Bioscrypt - Application Note - 4G Lite as a 2G/3G replacement

Application Note
4G Lite as a 2G/3G replacement
With the end of life of the MV1200 (2G) & MV1610 (3G) products the 4G Lite series became the
official replacement for the product. SecureAdmin is the administration software to use for mixed
networks and a Firmware release is available to enable the 4G Lite devices to be run in a mixed
network of 2G & 3G products.

Replacement Matrix
The table below gives the 4G Lite product to be used as a replacement for a 2G or 3G product.
2G & 3G Devices

Replacement 4G Lite product

V-Flex, V-Pass & V-Pass-FX

4G V-Flex Lite Base (S)

V-Prox

4G V-Flex Lite (S,P)

V-Smart iClass & V-Smart Mifare

4G V-Flex Lite (S,O)

V-Station Base

4G V-Station Lite (S)

V-Station Prox

4G V-Station Lite (S,P)

V-Station iClass & V-Station Mifare

4G V-Station Lite (S,O)

Requirements
The following are requirements for running a mixed installation of 2G, 3G and 4G Lite products.
1. SecureAdmin version 4.1.14 or newer is to be used as the Administration software for
the mixed installation.
2. FW 4.6.x firmware needs to be loaded on the 4G Lite device to enable it to be used in a
mixed network environment. Only 4G Lite devices with the Wiegand Option are
supported.

Registering 4G Lites in SecureAdmin

For a 4G Lite product to be registered in SecureAdmin it needs to be using a Firmware version of
4.4.4 or newer.
If the Firmware version on the 4G Lite is version 4.4.3 or older then the firmware on the 4G Lite
reader has to be upgraded to FW 4.4.4 or newer using SecureAdmin Lite.
A 4G Lite device with 4.4.4 or newer firmware can only be registered in SecureAdmin to enable the
upgrade process to 4.6.x firmware.
Once the 4G Lite device is registered in SecureAdmin go to Tools -> Firmware Upgrade and follow
the steps to upgrade the Firmware on the 4G Lite device to 4.6.x.

Quick and Advanced enrolment
Template Broadcast
Template Management
Transaction Log (V-Station only)
Functionality that SecureAdmin wont support and requires VeriAdmin:
Device Settings
Reset to Factory Defaults
Smart Card Manager
FW Upgrade
Clock (V-Station only)
Ethernet (V-Station only)

4G Lite functionality not supported by 2G & 3G products

When running a mixed network of 4G Lite, 2G & 3G readers the following features are supported
by the 4G Lite product but not supported by the 2G & 3G products.
Single Door Access Control capability.
Template User modes Prox & Smart card user modes (Card Only, Finger only etc)
Extended Template settings Template expiry date
Device Access Rules setting global access rules

4G Lite FW 4.6.x Template support

.vur 1:1 verification template
.tms 1:500 searching template
The 4G Lite will not support the 1:200 searching ( .mtm) template format. It is strongly advised the

4G Lite with a Lantronix UDS1100 Ethernet to Serial Converter

The Lantronix UDS1100 was the recommended product to enable the 2G & 3G devices without
Ethernet connectivity (non V-Station products) to use the Ethernet for communication. The 4G Lite
& SecureAdmin product communicate differently to the 2G & 3G products when using a Lantronix
UDS-1100 converter.
Only RS485 can be used on the 4G Lite product, if the 2G or 3G product was previously using
RS232 for communication then the configuration of the Lantronix UDS1100 will have to be
changed.
Our recommendations are
If there is only one reader connected to the RS485 network on the Lantronix UDS1100
converter and this is a 4G Lite then communicate directly to the 4G Lite device by TCP/IP.
If there are multiple devices connected to the RS485 network on the Lantronix UDS1100
converter and these are mixtures of 4G Lite and 2G or 3G then the Com Port Redirector
software will have to be used. The readers will then have to be registered in SecureAdmin
as if they were connected to a Serial Com port.
If there are multiple devices connected to the RS485 network on the Lantronix UDS1100
converter and these are all 4G Lite devices then you will see a performance improvement
of template transfer etc if the Lantronix UDS1100 was replaced by a Network Switch and
TCP/IP communication was used directly to the 4G Lite devices.
