providedtosubstantiateit.Iandmyfriendsareseriouslyoccupied,atthismoment,infindingmethodsforan
objectiveverificationofthisalmostunbelievablementalstate.But,aslongasthatdoesnotbecomepossible,the
onlyevidenceIcanprovideisthevoluminousstoreofallthemysticalliteratureoftheworld,coveringthelastmore

Ihavetalkedaboutmyconditionwithmanyscoresofeminentscientistsandscholarsindifferentpartsofthe
world.Butthemysteryandwonderstillremain.Thereisnoexplanationformyextraordinarymentalcondition.Iam
alwaysconsciousofaluminousglownotonlyinmyinterior,butpervadingthewholefieldofmyvisionduringthe
hoursofmywakefulness.Iliterallyliveinaworldoflight.Itisasifalightwereburninginmyinterior,fillingmewith
alustersobeautifulandsoravishingthatmyattentionisagainandagaindrawntowardsit.Infact,itisthenormal
stateofmyperceptionnow.Light,bothwithinandwithout,andadistinctmusicinmyears,arethetwoprominent
featuresofmytransformedbeing.Itisasif,inmyinterior,Iliveinacharming,radiantandmelodiousworld.A
senseofitsfascinationisalwayspresentinme.Theharmonyisdisturbed,moreorless,inunhealthystatesofthe
bodyinthesamewayassicknessdisturbsthepoiseofthenormalmind.Thelusterandthesoundscontinue,but
arenolongerasfascinatingasinthehealthystate.Thisdisturbanceisonlyoccasional.Normallyanindwellingjoy
andharmonymakemylifemuchmorehappyandserenethanitwasbeforethetransformation.GopiKrishna,

Theluminositydoesnotendwithmywakingtime.Itpersistseveninmydreams.Ineverystateofbeingeating,
drinking,talking,working,laughing,grieving,walkingorsleepingIalwaysdwellinarapturousworldoflight.Itis
obviousthattheselforobserverinmehasexperiencedachangeandanewbeinghasbeenbornwhoisalways
enwrappedinasheathofalluringlight.Ifmyexperiencewereconfinedtothestateofluminosityalone,Iwould,in

deservedattention.Butthisinnerradianceisattendedbyanotherevenmoreincrediblefeaturewhich,frommy
pointofview,isofutmostimportanceandprovidesapossiblesolutionto,atleast,fourstillunsolvedriddlesofthe
humanmind,namely:(1)mysticalexperienceorillumination,(2)inspirationandgenius,(3)psychicfaculties,such
asclairvoyance,telepathy,prophesy,etc.,and(4)awholegamutofmentalandnervousdisorderswhichcanbe
definedandclassifiedthroughascientificstudyofthephenomenon.
Themoreamazingfeatureofmyexperienceconsistsinthis:TheenchantinglightIperceive,bothinternallyand
outside,isalive.Itpulsateswithlifeandintelligence.ItislikeaninfiniteOceanofAwarenesspervadingmyown
smallpoolofconsciousnesswithinandthewholeuniverseIperceivewithmysenses,outside.Itisasifaradiant
livingPresenceencompasseseverythingthatexistsbothwithinandoutsideofme.MuchasIwishtodoso,itis
extremelydifficultformetodrawaclearpictureofthisaspectofmyexperience.Formetheuniverseisalive.A
stupendousIntelligence,whichIcansensebutneverfathom,loomsbehindeveryobjectandeveryeventinthe
universe,silent,still,sereneand,inthewordsofBullahShah,theSufiofPunjab,immovablelikeamountain.Itisa
staggeringspectacle.Icandescribeitonlybyadistantanalogy.Imaginetheuniverseasagiganticmovie,
unfoldingsceneafterscene,intimeandspace,onaninfinitelyvast,intenselyaliveetherealscreen,whichremains

entirelyunaffectedbytheactionofthedrama,andyouwillhaveadimpictureofwhatImean.Themysticshave

andwakefulness,webutrepeat,onaminiaturescale,thecosmiccycleofourbondageandliberationextendingto

calamitousforthewholerace.Wehavetobearinmindthatthetwobloodiestwarsinallhistoryhavealreadybeen

ShvetashvataraUpanishad
GreatisthegloryoftheImmanentSoulthatisallpervading,allknowing,infiniteandselfluminous.Onlythose
rarefew,whoknow,undergothenecessarydisciplinesandpractices.Itisverilythewisewhocontroltheactivities
oftheintellectandpracticemeditationandconcentration.
Placingthebodyinastraightposture,holdingthechest,neck,andheaderect,anddrawingthesensesandthe
mindintotheheart,theKnowingOneshouldcrossoverallthefearfulcurrentsbytheraftofBrahman.
Controllingthesenseswithafirmeffortandregulatingthevitalfunctionsofthebody,withslowrespirationhe
shouldbreathethroughthenostrilswithoutdistraction,keepinghisholdonthemind,asonedoesonthereins
attachedtorestivehorses.Oneshouldperformonesexercisesinconcentration,resortingtocavesandother
suchpureplaceshelpfultothepracticeplaceswherethegroundislevelwithoutpebblesandthescenery
pleasingtotheeye,wherethereisnowind,dust,fire,dampness,ordisturbingnoise.
WhenthefivefoldperceptionofYoga,arisingfrom(concentratingthemindon)earth,water,fire,air,andether,has
appearedtotheyogi,thenhebecomespossessedofabodymadeofthefireofYoga,untouchedbydisease,old
ageordeath.

ThebodymadeofthefireofYogareferstothemantleoflightroundtheKnowingSelfwhich,inthecaseofthe
accomplishedyogi,encircleshisinnerbeingdayandnight.Thisisthedivyadehaorthedivinebody,insidethe
grossbodyoftheflesh,inwhichonefindsoneselfunsheathed,whenKundaliniirradiatesandopensthenew
channelofperceptioninthebrain.

oftheblessed.Thelatter,withpredominantlyanimaltraits,sinkdeeperintodelusion,withtheirbehaviorblocking
thewaytotheirownevolutiontowardshigherrealmsofthemind.Howcanthedownwardtrendbearrestedand
theblockageremoved,unlesstheanimalpropensitiesarecurbedandthemindreformed?Thepreliminariesof
Yogaaredesignedtoachievethispurpose.Withpatienthandlingofthemind,withprayer,withtheinspiration
drawnfromthelivesandteachingsofmoreevolvedsouls,andwithpersistenteffort,victorycanbewonandthe

therewerethousandsofthingsnotadaptedtotheideasofnaturalthought,andthereforeinexpressibleexceptby
variegationsofheavenlylight,andnotatallbyhumanwords.

createtheElixirofLife,thenonegoesthroughthepass.Theembryo,whichmustbedevelopedbytheworkof
warming,nourishing,bathing,andwashing,isformed.Awholeyearofthisfireperiodisnecessarybeforethe
embryoisborn,shedsthemembranes,andpassesoutoftheordinaryworldintotheholyworld.TheSecretof

Themethodisquitesimpleandeasy.Buttherearesomanytransformingandchangingconditionsconnected
withitthatitissaid:Notwithoneleapcanamansuddenlygetthere.TheSecretoftheGoldenFlower
