Collecting Design
Ana Elena Mallet
Ana Elena Mallet is a Design and
Contemporary Art critic and curator.
Design objects say a lot about the historical period in which they were
produced, about the ideals that were then held, about the materials in vogue
and about the aesthetic tendencies that were in turn. Design reflects the spirit
of an age, besides revealing the intimate details of a society, its longings and
day-to-day.
In a country with little by way of a design culture, the surge of projects that
seeks to preserve it, study it, and exhibit it should be praised. Collecting design
deals with preserving memory, with studying material culture in a precise
moment in order to understand how individuals faced their everyday.
Archivo Diseo y Arquitectura opens its doors after several years of in-house
work, of searching for its vision and finding its mission: collecting design,
studying it, exhibiting it and publishing it will be part of its manifesto.
A collection that seeks to put the audience in contact with Twentieth and
Twenty-first Century works that are essential to understand modern being.
Pieces that because of their utilitarian character have perhaps gone unnoticed
but that now, within the context of an exhibition room, can acquire a new
meaning and maybe even symbolic and aesthetic value.
Objects so simple and functional they become fundamental part of the
everyday, objects that through the exhibition scope turn into entities for
reflection and history.

Coleccionar diseo
Ana Elena Mallet
Ana Elena Mallet es crtica
y curadora de Diseo y Arte
contemporneo.

Wait by the door

instead of waiting
by the door we

The bench we can
take everywhere
and in that way
the enemys corpse
wont escape.
Los proverbios no

adagios, aforismos,
epitafios y
oraciones que

Aguarda en la

proverbio chino.
Y si en vez de
esperar junto a una
puerta lo hacemos
en un banco
plegable? Y no en
la puerta, sino en
cualquier lado: en
la orilla del lago
o en la terraza de

lo podemos llevar
a todas partes y
as el cadver
del enemigo no

In the trunk of
the old Plymouth
there were a tire, a

The rest was called
enthusiasm. The
car belonged to

The following research was presented as a lecture at the UNAMs

It is important to
draw a distinction
between the
folding chair that
the present text
deals with and the
example entitled
Silla Corona by a
Nordic designer in
1961. In Mexico,
the Corona Chair
establishes itself as
a referent through
its constant popular
use by being an
anonymous work.
On the other hand,
the Silla Corona
(No. ej605) from
1961, designed by
Danish designer
Paul Volther, is
a sophisticated
example of Nordic
design, which
gathers its name
from an allusion to
the movement of a
solar eclipse.

that has produced this lack of interest in the movement and focused it
in the already mythical Bauhaus.
In spite of this, constructivism
was a means of communication
between the USSR and the West.
Lissitsky, for instance, had a long
stay in Bauhaus as an ambassador
of Russian culture in Germany.
This happened in 1921, epoch in
which he must have shared much
of his practical wisdom with the
alumni and faculty of Vkhutemas
counterpart in Germany, thus
influencing German designs (lets
take into consideration that Lissitsky
integrated different arts, which was
one of the primary ideals of the
modern man). Moreover, there were
several personalities of the Russian
avant-garde that moved to Germany
in order to work in Bauhaus.
The chair presented above was made
in 1928, and the german version in
1930 8. These two examples help us
track the design of the Silla Corona,
for it is in them that we find the
origins of its modern relative.
It is important to see that the supporting structure in the second chair
is the same as in the Russian model,
with slight modifications in the folding system that bring it closer to the
techniques of industrial production.
This redesign consists in changing
the steel for tubular material, so
widely used by the Dessau school
due to its industrial constitution
(1). Additionally, this second design
improved the folding system in order
to make it less feeble. One pivot
was eliminated by hiding it under
the continuous structure of the legs
(2), thus making the design more
economic, while the new props
give a better support for the seat (3).
The angularity of the triangle was
modified; the rear legs join the back
further up (4), which gives more
stability to the structure. Finally,
the crosspiece for the feet was suppressed and its force was substituted
by glides (5).
In this text I am taking the first folding chairs of the twentieth century
as cultural indexes, for, as already
established, a chair can convey
strong ideological contents, as the

Fixing Boundaries
To conclude we will have to go over
the history of our industry in order
to determine the years in which this
chair was introduced to our country,
for the dates I have are not exact
enough (though approximate) in
order to consider them definite. Lets
take a look then at the generalities
of the industrys development in our
country. James Oles is very helpful
for this in his introduction to an
Art History study on the representation of industrial landscape in our
country, where he states that as early

Marcando Territorio
considerar industriales a ciudades
dedicadas especficamente a la
metalurgia como Monterrey. Para
los treinta, la ciudad de Mxico
llegaba apenas al milln y medio
de habitantes y contaba con un
nmero aproximado de veinte mil
automviles14.

aos. Hoy se puede decir que ha
alcanzado un primer momento de
maduracin y, aunque todava es
joven, cuenta ya con una identidad
gracias a sus diversas lneas de
investigacin. La genealoga ha
funcionado como gua dentro de
nuestro entender de la Historia
del Diseo. Especficamente,
ayud a delinear una de nuestras
categoras: Diseo para la Industria.
Este mtodo, aunque no se aplica
con completo rigor, ha servido
como eje para poder ir tejiendo un
sentido dentro de esta categora en
particular, del cual se desprenden
en su totalidad las piezas de esta
muestra. El concepto proviene
de las ciencias y, aplicado en las
humanidades, resulta mucho ms
flexible. As, nuestro primer relato
histrico se construye no de manera
lineal ni temporal, sino que la
genealoga desde el punto de vista
de las Humanidades marca inicios
y discontinuidades.
Genealoga quiere decir, pues,
origen y nacimiento, pero tambin
diferencia o distancia del origen.

Technology
Portability is a characteristic that
design searches and in some extent,
electromagnetic practice too, which
from its beginnings has been closely
related to technological advances
and permissiveness1. This curious
eagerness to take technology everywhere, has allowed sound to gain
some ground. The radios path is the
one that best illustrates the way to
reduction, a sort of search to adapt
space. Inside the homes, phonographs were already the center of
family life, a place that they later on
shared with the receptor radio.
The model Atwater Kent no. 20 is a
more refined proposal for the first
radio, which looked more like a
homemade experiment. Here, you
can still observe the idea of some
dials, which worked synchronizing
signals with the help of an antenna
that uncomfortably invaded the
homes living rooms. Radio allowed
to access other ways of entertainment destined to the high classes:
concert rooms and big theatres
located in far away places. However,
their look of experimental machines
wasnt totally compatible with the
houses living rooms.
So for the first time Design was used
as a tool to disguise and make more
acceptable a certain technology
inside the house. In the beginning,
radio consoles were big furniture
introduced to the houses of great
purchasing power in an ostentatious way, so that consoles were
solved as real furniture, cabinets
not only displaying radios, but also
storing phonographs or gramophones. Through a material such as
wood, a more emphatic closeness
developed with the user. Once the
domestic space was conquered, the
radio began to popularize and to be
well received also in public leisure
spaces, where it gladly coexisted
with reproducers (gramophones and
phonographs) of the time.
With the transistors arrival in 1947,
the portable electric mediums era
definitely began. This discovery
allowed the replacement of the
radios and gramophones bulbs
(and afterwards televisions as well),
so that the electric transmission
was more powerful, in that way

Dunne & Rabby, diseadores
del Reino Unido, son autores de
un libro seminal del diseo
contemporneo, Design Noir, The
Secret Life of Electronic Objects, en
donde reconocen que los aparatos
electrnicos han sido subestimados
considerndolos aparatos banales.
En un apartado de su libro, hablan
acerca de la maravilla de dispositivo
que es el Sony Walkman, un objeto
concebido por primera vez como una
interfase entre el usuario y el mundo.
Cuando el Sony Walkman fue
introducido en los ochenta, le
ofreci a la gente una nueva
manera de relacionarse con su
entorno urbano.
