topping her to-do list: buy a baby capsule for
the car. The woman hadnt gotten back to me
and I was like, Oh, it will be fine, Ill just sort
it out on Monday, Erin (who has officially
changed her surname to Gleave) tells WHO.
But baby had other plans. At 7 AM the
next day the 32-year-old models waters broke,
and by 10 AM her contractions had started.
After spending the day at the Brisbane home
of her parents, Lin and Andy, alongside singersongwriter husband Elliot Gleave (aka Example),
she went to hospital at 11 PM. Three hours
later, on Dec. 21, Evander Maxwell Gleave
was born. I actually caught him and brought
him straight up to my chest, so that was a
really special moment, the smitten new mum
recalls. And then a minute later I was like,
Oh! We dont even know what it is! and I
pulled him away from me and looked at him
for the first time and went, Its a boy!
Having achieved her goal of a drug-free,
midwife-assisted birth, Erin left hospital
just a few hours later at 6 AM. I was like,
We dont even have a car seat, so my brother
picked me up from hospital, because hes got
two little girls, so in the end it was all fine.
Now settling into their new life as a family
of three, Erin and Elliot, 32, are relishing
getting to know their son. Hes an absolute
gutsall he wants to do is feed all the time,
but considering hes got me and Elliot for
parents, its not surprising, the Canberra-born
model says with a grin. With his dusting of
dark hair, Evander definitely looks a lot like
Elliot, she says, but I think he has my
eyes. The London-based couple are spending time with Erins mum and dad in Brisbane
and Elliots parents, Mike and Elaine, in
Sanctuary Cove before they head back to the
UK in March, so weve got doting grandparents on hand no matter where we are.
But the most amazing support, says Erin,
has come from her husband of 20 months.
Elliots incredible, she says. When I get up in
the night-time Ill feed Van and then Elliot will
quite often cuddle him and get him back to
sleep. Elliots got a bit of a baby-whisperer thing
going on! And Elliot is just as in awe of his
wife: Watching Erin go through pregnancy,
birth and now motherhood in the most natural
way possible has been inspiring. Inspiring more
babies, perhaps? Oh God, I want another one
already! says Erin, laughing. Ideally I want
three, but Ill just focus on the one for now.

Maryland, high-school
student Hae Min Lee, 18,
disappeared. A month later, a
passerby found her body in a
shallow grave in a local park.
Reports say she was strangled to
death. And within a month, Haes
ex-boyfriend, honours student Adnan Syed, then
18, was charged with her murder. He was convicted
and sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.
Solely because of hurt pride, he chose to kill,
assistant states attorney Kevin Urick told the
judge at the time. But 16 years later, the 12-part
podcast phenomenon Serial has turned what
once seemed like an open-and-shut case into
an international obsession.
The show, which debuted in October, garnered
1.5 million listeners and has been downloaded
more than 5 million times on iTunes. The shows
host, Sarah Koenig, spent more than a year
reporting on the case, analysing testimony, interviewing witnesses, dissecting details and raising
new questions about Adnans guilt. For me, it
was like the police were sweeping everything
under the carpet, and Sarah went and took out
everything, says Adnans mother, Shamim

anothers lives. When I hear the cast
of Friends talk about missing each
other every day and going on vacation
together, I think: That will be us, says creator and
star Lena Dunham, who joined co-stars Allison
Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet on

New Yorks Brooklyn.
These days, its rare for all four women to be in
the same room. Girls fourth season premiered in
Australia on Jan.12 (Mondays at 7.30PM on
Showcase) with its heroines all over the place:
Hannah (Dunham) is in Iowa for graduate school,
Marnie (Williams) is still trying to launch her music
career, Shoshanna (Mamet) is heading into the
workforce and Jessa (Kirke) is still at a loose end.
With pasta and wine on the table, the
conversation between the four women has the
same wit, warmth and raunch that have allowed
the show to strike such a Zeitgeistian chord.

Lena Dunham It was better than Jemimas.

Dunham I bought it on iTunes. Allison did
this smart thingshe prepared everyone, like,
I know you hate-watched [The Sound of
Music]. As a result you got ahead of it, and
Twitters cynicism was pretty silent.
Williams I was in such a bubble. Ive never been
so invested in something. For only three hours
of my life, everything needed to go right. It was
so f--king complicated with the flying. I flew
into Christopher Walken a week before.
Is musical theatre something you want
to keep doing?
Williams Id love to. Im doing an American
Songbook concert at Lincoln Center in March.
Zosia Mamet Oh, my God, thats so exciting!
Why havent you told me this?

Williams I cannot wait for this.
Kirke Whats workshopping?
Mamet You do it for a month and rehearse like
youre putting on a play. Its for investors to
figure out how much the play is going to cost,
figuring out the kinks.
Dunham This is a really big deal. And not to
brag, but Jemima had two art shows this year,
and you have not made a painting that hasnt
sold out before it was finished.

Zadie Smith. God, she was so intimidating.
Dunham You were a star.
Speaking of stars, has Adam Driver [who plays
Adam Sackler on Girls] told you anything at all
about his role in Star Wars?
Mamet/Williams/Dunham Nooooo.
Williams Ive tried everything. Im the biggest
Star Wars fan! I feel like Im a bigger fan than he
is. Nothing! Its so frustrating. He wont even say
if hes playing a good guy or a bad guy.
Kirke Obviously he is the villain. Come on, guys.

Williams I asked him if he was real
or CGI.
Dunham I asked him if his costume
was heavy and he was like, I cant
tell you that.
This fourth season begins with all
of your characters in very different
places emotionally andin the
case of Hannahphysically. Lena,
was there an overarching theme
you wanted to convey this season?
Dunham Something I thought about
a lot was how when youre in your
20s, theres a feeling of When I
decide to be an adult, this will all
work out. People start making
good choices: they get a job, they
figure out how to graduate, they get
sober. But just making the good
choice isnt enough to save you.
I remember I was living with my
parents when I realised that even
if I wash the dishes and dont steal
alcohol from my mother and dont
ignore my friends when they call
me for a week and a half, life is
still really hard.
With four seasons under your belt,
do you guys feel like you know
your characters more intimately?
Mamet Yes and no. Part of me
knows [Shoshanna] intrinsically
because weve got this amazing
platform to play characters who are
allowed to grow. I dont know her in
the way she doesnt know herself yet.
Kirke Im still trying to figure it out. When
someone asks me who my character is, its hard
to answer. I dont really have a formula for who
she is.
Dunham I always felt like Jessa was the Tracy
Jordan of Girls. Like, you know how on
30 Rock Tracy Morgan could say a really smart
math theorem, but then ask what a sandwich is?
Kirke Youve actually given me this Tracy
Morgan reference before. It helped.
Dunham Weve always joked that Jessas the
person who would start speaking fluent Chinese,
but didnt know what Facebook or a text
message was. This season we really start to figure
out who Jessa is, and where her vulnerabilities
come from.
Do you find it strange or amusing when
people tell you they identify as a Marnie
or a Shoshanna?
Williams Thats a compliment. But its also a
simplification, and things change over time. If you
stopped watching after Season 1, youd have a

the Marnie-ness that kind of haunts them.
Dunham Judd Apatow once said Marnie is like
CharlotteYou know, the normal one. I love
Sex and the City and those characters, but
Charlotte was not normal. [Turns to Kirke]
People tried to say that you were the Samantha.
Kirke Ive had one sex scene. How could I be
the Samantha?
Dunham Shes got a big sex scene in Episode 9.
Its a very sexy scene, and the spoiler that Ill
give you is that her sneakers are on. Shes
wearing Keds and a bra, and shes naked besides
that. Someone said it was weird to watch
because it was sexy.
Kirke [Points to Dunham] She wouldnt watch
it! [The director] said, Theyre squirming in
their seats. Its so lame. Why couldnt you
watch it?
Dunham Because it made me nervous!
Kirke But I have to watch you having sex all the
f--king time!
Dunham But I have shitty, awkward sex. You
dont watch me look genuinely aroused.
Williams The funniest thing to me is how much
sex I have on the show and how little I wear
that amount of sex as a person. People wash
it off of me or something and are like, Oh,
youve never seen a penis in real life. And
I have so many sex scenes!

be incredibly awkward to film in
general.
Kirke [to Dunham] You wont show
pubic hair. Its very weird. I dont see
it as different. Nude is nude is nude.
Dunham I wont show my pubic hair.
Rebel Wilson made a joke about this on the
MTV Movie Awards, something like Ive seen
Lena Dunhams vagina more than Ben Afflecks
beard. Ive never shown my vagina! Thats my
thin red line.
Williams Do you know why?

Dunham I think because for me boobs and butts

feel comic, and vagina feels intimate and
specific. If I was going to do it, Id want to do
it in a sexy French film or something.
Theres a lot of guest stars this season,
including Jason Ritter, Anthony
Edwards, Gillian Jacobs and
Spike Jonze. Any chance of us
seeing your pal Taylor Swift
make an appearance?
Dunham That would be the
greatest thing of all time. Shes
a little busy taking over the
Lena Dunham world right now.
Is there a chance this show could turn into
Women and be about all of you in your
30s and 40s?
Dunham I had this attitude at the start, like,
I want to be like British TV and know when
its time to stop and leave people wanting more.
Now Im like, I love these characters. I love
watching them grow. We have so much
freedom. And Ill never have a better job.
Williams Its a pleasure and a privilege. Also, I feel
like the film business is in such a weird growing
pain...Im fine being, like, you guys figure that
out and well keep doing this dream job.
Mamet Were essentially doing what they used
to do in the heyday. Were making a very long
movie every year.
Dunham I dont think Ive told you guys this.
I used to have this idea that after Girls my adult
life would start. And my adult life is happening!

But the feeling of loss is there every day
particularly in the morning when
whe I first wake
up. And at night, when the hou

Im just there with the dogs.

Just 2 months have passed since 29-year-old

Brittany Maynarddiagnosed with a terminal
brain tumour last Januarytook a fatal dose of
the sedative secobarbital prescribed by a doctor
and ended her life on Nov. 1 in Portland, Oregon,
under that states Death with Dignity law. In
going public with her controversial choice in a
series of emotional videos released last year by
the advocacy group Compassion & Choices,
Maynard became the unexpected face of the
right-to-die movement. Now, Diaz, a stoic,
private man who only shows emotion when he
talks about his late wife, is taking up her cause
(thebrittanyfund.org), starting with a Death
with Dignity bill expected to be introduced in
Maynards home state of California late this
month. My preference would be not to be in
front of any cameras, says Diaz, who is on

leave from his job as a manager in the food

industry. But this was one thing Brittany had
asked, that we make this a reality in California.
I want to keep my promise to her. His involvement is crucial, says Barbara Coombs Lee,
president of Compassion & Choices, with whom
he is partnering. Dan is Brittanys legacy made
visible. We couldnt do it without him.
Maynards galvanising effect on the end-oflife movement has energised opponents as well.
Generally, people who die under assistedsuicide laws are not confident, self-assured
young women confronting intractable pain,
says Richard Doerflinger of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops. They are
usually elderly and feel they are a burden
to others. The inevitable result of
legalisation is to increase pressure to act

relatives and accountants who may feel they
have become difficult or unproductive. This
agenda has no place in a society that cares
about its most vulnerable members.
The emotional debate didnt hit home for
Diaz when his wife of two years was initially
diagnosed. Hopeful they could find a treatment, they scoured medical
journals and the internet. Coming
across Oregons Death with
Dignity law, Maynard casually
mentioned, Look, if things get
bad, this is an option, Diaz
recalls. Only after a new MRI
revealed the tumour was growing
much faster than expectedcausing doctors
to revise Maynards prognosis to a dire six
monthsdid she begin to discuss ending her
life in earnest, Diaz says. The former diehard
bachelor who fell in love with Maynards
big heart backed his wifes decision from the
start. Did I want her to die? Of course not.
Did I want the whole thing to go away? Of

course. But did I ever want her to change

her mind? No. I would never want my wife
to suffer for no reason.
Despite seeming strong in her videos,
Maynard struggled through the days, Diaz
says. Brittanys symptoms were getting bad,
he says, his voice hoarse as he fights tears.
She felt weak, sick, nauseous. Sometimes in
the middle of the night Id wake
up and shed have a heating pad
for the pain at the base of her
neck and skull. She just couldnt
sleep. Most frightening to her
were the seizures. During one,
on a last-hurrah trip to the Grand
Canyon, it was full shaking
and then I remember thinking, Ive taken 10
breaths and Im waiting for her to [take one],
Diaz says. Eventually she breathes, but blood
shoots out of her mouth because shes bitten
her tongue. Every day she was feeling worse.
She had declared Nov. 1 as the day she
would end her lifebut also said if she felt well
that day, she would postpone that final act.

She was tired
of the pain

The day started out with a small seizure while

Maynard was still in bed. Keep an eye on
me, she asked her husband, because who
knows when another one might happen
today. After breakfast at the Portland home
they had rented with Maynards mother,
Debbie Ziegler, and stepfather, Gary Holmes,
they set off on a 90-minute hike with a group
of friends and their much-loved dogs, Charley
and Bella. Around 4.30 PM, she just knew it
was time, Diaz says. She was tired of the
pain, the discomfort, the suffering, the seizure.
Even that small one that morning was a
reminder of how sick she really was. Breaking
open 100 capsules of secobarbital and mixing
the drug with water, she drank it down and
led Diaz, Ziegler and a close friend into the
bedroom, talking and joking to keep everyone
at ease. Within five minutes she was asleep,
he says. And within 30 minutes, her breathing
slowed to the point where she passed away.
She was surrounded by the people she loved
and her passing was peaceful. Thats as much
as hes willing to say. As for her last words
and any other details, thats a sacred part of
things for me and I dont want to share that
with the world.
What he shares readily, though not easily, is
how hes keeping his promise to Maynard to
carry on. She said, Take care of those dogs,
he says. Get them back home. So, with the
help of his brothers, he quickly loaded up a
truck with furniture, kitchenware and photos
they had brought with them to make the
Oregon rental feel more homey and was back
in Alamo by Nov. 5. After that, he focused
on making her Nov. 15 memorial service,
which they kept small and private, everything
she wanted it to be. Just like their wedding,
she had a lot of things she wanted done a
particular way, says Diazs brother Adrian,
33. Its surreal to go from planning their
wedding two years ago to what poem were
going to read at her funeral.
Her ashes are spread among the Redwoods
about 40 minutes from their home, in an area
where they would walk their dogs together.
And while they went through death counselling
together, it doesnt stop Diaz on some days
from asking the inevitable and unanswerable
questions. Im not someone to feel sorry for
myself, but there are moments I think, This is
bullshit. How is it Ive lost my wife and now I
dont have her in my life? But there are other
days when, looking at the photographs on the
walls, it brings a smile to my face, says Diaz,
who keeps her drivers licence in his wallet,
tucked behind his own.You can smile that it
happened or be sad that its over. I choose to
smile. Everything Brittany and I had, the love
we had together, it was real. And it was ours.

What you need

125g butter

CHOCOLATE ICING:

cup (120g) caster

sugar

1 cups icing sugar

2 eggs

90ml (6 tbsp) boiling

water

1 cups (210g) plain

flour
3 tbsp cocoa
cup milk

3 tbsp cocoa

20g butter melted

2 cups shredded
coconut

The simplistic beauty of dipping

squares of cake in chocolate
icing, then coating them in
coconut have put lamingtons
at the top of the list of classic
Australian sweets. This recipe
adds a chocolate twist by
swapping the traditional sponge
base with a chocolate cake.
Bake them for Australia Day or
any other nostalgic occasion.

Makes 10

Preheat oven to 180C. Line

a 30cm x 20cm lamington
tin with baking paper. Cream
the butter and caster sugar
together till light and fluffy. Add
one egg and beat well, scrape
the sides and add remaining
egg, beat till well combined.
Sift the flour and cocoa onto
the butter and egg mixture,
add the milk and beat again till
combined. Pour the cake
mixture into the prepared tin
and smooth the mixture out
evenly. Bake for 20 minutes.
Allow cake to cool completely
before cutting and icing.
Trim the edges of the
cake, then cut the cake into
4 x 5 strips to make 20 even
pieces, which will be doubled
up to make 10 large lamingtons.
For the icing, sift the sugar and
cocoa into a medium bowl, add
the boiling water and butter
and whisk till combined. Put
the coconut on a flat tray.
Lightly dip one piece of
cake in the icing and
sandwich it together with a
second piece of cake. Use two
forks to handle the cake and
lightly dip the cake into the
chocolate icing on all sides, then
dip it in coconut till coated on
all sides. Place on a wire rack to
set. Repeat with remaining
lamingtons. Allow the
lamingtons to set for 20
minutes before serving.

backstage warren of the hallowed
StJames Theatre to a thrumming
drum beat thats the barometer of
Riggans frantic angst: about what
he has become, the fate of his
play, his disintegrating sanity and
the ravenous ego of his bte noir,

Keaton and Norton are a
fabulous conflagration, but
everyone else brings the pain,

Banderas wanders the desert with Cleo,
a robot voiced by his almost-ex-wife Melanie
Grifth (who has an early cameo as the bots
designer). The nonsense keeps coming when
Jacq propositions Cleo with a slow waltz
set to Charles Trenets La Mer but gets
J.McG.
the cold fender.

THE GIVER

Based on lois lowrys 1993 young-adult novel, The
Giver is set in a future society freed from disruptive
mood swings: death is referred to as elsewhere,
music is never heard and citizens are given a drug
that reduces the visual world to black, white and
grey. its like living in Whistlers Mother. however, at
all times societys big boss (Meryl Streep, in a white
lady Gandalf wig) keeps on call one personthe
Giver (Bridges)who is the sole repository of all
suppressed truth about realitys joys (dancing)
and woes (war). Chosen as apprentice for the job,
young Jonas (Thwaites) soon realises he prefers
the colours of the rainbow, even if they come with
storm clouds. The Giver has the sweet purity of a
fableit feels like a gift.

Like Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee, James Gray

seems to have an unlimited supply of New York
stories. But the latest from the director of Little
Odessa and The Yards is frustratingly lifeless.
Cotillard stars as a down-on-her-luck Polish
immigrant named Ewa who goes to America in
1921 searching for a fresh start only to be
separated from her sickly sister at Ellis Island.
Alone and threatened with deportation, Ewa is

taken in by a burlesque-house hustler and

pimp (Phoenix), who adds her to his menagerie
of fresh-off-the-boat prostitutes. Her only
chance of salvation comes from a dashing
magician (Renner). It all sounds more eventful
than it is. Not only is there a strange inertness
to the film, but each actor appears to be in a
different one. Cotillard is too fragile, Phoenix
too overwrought, and Renner too undercooked.
The real star is cinematographer Darius Khondji,
who gives the film the sepia-tinted glow of The
Godfather Part II. How can a movie that looks so
warm feel so cold?

Spencer. Now living in New York, he plays
perennial bachelor Dom in Season 2 of HBOs
hard-hitting comedy-drama Looking, which
follows the lives of four gay male friends in
San Francisco (Mondays at 8 PM on Foxtels
Showcase). Bartlett, 43, who is openly gay with a
long-term partner, chatted to WHOs Alicia Neil.

What do you make of the comparisons

being made between Looking and Girls?

Its a great compliment! I love Girls, and while

its got a different tone to Looking, it takes a
similar approach in terms of being unfiltered,
very raw and very real.

How well do you relate to your character?

I turned 40 just before we started the show
and this crisis in Doms life was approaching
and hes kind of freaking out. I certainly
asked myself big questions, like was
I happy? Was I doing what I wanted
to do? So I definitely connected.

Do you keep your porn-star

moustache when youre not filming?
No, I never had it before! I grew it in a
lame attempt to fit in while travelling
in Egypt. I did my first audition from
there and they liked it, so I kept it.

It was an incredibly exciting time.

I went to New York with no intention to stay long-term, but I
