ADJECTIVES, ADVERBS

I The adjective
Short adjectives: tall- taller- the tallest
old- older- the oldest
Spelling rules:
1.short vowel conscc
big bigger the biggest
fat fatter the fattest
hot hotter the hottest
thin thinner the thinnest
2.-e, -ee.drop final e
nice nicer the nicest
free freer the freest
3.cy.-i
dry drier the driest

Long adjectives: careful more careful the most careful


Compound adjectives:
- when the first element is an adjective which keeps its
meaning, it changes into the comp. and sup.
well- known better known the best known
ill- paid
_ worse paid the worst paid
- when the two elements make a new meaning,more and
the most are used
heart- broken more heart- broken the most.......

Irregular adjectives:
good better the best
bad - worse the worst
ill
worse the worst
much more the most
many more the most
late later the latest ( cel mai tarziu)
the latter ( cel de-al doilea din doi)
the last ( ultimul)
old older the oldest

( folosite doar atributiv- his elder brother)

Adjectives placed after the noun:

Expressions of measurement
a river 200 miles long
When 2 or more adjectives modify a noun
He is a man both wise and witty.
When the adj. is modified by a prepositional object

Expressions based on French models:
all the people present
In proper names when the adj. is preceded by the
Alexander the Great

II.The adverb
Form: adjective + ly: nice nicely
BUT: elderly, cowardly, friendly, deadly, lively, silly ugly,
lovely ARE ADJECTIVES.
THE ADVERBS ARE FORMED WITH THE
WORDS WAY / MANNER
Bob had never been friendly to me.
He greeted us in a friendly way.
Adverbs like loud(ly), cheap(ly), quick(ly), tight(ly),
fair(ly) , slow(ly) are often used without -ly
She speaks loud.
Adverbs which have the same form as adjectives: hard,
fast, free, high, low, deep, early, late, long, near, straight,
right, wrong, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly
Adverbs with 2 forms , each with a different meaning:
Deep = a long way down
Deeply = very
Free=without payment
Freely = without restrictions
High = at a high level
Highly = very much
Late = not early
Lately= recently

Most= superlative of much


Mostly= mainly
Near=close
Nearly=almost
Pretty=rather
Prettily=in a pretty way
Hard= with a lot of effort
Hardly=almost not

Special adverbs: enough-placed after adj. hard enough


hardly, scarcely negative meaning
still in interrogative and affirmative sentences
yet in negative and interrogative sentences
Inversion:

adverbs in initial position ( for emphasis)
