Executive Summary
1.

FERTILIZER OFFTAKE

1.1

Fertilizer Offtake during December, 2013

The data reveal that overall nutrient offtake during December 2013 was about 461 thousand tonnes
compared to 566 thousand tonnes of December 2012, which represented a decrease of 18.5 per
cent. Nitrogen offtake decreased by 25.3 per cent and Potash decreased by 49.9 per cent whereas
phosphate increased by 29.5 per cent over December, 2012. In product terms urea offtake was 674
thousand tones which decreased by 29.3 percent, while DAP offtake was 173 thousand tonnes
representing an increase of 36.5 per cent over December 2012.

Cumulative Fertilizer Offtake during Rabi 2013-14 (October-December)

Total fertilizer nutrient offtake during Rabi 2013-14 (Oct-Dec) was about 1,461 thousand tonnes,
which increased by 22.2 percent compared with same timeframe of last Rabi. In product terms,
urea offtake was 1702 thousand tonnes which increased by 12.4 per cent while DAP offtake was
868 thousand tonnes which increased by 55.3 per cent over same period of last season.

FERTILIZER PRODUCTION AND IMPORTED SUPPLIES

Total fertilizer production during December 2013 in Pakistan was about 573 thousand product
tonnes. Of this urea production was 420, DAP 69, CAN 40, Nitrophos 38, NPKs 2 and SSP 4
thousand tonnes. Imported supplies during December 2013 were 309.4 thousand tonnes. Of this
251.4 thousand tonnes urea, 57 thousand tonnes DAP and 1 thousand tonnes MOP was imported
during December 2013.

PRICE TREND

3.1

Domestic

During December 2013, the prices of urea (sona) increased by 1.6 per cent (from Rs. 1827/- to Rs.
1857) whereas prices of urea (tara) increased by 2 per cent (from Rs. 1791 to Rs. 1826) as
compared to November 2013. The prices of DAP in December 2013 decreased by 4.0 per cent
(from Rs. 3623 to Rs. 3479) over the November 2013. The prices of SSP (G) and CAN decreased
by 2.4 and 0.9 per cent respectively. The prices of NP increased by 0.1 percent and SOP increased
by 3.2 percent over November, 2013.
3.2

International

The price of Fob bulk yuzhny urea ranged between US $ 328-340/t. The prices of prilled bulk
Arabian Gulf urea were in the ranges of US $ 330-360/t. The prices of DAP US Gulf ranged
between US $ 333-380/t. The price of DAP China bulk was in the range of US $ 390-400/t. The
prices of MAP and TSP remained in the range of US $ 350-410 and 300-310/tonne respectively.
Ex-Karachi Price of urea was in the range of Rs. 2444-2648 per 50 kg bag while that of DAP was
in the range of Rs. 2833-3273 per 50 kg bag during December, 2013.

SUPPLY/DEMAND SITUATION DURING DECEMBER 2013

Total urea availability during December 2013 was about 985 thousand tonnes, which included an
opening balance of 314 thousand tonnes, imported supply of 251 thousand tonnes and domestic
production of 420 thousand tonnes. Urea offtake during December 2013 was 674 thousand tonnes,
thus leaving a balance of 311 thousand tonnes for next month.
Total DAP availability was 287 thousand tonnes during the month under review. It comprised 69
thousand tonnes domestic production, 57 thousand tones of import and 161 thousand tonnes
leftover of previous month. DAP offtake was 173 thousand tonnes. The closing balance was 120
thousand tonnes.

RABI FERTILIZER SITUATION: MID JANUARY 2014

INTRODUCTION

This note presents the product-wise and nutrient-wise fertilizer supply/demand situation during
December 2013 and provides an outlook for the remaining three months in respect of urea and
DAP. It also includes the average domestic and international prices of major products.
2.

FERTILIZER OFFTAKE DURING DECEMBER, 2013

The fertilizer offtake situation presented in Table 1 shows that total nutrient offtake was about 461
thousand tonnes during December 2013, which decreased by 18.5 per cent compared with
December 2012. The offtake of nitrogen was about 369 thousand tonnes which decreased by 25.3
and phosphate offtake was 92 thousand tonnes which increased by 29.5 per cent, over December,
2012. Potash offtake decreased by 49.9 percent. In product terms, urea offtake was 674 thousand
tonnes which decreased by 29.3 per cent. DAP offtake was about 173 thousand tonnes which
witnessed an increase of 36.5 per cent over December 2012.

PROVINCE-WISE UREA AND DAP OFFTAKE DURING DECEMBER, 2013

Urea offtake decreased in all provinces. It decreased by 28.4, 25.0, 47.0 and 50.2 per cent in
Punjab, Sindh, KPK and Balochistan respectively as compared to December 2012. DAP offtake
increased in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan by 44.4, 27.4 and 58.9 per cent respectively over
December 2012. Its offtake decreased in KPK by 25.0 per cent as compared to December 2012
(Table 4).

Urea

Total urea availability during December 2013 was about 985 thousand tonnes, which includes an
opening balance of 314 thousand tonnes, imported supply of 251 thousand tonnes and domestic
production of 420 thousand tonnes (Table 5). Urea offtake during December 2013 was 674
thousand tones, thus leaving a balance of 311 thousand tonnes for next month.

DAP

Total DAP availability during December 2013 was 287 thousand tonnes (Table 5). It comprises 69
thousand tonnes domestic production, 57 thousand tonnes of imported supply and 161 thousand
tonnes leftover of previous month. DAP offtake was 173 thousand tonnes. The closing balance was
120 thousand tonnes.

SITUATION DURING RABI 2013-14

Rabi 2013-14 started with an opening balance of 174 thousand tonnes of urea. Domestic
production during Rabi 2013-14 is estimated at 2271 thousand tonnes. Urea offtake during current
Rabi 2013-14 is estimated at about 3000 thousand tonnes, against 3290 thousand tonnes of total
availability, leaving a closing balance of 291 thousand tonnes for next season.
DAP availability in current season of Rabi would be 1141 thousand tonnes, which included 307
thousand tonnes of inventory, 484 thousand tonnes of imported supplies and domestic production
of 350 thousand tonnes. Expected offtake of DAP during current Rabi season is about 1047
thousand tonnes, leaving a balance of 100 thousand tonnes for next season.

8.

FERTILIZER PRICES

8.1

8.2.

International prices
