Most of the people are familiar

with the above symbol of two
snakes entwined on a staff.
Basically two snakes and a staff
in the middle is what that
matters for us now.
You may find this picture with
many
variations.
Even
Christian institutions use them
freely though they are dead
against any snake worshipping.
Many people do not know that
there is a story behind it. I have
met many doctors in India who
doesnt know it.
Greek God Appolon and and
the Koroniss Princess had a son
namely Asklepios. He was
known as God of Medicine.
During Asklepios mothers
delivery strain she died. In fact
she was killed by Appolons
sister
Artemis.
Nobody
separated the child from his
dead mother. According to the
custom they were to be
cremated, the dead mother with
the living child. At that moment
his father saved the child by
separating the mother and child
by cutting off the umbilical
cord.
From this separation, to cut
open the name derived
ASKLEPIOS. This boy was raised by KENTAUROS who taught him the Art of Medicine.

Kentauros was the eldest son of Centaurs, a tribe of half-horse and half human.
Kheiron's mother was the Nymph Philyra
who was making love with Kronos then his
wife suddenly appeared on the scene. To
escape from her notice he transformed
himself into a horse and thereafter his
descendents became half horse and half
man.

This story is similar to the birth of Ganesh to

Lord Siva and Parvathy. Goddess Gauri
(Paravathy) associate of Lord Siva made
Ganesh out of mud as a white colored being
and placed him as a guard while she was
bathing. When Lord Siva came, not
knowing each other Ganesh did not allow Siva to enter the place. Lord Siva got angry and cut
Ganeshs head off. Gauri felt very sorry. To please her Siva ordered for some animals head in
replacement. They brought an elephants head. Siva made Ganesh alive with elephants head. He
was given god status and authority over education, wealth expeditions, marriages Etc. Hindus
worship Ganesh as a full-fledged God.
Asklepios became extremely skilled in medicine; he could even bring the dead back to life. We all
would have been very happy if Asklepios were still alive among us.
God of underworld Pluto complained against Asklepios to the supreme God Zeus, he was not
getting enough dead. And it was against the routine system. And programs in Hades were out of
whack. Zeus got angry over Asklepios and destroyed him with a thunderbolt. Thunderbolt was
created for the first time to kill Asklepios, from that time onwards thunderbolt came in to
existence. Even today when we hear lightning and thunderbolt you can think of a story behind it.
After death Asklepios was placed among the Constellation Ophiochus the serpent holder
Asklepios was depicted as a kindly man holding a serpent-entwined staff. From there the serpent
entwined staff pictures and statues came in to existence. In the picture it shows very clearly a
serpent creeping up Asklepios staff, which were used later as medic symbol.

This reminds me God Siva with the decoration of serpents.

At the same time Asklepios life has ended he obtained Godhood at

that very moment. He was identified with
Homers Paion the physician of Gods. After
the time of Homer and Hesiod, the word Paian
becomes a surname of Asclepius. (Paion means
physician of Gods)
Kentauros was the eldest son of Centaurs who
taught Asklepios, art of medicine. A centaur is
half man & half horse. This tribe did not last very long. A centaur was an
immortal and God.
Where there is a male, there is a female also. For Centaur they had their partners also like that as
you see in the picture on the left. What a beauty!
Hercules wounded Ketauros with a poisoned arrow during a fight with
him, which has put him in severe pain. Since it was incurable Ketauros
relinquished his immortality and ended his life. Instead of going to
HADES (Because of his Godhood) he was placed among stars by Zeus,
the supreme God, as the Constellation Saggaitarius or Centaurus.
Talking about snakes, Egyptians believed, if anyone died of snakebite he
would reach heaven. Cleopatra ended her life with snakebite. Her
political life was a failure because of series of war and did not have the
final victory. Her associate after Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony ended his life by falling on his own
sword.
Mark antonys death reminds me the end of Travancore
Governor Veluthamby who also died with his own sword
on May 06, 1809. The British were hunting him because
Veluthamby was opposing British supremacy. He knew that
he was loosing his battle against British. He never wanted to
be disgraced by the British. Even then when he died the
British got hold of his dead body and beheaded. They put
that head on a spear and displayed it in Trinandrum
Kizhakkekottah (Trivandrum Eastern Tower). This was
done, during the British invasion when they were operating,
as East India Company to warn the Indians, this is what
that would happen to those who oppose British. India was
not under the rule of British at that time. The British were
merchants at that time under East India Company
Cleopatra was under severe threat by Octavian who became
Pharoah of Egypt. Octavian said that Cleopatra would be
dragged through the streets. Political failures, loss of Mark Anthony and the threat from Octavian
led her to put an end to her life with snakebite.

There was a famous movie of Cleopatra acted by great Richard Burton and Elizabeth Tyler.
People like Asklepios was also there to save people from
snake bitten death. Those who had no option but to die
also chose such deaths. Many other heroes like Mark
Anthony chose his own sword to put an end of his life
rather than getting killed by his enemys sword. That
was considered as a brave death.
Roman senator Petronius was better known as a noble
man. His high position in Neros senate, created many
enemies also. He was also accused with treason, people
say. He was fed up with Neros cruelty to Christians;
this was shown in Quo Vadis movie.
Quo Vadis = Where you are going, in Latin/
Petronius had a very beautiful black-slave. One day he
gave her freedom from her slave status. She was very
happy about it. Petronius did not wait for the verdict of
the accusations that was made against him by his
enemies. He did not want to live in shame, so he decided to put an end to his life. He has cut the
vein at the wrist with his own knife and dipped it in hot water. The hot water drew the blood in
to it fast. In a way suicide of such slow death is unthinkable but it clearly shows how bravely he
faced death. The slave girl who got freedom, and was standing nearby could not bear it because
she was so desperately devoted in him. She also cut her vein of her wrist and dipped in to the
same hot water and died with him.
Taking once own life is a sin before God and punishable by law of every land. History has
recorded many such things and I merely quoted such events and I am not promoting any kind of
suicide. Face your miserable life the way it comes and wait for its end, the way it finishes.
For a long time I thought, the story of Helen of Troy was real and was thrilled by the movie I
saw long ago. But when I learned, Helen was born from a swans egg I froze. But still I could
enjoy the making up of such stories and those who have done it, jut for the fun and enjoyment of
reading.
You must be familiar with most of the names and have seen these pictures not knowing several
stories behind it. Instead of getting entangled in todays miseries of life, I thought of spending
few moments in an imaginary world to relax without any intoxication. I hope, you also will
enjoy the mythological stories.
