Explain High Cycle and Low Cycle Fatigue

b.

A cantilever shaft is subjected to a load of F Newton (up) and 3F Newton (down) as shown
in Fig1. The length of the shaft is 150mm. The fillet section is at a distance of 25mm from
the fixed end. Determine the maximum load that the member can withstand for infinite life.
Assume the theoretical stress concentration factor as 1.42 and Notch sensitivity of 0.9. The
material is cold drawn C26 steel for which y = 470 MPa, en = 275MPa. Take B = 0.85,
C = 0.89 & FOS =2.0

A steel shaft with y = 309.9 MPa, 1.5 m long between bearings carries a 1kN pulley at its
midpoint. The pulley is keyed to the shaft and receives 20kW power at 200 rpm. The belt
drive is horizontal and ratio of belt tensions is 3:1. The diameter of pulley is 600mm.
Calculate the necessary shaft diameter. Take Cm = 1.75; Ct = 1.25 and FOS = 2.0 Draw
Bending Moment diagrams.

Design a rigid flange coupling to transmit18kW at 1440 rpm. The shaft and bolts are made
of annealed steel having allowable shear stress of 93 MPa.

With a neat sketch, derive an expression for stresses in helical springs of circular wire.

A semi-elliptical leaf spring used for automotive suspension consists of three extra fulllength leaves and fifteen graduated leaves. The center to center distance between two
eyes of the springs is 1m. The maximum force acting on the spring is 75 kN. The ratio of
width to thickness is 9:1. The modulus of elasticity of leaf material is 207000 N/mm2. The
maximum stress induced in the full length leaves is 450 N/mm2. Determine

It is required to design a helical compression spring for the valve mechanism. The axial
force acting on the spring is 300N when the valve is open and 150N when the valve is
closed. The length of the spring is 30mm when the valve is open and 35mm when the valve
is closed. The ultimate tensile strength of the spring material is 1370N/mm2. The
permissible shear stress for the spring wire may be taken as 30% of the ultimate tensile
strength. Assume G = 81.370 GPa. The minimum inside diameter of the spring must be
20mm. Design the spring.
Prove that for the same deflection, the stresses in full length leaves are 50% more than the
graduated leaves.

Design a pair of steel spur gears required to transmit 12kW at 2000 rpm of pinion. The
velocity ratio received is 2.5:1. The allowable static stress for both may be taken as 120 16
MPa. Not less than 24 teeth are to be used on either gear. The teeth are 20 stub involute.

What do you mean by formative no. of teeth in helical gears? Derive the expression for
same.

b.

A helical gear pair is used to transmit 12 kW power at pinion speed of 9000 rpm. The gears
have 45 helix angle and 20stub. The pitch circle diameters of pinion and gear are 75 mm
and 300 mm respectively. Take static stresses for the pinion and gear as 120MPa and
100 MPa respectively. Design the gears for static strength only.

Design a double riveted double cover butt joint with unequal cover plates and zigzag
riveting to connect two plates of 25mm thick. Assume the following
