Albert Henry Baldwin was born on April 28th, 1858 at Fairford, a small
World town in Gloucestershire.  His interest in coins began at an early age, and  
Recently added Baldwin's traces its origins back to 1872, when he is thought to have made
Crusader his first coin deal when still a schoolboy.
Commorative Medals
Albert Henry moved to London in 1881, and for the next twenty years

taught at Vicarage Road Boys School in Plumstead.  His involvement with 
European Commemorative Medals  (3) coins continued during this period, and in 1889 he began to issue detailed
USA Medals lists of coins for sale from his Plumstead home.  In 1901, he left Vicarage 
South Africa  (4) Road Boys School to set up a coin and medal shop with his eldest son
Percy, and his other sons Fred and Roy later joined them.
British Colonies  (4)
Latin America Their first shop was at 4A Duncannon Street, Charing Cross, where the
South America  (3) firm remained until shortly after the first World War.  In 1920, Baldwin's 
Central America & Caribbean  (5) became a limited company and relocated to 3 Robert Street, Adelphi.  
Europe Finally it moved once more to a suite in the adjacent Adelphi Building,
where we remained until 1971.

England  (188) Percy and Roy left the firm in the late 1920s, leaving Albert Henry (by

Ian Goldbart

Managing Director

Ian Goldbart is A. H. Baldwin & Sons managing director. He played an instrumental role in bringing Noble
Investments (UK) Plc and A. H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd. together in 2004 and integrating the two businesses in
Baldwin’s premises at 11 Adelphi Terrace. Previously a stockbroker Ian has been a passionate collector of English
coins for more than 25 years … drive and ambition.

Edward Baldwin

Chairman

Edward Baldwin is the longest standing member of the current Baldwin’s team, joining AH Baldwin in 1970 after
graduating from Edinburgh University where he studied modern languages, ancient history and archaeology. He
founded Baldwin’s Auction business in 1994 and has been responsible for collating the legendary Baldwin’s library
which comprises thousands of reference books and catalogues. His specific area of interest is in European
coinages and coins of the Far East, notably those Russia, former British colonies, and coins of the Orient but he
has a great wealth of knowledge in all areas of Numismatics.

Seth Freeman

Director

Seth Freeman joined Baldwins in 1996 after graduating from Southampton University with a degree in History. He
has since become a director of the company and runs Baldwin’s auction department.  Seth has been instrumental
in building alliances with partners internationally that have enabled Baldwin’s to stage regular events in London,
New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai. He is the current Treasurer for and member of the BNTA council
through which he campaigns to bring greater awareness to the British numismatic industry. His specialist
numismatic knowledge is in banknotes and British trade tokens.

Dimitri Loulakakis

Director

Dimitri is a director of A. H. Baldwin & Sons and a key member of the numismatic team, bringing nearly 40 years of
experience and a wealth of professional contacts as a coin dealer to the company. He is a consultant and buyer
for the National Greek Numismatic Museum and the Greek Ministry of Culture. His expertise ranges from Ancient to
English and European coins and medals and he is considered a world authority on the modern Greek coinage as
well as on English milled gold and silver coins.

Stephen Hill

Director

Stephen Hill joined A. H. Baldwin & Sons as a company Director in September 2005 having worked in the
numismatic industry since he left school aged sixteen.  He is a well regarded and respected numismatist with a
worldwide reputation for his skill at cataloguing and valuing coins. He is a member (and former council member) of
the British Numismatic Society, the American Numismatic Associations, and regional numismatic societies in Ireland
and Yorkshire. Stephen travels extensively for the company to shows and auctions worldwide trying to locate
good material to offer to clients;  He specialises in English, Scottish and Irish milled and hammered coins and a
good general knowledge of many other areas and has additionally dealt in tokens and medallions in the last decade
of the 20th Century.

Paul Hill

Paul Hill also joined A. H. Baldwin & Sons in September 2005 after graduating with a first class honours and a
master degree in Ancient History at the University of London and subsequently working for five years at Spink. He
specialises in Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins and was responsible for Spink’s coin dealing in this area
for two years as well as contributing extensively to the information in this section of Spink’s Coins of England
standard catalogue. Since joining Baldwin’s Paul has continued to develop his knowledge and deal in ancient coins
whilst regularly contributing to auction catalogues and fixed price lists.  He is a Fellow and former council member
of the Royal Numismatic Society, a member of the British Numismatic Society, the American Numismatic Society,
and the American Numismatic Association.

Graham Byfield

Graham Byfield has worked at Baldwins for nine years and specialises in Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins whilst 


also managing the firm’s stock of commemorative medals and Indian coins. He is also actively involved in the 
group’s auction business. He is an Executive Committee member of the International Association of Professional 
Numismatists (IAPN) , and is Chairman of the IAPN Membership Committee.

David Kirk

 David took his first steps into the numismatic trade with Baldwin’s in July 2007 having graduated from the
University of Oxford and then from Edinburgh University with a degree in Archaeology and a masters in theology
respectively.  Since joining the team at Baldwin’s David has forged his specialisms’ in Military Medals and British
Milled and Hammered coinage and he is responsible for the online retail side of the Baldwin’s operation.

Caroline Holmes

Caroline graduated from the University of Southampton with a degree in the History of Art and subsequently
attained a masters in the same subject from the Royal Holloway University before joining the coin department at
Spink in 2002.  In 2005 she made the transition at Spink to their Numismatic Book department and shortly after
joined the team at A. H. Baldwin to continue in a similar role.  Since starting at Baldwin’s Caroline has taken over
running the department and she has been instrumental in the development and production of our fixed price book
list.

Tim Wilkes

Tim graduated from the University of St Andrews with a degree in History and has worked for A.H. Baldwin in
various capacities since 1998.  He left full time employment of the firm in September 2007 but has remained an
external consultant for hammered coins of the world, especially Anglo Saxon, Maltese, Medieval European, Indian
and Islamic coins. He is widely respected as a highly able numismatist.

 Andre de Clermont

Andre de Clermont is a consultant to AH Baldwin. He began his career at Spink in 1968 and ended his career there
as a main board director, later becoming a director of Baldwin’s Auctions. Originally specialising in tokens, he
quickly moved on to coins and became well known as an expert on South American coinage. He was instrumental in
opening the collector market for Islamic coins in the 1980s and is a popular and highly respected figure in the
numismatic world.

Douglas Saville

Douglas is an expert on numismatic books and a consultant to AH Baldwin, where he is involved in cataloguing the
firm’s extensive collection of material in this area. After a 38 year career at Spink he recently became an
independent consultant. He has been intimately involved over many years with all aspects of the market for
books, catalogues and other publications to do with coins, coin collecting and the history of numismatics, and was
editor of Spink’s Numismatic Circular for almost 20 years.

Daniel Fearon

Daniel began his numismatic career over 45 years ago and has in this time held senior positions with the prominent
numismatic auction houses in the UK and on secondment in the states.  Since becoming an independent consultant
in 2000 he has advised Baldwin’s in the area of commemorative medals, a subject on which he has written
prolifically having published two major works and various articles.  He is a member of the British Numismatic Society
and was a founder member of the British Art Medal Society.

Stan Goron

Stan has been associated with AH Baldwin since the early 1970s, firstly as a customer then, later, once the
auction business started, as occasional cataloguer as well.  Since retiring from his post as the Manager of the 
National Postal Museum in 1996  Stan has been able to assist the firm as honorary consultant. As a collector, Stan 
has, over the years, become a specialist in Indo-Muslim, Iranian (16th-19th centuries) and Durrani coinage.  He 
has been a member of, and the journal Editor for, the Oriental Numismatic Society for over 20 years and co-
authored the standard work, The Coins of the Indian Sultanates, published in 2001.
