Dear Christian Friends,

It seems as though I just wrote a few days ago but I am

I don't always feel that I have something worth writing

We are happy to announce that Mr, Yu was baptized on Jan-

him and to partake of it with him. Now other members of the body of Christ are anxious to take

We tried to arrange a meeting to preach to the immediate co-munity there, as you have been prayin~, but so far this has not worked out. When talking to Mrs, Yu about it she dismissed the pos

Because of these meetings and advertisements our neighbors are really becoming good friends.

February 11th marked the Chinese Lunar New Year,

To tell the truth this last month has been rather discouraging |||h

Dear Brothers & Sisters in the Lord,

I know by your letters that you are anxious to hear

about our trij^. to Thailand, I've been back just

five
tell you about our

whole trip,

.A#
-i-'

Our regular readers will remember that we felt

called to go to Thailand for a month when-we

received a letter on February 2^th from Robert

Morse just when we were praying earnestly about

God's leading, (see Feb. report)

^^

After being

there we can recognize many things which strongly

indicate God's will: (1) the great need among the

i '

Chinese there, (2) what was accomplished in a

month's time, and (3) the fact that the missionaries there had been praying that God would send

^-'"iffW

someone to work with the Chinese,

a "streefin No-o

Janet, Nathan,, and I left Tadpei on March 24 and,, after a couple of days in Hong Kon^ of see
ing the missionary work there and shopping, we went on to Bangkok on the 26th, The next morn
ing we took a ten hour bus ride to Chiangmai and met the Eugene Morse (with whom we stayed
while there) and the Robert Morse family. The next day the Morses showed us around Chiangmai,
Then on Saturday,, March 29th, we started off on a three-day trip to a Chinese village named
"No-o" which is just three kilometers from the Burmese border. It is a two-year-old refugee
village of over 100 split bamboo houses with thatched roofs and dirt floors. We stayed with
a Mr, Lee, a Christian man, who had accepted the Lord while living in Burma, Most of these
Chinese in this new village had lived in Burma for around 20 years. He escorted us around
the village, mainly to meet those who were believers, Ro'bert Morse had no trouble conversing
with these people in the Yimanese dialect of Chinese but I guess Janet and I could only
understand about 50% of what they said. Since the Mandarin dialect which we speak is the
national language of China they said they could understand us. We can learn the Yunanese
dialect since it is a matter of tone change, pronunciation, and work usage. Even in the

short time there we picked up quite a bit.

In spite of this language problem we were able to

join Robert somewhat in witnessing of God's power and love for them. We found that there
were several who had been believers for 7 or 8 years but had not been baptized. The next
morning, Easter Sunday, we had a Church service where both Robert and I preached. Nine of
those present wanted to be baptized so when the service was over we walked for 30 minutes to
a sink-hole where, after more instruction, they were emersed in the name of our Lord,
This trip to No-o was the only one Janet got to go on. She left with Nathan for Taiwan on
April 2nd, However when she got back she told the Chinese brethren here of the condition of
the Chinese village in Thailand andi they were so moved by it that they decided to send $52,70,
I used the money to buy a cassette taoe nlaver and took tapes of songs and gospel messages.
Two tapes were of Mrs, Dittemore's reidio programs of Acts & John, Just, before I returned to
Taiwan I was able to go back up to No-o and have a Sunday Church service with these brethren
and present them with the tape recorder, I used the money for the tape recorder because

most of the people there cannot read the Bible or a song book, I "loaned" the tape recorder
to Mr, Li first and asked that it be handed around from family to family till everyone had
had a chance to listen. After church was over Mr, Li had the tape recorder on in his home
and three neighbors came over to listen# I think we will be hearing more concerning the

affects of this.

Now Joseph Chen here in Taiwan has made a tape of Gospel songs especially

trip'we* ^.,

. truck on which we rode part of the way to Nc-c

These villages.are (except for the Keren village) Lisu but

there were Chinese in all of them. Unlike the refugee village, most of these Chinese were

literate and we had no problem at all in vocal communication. We were able to give tracts
and even a few Bibles to these, i don't know how many villages like this there are and even
the government does not know how many thousands of Chinese are in them. One thing is certain
though, and that is the absence of a witness for Christ there. As we talked to people of
God's Love for them and His Power to save we found they knew nothing of Jesus.
I would like to tell of one experience in the village of Sa-meng which took parts of two
days to get to and get back from and where we stayed for three nights and four days. On the
afternoon of the third day I became rather discouraged because, although there were eight
Chinese families in the village I had not had an opportunity to be in one of their homes or

tc talk to any of them about Jesus. (l had been involved in observing Robert and David Morse
as they worked with the Lisu in the village) At that time I climbed the hill overlooking the
village to read God's word and pray. In prayer I admitted that I did not know how to
approach these people and was afraid. Then I asked God to have mercy over two of the Chinese

far.ilies in particular (I had at least met some in these two houses),

I asked God, in the

name of Jesus, to bind Satan in his efforts to blind them and use me to present His wonderful
good news to them. That afternoon as I caune down from the mountain things took a complete
change, I was invited to come into both of the homes prayed for and to visit. They both
invited me to come back later when the whole family would be there. One, the Wongs, invited
me for the evening meal. That evening the Lord really led as we opened His Word together arid
His Power to heal and save was shown. When before I did not know what approach to use, we
now read together the accounts of how Jesus had the authority to cast out evil spirits, t'le
power to heal, and the mercy to forgive sins, as though I had prepared this outline for a
year. They all listened attentively to the gospel and even asked questions, David Morse,

though he douldn't speak Chinese, was with me at the Wong's house.

We left with a happy

heart and went on to attend a Lisu meeting across the "street." Later that night, just as
I was coming out of the Lisu house, Mr, Wong's son-in-law, who had been in on the Bible study,
was waiting for me.

He asked me if I could come into the house he wanted to talk to me

about something. Came to find out he had,had an evil spirit for years and now that he had
been thinking about the Lord he was
really having an inner conflict.
He said he
wanted to be delivered from this demon SLfid asked if Jesus could do it,

I told him he would

have to have faith. i,at this point, shuddered at my own lack of faith, (We had read the story
of Christ casting out the demon in Mark 9sl^-27* Please read it!) Why we had read the
scriptures we had I did not know but God knew this man'sneed. He said, "I believe!" David
and I prayed for him, asking God in the r-me of Jesus to, on the basis of this man's faith,

deliver him from this evil spirit. The symptoms of the demon's presence left him and the next
dt,y as I visited with Mr, Shen he was resting in God's peace^ This is only one experience
and this account is just too inadequate!

I can't really "tell it like it is" in this news

letter, Therefore I am going to make a 60 minute cassette tape recording of our whole
exciting trip. If you would like to buy one and will send a check for $2,75 (this is cost

for tape end postage t;pas are expensive here) I will send you a copy.

Maybe it would be

better yet for you to send your own cassette tape and I will ii^e you a copy for nothing.
I deeply hope some of you can do this because I'm really excited about what God is doing and

wcints to do among the Chinese in Thailand, Also, I took quite a few slides while in Thailand
and am sending a slide program to our forwarding agent with script and taped descriptions.
Write for these if you are interested.

Now we are making -plans to go back. There are some problems involved. At a time when
Thailand is asking Americans to leave it is not easy to get visas. We axe thankful for the

problems, though, because it gives us a wonderful opportunity to see God's will in the way Ke

works them out.

We axe also wanting to know what your opinion is.

Will you continue to

support us in prayer ^d offerings? Would we be going with your blessing? W want to know
your opinion!! I tell you the truth we are sitting on the edge of selling our belongings
here and going to Thailand even if for three monuhs or a year.

We are waiting for your

response! We feel that the night is coming in Thailand when no man can work.^ I think that
in a very short time we are going to be looking at the desperate faces of Thailand in Newsweek
Then we will say, "if only they had the hope of the world Jesus Christ, We are aware of the

dangers there but that is not important.

Too long we have sat off in a corner and watched as

people's lives and liberties are taken (l am talking a"bout myself). In these days of so much
physical defeat we have lost our will to fight. May God inspire in us the will to live,
fight, and die for Jesus Christ the captain who will never losel!! He will conquer! His
word will not return unto Him void!I

We will not have to give up and there will "be no

dishonor.

No, this does not mean we axe leaving Taiwan. We feel like we are only going on a temporary

assignment and will be back in a few years at the very most. Mom will be carrying orPwith
the^-work here as will other missionaries.

We are truly proud for Christ's sake of the faith

and strength of the remnant here We praise God that on May ^th that Mr. Frank Chyou who has
been coming to services for almost a year now was "baptized into Christ,
Of course we realize that God may want us to stay right where we are, jt is a fact that our

ministry here has been helped because of our experiences in Thailand. Please pray with us
then that God will reveal His will.

Dear Friends,

I should have written to you long agoI

I know that you

have not even known where we have "been for the last two

months.

We are still in Taiwan and probably vrill npt

be going to Thailand, at least for some time.

One reason we haven't written is because it has been

almost this long in knowing God's will in the matter.

As you probably remember, we had applied for a visa at

the end of April, We were personal friends of the
consul of the Thai Embassy here since we lived in the
same apartment building. He had sent a special per
sonal recomendation along with the application for the
visa. We met all requirements and, humanly speaking,
had everything we needed and more to get the visa back
in the four or five weeks the consul said i t would

take. However, two months passed and still no visa

had come. V/e had heard that the Thai Embassy might
close at the end of June and we prayed that God would
provide visas before that happened to show us if he
war:ted us to go or net. On June 3^th the Embassy did

Nathsm taking his first steps

c1osj because Thailand recognized Red China and we

sti.ll had no visa. We take this as a closing of the
door for us into Thailand, at least for the time being.

Other prayers were answered, it seems, in the positive.

For example the transportation money has come in, we
only received letters from you encouraging us to go,
and the call continues to come from Thailand asking us

to come. We think that maybe God is saying, "Not yet,"

Now we will continue to whole-heartedly work here and
try again t-c go to Thailand at a later date,
':ow w'l.at have we been doing here for the last three

ro-iths? In :-'ay I spent most of my tine preparing for

Because of the contacts with his family and neighbors Mr. Yu s

have had opportunities to witness of God's power and love in .e

Dear Christian Friends,

This is a vicious circle.,., I put off writing to you, not because I don't want to, but because
tnere is so much to say in a short time. Thinking that I will have more time tomorrow I wait,
but then the next week I have that much more to write about and no more time. Janet is help
ing me in the office tonight to get some things don.e while I write and then she will be typing
the final draft. iJven though we don't write often we think of you all often and pray for our
supporters daily and always thank God for your faith coid labor of love.

Most of all in the last two months, we praise God-for those who have been baptized:

Mr. Yu, Miss

Syu, and Miss Jyang. Each is an interesting story, Mr, Yu is the younger brother of the crippled
Mr. Yu th'it we have talked so much about lately. At the very first of September when I went to
the Yu's house for a weekly visit, I found out that the younger brother had run away from home.
He had gotten into trouble and since the police had gone to their house at 3:00 A.M. in search of

him - (he was not at home) - he was afraid to go home. We left word with his worried mother and
his best friend that we wanted him to get in touch with us and then we prayed night and day for
two days. Then he called us and we urged him to come to stay at our house till things got worked
out. He came over late Tuesday night while I was out calling, but next morning, September 3rd,
after having a chance to talk to him for a couple of hours he was baptized into Christ, He stay
ed at our house for a couple of weeks, doing odd jobs for us. Finally things got settled, thank
the Lord, and he is now back in school (he had dropped out a year earlier). Since his baptism
he has been one of the most faithful attenders at Church services plus he has gotten five friends
together in two different locations for English Bible classes. He has already started feeling

the temptation of the evil one and the correcting hand of God's discipline when he has stepped
out of line. He is sharing in the suffering of Christ, too, as his mother has all but disinher
ited him for his faith in Jesus, He is not what most people would think of as "Christian mater

ial" but here again is an example of how God chooses the foolisheven the things which are not,
to bring to nought the things that are. I believe that God is trying to use the Yu brothers to
bring Ma-ma Yu to Himself and we see how He is finally starting to get a foothold in this com
munity of the blind and lame that they live in. Three weeks ago the crippled Mr. Yu called us
up and said that he had been talking to his friend, Mr, Chen, about Jesus and that he wanted
to be a Christian, Since he was Taiwanese, Joseph Lo, the Taiwanese preacher, and myself went
to talk to him. The next day, this man, though still not a Christian himself, had gone and told
another family about this -ind they called me asking if I would come and pre-ach to them, Mr, Lo
and I went to discover that the mcxn was a victim of polio and that his wife had been blind from
birth. They have two beautiful normal boys. Although the lady, Mrs, Tsai, has been a believer
since she was 19 she has not been to Church since their marriage. I have never knowingly met
a man as morally corrupt as Mr. Tsai, but there is a spark of interest as he wants us to come

every week for a home Bible meeting and his wife has asked us to buy her a Braille Bible,

taking the nine volumes of the Braille New Testament to her tomorrow.

I am

Just the day before yester

day when I was there I met another neighbor who is also blind and he asked me to come to his

house.

I plan on going there tomorrow while in that neighborhood.

Another evidence of the Holy

Spirit growing His fruits in the hearts of the Yu brothers is their kindness.

I tried to make that 1st paragraph shorter but I don't know what to leave out. Undoubtedly Miss
Syu's and Miss Jang's story would be just as exciting if I knew it all. ^Miss Syu', who was bap
tized on October 12th, was led to Christ by her elder sister wlio is a member of the Church hex'e

and who herself has recently lejirned the value of following God's Word.

She has just finalized

divorce proceedings with a non-Christian man who "tried to kill her among a few other things* .-She
has had to pay a dear price for not "iseeking first the kingdom of God," Miss Jang is one of Mrs,
Dittemore's radio listeners who wrote in saying that she wanted to accept Christ as her Saviour

and find a Church to attend.

She was immersed on Thanksgiving day, Nov. 28th.

On September 19-21 we had a goodYweek-end retre^ at a camp-grounds near the beach. This was for

all of the students of our Engli^Bible classes auid the church people. We had 2^ days of solid

Bible tesbching and good Christian fun.

We had 33 attenders of which one, a stiuient of Sam Hazle-

We are plsuining smother for January 1-^, Pray with us about it.

Because, ofTthere-'being ^igome new additions to the Lord's Kingdom lately we started another three-

has "been a real joy to work with them, I know that they sure faithful men who will be able to
teach others also.

It looks like we will need to start another class soon after the turn of a

new year.

The Billy Graham Cn^ggde here was a boost to us in many ways. Several of the church members participated in the Ci^sade by being in the choir or "being ushers, counselors, and supervisors. Of
course hearing the preaching weis a blessing to all ^d after the Crusade, which was held Octo"ber
29th to Novem"ber 2nd^ we received i'Tnames of prospects who had made decisions at the invitations.
We have called on all of these and some have .attended. We just thanked God to hear Mr, Graham
instruct those who came forward each night to "study .God's Word, find a Church, and "be baptized."

(the translator translated it "be immersed")

;^The book-store'is slowly growing. The 3rd edition of the cookbook put out by our adssionary wo

men, Tips '^^'Tteeats on Taiwan, has just cone off the pressT^S-'ready 250 of the booklets called
"Discipleship", which includes a baptismal, ^certificate and is given to people at the tine of

baptism have been sold. This is in'CH^ese,) We just had 2,000 printed. We still have over 400
copies of the Training for'^r^ce^'course "A Survey of the Bible" in Chinese which were printed
two years ago.

Hopefully the second edition will be going out in another two years.

And, of

course we still have the Chinese "Jesus" sweatshirts and T-shirts and stickers.

We have just had a nice Thanksgiving:season. Thanksgiving night we had a carry-in supper here
with the Chinese brethren after which Miss Jang was ..ba.ptized. Then the next day, Friday the

23th, we went to Lo Tung for two days of Thanksgiving food, fun, and fellowship with the other
missionaries.

We received the greatest "blessing ftom the work that we saw ^Ing done there and

being able to study God's Wo^ and sing together. We praise God with the Sid.ie8. for five bap
tisms they have had there including three of the children in the "Home of God's Love" and two
young ladies who are helping out there

We thank the Lord for his watch-care over our family, ^^e three older children are back in
schools Beth in the 33^1 grade, Becky in the Ist, wd Jonathan attends a half day of kindergarten,

sides taking care of the physical and spiifitual needs of our family, she teaches a weekly Eng
lish Bible class, goes calling with me, is a helper to the needy, a hostess to the steady stream
of visitors we have, and listens patiently to my shoulder-crying.

I've enjoyed writing this report to you.

It has helped me to s what God has been doing lately.

In this summarythe last three months don't look so "bad, of coUrse we g through them a day and

an hour at a time, just like you have with the same amount of frustrations and disappointments.
y<^e thing I have decided lately is that I am going to stop trying to do "Church work" and just
try to teach and preach the gospel in such a way that people will see and be able to confess that
Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God and let Jesus build His Church on this foundation.

You know, the Chiu?ch services have sure beeryio^ lately, since Jesus hMjseen doing the building.
May God bless you during the coming Cteistmas season.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

We have a few Christmas plans and we will be talking about those events next time.

Yours in Jesus, on behalf of the whole family,

Alan Bemo

Dear Brothers A Sisters in Jesus,
Again I an sorry it has heen so long since we have
written. We have appreciated, though, the correspond
ence which we have had with sose of you personally*
We praise the Lord that He haa led two yoiing ladies to
he baptised latelyt

Miss Jang at the end of December,

1975> smd Miss Kang on March 7th. Miss Jang responded

by letter to Mrs. Dittemcre*s radio progrcims, telling
us she wanted to be baptized. Miss Kang was completely
different. She has been coming to services and Bnglish
Bible classes off and on for about five years. We had
talked to her many times about becoming a Christian but
she and two very close friends would never make a
commitment. A few months before Hiss Jang was baptized
Miss Kang called us and sedd that she really felt she
needed the Lord because of personal problems. Janet
and I went to see her the next evening. Her problem?
She found that she could not control her temper and

wanted to have the new life of the fruits of the Spirit.''

We taught her more that night but she still did not
completely believe that God had raised Jesus from the

recording hraille hyans

dead, the first condition of salvation.(Rom.l0i9) Then a few weeks later she said to us,
after Church service one Sunday, "I believe, help thou my luibelief." Then after a few
more weeks she confessed Jesus as Lord (Romans lOjlO) and pleuined to be baptized a few
days later at the same time as Miss Jang.

Then, just before her baptism she called and

asked if what she had heard was true that if she weis a Christian she could not marry a

non-Christian. I read to her what the scripture said (II Gor.6il^) and explained that it
would be better for a Christian not to marry a non-Christian. She, therefore said she

would put it off and think about it some more. We sadly remembered and reminded her of

Lvike i4|26| **If anyone cones to me and does not hate his own father and mother(her
parents also objected) and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes and even his

own life, he cannot bo my disciple.** However, we are glad she counted the cost (Luke 14|
28-30) and we rejoice that she did finally make this most important decision.
Our cassette library of sermons and songs is continuing to grow.

I told some of the

blind people in Pei Tou where we've been working, that I was hoping to get
hymns inthe braille hymnal recorded so blind people could learn the songs,
later the word had gotten around and a blind girl, whom we had net earlier
of Mrs. Dittenore's radio listeners, called and said she would like to do

I feel that the Lord haa led us to get aquainted with a restoration movement here in
Taiwan. It started about 1920 on Mainland China and has spread throughout China, Asia,

and even to America.

This group call themselves simply the "Local Church," The man God

has used in this movement is Watchm^ Nee, of whom you have probably heard. Because
this movement is so important to ui^'and our work I really hope you can do some research
along this line.

The book, AGAINST THE TIDE by Angus I, Kinnear, would be very good

reading as it is about Watchman Nee and his work. It is published by Victory Press,
Evangelical publishers Ltd., Lottbridge Drove, Eastbourne, Sussex. You should be able
to get this book in any Christian Bookstore and if not ask them to order it for you.
Also I have made an hour cassette recording for any of you who are interested.

You

don't need to send a blank tape or money as I still have lots of bleuiks left from those
extra that people sent who wanted the Ihailand tape. On the tape I tell about some of
our personal experiences here with this movement and make quotations from various books.
Also included is a bibliography of other books, I think this will be a great blessing
in your life. Certainly this study is a must for any one planning on going to another

country to preach the gospel. We might call Watchman Nee the Alexander Campbell of Asia.
Formerly we were planning on going back to the States during the summer of 1977 for
furlough but now we are praying about the possibility of going back this summer, I feel
very much that we need to do this to get some further training and possibly siake a new
effort to enter Thailand from the States. Possibly God has something altogether
different in mind. Please pray with us concerning this matter.
