Anions present in water are as important as
cations as they occur as conjugates. Like cations,
anions also influence the nutrient or toxicity status of
drinking water. Water Research Laboratory at NML,
Jamshedpur is housing a Metrohm 882 compact ion
chromatograph that can analyze both cations and
anions present in drinking water at ppb-ppm level.

Magneticfieldinducedreorientationofthetwinstructuresoccursinaclassofmaterials called
Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys (FSMAs). A well known NiMnGa FSMA, a promising
actuator material is conventionally prepared by crystal growth technique that is not only
expensive and time consuming but involves concern for defect free crystals. In the present
program a rapid solidification route has been adopted whereby NiMnGa alloys have been

High strength Alalloys by semisolid processing: Modification of dendritic structure to
nearly globular one by stirring the alloy in between the solidus and liquidus temperatures
(rheocasting). The alloys were further processed through Straininduced meltactivation to
achievebettermechanicalproperties.
Aluminumalloymatrixcompositeplatesfordefenseapplications:secondaryprocessing of
AlSiC composite plates were carried out by forging and rolling techniques. The problem of
edge cracking and failure of composites was solved to a large extent by optimizing the
homogenizationandheattreatmentschedules.

Closed cell steel and aluminum foams for
automotive and nonload bearing structural
applications: The aim of this program is to develop
sandwich foams, foam filled tubes and small size
foam elements employing powder metallurgy
technique using nonconventional foaming agents and
additivestoachieveuniformandlargesizepores.

This program encompasses R&D activities related to briquetting, pelletization and sintering of
iron ore fines. Normally briquetting is performed on coarser materials using binders and
additivesandisalsocarriedoutonfineconcentratefordifferentminerals.
Conventional pelletisation of the concentrates from hematite and magnetite ores are routinely
carried out. Other investigations include nonconventional pelletization of the concentrates
while incorporating coal, dolomite, lime etc. and minimization of the bentonite dosage. Pre
heating and induration of the pellets through combustion of fuels is an integral part of this
program.
In this program significant activities are focused on conventional sintering of the ore fines at
differentbasicityrangesandincorporationofbluedustandmetallurgicalwastesthroughsinter
mix. Reducing the energy consumption, improvement in quality parameters and productivity
are the targets in this program. Enhanced process of sintering to incorporate ultrafines
(concentrates) through microballing/pelletization followed by sintering is a strength area of
NMLinthisprogram.

Mineral characterization and ore petrographic studies encompass the identification of minerals
present in the ore, their relative abundance, modes of occurrence, structures, textural
relationships and modal distribution in different processing steps. These studies also reveal
quantitativeinsitumineralogicalphasecompositions.Theseareveryimportantandbasicsteps
that are undertaken before processing/beneficiating any kind of ore. From mineral processing
point of view, it is important to identify the ore and gangue minerals present in an ore, study
theirtexturalrelationships, andfindouttheliberation characteristics of the ore. Sometimes it
becomes imperative to know the origin or genesis of the ore and the process of formation in
nature. Thermal behavior of the minerals that plays an important role during their reduction
processes are determined as and when required. These objectives are met through thorough
characterization of the ores by using optical petrological microscopes (both RL and TL), Zoom
Stereo Microscopes, Image Analysis System, XRay Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope
(+WDS/EDAX), Electron Probe MicroAnalyzer, Heating Microscope, TGDTA etc. The petrology

Aboutthisprogram:
Surface and interfacial chemistry examine the chemical processes that occur at the phase boundary
between solid/ solid liquid/ solid, liquid/ liquid and gas/ solid interfaces. Surface chemistry branch
conduct experiments to study the surface of a solid/ liquid and their interfaces before, during and
after reaction. The understanding is used to develop new or improved surfaces, coatings and
materialsfordifferentapplication.Researchprogramincludesmodifyingsurfacetoreducecorrosion,
understanding dynamics on surfaces as they pertain to film deposition, nanomaterial synthesis,

An integrated mineral processing pilot plant was installed in 1962 to study the feasibility of
commercial exploitation of the techniques, process flowsheets and products developed in the
laboratory. Studies have been undertaken on pilot scale research on beneficiation and
agglomeration of ferrous, nonferrous metallic and non metallic ores and coal samples from
varioussources.
