Employers inding it tough

to attract graduates with
the right kind of skills
NEARLY half of employers
had unfilled graduate posts
last year after struggling to
find people with the right
skills and being left in the
lurch by students backing
out on offers, research suggests.
Information technology
and telecoms firms faced
the most problems, with
almost one in eight positions
remaining empty.
Overall, the number of
graduate vacancies available
increased by 4.3 per cent in
2013/14.
Employers estimated to
have collectively offered a
total of 21,682 jobs, which is
according to the latest Association of Graduate Recruiters survey.
Amid the rise in openings,
44.8 per cent of firms were
left with unfilled vacancies

In a forward to the report,
AGR chief Stephen Isherwood said: Difficulties in
attracting the right talent
with the right mix of skills
in the right location are on
the increase.
Not since 2008 has the
problem been so pronounced.
IT and telecoms companies
had the largest proportion
of unfilled vacancies at 11.8
per cent followed by energy,
water or utility firms at 11.1
per cent. Some employers
reported unfilled positions
due to students reneging on
job offers, the survey says.
The overall turn down
rate the proportion of
graduates that did not accept
a position offered to them
was 14.4 per cent.

Several employers told

researchers that their turn
down rates had been higher
than expected this year.
One said they had seen an
increase in offers that were
declined by graduates quite
late in the recruitment cycle while another said that
it seems graduates are holding a couple of offers and
deciding late in the cycle.
The latest survey does
show that competition remains for jobs, especially in
some industries.
In general, employers
received 74.5 applications for
every opening.
But fast-moving consumer
goods companies, such as
those selling soft drinks,
toiletries or toys, had 146.4
applications for every job
while banking and financial
services firms had 107.3.

More than a quarter (26.5

per cent) of roles in 2013/14
were taken by graduates who
had previously worked for
the employers, often through
an internship or work placement.
Mr Isherwood said: The
importance of work experience cannot be stressed to
students enough.
Candidates that understand the world of work,
understand their own skills
and can translate that into a
compelling proposition for
employers are much more
likely to be successful in the
jobs market.
Employers are predicting
an 11.9 per cent increase
in graduate vacancies in
2014/15, the report says,
with big rises expected in IT
and telecoms and the public
sector.

Creatively experienced in the use of InDesign, typical

candidates will need to be able to design feature and page
layouts that enhance the editorial and commercial content
supplied. Working to tight deadlines and as part of a team,
this is a great opportunity to gain commercial experience in
a creative environment.

Like putting a highly sophisticated jigsaw together, the

planning team are the creators of every newspaper we
produce. Attention to detail, being able to work to tight
deadlines and being able to interpret the instructions of
others are all requirements of the job as is a an ability
to think creatively and make our newspapers look good.

you will have experience of working in an administration or
customer service role.

Sales Support Administrator

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Sales Support Administrator
working as part of the Advertising team.
The role will involve processing advertisement bookings, advertising copy,
delivering excellent customer service over the telephone, supporting the sales
team in their day to day activity, along with a number of other
ofice-based duties.
The hours of work are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm.
The successful applicant will be a conident, effective verbal and written
communicator and will have excellent organisational and IT skills and
experience of using Microsoft Ofice, as well as some knowledge of social
media platforms.
You will have a keen eye for detail, be able to work to speciic/strict deadlines
and you must ensure you are able to manage and prioritise your workload.
