Rankin Audio Mixing and Mastering Racks for

Ableton Live
Instructions and guidance
Please read this information before using our custom built mixing and mastering racks. Here you
will find explanations for all the macro controls found on the racks and guidance to help you better
use them.

RA Group Strip

Overview -The group strip is for use on group channels where you are summing two or more tracks
together.
'EQ Booster'This applies a fairly subtle boost to the fundamental bass frequencies to add sub that
maybe lacking and also a smooth and shallow boost to the higher frequency ranges to add airiness
and clarity.
'Stereo Width' Increases the stereo wideness of the higher frequency content to add space and
increase the size of the mix.
'Sub Cmprssr'Compresses the sub region of your group for a louder bottom end.
'Glue'Uses a Multiband Compressor with low ratio setting to glue the elements in the mix together.
'Saturate'Saturates the mix to add grit and increase perceived volume.

'More Volume' Pushes the mix into a limiter to chop off peaks and increase volume.
'Sub Monoizer' Decreases the stereo width of the bass frequencies, higher settings = less stereo.
The bass is completely mono at the highest setting.

'Lo-Fi'Decreases the bit depth for old skool lo-fi effects.

RA Channel Strip

Overview - The Ra Channel Strip is intended as a general purpose rack to be used on single
channels.

'EQ Tighten'Subtly removes muddy frequencies while enhancing the sub and gently increasing
punchiness and airiness.
'Stereo Width'Increases the stereo wideness of the higher frequency content of the channel without
interefering with the lower frequencies.
'Gate'Cuts off the sound if it is below a certain volume threshold, good for use on rough vocal
recordings or any sound with low volume unwanted noise. A setting of '0' turns the gate off.
'Delay'Uses a sidechain routed compressor to achieve a ducked delay effect. The delay is cut off
when the rack receives an audio input and so avoids messy mixes caused by delay signals
interfering with the original signal.
'Saturate'Saturates the signal for added crunch. Causes distortion if over used.
'Extra Volume'Pushes the signal into a limiter to chop off peaks and increase perceived volume.
'Lo Pass Filter'Lowers the cut off of a low pass filter with an increase in filter resonance as the cut
off decreases. Can be used statically as a simple eq or automated for traditional filtering effects.

'Hi Pass Filter'Removes the low end frequencies with an increase in filter resonance as the cut off
increases. Can be used statically as a simple eq or automated for traditional filtering effects .

RA Mastering Strip

Overview -A useful set of tools for finalising whole mixes, use to increase overall loudness and to
add sheen, depth and bottom to your whole track.
'Stereo Width'Increases the stereo wideness of the higher frequency content without interfering
with the lower frequencies.
'High Boost'Adds brightness to a dull mix.
'Mid Boost'Adds punch and mid-range bite.
'Sub Boost'Compresses the bottom end to add sub frequencies.
'More Volume'Pushes the signal into a limiter to increase the loudness of your track.
'Remove Mud'Applies an eq notch at the frequency range most often associated with muddiness to
help clean up the mix.
'Mix Glue'Adds subtle compression with low ratio settings to help glue the elements in the mix
together.
'Mono Test'A useful tool to mono the whole mix. Hear your track as would soundon a mono
system, a setup used in some sound systems.
