Steps Aside, You Can Save!

Designers today are forced to face many obstacles that
didnt exist 10 - 20 years ago. Power-saving stand-by and
sleep modes were necessary for flight equipment, but not
nearly as common in traditional embedded systems.
Motors are now more efficient and produce significantly
more torque/power per Watt consumed. But we still must balance power
supply limitations with torque and precision requirements.
While not always considered as elegant as direct drive, gear-reduced
power trains are often quite advantageous. Positioning accuracy can be
improved to finer increments by simply changing the gear ratio. Torque
will also improve based on the gear ratio. And since a smaller, less powerful
motor can be used, power requirements are also reduced. Youll use less
expensive motors and power supplies, plus youll reduce heat dissipation.
