TheBasicTappingProcedureTheCenterpieceof
EFT
TheEFTTappingBasicRecipeisaneasytousehealingtoolthatprovidestheveryfoundationfor
expandingyouremotionalfreedom.ItisthetappingprocedurethatweuseineveryroundofEFTitis
easytolearnandeasytoapply,whichiswhyEFThasbecomewellknownasatoolthatanyonecanuse.
Byitself,theEFTTappingBasicRecipecanbeappliedtoanyissueyouwant,andalthoughitisstillonly
thefirststeptoEFTsfullpotential,itcontinuestoprovideresultsthatrangefromencouragingto
impressive.Therestofthebenefitscomewhenyoulearnhowtoaimthetappingprocedureatthebest
targets,butyouwillneedtoknowthebasicsbeforelearningtherest,soletsgetstarted!

Arecipe,ofcourse,hascertainingredientswhichmustbeaddedinacertainorder.Ifyouarebakinga
cake,forexample,youmustusesugarinsteadofpepperandyoumustaddthesugarbeforeyouputitin
theoven.
Otherwise....nocake.
TheEFTBasicRecipeisnoexception.Eachingredientmustbeintroducedpreciselyasdescribedand
theymustbeaddedintheproperorder.
AlthoughIamgoingtosomelengthtodescribeitindetail,TheEFTTappingBasicRecipehasonly5
briefsteps(ingredients)andtakesverylittleefforttolearn.Oncememorized,eachroundofitcanbe
performedinabout30seconds.Itwilltakesomepractice,ofcourse,butafterafewtriesthewhole
processbecomesfamiliarandyoucandoitinyoursleep(millionshavedonethis,includingchildren).
Youwillthenhaveapermanenttoolthatyoucanuseforalifetime.


RememberourDiscoveryStatement?
"Thecauseofallnegativeemotionsisadisruptioninthebodysenergysystem.

Itfollows,then,thatenergydisruptionsarethereasonwehaveanykindofemotionalissuelikegrief,
anger,guilt,depression,trauma,andfear.Sincebothphysicalandperformanceissuesoftenhave
emotionalroots,italsofollowsthatclearingenergydisruptionscanbeusefulforthoseaswell.
Oncewefindthoseenergydisruptions,weusethetappingprocesstocorrectthem.TheEFTTapping
BasicRecipeblendsfocusedwordingwitha9pointTappingsequence.Thefocusedwordingtunesusin
totheissueandthis,inturn,pointsustotheenergydisruptions(zzzzzts)thatweneedtoaddress.
Thiswordingisanessentialpartoftheprocessbecauseittellsoursystemwhatweareworkingon.
Negativeemotionscomeaboutbecausewearetunedintocertainthoughtsorcircumstanceswhich,in
turn,causeourenergysystemstodisrupt.Otherwise,wefunctionnormally.One'sfearofheightsisnot
present,forexample,whileoneisreadingthecomicsectionoftheSundaynewspaper(andthereforenot
tunedintotheproblem).
Oncetunedintotheissue,theTappingstimulatestheenergypathwaystherebybalancingtheresulting
energydisruptions(zzzzzts).Also,forclarification,thepointsweuseareatorneartheendpointsofthe
energypathways(meridiansandvessels)ORatpointsalongthesepathwaysthatareclosetothe
bodyssurface.
Youmaybeawarethatacupuncturistsstudyanduseover300meridianpointsonthebodyinsteadofthe
merehandfulthatareusedbytheEFTTappingprocess.Further,unlikeEFT,acupuncturistsassociate
eachoftheenergypathwayswithbodyorgans(kidney,stomach,spleen,etc.)andemotions(anger,fear,
sadness,etc.).Wearenotdenyingthevalidityofthisapproachbutweareignoringit.EFTTapping

representsadifferentuseofthesepathwaysthatallowssomeonewithnoformaltraininginChinese
medicinetorealigndisruptionsontheirownwithasimpleprocess.
YoumaylearntheintricaciesoftheChinesemeridiansystemifyouwish,butthisknowledgeisnot
necessarytogeneratefirstclassresultswithEFT.Inpractice,the12meridiansand2governingvessels
areinterconnectedandthussendingbalancingenergydownonepathwayinfluencesotherpathways.That
iswhyweusuallyneedtoaddressonlyafewpathwaystogetthejobdone.

Thesetipsanswerthemostcommonquestions.

SomeoftheTappingpointshavetwinpointsoneachsideofthebody.Forexample,the
"eyebrow"pointontherightsideofthebodyhasatwinpointontheleftsideofthebody.Years
ofexperiencehavetaughtusthatyouonlyneedtotaponeofthesetwinpoints.However,ifyou
havebothhandsfreeyoucancertainlytaponbothsidesforgoodmeasure.Youwillseemedo
thisofteninourArtofDeliveryvideos.aswellasthenumerousadvancedvideosinGary's
Courses:OnlineCoachingLibrary.

Youcanalsoswitchsideswhenyoutapthesepoints.Forexample,duringthesameroundofThe
EFTTappingBasicRecipe,youcantapthe"karatechop"pointonyourlefthandandthe
eyebrowpointontherightsideofyourbody.ThismakestheTappingprocessmoreconvenient
toperform.

TheTappingisdonewithtwoormorefingertips.Thisissoyoucancoveralargerareaand
therebyinsurethatyourTappingcoversthecorrectpoint.

Whileyoucantapwiththefingertipsofeitherhand,mostpeopleusetheirdominanthand.For
example,righthandedpeopletapwiththefingertipsoftheirrighthandwhilelefthandedpeople
tapwiththefingertipsoftheirlefthand.

Youtapapproximately5timesoneachpoint.Noneedtocountthetapsbecauseanywhere
between3and7tapsoneachpointisadequate.TheonlyexceptionisduringtheSetupstep
(explainedlater)wheretheKarateChopPointistappedcontinuouslywhileyourepeatsome
standardwording.

Theprocessiseasilymemorized.AfteryouhavetappedtheKarateChopPoint,therestofthe
pointsgodownthebody(seetheSequencePointsinthediagramabove).TheEyebrowpoint,
forexample,isbelowtheTopoftheHeadpoint.TheSideoftheEyepointisbelowtheEyebrow
point.Andsoondownthebody.

The5StepsofTheEFTTappingBasicRecipe
Thesesimplestepsarealsogiveninthevideobelow.Fornow,justfamiliarizeyourselfwiththeconcepts.
ThevideowillwalkyouthroughthisTappingprocesssoyoucanmemorizeiteasily.

1.IdentifytheIssue:
Allyoudohereismakeamentalnoteofwhatailsyou.Thisbecomesthetargetatwhichyou"aim"the
EFTTappingBasicRecipe.Examplesmightbe:Soreshoulder,myfatherembarrassingmeatmyage8
birthdaypartyorhittingthathighsingingnote.Besureyouareonlytargetingoneissueatatime.Asyou
willlearnlater,tryingtocombineissuesintheprocesswillcompromiseyourresults.

2.TesttheInitialIntensity:
Hereyouestablishabeforeleveloftheissue'sintensitybyassigninganumbertoitona010scalewhere
10istheworsttheissuehaseverbeenand0isnoproblemwhatsoever.Thisservesasabenchmarksowe

cancompareourprogressaftereachroundofTheEFTTappingBasicRecipe.If,forexample,westartat
an8andeventuallyreacha4,thenweknowwehaveachieveda50%improvement.Thenumberof
possibleissueswecanaddresswithTheEFTTappingBasicRecipeisendlessandtheydon'tallfitinto

Important,Important,Important:
Thelanguagethatweusealwaysaimsatthenegative.Thisisessentialbecauseitisthenegativethat
createstheenergydisruptions(zzzzzts)thatTheEFTTappingBasicRecipeclears(andthusbringspeace
tothesystem).Bycontrast,conventionalmethodsandpopularselfhelpbooksstresspositivethinking
andpreachavoidingthenegative.Thissoundsgoodbut,forourpurposes,itdoeslittlemorethancover
overthenegativewithpleasantsoundingwords.EFT,ontheotherhand,needstoaimatthenegativesoit
canbeneutralized.Thisallowsournaturalpositivestobubbleuptothetop.

Asyounowknow,themostfundamentalconceptwithinGoldStandardEFTisasfollows:
Breaktheissueintosmallerparts,andaddress

Aslongasyoustillhavetheoverallissue,therearestillAspectswithintheEFTTappingProcessto
resolve.YoualreadyknowhowtospotanAspect,andyouknowhowBeingSpecificcanhelpyoufind
newones,butthereisonefinalpiecetothepuzzleandthatisTestingyourResults.

Wecanevaluatetheintensityofanissuefrom010aswesitinthelivingroom,butuntilweactually
challengethosemeasurements,theremaybeAspectsthathavebeenoverlooked.Thebestwaytotest
yourresultsistoputyourselfintheactualsituationthatwouldtriggeryourissueandseeifanyofit
comesback.Asyoumayremember,afteraddressingDavesFearofWaterintheFindingAspectswithin
theEFTTappingProcessarticle,Inotonlyputhiminthepool,butIaskedhimtodunkhishead,and
foundplentyofnewAspectsalongtheway.IalsotookRichouttothebalconytotesthisfearofheights
andaskedhimtoimagineotherscenariosthatmighttriggerhisintensity.Wehavealreadysuggestedthat
youputyourselfinsituationsthatwouldtestyourownissueslikefearofpublicspeaking,socialanxiety,

address.Testingyourresultsisamatteroffindingwaystotriggertheissuetoreallyseewhatsleft.As
youwillfind,thiskindoftestingplaysanimportantrolethroughouttheprocess.Why?Becauseeven
thoughitcanseemlikealltheAspectsareclear,mosttestingeffortsdorevealnewones.Eventuallyyou
willseeTestingasawaytogetbetterresults,ratherthanjustawaytoconfirmthatyouaredone.

The EFT Tapping Triad

confirmingthatourworkiscomplete.

TestingyourEFTworkletsyouknowwhereyouareintheTappingprocess.Itislikeacompassthat
keepsyouoncourseandisanessentialtoolforqualitywork.That'swhyIbuiltthefundamental010
testingscaleintoTheEFTTappingBasicRecipe.
CompleteworkwithEFTmeansfindingalltheAspectsofanissueeventhoughtheyareoftenhidden
belowthesurface,evenoutsideawareness.ProperTesting,whichwewillexploreinthisarticle,candig
upandidentifythosehiddenAspectsthatoccurduringtheTappingprocess.Itisamandatoryfeatureof
EFTandshouldbecomeahabit.YoumayevenconsideritanobligationasIdo.
Infact,ifyoudon'tTestwithgreatregularityyouwilloftenfindyourselfinthedarkwithoutknowingit.

NotonlyisTestingthemainwaytouncoverAspectsbutitalsoprovidessimplebridgestomanyofthe
othervitalTappingtoolsthatyouwilllearninsubsequentarticles.Thisopensevenmoredoorsthatlead

Evaluating Tapping Results with The 0-10 Scale


Youruseofthe010intensityscalehasbeenbasicsofar,andhereisareview.

1. Establish the beginning 0-10 intensity of the issue.


2. As new Aspects come up, you assess their individual intensities
and continue with Tapping rounds of The Basic Recipe on each
one until they all appear to be gone.
3. As long as there is intensity, you know there are more aspects
to find.

4. When all Aspects seem to be resolved, you assess a new 0-10


number for the overall issue and see if there is anything left.

You will not always be accurate in your 0-10 assessment.


Accordingly, we use these numbers as a benchmark so we can
compare before and after intensities. If an issue went from an 8
to a 4, for example, we can conclude that the intensity dropped
approximately in half. We are not concerned about the absolute
accuracy of the 8 or the 4.
Many people are aware of this inaccuracy and feel pressure to
do it right. You can release that pressure by simply asking
yourself to estimate a number. This can bring an element of
relaxation to the process for some Tapping students.

Sometimes, when you are at or near 0 on your issue, you may


tend to overstate the 0-10 number. For example, you may be at
a 0 or 1 but may assess the intensity at a 3 or 4. This is often
done subconsciously because (1) you may never have been this
low before and dont really know what it feels like to be at or
near zero, (2) at some level you may not believe youve actually
achieved this relief or (3) you may not believe it will last so you
"hedge your bets" with an inaccurate number.
With experience, you will develop a good sense for when you
are doing this. In such cases you can ask yourself, How do I
know I'm not a zero? This is often an eye opening question and
can bring clarity to your Tapping progress.

Consider what you are Testing. If an issue can have more than
one Aspect, and those Aspects each have their own degree of
emotional intensity, then when you assess a rating from 0-10,
you need to be aware of what youre evaluating. Are you rating
the whole issue which can be seen as a container of Aspects? Or
are you evaluating one piece, or Aspect, of the issue? It is useful
to use the 0-10 intensity scale in both cases, but the answer will
be much more meaningful if you consider what you are
evaluating.

Challenging Your Zeros

WhenyoufeellikeyouhavereachedazeroofintensityonalloftheAspectsthatyoucanfindonthe
issue,itstimetoputthoseresultstoatestandseeifthezerosarereallyzeros.Hereareafewsimple
waystodothat.

Test in the real situation when possible:


ThisistheidealtestbecauseitprovidesthehighestlikelihoodforexposingremainingAspectsorrelated
issues.WhileimagininganissuecangoalongwaytowardTestingyourTappingprogress,putting
yourselfinarealsituationwilloftenpresentAspectsyoucouldnthaveanticipated.Examplesofthis
wouldbe(1)Testingtheangeryoumayhavetowardanabusiveparentbyactuallymeetingwiththe
abuser,(2)Performingbasketballfreethrowsunderintensesituationsinarealgameor(3)Testingyour
resultwithafearofheightsbylookingdownfromatallbuilding.
Testingwiththismethodisillustratedinthefollowingvideoclips.ThefirstoneiswithMarywhosehead
injurygaveheranintensereactiontolights.Thelongerone,withPatricia,allowsmetoactuallytesther
"socialineptness"whileperformingEFTintherealsituation(afterwehadaddressedrelatedSpecific

Obviously,itisnotalwayspossibletoTestintherealsituation,soyoucanalsotrytheothermethods
below.

Vivid Visualization:
Onthesurface,thismayseemselfexplanatory.Thegeneralideaistovividlyimaginetheissueorevent
inyourmind...turnupthevolume,makeeverythingbigger,exaggerateallthesights,sounds,colorsand
sizesandreallyTRYtogetyourselfupsetaboutit.Onceyousucceed,youhaveanewaspect(s)to
address.
However,manypeopleareafraidtodothisbecausetheydontwanttoexperiencethepaintheythink
maybethere.TheymayhavemadegreatTappingprogresssofarwithEFTbutaresometimesconcerned
thatthisTestingmethodwillrunthemheadlongintopossiblepain(eventhoughweareexpectinglittleor
nonetobethere).
Accordingly,manypeopledontreallyvividlyimaginetheissue.Instead,theytendtoclosetheireyes
andtiptoelightlyoverit.ThisisNOTagoodtest.ThatswhyIgivespecificinstructionsasclearly
showninthisnextvideoshowingtwoexamples:PamelaandKim.Noticethatweusetheprocessto
activelylookforremnantsoftheissuethathavenotyetbeenaddressed.

Use Props:
HereweTestusingphotos,memorabilia,sounds,moviesandthelike.Thisisparticularlyusefulasa
substituteforthosetimeswhenTestingintherealsituationisnotpossible.Theideahereistotrigger
emotionalissuesandobservewhataspectsorrelatedchallengesarise.Forexample,youmight(1)viewa
photoofadeceasedlovedonetotestyourlevelofgrief,(2)playthesoundsofgunfireorhelicoptersto
Testthetraumaticresponsetowar/abuse,or(3)viewthesnakesceneinthemovieRaidersoftheLost
ArkifyouwishtoTestyourTappingprogressregardingafearofsnakes.
IonceusedarecordedTVseriesasaproptohelpRobert,a52yearoldAfricanAmericanman,withhis
poorselfimagearoundbeingblack.HisinadequatefeelingsconsistentlyimprovedthroughourEFT
phonesessionsUNTILITestedourresultsbyaskinghimtowatchROOTS,theTVseriesaboutblack
