We all have a story to tell, and my story is the phenomenon responsible for the transformed

person I have become. Although the turmoil and chaos of the past have undoubtedly affected me
and have had the potential to hinder my progress and improvement, I have not allowed it to
consume me or define my worth or abilities. The predicaments I have been placed in were
evaluations served by the universe itself to confirm my resilient character, and they have molded
me into the dynamic person I am today. The hardships I have encountered and endured have
prepared me for my future. As I embark upon forthcoming endeavors, constantly pursuing
success and seeking purpose, I will reflect on my personal advancements and my development as
a person who will only settle for the best.
In March 2011, my father was unexpectedly incarcerated. This incident caused my family and
me to be evicted from our apartment and left homeless. Due to this traumatic event, my mother
suffered from a psychotic break and was immediately hospitalized. Abandoned, I was ordered to
live at a friends house until this disorder was resolved.
Several months passed by; still, my father remained in prison without conviction. My mother
stayed in a mental institute to recover, and I was transferred to another house momentarily.
Eventually, my mother regained her visitation rights of me; simultaneously, my temporary
guardians were unable to deliver further care. Therefore, my mother was pressed to find a stable
home environment and demonstrate she was mentally capable of providing care. Social services
certified this, and my mother repossessed custody.
However, a new issue arose despite the victory my mother achieved. Since my father was the
main source of income for my family, and my mother did not have the financial means to
purchase housing in Richmond, social services was concerned for my well-being. After an
extensive meeting with social services to discuss a course of action, it was decided that it was in
my familys best interest to move to Fredericksburg to live with my grandmother. Little did I
know, moving to Fredericksburg was going to be the turning point in my life, and it would
change my life for the better.
When I initially moved here in grade eight, I did not have that mentality. I found fitting in more
challenging than I previously thought. I was bullied, ostracized, humiliated, and set up for
failure; yet, I continued to prove my character and value through persistence. I was determined to
rise above hostility and discouragement without lowering myself to the standards of others.
Surpassing and excelling above the average standards and criteria, I have maintained a 4.0 grade
point average throughout my entire high school career regardless of the circumstances and
hardships. I have additionally received distinguished honors during my four year that have

portrayed my academic excellence such as becoming a James Monroe Scholar and attaining
Principals Honor Roll.
As I persevered through unremitting hard times, I became adamant about representing my
aptitude and illustrating that I had what it took to be a leader. I auditioned to be drum major for
the James Monroe Marching Yellow Jackets and obtained the position for the 2014-2015
seasons. I was presented esteemed recognitions such as a student officer certificate and the
National School Marching Award.
I believe that my misfortunes have equipped me for the future because these experiences have
shaped my life and the person I am by teaching me diligence based on strong work ethic,
independence, and motivation. My trials and tribulations have instilled an indestructible
motivation in me, and I am certain this motivation will aid me in contributing all I can to any
college I attend as I rise above to fulfill my maximum potential.
