hickies will not be permitted on stage. Please, no perfume or cologne.

Women – all black means all black. No accent colors, highlight colors, colored stripes, colored accessories, etc. Skirts and
dresses must fall below the knee. Skirts and dresses that fall at the knee or above the knee are not acceptable. No shorts or
capri pants. All skin below the diaphragm must be covered. Dresses, shirts, and blouses must cover the shoulders and
must not be low-cut in front. If you are uncertain about anything, ask in advance.
REHEARSALS
Performances can only be, at best, as good as our rehearsals. Excellence is a result of sustained and effective rehearsal
techniques. We will only be as good as our weakest members. Do your part – our success depends on it! Throughout the
school year Cantantes will have rehearsals outside of regular class time. These rehearsals are mandatory and absences will
impact grades and performance opportunities. Many of these rehearsals will be on days of non-attendance for students –
staff development, professional development, and teacher institute days.
PERFORMANCES
Participation in performances is a privilege. Students must demonstrate total competency and preparedness to be allowed
to perform. The following types of performances are mandatory: winter and spring festival concerts, contests, graduation,
and events during the school day. Attendance at these performances is required whether a student is participating or not.
An absence from one of these performances will result in the loss of one full letter grade for the semester. Other
performances are optional and will not negatively impact grades provided students fulfill the responsibilities to which they
have committed. Students who commit must be in attendance or their grades and future performance opportunities will be
affected. Failure to obtain field trip form signatures from classroom teachers is not an acceptable excuse for an absence.
PARTICIPATION
If a student is present in school then that student is expected to participate and sing in rehearsals and performances. In the
rare event that a student’s voice is damaged, that student will be expected to sit and stand with the choir, attentively
observe, and take notes as appropriate. Cantantes rehearsals meetings never be a time to put a head down and rest.

Rules & Regulations, p.2

ATTENDANCE
Chorus is a participatory class so attendance is vital to both individual and ensemble success. Absences, excused or
unexcused, will result in a lower grade, possible performance suspension, or expulsion from Cantantes. Absences with an
excuse are not necessarily excused absences. The instructor must be notified in writing via the Cantantes website well in
advance of an impending absence from a performance or a rehearsal. 4-6 weeks is generally considered reasonable
advance notice. Excused absences will be allotted at the discretion of the instructor in consultation with Cantantes student
leadership. Failure to obtain field trip form signatures from classroom teachers does not qualify an absence as excused.
SCHEDULE CONFLICTS
Students will not be excused from rehearsals or performances for work conflicts, birthdays, family events, vacations,
doctor or dentist appointments, etc. Students participating in other extracurricular activities with conflicting practice
schedules will be expected to split time 50/50 between Cantantes and all other commitments. Games and performances for
other activities may take precedence over Cantantes rehearsals with permission from the instructor. However, Cantantes
performances take precedence over practices and preparations for other activities. Work is not an acceptable excuse for
missing rehearsals or performances.
LEADERSHIP
Cantantes leaders are both elected and appointed. Any appointed or elected leader deemed negligent by the instructor in
fulfilling assigned responsibilities may be replaced. The members of Cantantes may choose at any time by a majority vote
to remove any elected leader from office and vote on a replacement.
WATER & BATHROOM BREAKS
Students are expected to provide their own water in sealed containers – there will be no breaks to get a drink from the
water fountain in the hallway. Come to class prepared. Cantantes rehearsal time is short and of vital importance.
Bathroom breaks will not be permitted during class. Use the restroom facilities before or after class.
FUNDRAISING
Fundraising is an important part of membership in Kelly Cantantes. All students are required to participate in fundraisers
to benefit Cantantes and the choir and music programs. Fundraising is not optional. Each student will sign an individual
contract for each fundraising event. Merchandise sold during fundraising is the property of Kelly High School. Keeping
money from fundraising efforts constitutes theft and will be prosecuted as such.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Cell phones, MP3 players, and other electronic devices are not only in violation of school policy but are disruptive to
rehearsals and are not allowed. Any visible or audible electronic device will be confiscated. A device will be returned only
after a parent conference.
AGREEMENT
I have carefully read and I fully understand these rules and regulations. I agree to be adjudicated, or to have my child
adjudicated, based on the content contained in this syllabus in addition to other Kelly Cantantes rules and regulations
provided by the instructor.
