OUR LIBRARY
A PERFECT PLACE TO IGNITE THE YOUNG MINDS
In our country, every village is having temple of Gods and Goddesses. But
ironically
our
ancestors some how ignored the importance
of spreading
knowledge to villages through schools and libraries.
In olden days libraries
served only some privileged classes, as education was denied to lower strata of
people.
Indian population lives in villages. Till recent times the village people have no
easy access to education scientific, technical and literature etc.
According to
Mahatma Gandhijis GRAMA SWARAJYA, it has been an accepted fact that if villages
are developed educationally and economically the country as a whole will prosper.
We are happy to put here that our college as well as our library are playing
a significant role in filling this vacuum in this forsaken rural area, NAGARAM. Our
Library, located in a total rural backdrop, inhabited mostly with scheduled caste and
backward classes people, came into existence in the year 1969. The College and
the library transformed
the educational scenario of this backward area.
The
students of these rural surroundings have got immensely benefited from the
Library. It literally helped to ignite their minds.
The founder Secretary & Correspondent Dr.N.V.Krishna Rao garu and Sri K.
Umavara Murthy garu are the architects of the Library. They are great book lovers
. They are responsible for collection of invaluable books for the library. And also
they donated precious books to the library of their own.
The great philosopher of ancient ages Marcus Tullices Ceciro has opined that
If you have a Library and a garden you have everything you need
The pride of our college infrastructure is our magnificent library building and
the invaluable volumes in it. The Library building stands majestically as a focal
point amidst a beautiful garden with sylvan surroundings. There are numerous
plants encompassing the building from the heat of the scorching sun.
The
flowering plants, the sylvan surroundings and the landscape of the college
campus visible through the glass panels of the library building gives a veritable
feast to the eyes of the readers of the library.
This building was constructed way back in the year 1983 itself at a stupendous
cost of Rs. 13 lakhs. The KCP Ltd.,Vuyyuru, the pioneers in sugar manufacturing, are
the munificent donors
of this magnificent landmark, along with the furniture.
The
chairs and tables are fiber make. The racks are from Godrej and Vinar. We also have
catalogue cabinets and the process of computerization of Library stock has been taken
up by using Soul software. The reading room has capacity to seat 150 readers. The
total plinth area of the building is around 12000 sft. The ground floor is consisting of
reading room, reference room, stock room, issue counter and the Librarians room. The
first floor is also used for the stocks as well as reading room.
The Library has a most unique annexure to it - an Archaeological Museum.
Several photos, portraits of eminent scholars, Literatures , noble personalities and
philanthropists adorning the walls of the reading room, showers inspiration to the
young minds. The noble mission of our library is service oriented. We provide
open access system, audio, video services and display of clippings of different items.
We always guide students and staff in the selection of worthy and right books to
study. We help students during their visit to Museum.
During Lunch session audio is being played to air traditional songs, classical
music and time tested old songs for soothing the minds of students and staff. The

ambience in the library helped to organize various seminars and debates by faculty
for the benefit of students.
Year after year with the cost escalation, finance is becoming a constraint to
procure more books and journals.
Every effort is being made to attend to the
requirements of staff and students within the available resources.
We envision a very hopeful and bright future to the library with more financial
assistance from all spheres and computerization of the library services.

Technical Work:
All the books in the library have been classified according to D.D.C. 18 th
edition. We have adopted card catalogue system. Students are at liberty for selection
of books under open access system and also can utilize card catalogues.
Catalogue cards are divided into three types 1. Author cards 2. Title cards
3. Subject cards. First two types are arranged in alphabetical order. The third type i.e.,
subject cards are arranged in numerical order and the entries are according to their call
number. For author mark, C.A. Cultens
three-figure alphabetical order table, is
being followed.
Open Access System:
We have adopted open access system for the benefit of students for selection
of books and reference work. In the ground floor all kinds of Text books and all science
subject books are available to students. In the afternoon session, students have access
to the first floor, where books relating to Humanities and social sciences are kept.
SERVICES
Reference Service:
As Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, Veteran and father of Library and Information science
believed reference is RAISON DETRE of all Library work, and it is Summum Bonurm
of all services. Students are at liberty to go through reference books of all kinds,
which are kept in the ground floor, and in an exclusive room. Students are being
taught the method of referring Encyclopedias and other reference books.

Documentation Service:
We are collecting important articles of different kinds from News papers and
magazines. The clippings are orderly filed and pasted in categorical manner. We are
glad to put on record that this service has immensely helped the students and staff to
prepare themselves for competitive exams, debates, seminars and also for participation
in competitive events.
Other Services:
We attend to the requirements of our students and staff in providing reference
material and other required information with in our available resources. We provide
useful books and other printed material for the personality development of the students
and to enrich their minds.
We provide material, and advise the students in their
educational and career opportunities.
We are preserving back numbers of college magazines, and important Journals in
bound form. Question papers of previous years are also available for the students in the
reading room.
We introduced recently reprographic service in the library.
The alumni hailing from this region and teachers from surrounding villages are
also being helped to use our library for their academic necessities, with prior permission
of the Principal.
We regularly interact with students to educate and enlighten them whenever
they are in library. We are always at the service of students and staff to guide them
properly for inculcating good reading habits.
Staff:

Smt. V.Sitamaha Lakshmi, M.A., M.L.Sc., is the Librarian from July 2005.
Her
predecessor Sri G.Kutumba Rao, M.A., M.S., retired in June 2003. The other three
members working in the Library are Sri G. Ranga Rao, Sri VVVT Kumar and Sri G. Ratna
Babu.
Budget:
The Library fee being collected from the students every year is very meager, as
most of the students are from economically poor communities. The amount of fee
being collected from each student remains stagnant from many years.
Approximately Fee + overdue fines
-Subscription for newspapers Journals & Magazines -Contingency for stationery & Maintenance etc.

OPINIONS OF ALUMNI
Dr. Dontu Ram Babu, Scientist.
I can share my experiences in this College and relationship with this
College. I passed my X class in Pedapulivarru. Then the teachers and the veterans
of that village, unexpectedly had developed a liking for me. They recommended
me to Dr.Krishna Rao, Secretary & Correspondent of SVRM College, Nagaram. They
requested to give free education to me. Dr. Krishna Rao was convinced and offered
not only free education but also free boarding and lodging in the college hostel.
Being a school teacher, it was difficult to my father to bear the expenditure of the
education. Due to the humanity of Dr.Krishna Rao, I continued my education without
any difficulty. Today what I am is because of the college and because of Dr. NV
Krishna Rao. It gives me a great pride to be able to come and stand here to talk to
all of you.
When I joined this College, I put all my efforts in education. The atmosphere
in this College, while promoting education, didnt give an scope for any other
disturbances. So we educated well and settled well. This should be confirmed by my
colleagues, my seniors and juniors. This college has completed 25 years and
celebrating Silver Jubilee Function. So this is the time to look back and see what the
college has delivered to the society. From that point of view I would like to say that
the college has done a commendable job.
We feel that to come here is to come to our own house. We never cut off the
affection and relation with this college . We often come here and meet the Lecturers.
They greet with affection. We continue our affectionate in the same way. Due to
this affection, we cant cut off the relation with college. Why do we have such an
attachment to this College? What is special about this place? It is not simply the
place, the buildings or just other facilities that we have. Of course they are also
important What is striking here is the academic excellence, the dedication to work
and the feelings and ideas of friendship, fraternity and love that was fostered here

and instilled in us that has made what we are today. In this sense, what is SVRM
College? It is not the buildings. It is these ideals, these principles that represent
the college and the spirit of academic endeavor and all other things that accompany
with it. That is what makes a college. So basically this is the place where our
thinking, our principles and our ideologies are molded and it has laid the foundation for
our life. I am sure many of our old friends will have the same thing to say about it.
Hence, what facilities we are enjoying is only one component. How we utilized
the opportunities and molded our capacities to serve the society is the main thing. We
left this college long ago. We are settled in life. We are playing a certain role in the
society today in what ever capacity we are in. I am talking on behalf of old students.
What are we giving to the society? We must do something significant. That makes
the difference in every bodys life. This is to be the goal of everybodys life. In this
sense, many people are doing what best they can, we were given good foundations
here. We have been trained here with principles of dedication, love, friendship,
brotherhood instilled in us and we have to uphold in our life these principles, take them
forward and try to spread them to the people around them. That only can give
meaning to our life.

K. Rama Raju, Principal, KVR & KVR College, Khajipalem.

This is a holy temple. While I am conducting so many meetings as
Principal, I feel somewhat ecstasy to attend this function. I have learned so
many things from this College.
I learned leadership qualities from our beloved
Principal, Umavaramurthy garu, with that inspiration, I completed in the University
level and won the election. I worked as President for one year. This College has
molded me in an ideal manner.

Myneni Ramamohana Rao, Hyderabad.

I completed Intermediate and B.Com courses in this College during the years
1974-79 . Later I completed my M.Com., in Nagarjuna Varsity. I settled in life in
1982 in Hyderabad as a business man.
I think that the main reason for my success is the training and discipline
which I got here in my early stages. This college has well trained and dedicated
staff. I wish the college can start new courses and give employment opportunities
to the number of students of this area.

Y.Sarada, Hyderabad.
I am Sarada. I belong to 1969 batch i.e., the first batch of this college. Now
I am working as a Headmistress of School in Hyderabad. I felt very happy, when I saw
the notice in the daily. I could not believe in happiness that I had completed 25
years after my college education. Once we recalled the life 25 years ago. We
remembered those golden days. Since that moment, I have been eagerly waiting for
reach here.
Mr. Rambabu has said just before that college means not buildings,
teachers and students. Qualitative improvement is more important than quantitative
improvement. So, we deserve qualitative improvement.
When the college was
started in 1969, we were 10 members in B.A.
Among them, we are three girl
students. At that time, we had good rapport with lecturers. We have a close
association. Principal, at that time, Umavaramurthy garu used to give spontaneous
lecture for 55 minutes out of one hour. We used to feel spell bound. Luckily I am
teaching now X class social studies. I think that my teaching is influenced by my
lecturers.
While saying about this association, they call me old students but still we are
very young. Our memories are very fresh not old. But the effect of time can be seen
on body though not in mind. We still feel that we are the students of this college. We
want to continue association with this college.

We came here with the expectation of a view of our class rooms. But when I
see buildings here, I understand that the entire picture is vanished from our minds.
At that time we had not much infrastructure. But we had learned a lot. Even we feel
proud now to say that we are the students of this college.

I.Veera Babu, Lecturer,SVRM College,Nagaram

I think that main reason for the affinity between the students, staff and
management is the backwardness and remoteness
of this area.
Among the
educated people in this college, 90% people would not have been educated if there
was not this college in this area. To say something about myself.
Due to this
college , I completed my degree at my own village. As far as high school education is
concerned - I used walk for miles daily to go to Dhulipudi. I think that you can
understand, the opportunity which we have. Though this village is very remote,
today you can see educated people all around this village, whether it is
Adavuladeevi or Nizampatnam.

BEST PRACTICES IN OUR COLLEGE

1.

Title of the Practice :

Generation.

Value Based Education to the Rural poor students of first

2.

The Context that required initiation of the practice

Repalle Taluk is not only remote, tucked away to a strip of Eastern Coast
but also it is backward in many respects, notably in education.
In the late
sixties, there were 20 High Schools in this region but not a single college. Every
year about 500 boys and girls would go to places like Guntur, Tenali and
Machalipatnam for college education.
At this juncture Sri Velagapudi
Ramakrishna, the pioneer industrialist of Andhra and native of Bellamvaripalem in
Repalle Taluk and his family gave 28.74 acres of land and buildings at Nagaramn
to start a college for the benefit of the people of his region.
Thus
S.V.R.M.College was started on 21st August 1969 in a remote and sleepy village of
Nagaram consisting of hardly a thousand thatched houses in a forgotten and
backward region of Repalle Taluk, Guntur District, A.P. The impulse behind the
founding of the college is the great principal that every human being has an
inalienable right to develop the full faculties of his personality, through education.

3.

Objectives of the practice

From the inception of the college in 1969, the Management and Staff
understood well, articulated and put into practice the noble intentions of Sri
V.Ramakrishna and his family.
It was their aim not only to have an academic
institution but also to foster values which would shape students into disciplined
and responsible citizens of tomorrow. Also, the founders hope and trust that the
boys and girls who have the opportunity to study here will draw inspiration from

the life of Late Sri V.Ramakrishna and devote themselves to the development of
this great country.
4.

The Practice
The Management believed that only a contended staff could work, create
and sustain a new institution.
So, the recruitment of the staff was done
absolutely on merit and only merit. Also despite the difficult financial position,
without any grant from the Government for seven years, the Management saw
that the promised salaries were paid regularly. This went a long way in satisfying
the staff and created faith in the promises of the management.
Another
important step was that in all matters relating to fixation of seniority, salaries
and increments etc, known as service conditions, the management strictly
implemented the rules and procedures recommended by the Government and
Universities. These two steps, paying salaries regularly and promised amounts
as per rules and regularizing the services with absolute impartiality, made
S.V.R.M.College respectable and projected an image of honesty and trust, both in
the Govt. and University circles.
With a staff contented and faith in the future, the next task was to create
disciplined conditions in the college, without which no worthwhile academic work
is possible.
We have taken certain effective steps in this regard.. First among
the list was that no student denied admission on the basis of caste, creed,
religion or region.
Next in the list was that no student was made to contribute
any donation for any seat.
We organized students union, with student office
bearers. These office bearers were selected on the basis of their performance in
the preceding university examinations.
Rules and regulations and procedures
were drawn and a constitution embodying all these was prepared. So affective
was this device that till today, elections were not held in our college and more
important Students, themselves realized the havoc created by the elections and
never asked for them.
The above two measures, recruitment of teachers on merit, administration
on academic lines created an atmosphere of faith and discipline among the staff
and students.
We took utmost care in conducting the University examinations, absolutely
free from malpractices.
That policy and strict enforcement in practice paid us
handsome results. Then we introduced the periodical tests and saw to it that
teaching is done effectively.
Thus, the ground was prepared carefully and well
for the growth of institution.
In a residential college like ours, a hostel is the
heart of the institution.
From the first year, the management has provided the
students with hostel facilities.
The Deputy wardens look after the discipline and
administration of the hostel. Compulsory study hours are maintained between 6
am to 8 am and 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Two staff members in the staff quarters
by turn visit the hostels during study hours.
The mess charges are on the
dividing basis.
We took great care in making the hostel and its administration
absolutely free from corruption and indiscipline. The efficient and corrupt free
administration of the hostel, convinced the students and we established our
credentials, for honesty and integrity. That was how in these early years, we laid
foundation for the growth of institution on sound lines.

Obstacles faced and strategies adopted to overcome them

It is not as if college never had any problems and troubles, which are
normal to any growing institution of learning with discipline.
Students
agitated against election free campus and honest conduct of examinations.
We plainly told our students, that we do not intend to hold any elections in
the college and at the same time, we made it clear, that full opportunity will
be given to the students to carry on extra-curricular activities. We also
clearly told our students that the malpractices in the examinations lead to
bad name for the institution.
The management and staff faced and

successfully overcome them, imbued as they are with a conviction, that their
institution and their work is an honest service in the cause of poor and
deprived. Students realized the havoc created by the elections and never
asked for them.
Nature too did not spare the college. In November 19 th 1977, the killer
cyclone struck it and destroyed the major portion of our college.
But to the
astonishment of any, with the help of KCP Ltd and others, the college rose like
phoenix of the legends, from the ashes.
New buildings rose, trees were planted
and gardens were laid.
Today the scars of that devastation were no more,
expect in the memory of the students and staff of those years. The old students
of our college also gifted an old students home, a measure of gratitude to the
institution.

Impact of the Practice

Most of the people in Nagaram and surrounding villages were illiterates
without any educational background. They belonged to lower middle class and
weaker sections of society. They thought it was beyond their capacity to provide
higher education to their children. At this juncture, the advent of a degree
college with all requirements made them think differently. They hoped that the
future of their children would be bright by getting higher education from this
institution.
As result hundreds and thousands of youngsters of this area got
graduated from our institution in these 37 years and well settled. Most of them
were the first to have been educated in their faculties.
(a) High School in Nagaram :
When our college started in 1969, there were a
few high schools situated at Dhulipudi, Kuchinapudi, Ullipalem and Gudavalli and
students of Nagaram had to go on foot as they were a few miles distantce from
Nagaram. A wonderful co-incidence took place during our President of Indais
visit to our college to lay foundation for college building which lead to the
establishment of Sri Mathi Rattaiah Memorial High School in Nagaram. Since then
students of Nagaram need not go to any other place for higher education.
b) Sub-Post Office: The only branch post office become sub post office in 1976
when it could not meet the needs of students and common people. This change
improved the postal services to surrounding villages.
c) Telephone facility :
There was a telephone facility for Nagaram when Sugar
Factory was running here.
But the attempts for reviving it after the
establishment of the college were futile. A powerful wireless set was used during
the visit of President of India Sri V.V.Giri.
By continuous efforts of Sri
S.Madhusudana Rao, NSS Officer of our college telegraph facility was provided to
sub-post office. In course of time, telephone exchange was sanctioned and in
1993 S.T.D. facility was also provided.
At present about 1500 phones are
working establishing connection between this villages and other areas.
d). Bus facility : At the inception of the college, there was only one bus service
from Repalle to Khajipalem Via. Nagaram. To go to Tenali or Guntur, people had
to go Repalle and from there travel by bus or train. But after the Presidents visit
to our college, the conditions of the roads were improved and then bus service in
all routes was provided. Our N.S.S. Units initiative in this respect is remarkable.
It also made possible the bus service to distant places like Tirupathi, Hyderabad,
Macharla etc. As a result a good number of students from different areas came to
our college for study.
e) weekly fair : At the time of the inception of the college, there was no market
for formers of Nagaram and neighboring village to sell their products. They either
exported vegetables and other products to Repalle or sold them moving about in
villages. Consumers had to go to Repalle for purchases, Considering the
production and consumption capacity of this area, our N.S.S. Unit came forward
to arrange a periodical fair every Tuesday
in July, 1976. It still provides a

considerable income to the Panchayat and solves the problems of farmers and
consumers. Besides several other businesses have flourished permanently.
f) Mandal center : Several government offices like mandal revenue office,
Primary Health center ,Sub Treasury Office ,Teachers Training Centre were
established when Nagaram becomes the Mandal head quarters of Nagaram
mandal.
g) Major panchayat : As the major panchayat , Nagaram became the center
of several trades providing good income to the businessmen . People visit
it every day one some business .
h). Social Welfare Hostels :Welfare Hostels for students of Scheduled tribes
backward classes and girl students studying in Nagaram high school were
started to help them in getting educated .
i).Banking facility : In view of banking needs of our college management
and people of this region ,a branch of Indian Bank was started . Our
generous patron ,Smt .Rajeswari Ramakrishnan extended her co-operation in
it . Today it is useful to our staff ,students and local people for transaction
j). Construction of Rice Mills :Considering the development of this village ,
people of nearby villages have started four Rice mills and are doing good
business .
k). Hospitals : Where there was no medical service once , one primary
health center and four private hospitals are working to serve the patients
and provide immediate medical service.

l). Museum :Our college management has arranged a museum first of its
kind in our college with U.G.C. aid. It has made available the history of
our region to people . Stupa slab and other artifacts which have emerged
in diggings at Gokarajupalem is on display which is highlight of it .A
tomb of 5th century B.C. found at Thoatapalli consisting of valuable earthen
pots are preserved .The swords and
other weapons used by Rachur
Zamindars are also collected and preserved . These specimens of history of
local area along with some National ones will feast the enthusiasts .Every
year students , parents and elders
of this region visit it and derive
pleasure and knowledge of our Indian culture .
m).Our N.S.S. Unit : Our N.S.S. Unit has been striving since 1976 for the
improvement of roads , provision of bus services , propagating literacy and
health awareness and solving other social problems .
Thus , our college in these 37 years shows its impact in several
fields . It has developed Nagaram as an educational center in this district
with its unique place .To provoke enthusiasm among dull and ignorant of
this region , to train them up in order to mingle with others freely , to
make them educated and self-confident our college will undoubtedly play
a decisive role .
