4. Characteristics of the controller

possibility of smooth adjustment of the furnace power within the range from 17 to 33kW,
protection against furnace overheating,
protection against oil overflow in the furnace,
automatic maintenance of settings at supply voltage decay.
5. Safety aspects
MTM 17-33 universal oil-fired heater is supplied from 230V, 50Hz alternating current mains. The heater
is equipped with two bimetallic sensors ensuring safe and economical operation of the heater.
The bimetallic sensor located in the furnace chamber reacts by closing contacts when the furnace
temperature exceeds 40C and by opening contacts when the temperature drops below 35C. In emergency
situations (overheating, oil overflow) the processor checks the signal from the bimetallic sensor and switches on
the exhaust fan until the furnace is cooled down to a temperature below 35C.
The other bimetallic sensor is located near the air supply fan. Its threshold temperature is 100C.
Opening of its contacts, in consequence of exceeding the threshold temperature, causes immediate switchover
of the furnace to the Overheating mode (see point 8 of this manual).
The heater is also equipped with a balance sensor placed below the overflow tank (so-called overflow
safety device).
Filling of the tank causes immediate switchover of the furnace to the Overflow mode (see point 8 of this
manual).
The connection of the control panel of the furnace with other elements of the system (sensors, pump, fan)
is made by the manufacturer. In the course of normal operation, due to the operation safety, it is absolutely not
allowed to interfere in any way in the covered and sealed part of the furnace controller and to infringe on the
integrity of conductors. Any action by an unauthorised person creates a risk of electric shock (230V AC, 50Hz)
and burning injury.

7. Installation of the heater

Familiarize with applicable local regulations.

Position the furnace on a flat concrete base.
Level the heater. In order to check whether the heater is levelled, place the furnace pan in the lower part
of the combustion chamber and pour a small amount of diesel oil on it.
The oil should spread accurately in the middle of the pan.
Mount the draught stabiliser on the pipe coming out from the combustion chamber in order to ensure
stable draught inside the pipe during the heater operation.
In order to ensure the optimal draught, install a vertical chimney pipe (not made of aluminium) which is
at least 6 meters long, smooth and resistant to high temperature.
Check leakproofness of all connections, seal them with insulation tape if necessary.
Make sure that the combustion pan is located centrally in the combustion chamber.
Place the deflector inside the combustion chamber (the edging in the middle of the deflector should be
directed upward) and mount an afterburner cylinder on it.
Check the mains voltage (220-240V/50Hz) and connect the furnace to power supply, neither the fan nor
the pump should start automatically as the furnace has not been switched on yet and no heat has been
produced.

Installation of the chimney pipe

A properly made chimney system is necessary in order to ensure proper combustion
The following recommendations must be followed while making the chimney system:
- pipe diameter should be 150 mm,
- leakproofness of connections between the chimney elements should be checked,
- minimum chimney height is 5 m,
- the section of the chimney inside the chimney should be insulated (double wall),
- the wind should freely blow around the chimney outlet from all directions (the end of the chimney pipe
should be located approximately 1 m above the roof top,
- if possible, all the chimney section should be vertical; avoid horizontal sections as well as bends of the
chimney pipe, if chimney pipe bends are necessary (e.g. two bends in case the pipe is run through the
wall or window), then the maximum deflection angle must not exceed 45, and the minimum chimney
height should be increased up to 7 m.
ATTENTION
While installing the combustion gas evacuation system, avoid installing the chimney pipe sections in
horizontal configuration. In order to ensure free outflow of combustion gases, the angle of a possible pipe
bend should not be greater than 45. The chimney outlet must be located above the roof top, optimally about
1 m above the roof top.
The places where the chimney runs through the ceiling, walls or roof must be insulated to avoid fire hazard. It
is recommended to use the double wall insulated chimney pipe in all places where there is a possibility of
touch contact, as well as outside the building, in order to ensure permanent good draught and prevent
condensation. Do not place any materials near the furnace, even the non-flammable ones. Ensure permanent
supply of air necessary for proper combustion process.

The heat generation process involves combustion of gas which is produced by oil heated to a high
temperature. The heater connected to the mains is in the readiness state (Stop) and no heat is produced,
neither the fan nor the pump is operating. When Start push-button is pressed, the green diode lights up and the
furnace goes to the firing up phase. After the furnace is heated to the temperature of 40C, the contacts of the
thermostat placed next to the combustion chamber are closed and the oil supply pump and the air supply fan
are switched on. Due to smaller oil demand of unheated furnace, the heater will operate at the lowest power
level for at least 30 minutes. During this period the pump supplies approximately 1.7 litre of oil to the furnace.
After thirty minutes of operation, the power of the heater can be regulated using the power adjustment
knob located on the controller's panel. During operation of the heater at the highest power level, about 3.3 litre
of oil is supplied to the furnace.
The heater is switched off by pressing Stop push-button on the control panel.
The heater is switched off at the moment of pressing the push-button. The exhaust fan operates until the
furnace temperature is lower than 35 C (Extinguishing). When a temperature lower than 35C is reached, the
furnace returns to Stop phase.
The furnace may be switched off automatically in the following cases:
- overheating of the combustion chamber
- overflow

The overheating signal is generated by the bimetallic sensor located near the fan. Opening of the contacts
signals that the threshold temperature is exceeded. The control system switches off the pump (the pump
operation indicator (green diode) is extinguished); the overheating status is signalled by the red diode which
lights up on the control panel. The exhaust fan operates until the furnace temperature drops below 35C. When
a temperature lower than 35C is reached, the furnace returns to Stop phase.
After switching to Stop phase (and even after switching off and then again switching on the power supply)
the overheating signal is still on. This enables the user to determine the cause of switching off the furnace.
In order to clear the overheating signal and return to normal operation, wait until the furnace is cooled
down (the fan is switched off) and press the push-button placed on the bimetallic sensor housing. Then, press
Start push-button. The diode which signals overheating will extinguish. The furnace may be restarted.
The overflow signal is generated by the mechanical sensor placed under the overflow tank. The opening of
the contacts signals overfilling of the tank. At the same time, the pump is switched off. The pump operation
indicator (green diode) extinguishes and the relevant red diode lights up in order to indicate overfilling. The
exhaust fan operates until the furnace temperature drops below 35C. After reaching a temperature lower than
35C, the furnace returns to Stop phase. Empty the overflow tank and press Start push-button. The diode which
signals overflowing (red diode) will extinguish. The furnace may be restarted.

ATTENTION!!!
YOU MUST NOT ADD OIL TO THE FURNACE AND FIRE IT UP WHEN THE CHAMBER
OR PAN OF THE FURNACE IS STILL HOT!!!
ALWAYS WAIT UNTIL THE FURNACE PLATE IS TOTALLY COOLED DOWN.
FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE ABOVE-MENTIONED RECOMMENDATION
CREATES RISK OF UNCONTROLLED IGNITION OF OIL VAPOURS AND RISK OF
BURNING INJURY!!!

Starting the heater.

After start-up, the heater goes through the respective operating conditions depending on the settings
introduced by the user and the information received by the sensors attached to the controller system.

if necessary, drain water from the fuel tank and fill the tank with oil (e.g. used oil),
check whether the overflow protection mechanism operates correctly by pushing the pan's lever down
and checking whether it returns automatically to its original position; the return of the lever is confirmed
by a characteristic click sound,
check whether the heaters burner is maximally pushed to the housing of the heater (if not, push the
burner to its proper position),
insert the plug of the power cable into the mains socket (230V/50Hz),
open the top part of the heater housing and remove the cover of the combustion chamber, then take
out the cylinder and deflector (if necessary, clean thoroughly the combustion pan and base on which it is
placed and clean also the whole combustion chamber including the sleeve and deflector),
check whether the furnace pan is cool and clean, then pour about 250 ml of fuel oil or diesel oil on it,
fire the oil, using a piece of paper which is crumpled into a ball for this purpose; the piece of paper must
be set on fire and thrown onto the furnace pan,
mount the deflector and the cylinder, replace the combustion chamber cover, close the top part of the
heater housing,
press Start push-button on the control panel (the green diode will light up),
after approximately 10-15 minutes (depending on temperature in the room), the fuel pump and the fan
will be switched on, the furnace will start operating at the lowest power level, regardless of the position
of the power adjustment knob (17 kW; oil combustion of approximately 1.7 l/h), after 30 minutes, the
heater power can be adjusted by means of the power adjustment knob.

If the power adjustment knob is set in a different position than the minimum position during start-up of the
heater, after 30 minutes the heater will automatically start operating at the power level set, according to the
power adjustment knob indication.
Each pressing of Stop push-button and restarting the furnace by pressing Start push-button during the
furnace operation will initiate the firing up phase.
Switching off the heater
press Stop push-button on the control panel (the green diode extinguishes), the pump stops supplying
fuel onto the combustion pan, the fan operates until the furnace is cooled down.

DO NOT!!! disconnect the heater from the mains when the fan is in operation! Wait until the furnace is cooled
down. The furnace is switched off automatically. Remember that after the heater is switched off, the pan
made of cast iron still maintains a higher temperature for some time (depending on ambient temperature)
and the furnace must not be fired up again until the pan is completely cooled down!
DO NOT!!! throw the hot pan into snow and do not pour cold water on it in order to accelerate cooling down.
Otherwise, due to a large temperature difference, the hot pan will break and become useless!!!

Maintenance
The heater requires little maintenance activities. The observance of manufacturers recommendations
concerning maintenance will ensure failure-free and safe operation of the heater:
- clean the furnace pan and other elements of the combustion chamber (cylinder, deflector and cover)
daily,
- confirm that the overflow tube is not blocked (the tube in the lower part of the combustion chamber,
directly over the overflow pan), clean it if necessary,
- clean the combustion chamber base (the element under the furnace pan) at least once a week,
- confirm that the air inlet openings in the bottom and the top part of the combustion chamber are not
covered,
- at least once a week, clean the conduit supplying oil onto the furnace pan, the maximum time of
operation without cleaning the furnace pan is about 7-14 hours (depending on type of oil used for
combustion),
- during the heating season, clean the fuel tank and the oil pump filter,
- if the furnace is to be out of operation for a longer period of time, thoroughly clean the combustion
chamber and the daily tank and protect them against corrosion by coating them with a thin film of oil.

PERIODICAL MAINTENANCE SURVEYS ARE RECOMMENDED TO BE PERFORMED BY AN

AUTHORIZED SERVICE
