This booklet provides a wide range of information about government, schools and services in Shawano, Menominee and Oconto counties the Wolf River Region.

Emergency Numbers

Paying Property Taxes

Area residents should call 911 in case of any emergency,


whether it be for an ambulance, fire or police. Dispatch centers
will notify the proper authorities.

Your local government will send you a tax bill in December.


Property owners have two options to pay.
If you pay all at once, the taxes are due Jan. 31 to the local
government.
City of Shawano residents can choose to pay installments, either two or three.
The first installment is due Jan. 31, the second is due April 30
and the third is due July 31.
Shawano County residents may make two installments, with
the first due Jan. 31 to the local government, and the second July
31 to the county treasurer.
Menominee County residents may make their installments,
with the first due Jan. 31 and the second July 31 to the county
treasurer.
Oconto County residents may make two installments, with the
first due Jan. 31 to the local government, and the second July 31
to the county treasurer.

Shawano City Government


Shawano has a mayor and six alderpersons on the Common
Council. The council members represent various portions of the
city.
Each district, which comprises two wards, also correspond to
the districts of the six Shawano County supervisors who represent
the city on the County Board.

Shawano County

The Shawano County Sheriffs Departments mission statement pledges to maintain a safe and orderly environment for
people of Shawano County through law enforcement and crime
prevention activities delivered in a timely, professional and courteous manner.
In addition to its patrol squad cars, the department provides
a water safety patrol, snowmobile law enforcement, school/community liaison officers, ATV law enforcement, a K-9 unit and deputies on the Stockbridge-Munsee Indian Reservation.
The department also offers an Explorer program for those

between the ages of 14 and 20 who are interested in learning


about law enforcement. The program starts in November and
runs through the end of the school year.
The sheriff-elect is Adam Bieber. Incumbent Sheriff Randall
Wright will finish out his term in January 2015. The chief deputy is
John Gutho and the captain is Tom Tuma.

Oconto County

The mission of the Oconto County Sheriffs Department is to


improve the quality of life of all citizens and provide for a safe
community by reducing crime and preventing public disorder. We
believe it is our responsibility to protect the constitutional rights
of all persons. Our department will work in partnership with the
communities to identify and address the issues that are of concern. The Oconto County Sheriffs Department will strive to maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism

water testing, radon testing, lead testing, fluoride program, health
checks, WIC (Women Infants & Children), school health, MCH
(maternal child health), flu shots, communicable diseases, prenatal care coordination.
The Menominee County Health Department is located in the
Menominee County Health and Human Services Building in Keshena. Call 715-799-3861. Services offered include radon testing,
preparedness and prevention services, and communicable disease investigations.
The Oconto County Health and Human Services department
is in the Oconto County Courthouse. Call 920-834-7000. Services
offered include water testing, lead testing, WIC (Women Infants &
Children), flu shots, communicable diseases, tobacco program,
Wisconsin well woman program, preparedness coordination,
child passenger safety, school vision and hearing screenings, infant massage, senior safety program, environmental health concerns and birth to age 3 program.

220 E. Division St., which offers a weight room, a variety of exercise equipment, pool and racquetball courts. Memberships can be
purchased at the high school or recreation department that cost
half the regular price. Both facilities are open at different times each
day for public use. Call for more information.
Mohican Family Center, N8605 Oak St., Bowler, 715-7934080. The membership facility offers a gymnasium, treadmills, free
weights, group classes and personal training.
Menominee Recreation Department, W2776 Chief Little Wave
Road, Keshena, 715-799-5158. The facility offers a fitness room
with treadmills and free weights, and a youth activity room.
Darwin E. Smith Community Aquatic Center, 400 W. Grand
Ave., Wittenberg, 715-253-2255. The facility offers a pool with a
1-meter diving board, with specific times for lap swimming and
open swimming. Water aerobics and swim lessons are also offered.
Theres also with a fountain and water slide, a fitness center with
aerobic equipment free weights and machine weights, as well as a
hot tub. An all-purpose party room is available for rental.
Clintonville High School Recreation Center, 330 N. Harriet St.,
Clintonville, 715-823-7215, ext. 2279. The center includes a fitness
center with cardio equipment, free weights and weight machines,
a large eight-lane pool that is 3.5 to 10 feet deep and a second
pool that is 6 inches to 4.5 feet deep, both heated, a whirlpool, a
community gym with six basketball hoops and a community room.
Open to public with day passes, monthly and semi-annual and annual memberships available.

Fitness Center open to community with a one-year membership
program, punch card (25 uses) or one-time visits. It is open from
5-7:50 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 3:30-8:30 p.m. Monday
through Thursday.
Gillett Secondary School, 208 W. Main St., 920-855-1502. Fitness Center open to the community from 6-8 p.m. Monday through
Thursday when school is in session. Free for district residents.
Bellin Health Bond Community Center, 1201 Park Ave., Oconto, 920-834-5585. The Bond Community Center offers a number
of services including free orientations; strength training and cardiovascular equipment, a swimming pool, swim lessons, whirlpool,
group fitness classes, cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, specialty classes and recreational leagues.

Swimming pools

There are numerous indoor and outdoor swimming facilities in


the region:
The pool at Shawano Community High School offers open
swim water aerobics and swimming lessons. The number is 715526-2175, ext. 1307, or call the SCE office, 715-526-2192, ext. 3102.

The Darwin E. Smith Aquatic Center in Wittenberg is adjacent


to Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School. It includes a water slide.

The Shawano Recreation Center pool, 220 E. Division St., is offers a public indoor pool. It also offers open and lap swimming. Call
715-526-6171.
Clintonville operates a municipal outdoor swimming pool at Bucholtz Park. The pool has three diving boards and a separate wading
pool. The pool is open June through August. A wading pool is also
available. Approximately 125-150 people take swim lessons each
year. The Clintonville Municipal Swimming Pool generally opens the
Saturday after school is out. Regular swim hours are 1:30 to 4:30
p.m. and 5:30 to 8 p.m. daily. A fee is charged. Call 715-823-7663.

The Shawano Athletic Memorial Park wading pool is available
for lap swimming from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and for young children from
1-2:30 p.m. (depending on the weather) after school until Labor Day.
