aesthetic.

Pietra Serena

Black Sapphire

Black Sapphire Sparkles Amongst Three New GT Colours

Black worktops are by far the most popular with UK customers of global kitchen and
bathroom makeover experts, Granite Transformations. So the inclusion of Black Sapphire
amongst three brand new worktop materials should go down well with homeowners,
looking for the distinguished look of a diamond-polished solid black surface, which goes
with most styles of kitchen, rustic or modern, and any choice of cabinet door.
New Black Sapphire takes the rich, deep, stylish appeal of black and highlights this with
fragments of deep blue and mirror fleck. The second colour Royal Beige adopts another
popular theme of neutral tones, adding a shimmer of beige, quartz, grey, silver flecks
and mother of pearl. While the third newcomer, Pietra Serena, elegantly fades to grey,
with a contemporary landscape of pale grey, misty browns and poinpoints of steel.
Granite Transformations current best sellers, Nero Stella and Black Star, reflect continued
customer preference for premium black granite worktops; although appearances can be
deceptive, because both are composite surfaces made from recycled raw materials and,
although Nero Stella is granite based, Black Star is actually made from pre- and postconsumer recovered glass. The materials have the same hardness as natural granite, but
are just a quarter-inch (6.7mm) thick, enabling them to be laid over existing worktops,
seamless edge pieces creating a desirable chunky look. They are stain, scratch, heat and
impact resistant and virtually maintenance free, unlike natural stone slab that requires
regular sealing.
Granite Transformations latest Black Sapphire finish shares the same superior technical
characteristics, including flexural strength equivalent to 5000lbs per square inch once
installed, and contains over 60% post-consumer recycled glass. This includes blue
recovered glass and blue avventurina, the characteristics of these raw materials being
taken into account at the design stage, to create a product that is outstanding in quality
and finish.

34

ISSUE 2 2014

Royal Beige incorporates all the latest raw materials from the manufacturers repertoire,
including recycled glass, recycled porcelain, recycled mirror and fine quartzite, blended
with polymer resin for outstanding strength and durability. This muted colourway, with
flecks of mirror that create a sparkling effect under halogen lighting, is perfect for
todays minimalist kitchens and bathrooms, teaming perfectly with cream or white
acrylic doors and simple Shaker styles in alabaster, pear and lissa oak.
With Pietra Serena, Granite Transformations returns to its design roots, with a smoothly
textured work surface made from recovered quartz, a natural mineral appreciated since
prehistoric times, and finely grained quartzite, again highlighted with recycled mirror
fleck for its reflective qualities. The light grey finish will work well in coastal and
lakeside settings, reflecting the abundant natural light, and complements the matt door
finishes, metallics and white ultragloss doors that are currently on trend.
As with all Granite Transformations makeover materials, these new products are fully
installed by a local showroom and, in the case of work surfaces, backed by a lifetime
material warranty. After precise measurements are taken in the customers home and
templates prepared, the worktop overlays are fabricated off-site, then installed by expert
fitters with no demolition, dust, debris or household disruption, most makeover jobs
taking only a day or so. For nearest showroom call 0800 044 5393 or visit the website at

SE Controls Smoke And Natural Ventilation

Solution For Airbus
A new 25,000m2 office building for leading aircraft
manufacturer, Airbus, is using an advanced smoke and natural
ventilation system from SE Controls to provide a comfortable
working environment for staff while ensuring that an effective
smoke and fire control strategy can be implemented in the
event of a fire.
SE Controls was involved in the project from the early stages
to clarify the ventilation strategy and provide calculations
on the free area requirements for the smoke vents to ensure
compliance and performance standards were met.
Four separate atrium spaces feature as part of the building,
designed by AWW Architects, and each incorporates 84 Schco
AWS 102 projected top hung vents.
The vents are automatically operated by a total of 336 SCCO 24
30 concealed actuators. In addition to installing the actuators,
the interface control panels were also supplied, installed and
commissioned by SE Controls together with the fire rated cabling, which is completely concealed within the curtain walling. During day-to-day operation, the natural
ventilation system responds to signals from sensors linked to the building management system (BMS) to ensure that the indoor air quality and temperature are
maintained within the pre-set parameters to maintain a comfortable working environment.
In the event of a fire, the buildings alarm system signals the natural ventilation system to automatically close all the vents as part of the smoke and fire control
strategy. This not only restricts the flow of oxygen into the building to help suppress the fire but also allows precise control to be taken by fire officers via the
systems manual control points, enabling smoke to be cleared from the relevant atrium.
As SE Controls actuators and Schco vents have been tested and proven to meet the European smoke vent standard hEN12101-2 and the Construction Products
Regulations that came into force in July 2013, the ventilations system is CE marked and fully compliant. www.secontrols.com or call +44 (0) 1543 443060.

Combining traditional ion exchange principles with modern TAC technology to produce
more efficient water softening. The unique delivery system allows the use of both TAC
resin and ion exchange resin. The combination of resins allows for pre-crystallization
of calcium and magnesium, this improves the efficiency of the ion exchange resin
resulting in fewer more complete regenerations. Up to 60% savings over traditional
timer based softeners.
The unique combined TAC and ion exchange softeners are more efficient than traditional
water softeners. They require less regeneration, use less salt, less power and have
higher resin capacity.
The family of Aquatiere softeners utilise various media, including Ceramet, TAC, ion
exchange resin and activated carbon and this provides a complete option of both
water softening and water treatment throughout the home or business premises. The
range consists of the Eco Tx, the Aquatiere Cx, the standard modular no scale units and
Aquatieres new cabinet-based, no scale, saltless water softener.
The Tx softener is ideally suited for homes and buildings with sporadic or partial occupancy as the softener will still offer

RigiSystems Introduces New Range Of Composite Panels

RigiSystems has introduced a new range of composite panels,
which complement the built-up systems. Composites can be
useful on many smaller installations that may not justify the
number of components required for a built-up system. Wall
panels can, however, be used as part of a built-up system in
order to provide the insulation layer.
This can be particularly advantageous in faade applications,
where a rigid insulation layer makes construction of the
faade both easier and quicker. Panels, both roof and wall, are
available in standard widths of one metre and lengths up to
16m, in a range of thicknesses to provide different U-values, and with either standard PIR core or fire
rated mineral fibre wool core. Email sales@rigisytems.org or www.rigisystems.org

The Ultimate Profile From Astron

A Roof Thats Better Insulated With Unilin

The LMR 600 Roofing System from Astron, part of the Lindab
Group, is the only completely integrated roll formed metal roofing
system on the market. Consisting of 600mm wide Aluzinc coated,
high tensile strength steel panels, with a 50mm high corrugation,
LMR 600 is suitable for roof slopes from 1.0 degrees to 30 degrees
and curved roofs with a radius of 70m or more. Each panel is
attached to the roof structure by a special clip and a sliding tab
assembly which allows the roof to expand and contract in line
with changing temperatures. The unique 360 degree double lock Pittsburgh seam assures the highest standards of watertight
integrity. Once the panels are seamed the entire roof forms a

UNILIN Structural Insulated Roof Panels by UNILIN,

division insulation, can deliver better thermal performance
for every inch when compared to traditional mineral wool
insulation. On average, to achieve the same U-value, a
UNILIN roof can be 30% thinner than one constructed with
other insulation materials.
Thanks to the high-grade PIR insulation with a low lambda
value, UNILIN panels not only make buildings more
thermally efficient, they make them roomier too. With
a system designed to bring this excellent performance to
traditional pitched roofs, UNILIN is at the forefront of the
revolution for UK-style domestic dwellings that can be
rapidly constructed to create a thermally efficient building envelope. www.unilininsulation.com

RIEFA Lightweight Living Roofs

Riefa boards are a new type of green roof substrate. They are a hi-tech fibre board made from organically grown and sustainable
natural resources, including rye flour and tree bark. The manufacturing process is essentially the same as baking: the ingredients are
mixed in dough bins and then baked in second- life biscuit ovens.
Riefa boards are primarily used as an insulation board in the manufacture of doors and as a sound insulation in partition walls.
The dimensions of the boards in their dry condition are 18mm thick and 2400 x 1200 mm, and they only weigh 1kg. This makes
them very easy to transport and distribute across the roof. The Riefa organic fibre roof-growing medium is made and produced in
a demonstrably sustainable way, it is the light, fits neatly into place, its low depth profile doing away with the need for expensive
alterations to parapets. Easily installed over tired or redundant roof covers, a simple rubber membrane overlay eliminates the need
for expensive removal and removes the need for the disposal of hazardous oil-based systems.
Contractors do not need specialist skills to install the Riefa system. It fits seamlessly onto sloping, pitched or shaped roofs of all
kinds. Nutrient rich and superb at retaining water, Riefa boards have been tested to destruction as a growing medium. To come and
see us at Greenbuild expo in Manchester on May 6/7 and at the Chelsea flower show in May.

Coxdome Sheds New Light On Waylands Academy

The re-roofing of an education building dating from the 1950s has
included the installation of nearly 70 Coxdome Trade Range Rooflights
in different sizes, improving both the appearance and the thermal
performance of the building while offering optimum natural daylighting
to areas such as corridors and kitchens as well as classrooms.
The decision to replace the 60 year old existing rooflights was taken
for a number of reasons aside from their actual aged appearance, many
of them leaking and offering poor security as well as little insulation.
By contrast, the double-skinned polycarbonate enclosures to the
Coxdome Trade Range rooflights offers much improved thermal
performance and the avoidance of condensation.
In addition, while the 67 contemporary Coxdome units offer good
standards or airtightness and weather resistance where the domes seal
against their frame, they were specified with either trickle ventilators
or manually operated vents, depending on their location. The rooflight
dimensions also varied with sizes including 1050 x 1050 mm and 1000
x 2200 mm.
A proportion of the new Coxdomes were supplied with kerb adaptors to assist with incorporating them into the high performance built-up felt system.
The new Coxdome rooflights with their tough but low weight polycarbonate domes proved easy to handle and straightforward to fit for Faber Roofings
operatives, while the upstands offer an ideal slope up which to dress the roof-covering.
The Coxdome Trade Range comprises an out-of-plane universal rooflight system available in a choice of shapes and sizes, as well as double, treble and
quadruple skinned options.
The CE marked range not only meets Building Regulations, but with the roof membrane dressed up the splayed or vertical sides to the PVC-u upstands,
the completed installation offers unrivalled resistance to rain penetration. In the case of the double glazed rooflights specified for the different areas
of Waylands Academy their construction provides a U-value of 2.6 W/m2 K and a sound reduction figure of 20 dB. High security fixings are incorporated
as standard. www.jet-cox.co.uk

53 Electro Roof Windows And Blinds For Essex Academy

Two new timber buildings at Ockendon Academy have seen use of
53 FAKRO Electro roof windows with blinds. 16 were installed in the
7-classroom English block while 37 were used on the larger Ockendon
Studio School, a self-contained 6th form facility for year 12 and 13
students.
Cabinco, which specialises in eco building, and the construction of
sustainable school buildings in particular, was main contractor for
both projects.Designs focussed heavily on the provision of large,
open plan teaching areas. As a result, it was particularly important to
maximise availability of natural light and with both buildings having
low pitch roofs the roof windows play a crucial role. www.fakro.co.uk

ALM Warmfast
Fixings Isolate
Cold Bridges In
Metal Roofs
Thermal
bridging
on metal roofs is
a major threat to
fulfilment of any
systems design life.
Without
adequate
ventilation and an
effective vapour barrier, cold metal fixings penetrating
the insulation will cause condensation.
ALM Warmfast fixings are isolated between the outer
skin and substrate, compressing the built-up layers and
leaving no interstices to provide condensation points.
Their telescopic function adjusts to accommodate
compression while polypropylene sleeves provide low
thermal conductivity. Usable for insulation thicknesses
up to 970mm, they can also be installed with overlapping
joints to prevent air leakage. The fixing plate has a similar
centre to a conventional cleat but has a pull-out value of
1kN using only one fixing rather than three. A reinforced,
self-adhesive vapour barrier has also been developed for
trapezoidal decks, sealing around the numerous throughfixings which typify this type of construction.

40 Years Roofing Protection Of Astronomical Observatory

Forty years ago, Belzona was approached by The Mills Observatory
as they were seeking urgent roof protection for the observatorys
deteriorating papier-mch domed roof. The observatory required
a solution that would not mask the design of the dome and
ensure excellent adhesion to the existing roof substrate. They
also required a coating that would have sufficient elasticity and
flexibility to tolerate movement. Belzona was able to provide this
using a fully reinforced Belzona 3111 (Flexible Membrane) system
to encapsulate the dome in 1974. This system was further applied
in 1988, when the dome was undergoing refurbishment and again
in 2003 after small areas of the dome were discovered to have
sunk. Following a recent visit, the dome was found to be in perfect condition and continues to uphold
exceptional weatherproofing protection. www.belzona.co.uk

Safesite Helps The Isle Of Wight Ferries To Run Smoothly

Safesite Ltd has installed KeeGuard Topfix and Kee Walk for Wightlink Ferries on their refuelling tanks moored in Portsmouth Harbour to allow safe access to
the sounding caps and level sensors on top of the tanks. Wightlink catamarans and ferries are the main link between the Isle of Wight and mainland UK, with
nearly 50,000 sailings per year. Refuelling for the vessels is carried out via specially designed floating oil & gas platforms which are moored in the harbour. These
platforms allow the vessels to refuel as and when needed without disrupting the daily services.
Safesite was contacted by Wightlink to carry out a survey and recommend the most appropriate solution to allow safe access onto the tops of the tanks for the
sounding caps and level sensors which are used to monitor the
tank fuel levels.
KeeGuard Topfix which has been designed specifically to
provide collective edge protection for metal profile roofs allows
safe access onto both tanks while Kee Walk anti-slip walkway
provides a level walking surface to the sounding caps and level
sensors.
As the platforms are floating its essential that those working
on top of the tanks are protected explains Ben Phillips, Route
Superintendent. Safesite was able to offer a combined solution,
providing both fall protection and a safe, firm surface to walk
on.
Safesite has a team of qualified engineers and designers who
are able to adapt systems to provide a solution to virtually every

Sika Creates Watertight Terrace At Blackpool Beach Bar

Over 200m2 of a Sika fast curing flooring solution has been specified to create an impact
resistant, durable and waterproof finish at the 3million regeneration of the Walkabout
Bar in Blackpool helping the venue to reopen just four months after it was destroyed
by fire.
During the refurbishment, the three-storey building was reconfigured to include
new bars, improved facilities and a stunning outdoor terrace overlooking the town.
Appointed to install an external waterproofing system which would provide flexibility,
watertightness and resistance to footfall, specialist contractor Mike Thelwell Flooring
turned to the product performance, technical knowledge and practical expertise of Sika.
To create the hard-wearing floor, a three component Sikafloor Pronto system
comprising primer, levelling mortar and a fast curing top coat was applied within just
5 working days. In addition to exceptional waterproofing abilities, the self-smoothing
screed and levelling mortar was scattered with quartz sand to resemble a sandy beach
whilst maintaining the watertight and slip resistant surface.
Laid to falls to five drain outlets, these were waterproofed individually by dressing Sika
Fleece into the openings and encapsulating the fleece into the resin system to maintain
a seamless transition. The perimeter upstands were also waterproofed by forming the
system to a height of 150mm up the walls.

Heating professionals or property owners looking to

achieve underfloor heating with optimum performance
and reliability need only have one name to remember:
Hydronik.
As a long established manufacturer of high performance
underfloor heating systems, Timoleon has united
its tried, tested and trusted products for timber and
screeded floors under the new brand name.
For suspended and batten floors, the Hydronik
range offers ToronFloor, which is laid complete with
insulation, like a conventional chipboard floor, and the
pipe simply pushed into the panel. When access is
only possible from beneath, the specification would
switch to InterDeck where the panels are easily cut to
size so that they can be fitted between joists.
Where space is tight, especially in retrofit situations,
installers can make use of LowBoard, which is just
13mm thick, but accommodates 12mm pipework for
excellent heat output. FoilBoard is suitable for floating, suspended and battened floor constructions. The panel thicknesses start from just 25mm and feature an
integrated foil diffuser, which optimises heat output. Overall, customers can take confidence in the Hydronik name because the products are tried, tested and trusted.
Tried because Timoleon has produced thousands of well-engineered and reliable products used by clients over many years and are backed up with detailed design
assistance. Each Hydronik underfloor heating system carries relevant technical approvals from independent testing bodies and trusted because Timoleon allocates
a dedicated project manager to ensure smooth running from all stages and a successful completion of each project. For more information on the Hydronik range of

Cambridge Self-Builders Choose Timoleon To Deliver Underfloor Warmth

The owner of an aspirational self-build home, featured on the television series,
Building the Dream, has made use of two different systems from underfloor
heating specialist Timoleon to create a comfortable and controllable environment
within the highly insulated German manufactured structure.
The single and two-storey residence, located in one of the UKs fastest rising
property hot-spots at Over near Cambridge, has been constructed using an
advanced off-site manufactured timber framed system offering optimum levels of
sustainability as well as style. The elevations display a blend of white render,
timber boarding and high performance glazing, including three sets of sliding
doors facing onto the courtyard style garden.
In harmony with the high performance building envelope, the designers for the
project have specified a very energy efficient heating system. Installed on the
ground and upper floors respectively, it features both the Staple and the Foilboard
Batten systems from Timoleon designed to deliver the space heating. Pure Heating
and Plumbing of Cambridge carried out the installation work. It is a characteristic of
both heat pumps and modern condensing boilers that they operate most efficiently
in combination with underfloor heating systems, due to their flow temperatures.
In this case the space heating demands are relatively low and the M&E contractor
decided to specify two of the options from the Timoleon product portfolio;
enhancing the efficiency and facilitating the responsiveness required.
The Staple system has been developed primarily for the installation of underfloor
heating pipe coils over screeded sub-floors, with the pipework itself being held
in place using barbed clips, which bite into the insulation. The Timoleon Gridded
44

Insulation boards feature an aluminium foil surface that offers enhanced retention
characteristics as well as a convenient grid guide, which assists in achieving a
regular pattern at the specified 150 mm centres.
The Foilboard Batten systems panels are intended to fit between timber battens
and feature soft-temper aluminium heat diffusers. This construction ensures that
when chipboard, OSB or other flooring is fixed across the top that it is in direct
contact with the Foilboard diffusers; improving efficiency of heat delivery.

Contemporary Tormax Access At Cathedral

Reynaers Launches Its Building Information Modelling Library

As part of a multi-phase redevelopment at Durham Cathedral, TORMAX was specified by architectural glass specialists, OAG and
architects Purcell, to install two contemporary automatic glass swing doors to provide clear access to the new Cathedral shop and
restaurant. Helping maintain the heritage of these vaulted undercrofts, TORMAX
used their concealed iMotion 1401 operators. Located within the floor space, the
operators have almost no working parts to wear out, delivering enhanced reliability
and life expectancy, coupled with reduced on-going maintenance.

Supporting architects, construction and fabrication partners throughout the building industry Reynaers has released its latest Building Information Modelling (BIM) library,
enhancing collaborative partnerships. Based on Autodesk Revit, Reynaers BIM system provides fully compatible models of Reynaers systems for integration into building
designs, plans, and simulation. Accessible via the Reynaers
Extranet, the library includes product data, operation
details, maintenance information, guarantee data and
relevant web links all in a downloadable digital format.

Working with construction and fit-out specialists Simpson York Ltd, an existing side
door was also automated using iMotion 1401 operators, successfully minimising the
impact on the architectural heritage of the external faade.
Attracting over 600,000 visitors a year, Durham Cathedral is a busy attraction that has
to meet the expectations of the modern tourist without denigrating such a valuable
heritage site. Requiring particularly sensitive restoration, the medieval undercroft
where the shop and restaurant are located is one of the most remarkable intact
vaults in the UK. Maintaining the visual impact of the stunning vaulted ceiling,
visitors access the shop and restaurant through automatic full-glass swing doors, set
into glass dividing walls. Visible door drives would potentially jar with the historic
setting and this is where the iMotion 1401 comes into its own.
Fully DDA-compliant, the powerful iMotion synchronous motor has an exceptional
operating lifespan as there are no abrading parts to cause friction wear. This has the
added advantage of ensuring the doors really do open and close in silence, making
it the perfect for solution monastic environments such as the Cathedral. Adjustable
electronic obstacle recognition ensures user safety whilst opening and closing speeds
and hold-open time can all be set via a user-friendly keypad to deliver safe operation
depending on pedestrian speed and volume of footfall.

The library includes a comprehensive collection of Reynaers

systems such as windows, doors, sliding doors and sliding
and folding doors with additional products being added on
a regular basis. In total some 130 BIM models of various
aluminium systems are currently available. Becoming more
and more widely used throughout the UK, BIM is universally
accepted by architects, engineers and contractors as an
indispensable tool for their businesses. D

took a contemporary approach that combined bold and practical elements into an imaginative modern
design.
The architects looked to CRL-Blumcraft 1301 Series All-Glass Entrance Systems that contain the
slimmest door rail profile in the industry, allowing for virtually uninterrupted glass viewing areas to
elevate the high-concept buildings modern aesthetic. 1301 Series Entrance Doors are the original.
Often imitated but never matched, this system provides the most glass with the least metal of any
entrance door system on the market.
This award-winning project serves as just one example of C.R. Laurence s ability to provide architects
and designers with well-engineered products for a wide range of projects of varying sizes, aesthetics,
timelines, and performance criteria.

New Tormax Door

Drive Has Slimmest
Profile Yet
Extending
their
already
comprehensive range of
automatic door operators,
TORMAX has launched the
iMotion 2302 sliding door
drive. Filling a gap in the
market, the 2302 has an
especially narrow installation
height of just 150mm, making it slender enough to blend seamlessly into
the faade of almost any building. The new iMotion 2302 successfully
delivers a reduced-height operator, allowing a truly minimalist automatic
entrance to be created.
All iMotion operators are almost entirely manufactured using recyclable
materials which coupled with exceptionally low-energy operation makes
TORMAX a sustainable solution in the long-term. Significantly reducing
maintenance requirements and down-time, the high torque synchronous
motors have none of the parts that usually need replacing such as brushes
and gears whilst a health and safety self-monitoring system automatically
makes necessary alterations in performance or signals an alert.

LCD Privacy Glass

As UK interior designers continue to embrace the use of glass as an interior feature, ESG are predicting a rise in demand from residential customers for its ESG
Switchable Glass range. This glass changes instantly to suit the needs of the home owner, switching from clear to opaque at the push of a button. It allows for
maximum light dispersal and a feel of open space and delivers
complete privacy when the need arises. A key feature of ESG

people are seeing this as a perfect material for modern bespoke
bathroom installations.
As the market sees a rise in
the number of bespoke shower
fittings, ESG has seen the rise
in the number of switchable
panels being ordered to create

Brio Single Run Offers Zero Clearance

Brio, the leading architectural sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, has
developed a wide range of fixings for exterior and interior sliding timber doors with its
Single Run portfolio. Now the company has added an option to the range to make floor
to ceiling sliding doors more streamlined.

top hung system from room dividers to agricultural and industrial doors from 60kg to
650kg. The system is suitable for one panel sliding to one side or two panels bi-parting
on a single run of track. Panels can also slide parallel to one another making Single Run
suit just about any application.

Floor to ceiling sliding doors and shutters are becoming more and more popular in
domestic, commercial and retail environments, providing in-built flexibility for how the
space is used. However, Brio realises floor to ceiling doors present their own challenges
when it comes to sliding door hardware. To achieve the modern minimalist look you need
unobtrusive hardware that can be discreetly hidden from view.

Single Run 60 & 80 are suitable for a single door or for two doors on a bi-parting
installation for doors up to 60kg in weight. Single Run 120 is designed for panels up to
120kg in residential or light commercial sites. The corrosion resistant cast stainless steel
hangers make this a durable solution for high traffic areas.

Brio has risen to those challenges by offering its Single Run 100 top hung system with
a Zero Clearance option. Single Run 100 Zero Clearance hardware allows minimal gaps
between the door panel and hardware, offering a pleasing aesthetic finish on floor to
ceiling installations. With no hanger plates or screws protruding above the top edge of
the door, Single Run 100 has been designed to achieve clearances of 3mm between the
track and the top of the door. And, to go with the discreet top, the new spring loaded
guide and bottom rail can also be concealed within the bottom edge of the door thereby
extending Zero Clearance to floor level.
Single Run is designed for use on interior and exterior sliding shutters and doors in
residential or light commercial settings. The application caters for any straight sliding

Single Run 180 is probably the most versatile with a weight bearing of 180kg and this
product can accommodate an aluminium-framed panel 2.5m x 2.5m with 10mm thick
glass on a single track or parallel to another panel. Single Run 180 is suited to both
internal and external residential, commercial and light industrial applications.
Single Run 250 is a top hung galvanised steel sliding door track system suitable for
commercial, industrial and agricultural applications. The use of structural aluminium
in a track with a 3mm wall enables Single Run 250 to cope with 250kg loads. All

Total Glass Products Help New Homes Reach Level 3

Thermally-efficient PVC-U windows and Secured by Design-accredited composite doors supplied by Total Glass have contributed to newbuild homes at Norris Green Village in
Liverpool reaching Level Three of the Code for Sustainable Homes. In addition to the A-rated white casement windows, the Merseyside-based PVC-U and aluminium window and
door fabricator also supplied PVC-U French doors for the rear of the properties, built by Countryside Properties for Liverpool Mutual Homes.
The 40 new eco-friendly homes were built on vacant land adjacent to Broad Lane where LMH last year completed a 4m scheme transforming 74 derelict properties earmarked for
demolition a decade ago into eco-homes. Total Glass had also manufactured and supplied the thermally-efficient PVC-U windows with a 1.4 W/m.K u-value in a grey on white foiled
finish for this refurbishment scheme, which incorporated similar energy-saving features to the new homes, including solar panels.
The new development includes four two-bedroom bungalows, 22 two-bed houses designed for four people, 12 three-bed houses catering for four people, and two four-bed houses
designed for six people. Solar panels and double-glazed windows enable the properties to reach Level Three of the Code for Sustainable Homes resulting in fuel bills being halved
and carbon emissions cut by nearly two thirds.

Modified And Engineered Timber Provides The Answer

Increasingly, the joinery and construction sectors are looking to specify products which
are not only dimensionally stable and durable but also legal and sustainable and both
Accoya and WoodEx - which are supplied by James Latham - offer an attractive
solution.
Accoya
One of the most advanced wood products on the market, Accoya is a modified, highly
durable and dimensionally stable certified softwood, incorporating Accsys proprietary
wood acetylation technology which delivers outstanding levels of performance, stability
and durability. Guaranteed for 50 years in exterior use and 25 years when used in the
ground, Accoya is produced using modified, fast growing species and can be safely
recycled.
As impressively durable as the highest quality tropical hardwoods, Accoya is a quality,
long lasting product that is suitable for a wide range of external joinery applications
including windows, doors, decking, structural and much more.
Plus, Accoya is a perfect solution for exterior cladding, siding and faades where
aesthetics, less frequent maintenance, dimensional stability, durability and insulation
value are key factors. Accoyas versatility makes it ideal for use in residential,
commercial and industrial structures.
WoodEx
Produced from laminated Oak, Sapele and European Redwood, WoodEx offers numerous
features and benefits. It has two high quality, clear faces for use in joinery applications
and is ideally suitable for use in timber doors and windows as the product offers greater
dimensional stability.

56

ISSUE 2 2014

In addition, WoodEx is made from finger jointed lamells which are glued together, and
James Latham can supply the product either as finger jointed or as one piece.
James Lathams Group Product Sales & Development Manager, Paul Leach, commented:
As demand for sustainably modified wood continues to grow, whether for windows,
doors, decking, cladding or other joinery applications, Accoya is a fantastic material
for external specification.
He added, Having introduced WoodEx to the market last year, we have had a fantastic
reaction from the joinery and construction sectors due to the options it offers. In
line with growing demand, our stock of WoodEx now covers a wide range of sizes and
species and provides a versatile addition to our already extensive timber range.
WoodEx is available ex-stock in lengths of 0.8m to 3m, (6.0m in finger jointed faced
Redwood) and in sizes ranging from 48mm x 95mm to 72mm x 120mm. Special sizes

THE BOOK/FIRE PROTECTION

Internal - 30 & 60 minutes fire protection

Timber Ceiling at Clifton Hill House, University of Bristol

Naturvent Innovation In Fire Safety

Ash Fire Managements Naturvent System is being showcased in a series of
demonstrations taking place in North Weald, Essex.

60 minutes fire integrity to BS476 Part 21 (1987)

1 coat clear primer
3 coats HW02/E
1 coat HW03/UV clear matt
AM mastic (brown) in joints between floor boards

To keep the appearances and to be able to use upper

floors at University of Bristol, the open joists and floor
boards were again coated with 3 coats of HW02 at 8m
per litre per coat and brown AM mastic between joints
which had shrunk over the years, giving 60 minutes
integrity, insulation and load bearing.

Based on established technology that has been in use for many years in large
commercial premises, Ash Fire Management has adapted this technology
for application into the residential housing sector utilising innovative and
patented variations.
This is an important advancement in the fight
against the threat to life caused by the biproducts of fire. Using the latest technology in
fire detection, the Naturvent system will vent
the toxic gases and fumes that incapacitate
victims. Testing at BRE has shown that the
period of survivability is greatly increased with
a Naturvent system installed, as can be seen
on the adjacent graphs of the data recorded.
Oxygen levels are maintained and visibility greatly enhanced enabling a safer
operating environment for the fire and rescue services.
The timber framed house that was used for the BRE tests is being re-built for
the demonstrations next month. Anyone interested in attending these live
demonstrations is urged to email demos@ashfire.co.uk as soon as possible as
place are limited. www.ashfire.co.uk

THE BOOK/FIRE PROTECTION

Protecting The Jewel In The Crown

The Ashmolean has carried out in close partnership with Worcestershire County Council, Keil family as well
as various regional organisations to convert this historical building in the jewel of the Cotswold village of
Broadway, Worcestershire, into an innovative independent museum: The Ashmolean Museum Broadway.
Contractors from Broadway based Highgate Construction Ltd were approached to conduct the work on the
project and on initial inspection noted that the building required fire protection to bring it up to regulation
standards of 60 minute fire integrity to BS 479 part 21: 1987 to protect the building in the case of fire.
On contact with Specialist Fire Solutions a regional office of Envirograf, they advised and carried out the
application of Envirograf intumescent coating system product 96 EP/CP to upgrade the 285 sq metres of lath
& plaster which will bring the building up to the above standards.
Launched in September 2013, the new Museum is located in Tudor House on the main High Street in Broadway.
It is truly one of the most cherished and most desired villages in the Cotswolds and Tudor House is among its
most significant buildings. Originally constructed in the seventeenth century as a coaching inn, it has been
extended as well as modified over the centuries and functioned in a number of periods as part of a school,
a farm, in addition to a private residential home for various owners, which includes Benjamin Chandler who
renovated the property with the Arts and Crafts architect, CE Mallows, in 1908. For almost 80 years, it had been
the headquarters for H.W. Keil Ltd, considered one of the prominent dealers in antique furniture in the world.
The items on display are on loan from the Ashmolean Museum. They incorporate paintings and furniture from
the founding collections of the Ashmolean, provided by Elias Ashmole to the University of Oxford in 1683.
The exhibits of fine art from the 17th to the 21st centuries span over three floors, and the collection includes
local objects such as Sheldon tapestries, Worcester porcelain, Armorial Ceramics of Broadway families, William
Morris tiles and Winchcombe Pottery. One can find paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Millais and Landseer.
The top floor comprises of a dedicated gallery for temporary exhibitions, offering local artists as well as
community groups with the opportunity to host exhibits, education and outreach programmes.

FIRE PROTECTION/THE BOOK

Oxbridge Survival- Hinges On Success

Many of our great educational establishments including Cambridge and Oxford
Universities, have recognised that their proud history could disappear in an instant
without proper protection being installed from the ravages of a fire. The initial fabric
of a public building will have been designed in a way, that in the event of a fire,
each section of the building can be compartmentalised with strong fire resistant fire
doors.
These doors are our front-line soldiers in a fire and they must offer a strong resistance,
however, door frames are often overlooked, and with gaps around frames being left
and unsealed by fire protective mastic, the fire door could be rendered unable to
fulfil its requirements.
Envirograf have studied and assisted many educational establishments in the
last thirty years to perfect a safety programme, that can offer an outstanding fire
protective solution, and massively increase the survival rates of the occupants and
restrict the damage in the event of a fire. Fire doors rely heavily on door closers and
with the old conventional method of an external closer being fitted, these unsightly,
outdated units are considered by some to be a relic of the past and and also pose a
potential risk of vandalism and damage.
Envirograf have perfected self-closing hinges which are currently being used in
Cambridge and Oxford Universities and have been tested to BS476 Part 22 (1987)
and to EN1634-1 (2000) for 68 minutes fire resistance and by FIRA for age, wear,
and weight for 80,000 cycles at 90 degrees and 90,000 cycles at 400mm opening
and closing. These hinges are CE approved and are available in a range of colours
and finishes.
Doors are often painted, or even in some cases they are re-fitted due to range of
issues including atmospheric conditions. Fire and smoke seals are often difficult to

remove and can be easily damaged and then discarded, which can be a very costly
operation. Envirograf have introduced the Push-Fit fire and smoke door seal, for a
fast solution to the problem.T
he seal can be easily removed from the top or the bottom of the door section for
essential redecorating, without the need for masking the seal, for painting purposes
and can then be re-sited over and over again . This revolutionary seal offers up to 60
minutes fire protection, and simply clips in and out of the rebated groove and does
not require double sided tape or pins to fix, making the operation very easy, fast and
extremely cost effective.
Even in new buildings, additional services are added after completion, these services
often require cabling, ducting or pipework and holes are cut into the fabric of the
building with very little thought being given to fire protection. Envirograf have
developed EN/F a powerful fire protective filler kit which includes two tubes of tough
resilient intumescent graphite compound that can be used around the service. The
graphite will expand in a fire, and seal the service hole to provide a formidable fire
protective barrier, a third tube in the kit contains white intumescent sealant which
can be used as a decorative finish. Fire tested at Efectis test centre in Holland, the
product achieved 120 minutes fire protection and insulation.
If our educational establishments are to be successful and to last for many years to
come, then every area where a fire can spread, must be addressed, to minimise the
possible impact of turning a relatively small incident into a major catastrophe , and
thus ensuring the safety and survival of the building and its occupants!

Mapei System Joins Cutting-Edge Spec In Wilmslow

A Mapei wall protective and decorative system has been
specified alongside an ICF (insulated concrete formwork)
at a new build project in Wilmslow. All external walls were
constructed using an insulated quad-lock system. Onecomponent cementitious mortar - Mapetherm AR1 GG was
used to reinforce, bond and level the thermal-insulating

THE BOOK/EXTERNAL WORKS

EXTERNAL WORKS/THE BOOK

Good Exterior Landscaping Can Add Value To New Build Developments

Brett Landscaping is advising housebuilders to devote attention to the exterior
landscaping of new build developments in order to enhance the saleability of turnkey
projects. According to Andrew Gill, Marketing Manager at Brett Landscaping, dramatic
changes to the housing market since the major downturn in 2008 has made selling
properties far more demanding over the past few years. Even today, now that the market
is starting to show signs of a sustained recovery, it is still essential to present a new
property to best effect starting from when the prospective customer first approaches
the property.
No longer can developers rely on selling a property by simply adding an asphalt
driveway to the front and a lawn to the rear of a new property by way of landscaping, he
explains. Nowadays, homebuyers expect external spaces to be designed and installed
with the same care and attention to detail as interior spaces.
Research has shown that the average housebuyer takes around 20 minutes to decide if
a property is right for him, of which the first five minutes will often be spent looking
at the house from outside.
It would therefore be reasonable to suggest that the landscaping of a property is a
key part of their purchasing decision, helping to set the tone in a customers mind and
condition their subsequent viewing of the rest of the property, suggests Andrew Gill.
At the same time, todays busy lifestyles have increased the desire for turnkey properties
that owners can move into and enjoy immediately, rather than spending the next few
years redecorating to suit.
Given these changing conditions, there are significant economic benefits to investing in
a developments landscaping, but housebuilders are not always aware of the advantages.
According to Andrew Gill, historically, the budget set aside for landscaping is too often
seen as a buffer fund to absorb any cost overruns elsewhere on the build, so designs
get downgraded to suit. Whilst this can help with the overall project costs, we would
argue that it is a false economy in the longer term as properties can take longer to
64

ISSUE 2 2014

sell and buyers will look to offset the on-cost of having to upgrade the landscaping
against the amount they are willing to pay for the property. There is also the question
of surface water management to consider with local authorities starting to establish
an approval framework with regard to integrating Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS)
into new developments. This means that there are now functional as well as aesthetic
benefits to creating high-quality landscaping. Flood management technologies such
as permeable paving provide developers with increased scope in land usage at the
same time as improving the appearance of the site, at little if any additional cost,
explains Andrew Gill.
Brett Landscaping believes that for both aesthetic and functional reasons it is now high
time that the outside of a property received the same care and attention as the inside
within the development process.
Few housebuilders today would think of not fitting out a new property in a way that
shows it off to its best effect especially when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms. Yet
all too often we see identikit developments where the initial landscaping does nothing
to enhance the property. It seems ironic that, in recent years, some of the best examples
of new build hard landscaping have been seen within the social housing sector, Andrew
Gill adds.
In the private sector, by contrast, Brett Landscaping reports that it has seen many
examples where the initial hard landscaping on a new property is quickly removed and
replaced with higher specification product. This would appear to suggest that the new
homeowner is willing to pay more to get the look that they want, explains Andrew Gill.
It would therefore seem sensible to install it in the first instance thereby saving time,
money and materials and potentially increasing the initial sale price of the property
for the developer, Andrew Gill concludes. www.brettpaving.co.uk

Hauraton Surface Water Drainage Systems Installed

At The Whiteley Shopping Centre
Opened in May 2013 the Whiteley Shopping Centre, Fareham, Hampshire, has over 29,700
m of retail and leisure space, including a 5,500m Marks & Spencer and a 1,810m
Next outlet. Other retail outlets include H&M, Boots, JD Sports, Bank, Sports Direct,
Frankie & Bennys and Starbucks. Planned around a town square, it incorporating many
landscaped areas and numerous pieces of public
art. The 64million Shopping Centre was jointly
development and is now owned by British Land
Company PLC and Universities Superannuation
Scheme (U.S.S).
Located in southern Hampshire, the Centre is one
mile from junction 9 of the M27, midway between
the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton.
With the extensive use of natural materials, an
effective drainage scheme and the incorporation
of many energy efficient and sustainable features,
the Whiteley Shopping Centre has achieved a
BREEAM excellent rating.
Conceived by Architects Corstorphine+Wright as an open townscape, the Whiteley
Shopping Centre was build on levelled land that originally slopped down towards an
existing car park and petrol filling station. With extensive paved, concreted, resin
bonded aggregate and asphalted areas, surface water drainage was an important
consideration in the general landscaping of the site.
Aesthetic demands meant the surface water drainage for the paved square and its
radiating pedestrian walkways had to be as unobtrusive as possible yet fully meet the

drainage requirement. This was achieved by installing over 700metres of Hauraton

RECYFIX STANDARD 100 SLOTTED CHANNELS fitted with symmetrical stainless steel
covers. Once installed this system provides an unobtrusive, narrow line of slots in the
pavement surface.
The coloured resin bonded aggregate surface used for parking bays behind the shops
is drained by a RECYFIX PRO 100 channel run, fitted with FIBRETEC Class C250,
HEELSAFE gratings. RECYFIX PRO 200 channels fitted with G-TEC ductile iron Class D400
gratings were installed across the pedestrian access route to the bays. RECYFIX PLUS
100 channels with 6mm slot ductile iron Class D400 gratings were installed to drain rain
water away from the sides of buildings.
Additionally, just over 50 metres of FASERFIX KS 150 channels with 9mm slot ductile
iron Class E600 gratings were installed across many of the Centres access roads.
Approximately 300 metres of FASERFIX KS 200 channels with 20 mm slot ductile iron
Class E600 gratings were also used to drain the concrete service yards located behind the
shops. All the Hauraton channels systems were installed by groundwork sub-contractor
Euro City Group.
Andy Beirne, Hauratons Project Engineer comments; We worked closely with the main
contractor McLaren Construction to ensure the drainage systems specified were going to
be discreet, blended in well with the desired design effect and meet the loading Class
required. It was particularly pleasing our RECYFIX channels, made from 100% recycled
Polyethylene-Polypropylene (PE-PP) and the FASERFIX channels, made from Hauratons
ecological and sustainable Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC), were materials in keeping
with the sustainable aims of this development. www.hauraton.co.uk

Lanes Deploys KrasoSluice For No Dig Reline Of

Aerospace Servicing Site
Lanes Group engineers have
used one of their latest
no dig pipe rehabilitation
technologies to reline the
entire storm water drainage
system at an aerospace
service centre. They used
a KrasoSluice in a project
to rehabilitate a kilometre
of drain lines at United
Technologies Aerospace
Systems in Marston Green,
Birmingham. Lanes Groups
pollution control partner,
Aquasentry, also installed two
sophisticated interceptors to
prevent the accidental release
of pollutants into external water courses. The KrasoSluice
uses compressed air to invert, launch and inflate liners
up to 300mm in diameter and 200 metres in length. It
then delivers heated water, also under pressure, to hot
cure the liner. An Epros drain lining system was also
used, mostly on shorter run and smaller diameter pipes.
The Aquasentry interceptors monitor surface water at
the point it leaves the UTAS drainage system. If any one
of a range of chemicals are detected, they close valves,
preventing the pollutants from being discharged into
water courses. www.lanesfordrains.co.uk

Sika Supply Grout Plug To Greenwich Square Development

Sika Limited supplied 100 tonnes of Spinor A12 micro-fine cement
grout, which was a key ingredient in forming a grout plug to reduce the
permeability of the ground at the new Greenwich Square development.
It was first necessary to control the groundwater prevalent in the
mixture of clay and chalk. The solution was to construct a grout plug
to significantly reduce the permeability of the ground in the basement
area. Spinor A12 micro-fine cement grout was injected to form a
capping layer at the top of the plug. Spinor A12, which has excellent
injectability and durability, penetrated into the grout zone, permeating
the fissures in the substrate to form the plug. A sandwich was formed
by then injecting sodium silicate to form the lower level of the grout
plug. www.sikaconcreteadmixtures.co.uk

ITV News Item Demonstrates The Porosity Of Resin Bound Surfacing

Following the recent floods throughout
Britain, Lawrence McGinty the Science and

Innovation Park to report on things that can
be done now to prevent flooding.
He demonstrated the porosity of the SuDS
compliant resin bound surfacing (RonaDeck
Resin Bound Surfacing) by pouring a bucket of
water onto the surface, where it immediately soaked through the system into the earth.
This is what he had to say it is amazing stuff, when you pour water on it, as I did, it just, as if by
magic it just soaks through straight away into the ground underneath, not into the drains, not into
the rivers and not falling, adding to the flood waters. www.ronacrete.co.uk

Ancon Extends Its Range Of

Insulated Balcony Connectors
Construction fixings specialist, ANCON, has extended its existing balcony connector
range to include three new thermally insulated systems designed to minimise the effects
of cold bridging at concrete to concrete, concrete to steel and steel to steel interfaces.

Osmo Keeps Your Exterior Golden

Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert has extended
its exterior wood finishes range with the introduction of Cedar UVProtection-Oil. The finish has been specially designed to protect
the wood and provide a warm golden brown cedar tone, a look
which is sought after by many. Cedar UV-Protection-Oil delays the
greying process by shielding the wood against harmful UV rays,
and algae and fungal decay. Not only does Cedar UV-ProtectionOil rejuvenate tired looking wood, but it provides an attractive
Cedar finish.
Based on natural vegetable oils, Cedar UV-Protection-Oil
penetrates deep into the wood ensuring that it remains elastic and
healthy. Particularly suitable for cladding, garden houses, fences,
windows and doors, it provides a satin-matt, finish that not only
protects the wood surface it can also enhance the natural look
of the cedar. Cedar UV-Protection-Oil has a UV-Protection factor
of 12 which protects the wood whilst allowing the woods natural
characteristics to remain. The range also includes UV-ProtectionOil Clear and Oak UV-Protection-Oil. www.osmouk.com

The cold bridge formed by direct-fix balconies or where a continuous reinforced concrete
slab is used can seriously affect a buildings thermal performance and lead to problems
with condensation and mould growth. The new Ancon systems, called Isotec, STC and
STS, are designed to provide an effective thermal break whilst maintaining full structural
integrity by transferring moment, shear, tension and compression forces at the joint.
Comprising stainless steel reinforcement and mineral wool insulation, the new high
performance Ancon Isotec system provides maximum corrosion protection and integral
fire resistance. It is suitable for low energy concrete to concrete applications, including
heavily congested or stepped floor slabs.
For steel balconies, the new range provides solutions for both concrete and steel
structures where Ancons fabricated structural steel components are CE-marked,
demonstrating legal compliance, design to EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) and manufacture at
facilities externally audited by an approved body.
The Ancon STC (Steel to Concrete) system is a two-part assembly, comprising a castin anchorage and a post fixed bracket with integral thermal pad, reducing the risk
of damage to the units on site during the construction process. For steel to steel
applications, the Ancon STS system is a single, compact, easy to handle unit wrapped
in thermally efficient polystyrene insulation. Both systems are manufactured to order
by Ancon at its UK production facilities and provide the flexibility in design to suit the
exact requirements of the balcony and eliminate clashes with cladding.

Ancon Marketing Manager, Annabelle Wilson, says, We have extended our connector
range as balconies are an increasingly popular feature in the residential sector, where
designers are keen to add style and aesthetic appeal to high density occupancies.
Energy efficient construction is a key focus for our in-house product development team.
In addition to these new insulated connectors, Ancon has recently extended its award
winning range of low thermal conductivity wall ties and introduced an innovative helical
fixing for insulated plasterboard.
Details of the full Ancon range of balcony connectors, including the established Isolan
system, used successfully throughout Europe for many years, are included in the new 32page technical brochure Thermally Insulated Balcony Connectors for the Construction
Industry, available to download from www.ancon.co.uk or in hard copy on request.

London Bridge station, the capitals oldest railway terminus, presented a major
bottleneck through lack of capacity either to increase train frequency or service
longer trains. Three different operating companies use it with six lines continuing
to Cannon Street, Charing Cross and Blackfriars. Of 86 trains each hour only one
Thameslink train could be accommodated in the face of demand for 18.
A new 400 metre viaduct and 1,080-tonne, 70-metre bridge over Borough High
Street was therefore built to address the congestion issue. Described by architects
Jestico and Whiles as an iconic structure, its distinctive appearance is provided by
2200m2 of VMZINC curved cassette panel facades in pre-weathered QUARTZ-ZINC.
The material was fabricated by EDM Spanwall and installed by specialist architectural
metalwork and faade contractor the McGrath Group. The material will retain
its appearance for years to come and in doing so requires minimal cleaning and
maintenance.
In addition to construction of the viaduct work also included demolition of existing
buildings, temporary relocation of Borough Market to adjacent land and removal,
refurbishment and reconstruction of the existing cast iron market structure.

A Fila surface care regime has been specified for the new, award-winning Library
of Birmingham and adjoining Repertory Theatre. The 189m library - which has a
BREEAM-excellent rating - is the largest public building of its kind in Europe. FILA
Cleaner and LEED-compliant FILAW68 were specified for the initial wash, sealing and
maintenance of over 1,800m2 of Brazilian Slate, installed throughout the ground floor
circulation areas by W B Simpson & Sons (MIDLANDS) Ltd for main contractor, Carillion.
Designed by Delft-based architects, Mecanoo, The Library of Birmingham is a hightech architectural structure spread over ten levels and situated in Centenary Square,
on the west side of the City.It houses a collection of one million books - including
Shakespeares First Folio - and since, opening on 3 September 2013, has already
welcomed over 1.5 million visitors. Externally, the library comprises a series of glazed
box shaped structures clad in a delicate metal filigree, arranged over a glazed ground
floor and topped by a rotunda housing the historic Shakespeare Memorial Room.
Internally, circular voids lined with books provide a sight line to the very top of the
building and, on the ground floor, the Library and Repertory Theatre adjoin.

Four Brazilian Slate tile formats were specified and fixed, by W B Simpson & Sons
(MIDLAND) Ltd, in a traditional Romaans Verband pattern. After installation, FILA
Cleaner was used to carry out an initial wash. The surface was then treated with
FILAW68; a water-based stain-proofing protector, which is designed for internal and

The Giants Causeways new Visitor Centre is an architecturally

stunning and sustainable building, BREEAM rated Excellent, thanks
to a number of strategies; including a water conservation and recovery
system that features pipework and cisterns provided by Geberit.
In the buildings extensive bathrooms, Geberit Mapress Carbon
pressed pipework and Geberit Mepla multi-layer pipework link to
the water saving Geberit Duofix dual flush cisterns and sleek Geberit
Sigma50 flush plates.
The Geberit Duofix frames and cisterns are hidden in the wall help
maintain a clean and aesthetically pleasing finish for this ultraminimalist building. In the Giants Causeway Visitor Centre caf,
Geberit Mapress Stainless Steel is also used where pipework is
exposed.
Attracting 500,000 to 700,000 visitors a year, the National Trust
owned centre was built following a fire and the general need to
expand. External renewable technologies were not conducive with
the buildings minimalistic appearance so, in addition to water
conservation, its sustainable credentials have been achieved through
ventilation, high levels of thermal mass and a Ground Source Heat
Pump.
The Giants Causeway brings together a number of Geberits plumbing
solutions, chosen due to their longevity - a key consideration in such
a sustainable building - quality and cost-effectiveness: not only are
Geberit Mapress and Geberit Mepla price competitive products, their
ease of installation minimises time on site, cutting man hours.

Title: VIVIX Exterior Facade Panels Are A Soaring Success At Kristiansand Airport
Location: Norway
Application: Exterior Faade Panels
Visit: www.formica.com

For the creation of an acoustically designed live recording studio in an old Victorian
building in Edinburgh, a continuous brilliant white flooring system was required
throughout the entire ground floor. Meeting the stringent acoustic, aesthetic and
durability requirements, ComfortFloor Pro a seamless, liquid applied flooring system
from Sika fitted the bill perfectly.
Due to the nature of the building and its end-use, the solution had to be sleek, modern
and 'acoustically beneficial', while providing a seamless floor which straddled varied
substrates including concrete and timber. And in order to minimise vibrations and
enhance acoustic performance, an innovative jacked-up concrete floor slab was used to
isolate the studio from the rest of the building prior to the application of the flooring
materials.
With the initial brief only thought possible by applying a sheet material, the successful
application ofa pure white Sika Comfortfloor Pro by specialist contractor Industrial
Floor Treatments (IFT) not only met the demands of this niche project, but also
exceeded them, allowing the designers a minimalist and no-fuss vision of the space to
be brought to life.
It was also imperative that the chosen material had minimal VOCs, due to the large number of other trades involved in the installation. The use of SikafloorComfort Regupol, a polyurethane rebound foam shockpad, offered further noise suppression and absorbency prior to the application of the final coats. This
had to be cut to fit throughout the various rooms of the ground floor. With sustainability key to any building project, Sikas ComfortFloor systems are extremely
tough and durable and can have a life expectancy to match and potentially exceed more traditional sheet applied floor finishes.

VIVIX exterior faade panels were installed at the new

control tower for Kristiansand Airport, in Kjevik, Norway.
Located in the southern part of Norway, the airport serves
the Agder district with domestic and international flights.
To clad the control tower, Archus Architects and Wiig og
Horgmo Architects chose VIVIX panels in Storm, a deep
charcoal grey.
The control towers egg-inspired shape dictated the choice
of material which needed to be curved in order to create this
unique design. VIVIX panels are the ideal solution for this
project. The panels are easily machined and can be cut into
a variety of shapes and sizes. The control towers are at least
30 meters above ground; the material we used for cladding
had to be lightweight for ease of installation and safety as
well as versatile and flexible to allow us to realize the design
concept, comments Roald Bakke of Wiig og Horgmo.
Developed in consultation with leading architects and colour
consultants, VIVIX offers a fresh perspective in architectural
panels. VIVIX panels are available in plain colours with
sophisticated neutrals and striking accents, nature-inspired
abstract patterns and rich woodgrains, allowing to clad
a building, create individual design features or to use in
combination with other cladding materials.

Both the teams at Avinor and Archus have had previous

experience with using Formica laminate for their projects,
including another control tower in Honningsvag and all the
Statoil stations," comments Tor Henrik Smme of Archus.
"VIVIX panels proved ideal thanks to the colour choice,
versatility, durability and quality offered." VIVIX panels are
not only decorative and give architects an opportunity to
accentuate elements and features, creating a statement in
the landscape; they are also practical, functional and can
contribute to how the building as a whole performs.

Location: Berkshire
Application: home automation system
Visit: www.knxuk.org

A KNX home automation system designed and installed by KNX UK Association

members International Lighting Solutions (ILS) and Bespoke Automation,
is central to the conversion of an historic building into a prestigious high
end residential property. The Astor is the last of seven restored barns that
originally formed part of the Model Farm built by Lord Astor of the Cliveden
Estate, Berkshire. It has been transformed into the highest specification
contemporary living space whilst retaining much of its history, including the
internal framework of the original structural and roof timbers.
Developer Trenac Estates called upon ILS to design a home automation system
for The Astor. The system needed to be simple to use and the user interfaces
had to be not only of the highest specification, but also had to harmonise
aesthetically with the property's contemporary interior design, styling and
fittings.
The Astor includes 140 lighting circuits, fifteen independent underfloor heating
zones and four groups of lantern windows that needed to be controlled. To
overcome these challenges and integrate all the home automation functions,
a KNX based home automation system was recommended with specialist KNX
integrator Bespoke Automation appointed to install the system, capitalising on
their vast experience of using KNX for this type of project.
ILS recommended the robust and proven Berker B.iq wall switches and room
controllers to provide individual zone control of the underfloor heating. A KNX
weather station on the roof supplies rain, wind, temperature and brightness
data which is also displayed on a B.iq touch screen. The recorded rain and wind
values are used to manage the opening and closing of the lantern windows in
the roof of the building.

A Winning Performance In The Golden Mile

Great West House, Brentford
Forming part of what is known as Brentfords Golden Mile business area; Great West House with its L-plan design is an iconic
1960s tower.
Dominating the skyline from the elevated M4, Great West House provides office accommodation for a number of blue-chip
British and world-wide organisations, including BSkyB, Page One Communications and Air India. Known as GW1 and GW2 the
paired buildings are owned by commercial property investment company CLS Holdings plc and operated by Instant Office Ltd
as a Business Centre providing fully furnished office suites, conference rooms, catering and leisure facilities.
An extensive programme of refurbishment and upgrade has ensured that the buildings provide contemporary accommodation
to a high standard. However with energy performance now
assuming greater importance for building owners and managers
the original metal windows are also being enhanced to improve
standards of thermal insulation and comfort. The chosen solution
is Selectaglazes bespoke Secondary Glazing with high performance
seals which reduces heat loss by more than 50% and minimises
air leakage. Comfort is improved and energy demand reduced. The
secondary windows are fully fabricated off-site allowing rapid
installation and minimal disruption to the day to day business of
the building.
Thermography tests conducted by Thermascan clearly demonstrate
that floors with secondary glazing perform considerably better
than those with original glazing. Secondary glazing also offers
significant noise insulation, typically a 45dB reduction, and is
extensively used to combat traffic and aircraft noise in offices,
hotels and residential areas. Effective security can also be achieved
using locks and strengthened glass.

Thermographic imagery demonstrates the effectiveness of secondary glazing within this 1960s office block.
Ar1 denotes the area treated with secondary glazing, showing minimum heat loss. Ar2 demonstrates the untreated area.

Selectaglaze, founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant holder since 2004 is the UKs leading designer, manufacturer and installer of

Lindapter Hollo-Bolts Used On New Stonehenge Visitor Centre

Lindapters High Clamping Force (HCF) Hollo-Bolt was used to connect structural glass
fins to the primary steelwork of the new Stonehenge Visitor Centre. The fins in turn
support the walls of the glass box structure; one of the centres two pods, covered by
an undulating roof supported by 211 steel beams.
A range of size M16 and M20 Hollo-Bolts were specified by the Designers & Engineers of
the structural glazing, Vitrine Systems, to connect the glass fins to the RHS perimeter
ring beams supporting the transparent glass
panels that formed the exterior of the pod
housing the Visitor Centres caf and shop. The
Hollo-Bolt connections comfortably fulfilled
all load requirements, which ranged from
20kN to 30kN depending on the connection
location.
The discreet and easy to install Hollo-Bolt
provided the ideal connection method for this
project where on-site access limitations posed a potential problem. The closed RHS steel made Hollo-Bolts the preferred connection
method as they offered a reliable and high strength connection with independently approved safe working loads that could be installed
using just handtools; a range of benefits that could not be matched by any alternative connection method. The 27 million Stonehenge
Visitors Centre development was completed on time and on budget and opened to visitors in December 2013. The completed structure
provides a striking gateway to the monument site for the 900,000 people who visit Stonehenge each year.

mechanism. To learn more about the Hollo-Bolt product range and how the HCF mechanism works visit www.hollo-bolt.com

Howe Green Floor Boxes For Better Safety And Lower Electricity Bills
It is a common scene these days in coffee shops, airport terminals and hotel foyers around the world; people on their laptops with a power cord stretched out dangerously to the
nearest outlet. Everyone wants to be fully charged it seems and often with no regard to the safety implications or costs involved. UK access cover manufacturer Howe Green has
designed a bespoke floor box solution to help prevent people plugging in where they shouldnt and to help reduce the risk of unwanted trip hazards in public spaces.
The discreet stainless steel floor boxes were originally developed for the public lounge of the Hilton Hotel at Tower Bridge. Howe Green were tasked with replacing the original
floor boxes, which were damaged and in poor condition. As well as being unsightly, some posed potentially serious trip hazards with lids and cable outlets not sitting flush with
the surrounding floor. In several cases, removable box lids had been lifted by members of the public seeking power to charge laptops and mobile devices. Often, the hotels own
lamps and equipment had been unplugged in the process, leaving trailing cables across the floor.
Howe Greens floor boxes were the ideal solution for highly trafficked public areas such hotels, leisure centres, libraries, airports, restaurants and cafs. They have a discreet design
with minimal show edge and a series of discreet cable outlets. Most importantly, they are lockable, making them more tamper proof for increased security and safety. Suitable for
all floor finishes, the stainless steel floor boxes will accept an insert to matching their surround for a perfectly flush and uninterrupted floor finish.
