THE CIRCUMCISION
OF OUR
Today we celebrate the Great Feast of the Circumcision of Christ and also
the New Year according to the Julian Calendar and the
Commemoration of Saint Basil the Great of Caesarea in Cappadocia.
The Feast of the Circumcision of Christ is connected to an absolutely
concrete Event.
According to the Old Covenant Law, on the Eighth Day after the birth of a
male infant the Circumcision of the foreskin had to be performed in
commemoration of the Holy Covenant between God and St Abraham,
the ancient Patriarch.
Of course, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Son of God, did not need
Circumcision. His Divine Mission to Save all humanity far exceeded
everything that St Abraham and all Righteous men had done
including those who had lived before and after the Nativity of Christ.
No Circumcision could increase or decrease the importance of this Mission.
Our Lord Jesus Christ accepted Circumcision, which makes us contemplate
the importance of the Rite and religious custom.
Circumcision was an Old Covenant Rite and a visible Sign according to
which Hebrew men confirmed their connection to God and St Abraham.
However, not all those who had been Circumcised remained true to the
Divine Commandments, which God had given to St Abraham, for Christ
our Lord exposed the Scribes, the Pharisees and others as being
hypocrites who carefully fulfilled all required Hebrew customs but in
their hearts they were alienated from God and practically violated the
Divine Covenant between God and St Abraham.
Thus, Circumcision did not prevent any man from committing bad deeds even while seeming to fulfil the Old Covenant Law.
Our Lord Jesus Christ accepted Circumcision so that we could correctly
understand the difference between religious custom and religious Rite.
All of us - having a body, feeling, mind, sight, intellect, smell, touch - live in
this world and the necessities of our soul are often physically fufilled,
because there is no other way of doing so.
We can express and show ourselves through the actions of our body - the
movement of mind and will - and we also discover religious feeling
and/or religious life physically.
For example, we all attend Church today. Each of us got up this morning
and got washed and dressed before coming to this Holy Temple. As we
entered this church, we Blessed ourselves with the Sign of the Cross and
bowed down before the Lord our God. We lit our candles, said our
Prayers and waited for the Holy Services to begin.
Throughout theses Holy Services we participate vocally and by making the
Sign of the Cross and bowing. Each time we do so, we are making a
clear Declaration to God: I worship Thee, O Lord, with all my mind,
with all my heart, with all my Strength and with all my soul.
This is how we express our Spiritual Movements - the physical movements
or manifestation of our heart and soul.
But there is some danger in all this.
In the consciousness of those who have insufficient Spiritual Enlightenment,
those who seldom read the Word of God or Patristic Writings, and those
who never contemplate their Faith or the Divine Truth of Christ, but who
simply attend Church, a dangerous and incorrect attitude to the Sacred
Rites is often formed.

THE DIVINE LITURGY OF ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOM BEGINS IMMEDIATELY
Such people erroneously think that the mere fulfilment of the Sacred Rites
will Save us and therefore we need not do anything more than make
various empty gestures that might impress a casual observer.
Nevertheless, even while attending the Holy Services, we can also cause
offence to our neighbours by means of our attitude, our behaviour and
our manner of attire.
Therefore, thinking that by attending Holy Services we are automatically
Saved is a most dangerous delusion and a sin!
Some think that by lighting candles and making the Sign of the Cross
without any Prayers or Purpose, will automatically reap Divine Rewards
for ourselves. But this could not be further from the Truth!
We cannot receive anything from God automatically, for He grants us His
Divine Grace and His Divine Power according to our own Faith, Good
Deeds, Spiritual Understanding and Wisdom according to our Spiritual
Struggles and Sacred Endeavours.
Only Gods Divine Grace and Power can actually Save us, for it is only
thereby that our Repented sins are conquered, for there is no human
effort possible, nor are there any formal fulfilments of Religious Rules or
Rites that can overcome our sins.
By attracting Gods Divine Grace, we are able to share our Blessings with
others, for we are compelled or driven by our Love for God to fulfil
whatever He requires of us.
God never forces His Divine Will upon us but once we receive His Divine
Grace in abundance, our only desire is to share our Love, Joy,
Knowledge, Wisdom and Understanding with everyone else.
May God help every one of us to increase in Faith, Divine Truth and Piety,
so that we attend all the Holy Services with absolute Understanding and
Appreciation.
May we be compelled by our Love of God to fulfil all His Teachings and
Commandments and to worship Him with all due Reverence, Humility,
Obedience and Thanksgiving.
May we seek everything that is of benefit to our immortal soul, and may we
constantly contemplate our Faith, read the Word of God and edify
ourselves with all our Lords Profound, Divine Wisdom and Truth so that
our practical Life in Christ is always Guided and Guarded by His Divine
Truth, Faith, Prayer and Good Deeds, which draw the Blessings and
Wonders of Divine Grace.

Please note:
1. The Tonsuring that occurs immediately after our Baptism and Chrismation is also
referred to as the New (Bloodless) Circumcision, for the Priest cuts small pieces
of our hair in the form of a Cross, which is all we are able to offer to God tiny
fragments of ourselves.
2. The Incarnate, Eternal Son of God the God-Man fulfilled all the Old Covenant
requirements of Mosaic Law. He showed us by His own Perfect Example how
to obey all Gods Commandments and Teachings.
3. The New Covenant is a bloodless Covenant.
4. The Passion of Christ - when His Precious Blood was shed for the sake of our sins
for all the sins of all humanity for all time was the Final, Most Perfect and
Ultimate Blood Sacrifice that fulfilled all necessity for further Blood Sacrifices for
our sins. i.e. Christ was the Offerer and the Offering, which ensures that we no
longer have to make any type of Blood Offerings to God.
