Fiji Military To Cull American Iguana

A 140-strong Republic of Fiji Military

Forces contingent will head to Qamea
next month to cull American Iguana.
The acting permanent secretary for
Agriculture, Uraia Waibuta, said in
Taveuni the reptile had now been
declared a food security threat.
Mr Waibuta joined Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama in Taveuni in the
PMs first North tour this year.
He said the iguana was now eating
pawpaws and green leafy vegetables like
bele and also eating fish and seafood.

He confirmed that the RFMF had been

asked to help cull the prolific breeder
which had densely populated Qamea,
Laucala and other islands off Taveuni.
The pest has also been spotted on Taveuni
and it is believed to have drifted or swum.
Land Force Commander Colonel
Sitiveni Qiliho said the 140-member
team would include 20 support staff.
He said the team would be trained by
Biosecurity officials on how to cull
before they began the operation.
The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji

(BAF) says in its website the American

Iguana is not native to Fiji and was
illegally introduced in 2000 on Qamea.
Since then the American Iguana has
spread to Matangi and Taveuni.
BAF wishes to advise you that it is
illegal to intentionally or unintentionally
move any stage of the American Iguana
from Qamea, Matangi and Taveuni to
other parts of Fiji and vessel owners
should take every precautionary measure
to ensure the American Iguanas do not
hitch-hike on your vessels.

It is also advisable that vessel owners

inspect their vessels thoroughly before
departing these islands for other islands
in Fiji to ensure you do not aid in the
spread of this invasive species.
There are heavy fines and penalties if
anyone is found to in possession of any
life stage of the American Iguana.
BAF would like you to support the
efforts of the Fijian Government to
contain the American Iguana from
spreading to other parts of Fiji by
adhering to this message.

PM Urges Parents To Meet

Childrens Education Needs

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

is adamant his governments education
policies will help students achieve
their goals.
Speaking in Taveuni, Bainimarama
says the challenge now is for parents to
try and meet their childrens education
needs.
The Prime Minister told students and
parents of Niusawa Methodist High
School in Taveuni to maximize the
opportunity provided by government
to get a better their education.
Today there is no excuse for our
children not to reach the tertiary level,
this change to our education system
is the biggest achievement of this
government in the history of Fiji,
Prime Minister Bainimarama said.

Bainimarama added parents are to

ensure their children are prepared well
for school.
You have heard that the government
will provide free text book this year
like any incentive we will have some
minor problems but I am asking you
to bear with us as this is the first time
we are providing this assistance for
you the only thing you have to buy
is their exercise book and uniform,
Bainimarama said.
The Prime Minster simple message to
the country was to look forward to the
start of yet another school year.
Nothing without work should be
everyone in Fijis motto and your
school motto should be use by everyone
in Fiji, added the Prime Minister.

Shelter For Beggars

The work to reduce and remove
beggars on streets has begun.
There is a centre built at Colo-i-Suva,
Naitasiri, by Government and the
Nazarene Church to house and provide
skills training for beggars from next
month.
The Minister for Women, Children
and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar,
visited the centre last week.
The biggest challenge is changing the
mindset of people, their willingness
to leave the streets and join the centre
to build on their skills to become selfsufficient and embrace an independent
life, Ms Akbar said.
Most of the beggars are generational
beggars. Getting them adjusted to a
new life would be challenging, but the
vision is within our reach.

She said the ministry was in the process

of identifying beggars to be assisted
through programmes administered at
the centre.
The ministry is targeting 15 street
beggars to be trained and assisted
once the centre starts operating. It
will provide skills training, capacity
building and self-sufficiency, she said.
Ms Akbar said a national taskforce
on beggars, is being spearheaded
by the ministry in conjunction
with the Fiji Police Force and the
Ministry of Health, Ministry of Local
Government, municipal councils, the
Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and a few
non-governmental organisations to
provide health care needs for mentally
challenged beggars.
The centre would be opened next month.

Welfare Ministry To
Address Street Beggars
Dealing with street beggars is an
ongoing challenge for the Ministry
of Women, Children and Poverty
Alleviation. One particular concern
now for the Ministry is the use of
children by beggars to arouse public
sympathy. According to the Ministry
of Women, Children and Poverty
Alleviation, the number of street
beggars on our streets are increasing
almost on a daily basis. This has led the
Ministry to impose a zero tolerance on
child begging across the country.
The sad fact is that this is just a one
month old baby. We have had cases
of children but not as young as this
one and with our task force activated
with the Police, we will continue
to take children into our custody
and previously the Police were just
warning. Now we are taking action,
said Minister for Women, Children and
Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar.
However, Minister Akbar says
sensitive approaches are always vital
when dealing with street beggars. We
have found that some have actually
being used by the families to beg and
some of them are mentally challenged.
So we are trying to make every effort
to assist them.

We are not trying to victimize them.

We are trying to assist them so that
they can get off the streets and earn a
decent living, she said.
The Minister adds changing the
mindsets of street beggars is a priority
for the Ministry.
We have to change that mindset.
We have to change the mindset that
they are no longer poor. Being poor
mindset has to change that they can be
active and productive citizens and the
Ministry is here that we take them out
of this depending handouts syndrome
into a more self reliant. We want them
to be self reliant and we are here to
assist them, Minister Akbar stressed.
And the Ministry admits, it cant not
do it alone. We do understand that
out of generosity, out of compassion,
the public gives in to these beggars
on the streets. So once again I urge to
the public and appeal for their support
ensuring we are able to help the
beggars, the Minister added.
A Rehabilitation Centre for street
dwellers will open sometime soon
where it will cater to more than 20
street dwellers.
The Centre will up skill street dwellers
on income generating initiatives.

Partnering To Increase
Europe Tourist Arrivals
To kick off the New Year, Fijis High
Commissioner to the United Kingdom,
H.E. Mr. Solo Mara, met with Tourism
Fiji and UK tour operators at the Fiji
High Commission to discuss and
strategies on how best to maintain the
increasing Europe tourist arrivals to
Fiji.
It also helps that Fiji has been ranked
the happiest nation ahead of 64 other
countries across the globe in the WIN/
Gallup Internationals global 38th End
of year survey results that came out in
December, says H.E. Mara.
High Commissioner Mara said the meeting
was a way of fostering partnerships
amongst key stakeholders and allows the
Fiji High Commission, Tourism Fiji, Fiji
Airways and tour operators to dialogue
and discuss plans for 2015 with the hope
of streamlining activities to get maximum
benefits for Fiji.

Fish Poisoning Due To Water Contamination

High levels of contamination have4been
found in waters that come in contact
with waste from the lower Cunningham

Director Fisheries Aisake Batibasaga
said that fisheries resources have been
dying due to this contamination from
the night of the sewerage break down.
The Fisheries Department confirmed

Flights Between Fiji

And Solomon Islands To
Resume Soon
After months of stale mate, Fiji and
the Solomons Islands have finally
resolved their differences over an Air
Services Agreement which allowed
free flow of flights between the two
countries.
A meeting in Suva between a high level
delegation from the Solomon Islands
Government led by newly appointed
Foreign Minister Milner Tozaka and
Fijis Minister for Civil Aviation Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum and Fiji Airways
management resolved the impasse with
flights between Nadi and Honiara to
resume soon.
Air services between Fiji and the
Solomon Islands are effective
immediately.
There havent been any direct flights
between Honiara and Nadi since the
middle of last year.
The Air Services Agreement does
allow for the designated airlines of
each country to have 3 flights a week
now with the communique entails is
that is in place and we had prior to
the impasse, Solomon Airlines having
a flight from Honiara to Nadi once a

week and Fiji Airways flying via Port

Villa to Honiara said Aiyaz Sayed
Khaiyum Attorney General.
As part of maintaining good relations
between the two countries, Solomon
Islands Foreign Minister Milner Tozaka
has made this breakthrough with Fiji a
priority in his new appointment.
Im so pleased that our two
governments and our people, traveling
public are looking forward to this and
Im so grateful it has taken us just
this morning to agree, said Tozaka.
Fiji Airways CEO/Managing Director
Stefan Pichler said flights are expected
to resume between now and March.
Were going to start to put these flights
into the system to make them sell and I
would assume that it would take about
2 months said Pichler.
The impasse between the two
Melanesian brothers began when Fiji
rejected Solomon Islands request for
additional flights to Honiara resulting
in the cancellation of all Solomon
Airlines flights to Nadi which prompted
Solomon Airlines to cancel all flights
from Fiji as well.

Fiji Airways Assures

Passengers Were Safe

Fiji Airways managing director and

chief executive officer Stefan Pichler
has said that passengers on Flight FJ
415 were not in any danger or serious
harm during the flight.
The plane which was travelling from Fiji
to New Zealand early Thursday morning
was forced to return to Nadi because of
fumes and oil smell reported in the cabin.
At no point in time was there any
concerns about the safety and security
of the people in the aircraft, Mr
Pitchler said.
We found that the fumes in the cabin
was a defect electronic problem which
allowed some of the fuel to get into
the cabin through the air conditioning
system causing the smoke, he said.
On arrival at Nadi there was medical
team on the ground just to make sure
all the passengers were fine.
There were 162 passengers on the flight
who were later booked on another

flight that left Nadi later the same day.

Fijian Woman Stranded In Kuwait

The Fiji Embassy in the United6Arab

Emirates will investigate the case of
a Fijian woman stranded in Kuwait
without her passport and relevant
documents.
Fane Traill, who was recruited by a
Kuwait security company, was stranded
after allegedly being terminated when
it was found out she was pregnant.
Mrs Trail said she only found out
she was pregnant, two months after
arriving in Kuwait.
Fijian Ambassador to UAE Robin Nair
said they would follow up on the case.
My first secretary will be in Kuwait
next week and he will be able to check
this case to see how we can assist.
We will revert after confirming and
attending to this case, Mr Nair said.
Mrs Traill said her visa allegedly
expired the same day she arrived in
February 22, 2014.
She said her passport was also taken
by the company and hasnt been in her
possession ever since.
I paid for my own airfares and left Fiji
on the 20th of February. I arrived on
the 22nd and my visa had expired on
the same day, Mrs Traill said.
I stayed with the couple that recruited

6
6

me and have 20 Kuwait Dinar (dollars)

deducted every month as there was no
accommodation provided for females.
She said she started work on March 11,
as a security guard in one of the biggest
shopping malls.
I worked for 12 hours a day with only
an hour break with other Fijians, Mrs
Traill said.
She said it was in April that she felt
different.

At times when I would bleed from my

nose and was not feeling well, thats
when I found out I was seven months
pregnant. I continued working, but got
tired very easily and did not feel well.
She said she would stay home for two
to three days before returning to work.
Towards the end of April, my
colleagues asked me to go home and
rest as they were going to cover for
me, but the manager for the company

I worked for asked me to stop work

completely.
She said she was told by the company
she had to pay for her own airfare back
home.
I was told by the couple that recruited
me that my contract had been
terminated and I was blacklisted by the
company and that the company would
not process my visa.
When I ask for my passport, they kept
telling that it was still being processed.
She has since then given birth to her
now seven-month-old son and has
gotten married to a Fijian man also
working in the UAE.
After a month here, I met this guy
David Traill who was concerned about
me and the situation that I was in and
was willing to support and marry me.
She said they had been staying at a
family friends place with her evenmonth-old-baby who hasnt received
any immunisation because he did not
have a birth certificate.
Most of the time, my son and I would
stay in the house out of fear that we
would be put into prison to await
deportation since we dont have any
legal documents, Mrs Traill said.

Fijian Teenager Charged With Murder Of

8 Christchurch Baby Gets Bail

A woman charged with the murder of

a 1-year-old girl has been remanded on
bail after a court appearance.
The 18-year old woman appeared from
custody at Christchurch District Court.
She was granted interim name
suppression by Judge Alistair Garland
and granted bail with strict conditions.
The woman was charged with the
murder of baby Aaliyah Ashlyn Chand
in Christchurch after police ruled out
accidental or health reasons for the
death.
Police say the woman was caring for
Aaliyah at a city address last Tuesday
when the infant suffered unexplained
serious head injuries.
The woman took her to Christchurch
Hospital with the assistance of a
neighbour.
But Aaliyah died in intensive care
about 8.30pm on Wednesday with her
parents, Anjani and Dev by her bedside.
The woman accused of murder
appeared in the dock from custody
wearing a black hoodie.
Members of the Christchurch FijianIndian community were in the public
gallery.
Defence counsel Paul Johnson applied
for bail - a move not opposed by police
- so he could obtain instructions and
get disclosure from police.
Mr Johnson argued that it should be

8
8

granted on the basis that her family,

including parents and siblings in Fiji,
did not know she had been charged.
She was five months pregnant and lived
with her husband, Mr Johnson said.
Police prosecutor Glenn Henderson
agreed with those reasons, and added
that the woman, with conditions, would
not be a flight risk or at risk of failing
to appear at her next court date.
Judge Garland remanded the woman
on bail to February 5 at the High Court
in Christchurch.

He granted bail on the conditions

that she reside at a city address, that
she surrender her passport to police,
not apply for any travel documents,
and given that it was a "very serious"
charge, the judge said she should also
be subject to a 24-hour condition. She
can only leave home to attend court,
meet with her lawyer, or go for medical
appointments - all with her husband.
Judge Garland also granted interim
name suppression to ensure fair trial
rights, but said it would need to be
fully argued at her next appearance.
Applications by the media to
photograph the woman were rejected
by the judge.
"Baby Aaliyah's death is an utter
tragedy for the family," said Detective
Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson, who
led the investigation.
"Her death has also affected the wider
community and the team investigating

this incident.
"Canterbury police will continue to
support Aaliyah's family through the
court process."
No other charges were likely "at this
point in time" and police were not
seeking anyone else in relation to the
death.
"Any death is difficult to deal with
but I think it's particularly difficult to
deal with when someone of that age is
involved," Mr Anderson said.
The age of the baby and the injuries
involved made it a "complex"
investigation, he added.
Aaliyah's family was "very upset", he
said.
The alleged killer walked out of court
with hands shielding her face, and was
bundled into a waiting car.
Police investigations are continuing.
Aaliyah's family posted a tribute on the
website Heaven Address on Friday.
"You grew up way too fast, before
we knew it, it was your first birthday,
a whole year had passed. You began
to walk, talk, laugh and smile. You
became the smartest girl I knew, your
momma always teaching you new
tricks to do," the tribute said.
"I never imagined what life would be
without you here, so why did life have
to play out this way? Early morning of
January 7, 2014 we lost you.
"Without you here none of us know
what to do. You were taken from our
lives way too fast. Come back please,
our little Munni we miss you. You were
our little miracle, but now you are our
angel in the sky watching over each
one of us.
"Remember I love you, for forever and
a day and nothing will ever change
that."

Minister Calls On Youth To Negligent Parents Will Face

Full Brunt Of The Law
Improve Achievements
Police will continue to take negligent
parents to task.
This follows incidents where children
have been involved in accidents after left
unsupervised by parents or guardians.
And with the holidays and festive
season upon us, Police say this is an
issue they will not take lightly.
If parents and guardians are proven
that they did not do their part well of
their duty of care to their children ,
theyll be investigated, said Chief of
Operations, Rusiate Tudravu.

In Fijis first parental negligence case

ever, a 26-year-old Fijian mother was
charged with two counts of manslaughter
arising from negligence and duty of
care of parents for the deaths of her two
children in Taveuni in 2012.
The fire incident claimed the lives of a
two-year-old boy and his five-year-old
sister.
Fiji Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro
said the Fiji Police Force will pursue
charges of parental negligence of cases
in which children are victims.

THE Agriculture industry is looking

to increase production of export crops
this year.
Principal agricultural officer West

shortage of some export crops last year.
"This year, we are doing our best to
meet the demands," Mr Kumar said.
"We have had requests from New
Zealand for some duruka so we are
looking to meet the demand for this."
He said they also wanted to tap into
some of the newer export crops that

were emerging from the New Zealand

and Australian markets.
"In recent years, we have established that
there is a good market for drumsticks, more
commonly referred to in Fiji as saijan.
"However, there are not as many trees
around to cater for this so we are
working to rectify this."
The agriculture sector would also focus
on food security this year.
He said they would also focus on
potato planting during the first quarter
of the year.

Exports To Increase

The Hon. Minister for Youth and

Sports Mr Laisenia Tuitubou met this
week with the youth of Yaqeta and
Vuaki villages in the Yasawa where he
urged them to work hard.
The Minister is leading a delegation
to parts of Yasawa to look at ways of
developing youth led initiatives through
his Ministry. During his visit to Yaqeta
village, the Minister held talks with the
youth and elders where he stressed the
importance of using available resources
for both employment opportunities and
sustaining livelihoods.
Most development in your villages
were initiatives of the elders and I
urge the youths to start making the
commitment to bring about new and
better ones, the Minister said.
Youths are not leaders of tomorrow
they are leaders of today. You have
to forget your past failures and need
to move forward if you want to be
successful in life.
The Hon. Minister was told yesterday

that most youth clubs are registered

with the ministry but are not active and
he has urged the youth clubs and the
elders to work towards activating their
clubs to guarantee assistance from
Government.
The Ministrys director William
Naisara accompanied the Minister and
stressed to the youths that they need
to ensure that their plans are integrated
with the overall village development
plans.
It is advisable that all activities, plans
and reporting are submitted to and
endorsed by the village council or the
elders, said Mr Naisara.
This has worked with most successful
youth clubs and the ministry
recommends that your clubs become
part of your villages development
process, said Mr Naisara to the youths
of Yaqeta and Vuaki villages.
The senior officials are currently
touring the Yasawa group visiting
youth and sports clubs.

Accept Old $2 Coins

THE Reserve Bank of Fiji is calling on

traders and retailers to accept old $2
coins as legal tender after members of
the public reported having their old $2
coins rejected in transactions.
"Traders and retailers are encouraged
to continue accepting the old $2 coins
for transactional purposes," Reserve
Bank of Fiji deputy governor Ariff Ali
said.
"They are also encouraged to deposit
these coins with their commercial
bank and not to reissue these coins to
customers to assist with the withdrawal
process.
"The old $2 coins are still legal tender."

He said all coins were to have been

returned to commercial banks by
December 31 last year and while
response was positive some old $2
coins were still in circulation.
"If you are in possession of the old
$2 coins please return them to your
nearest commercial bank and you will
be issued with the new $2 coin. The
commercial banks will return the old
$2 coins to the Reserve Bank of Fiji."
"All commercial bank branches have
been advised to accept old $2 coins
from customers who may wish to have
these deposited into their accounts or
exchanged for new ones."

The Queen's Award For Elisha Bano-Mow

A YOUNG Fijian woman, Elisha BanoMow, has done Fiji proud by being the
only Fijian selected to be awarded the
Queen's Young Leaders Award.
Mrs Bano-Mow, together with 60 other
youths from around the world, will be
handed the award by Her Majesty the
Queen later this year.
"The Queen's Young Leader Award
aims to recognise exceptional people
aged 18-29, who are taking the lead
in their communities and using their
skills to transform lives," she said.
"It was really, very unbelievable.
"They called two nights before my
birthday to confirm that I was one
of the 60 and I must say this was an
amazing birthday present.
"It still feels a little unreal, I mean,
what are the odds of me getting an
international award and one that will be
presented by Her Majesty, the Queen?
"So the feeling is all over the place
for now, but I am surely feeling very
blessed, lucky and fortunate."
Mrs Bano-Mow applied for the award
on the website, after which she also had
to go through a phone interview as well
as be judged by a panel of international
judges.

"A panel decided on the finalists and

a phone interview was also conducted
with us.
"After that, we were called and emailed
to be notified of making it to the 60
who will be receiving the award."
Mrs Bano-Mow, being a recipient
of the award, will receive a unique
package, including training, mentoring
and networking as well as a one-week
residential program in the UK during
which they will collect their award
from the Queen.
In a statement from the British High
Commission, The Queen Elizabeth
Diamond Jubilee Trust chief executive
Dr Astrid Bonfield said: "The leadership
of talented young people in all spheres
of life can transform communities and
societies for the better.
"What the 60 young people announced
today have achieved is remarkable
and their plans for the future are truly
inspiring.
"The Queen's Young Leaders Program
is poised to unlock the potential of
this diverse and talented group of
young people and we are delighted to
be supporting them to go further and
achieve more."

Fijian Government Response To The Claims Made By

The Leader Of The Opposition And The Leader Of NFP
The Fijian Government dismisses the
claims made by the Honourable Leader
of the Opposition and the Honourable
Leader of the National Federation
Party (NFP) in the statements issued
by them to the media.
2. They have claimed that the SecretaryGeneral to Parliament (SecretaryGeneral) has acted on the directions of
the Minister of Finance to implement a
new arrangement for the funding of the
parliamentary office staff of political
parties in Parliament.
3. To the contrary, the new arrangement
was implemented by the SecretaryGeneral in the exercise of the powers
conferred upon the Secretary-General
under the Constitution. The 8 January
2015 letter from the Secretary-General
to all political parties in Parliament
makes it very clear that the SecretaryGeneral, in the exercise of her
constitutional powers, has decided
that political parties in Parliament
will no longer be provided with
established civil service positions for
their parliamentary offices. Instead,
all the political parties will be allocated
funding by the Secretary-General and
it will be the responsibility of the
respective political parties to engage
their own staff for their political party
offices in Parliament.
4. Furthermore, in her 8 January 2015
letter, the Secretary-General further
states as follows: Based on the
funding appropriated for Parliament
in the 2015 National Budget under the
2015 Appropriation Act 2014, I have
reviewed the amounts to be allocated
to each political party for the staff of
their parliamentary offices and I have
decided that each political party will
be allocated funding of $15,000 per
member per annum.
5. It is therefore quite clear from the 8
January 2015 letter that the SecretaryGeneral decided in her own right that
she will be making and implementing
this new arrangement for the funding
of staffing of parliamentary offices of
political parties.
6. Given the above, the claims by
the Opposition are misleading and
superfluous. In light of the fact that
the decision to implement a new
funding arrangement was made by the
Secretary-General, any claim that there
was a breach of the Constitution or the
Standing Orders is unfounded.
7. There is no doubt that the SecretaryGeneral consulted and held discussions
with the Minister of Finance, as the
funding of staffing is being sourced
from monies allocated to Parliament
under the 2015 National Budget.
8. There is nothing unconstitutional

or improper about an independent

constitutional office consulting the
Minister of Finance or his Ministry
on budgetary and funding issues, both
before and after the announcement of the
National Budget. Such consultations on
financial matters are regularly held and
will continue to be held with numerous
independent constitutional offices,
including the Judiciary, the Director of
Public Prosecutions, FICAC, AuditorGeneral, Supervisor of Elections and
other Commissions established under
the Constitution.
9. Of course, the Secretary-General
held discussions with the Minister
of Finance regarding resourcing
of Government and Opposition
parliamentary offices. Indeed, even
before the 2015 National Budget
was finalised, the Secretary-General
had raised concerns with respect to
the provision and management of
staff for the respective political party
parliamentary offices. These included
hiring of staff who were over the civil
service retirement age, as well as
requests for staff to be appointed to
civil service positions without having
proper qualifications and without a
competitive selection criteria being
followed.
10.
Following
discussion
and
correspondence with the Minister
of Finance, the Secretary-General
made an independent decision that
each political party in Parliament
will be provided with funding as
determined by the Secretary-General
and it will be for the political parties
to engage their own staff on their own
terms and conditions. Contrary to the
recommendation of the Minister of
Finance in his 24 December 2014 letter
to the Secretary-General to make an
allocation of $10,000 per member per
annum, the Secretary-General in her
discretion decided to allocate $15,000
per member per annum.
11. The 2015 Appropriation Act 2014
and the 2015 Budget estimates have
allocated a single sum for Parliament
without any separate SEGs, programme
or activity, thereby giving the SecretaryGeneral the independence guaranteed
under the Constitution and more
latitude to make her own independent
decision as to how the funds allocated
by Parliament for the expenditure of
Parliament is to be utilised.
12. Based on the amounts allocated
in the 2015 National Budget, the
Secretary-General decided that each
political party will be allocated
$15,000 per member per annum and
the political parties are to use these
funds for the staffing and running of

their respective parliamentary offices.

13. The decision of the SecretaryGeneral undoubtedly gives the
political parties more independence
with respect to their staff in their
parliamentary offices and ensures that
civil service rules and regulations
are not undermined by appointments
of staff by political parties for their
parliamentary offices.
14. Indeed, the new funding arrangement
implemented by the Secretary-General
is a fair and proportional distribution of
funding between the political parties in
Parliament. Clearly, the more members
a political party has in Parliament,
the more resources are needed by
that political party for staffing of its
parliamentary offices to effectively
attend to its members of Parliament
and members of the public. The fact
that a political party has more members
in Parliament naturally means that
they have a much larger support and
voter base who will be coming to their
political party offices in Parliament
to raise all sorts of issues with these
members. Hence that political party
will need more staffing resources for
this purpose.
15. Hypothetically speaking, if an
existing political party has 5 seats in
Parliament, then it will be allocated
$75,000, and in the next general
elections, if it wins 10 seats, then it will
be allocated $150,000 for the staffing
of its parliamentary office given that it
has more members in Parliament and
will have a larger voter and support
base.
16. It would appear that the Opposition
finds the new funding arrangement
objectionable because FijiFirst is being

allocated more funding than them. As

the Opposition, they need to accept
the fact that they have much fewer
members in Parliament and much
lesser voter and support base, hence a
lesser allocation under this transparent
and fair arrangement whereby funding
is allocated proportionally.
17. The claims demonstrate a further
misunderstanding of the separation
of
powers
and
parliamentary
procedures and processes. The NFP
leader confuses the role of the Public
Accounts Committee (PAC) with
the role of political party offices. His
claim that he needs more funding for
his staff to better perform his duties
as the Chairperson of the PAC are
also totally misplaced, given that, as
a Parliamentary Standing Committee,
the PAC has its own secretariat and
separate resources are provided for
all Standing Committees. The funding
allocated by Secretary-General to NFP
is for staffing for its parliamentary
office and not for PAC.
18. This claim by the NFP leader
demonstrates once again his inability
to comprehend and understand that
in a parliamentary democracy, the
resourcing of Standing Committees
such as PAC, which all have their
respective mandate, are separate to the
political agendas of respective political
parties. We have been assured by the
Secretary-General that all Standing
Committees will be adequately
resourced and staffed as and when
required.
19. The claims made by the Opposition
are wholly without merit and are a
mischievous attempt by the Opposition
to mislead the Fijian people.

Canberra Consulting

Australia is yet to confirm a date for

its proposed meeting next month with
Pacific leaders on regional agencies.
The top-level meeting to review the

Outgoing United States Ambassador to

Fiji Frankie Reed says she is sad about
leaving as her term comes to end this
week.
Aside from missing the Fijian weather
of hot sunshine, a deep contrast to the
cold Washington DC weather, Reed
says she will miss the people.
Reed said with the friendly warm
hearted Fijian people, although they
argue at times she has learned how to
become better at discussions by not
taking them outside of work.
Ive learnt to do better and we dont
take arguments outside, we go out there
and play volleyball, so we work together
and we play together, Reed said.
Being in Fiji has also taught her
to appreciate the ocean and the
environment and she has travelled to
many countries in the Pacific region
she believes no other ambassador has
had the chance to.
If an ambassador that comes to Fiji
does not understand the Ocean and the
environment, then I dont know what
the person has been doing here, she
added.

United States Ambassador to Fiji

Frankie Reed
She said coming to Fiji 13 years ago
and returning as an ambassador has not
changed the way she feels about Fiji.
I hope youll invite me back because
Ill miss working in Fiji very much,
Reed said.

and like her predecessor, will also be

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces
(RFMF) has confirmed that troops
based in Iraq are likely to be rotated
next month.

to Iraq for United Nations guard force
duties in October 2013 and they were
supposed to be rotated with other
soldiers.
Land Force Commander Colonel
Sitiveni Qiliho said, You are right,
they have been there for more than 12
months.
Colonel Qiliho said some of the

soldiers were expected to return but

the Iraqi authorities were taking a bit
longer to process their visas.
Some of them will stay back and
serve for another 12 months so that we
can service Iraq well, he said.
Colonel Qiliho said the Iraqi authorities
needed more time to process but, it is
a normal thing.
The visa has been arranged but it has
taken a bit longer to process and we are
anticipating that we will rotate them but
we will rotate the same number, hoping
that all will be done by February.

Canada Bans Poultry

Products From Oregon
And WA States

Due to the avian flu outbreak in Oregon

and Washington, raw poultry products
sourced or shipped from those states
are not allowed into Canada.
Just south of the border, Guy
Occhiogrosso with the Bellingham
Chamber of Commerce says the polutry
and egg ban likely wont be a big hit to
businesses where Canadians shop.
That is not one of the items that are
listed very high; its not one that we
talk about a great deal, he tells us.
Most of what it is are the dairy
products. More so than that is just
general merchandise that tends to be,
I would say, the largest consumption
from cross-border purchasers.
Examples of prohibited items listed

on the Canadian Food Inspection

Agencys website include:
live birds and hatching eggs
eggs, yolks, egg whites (albumen)
poultry meat (other than fully
cooked, canned, commercially
sterile meat products)
raw pet foods containing poultry
products
feathers
poultry manure and litter
laboratory material containing
poultry products/by-products
The CFIA adds there is no food safety
risk associated with these products,
adding these steps are being taken
to prevent the introduction of avian
influenza into other parts of Canada.

YVR Opens Newly Expanded

Domestic Terminal
Vancouver International Airport has
officially opened its newly expanded
domestic terminal.
Its the first major project completed as
part of the 10-year gateway strategy.
It took three years to build, but now
that its open, it will make travel easier
and more convenient for passengers,
while providing a beautiful atmosphere
and more shopping options, says
Craig Richmond, president of airport
authority.
The main reason for it, and the reason

its called the A-B Connector is now

passengers will be able to arrive
lets say from Prince George or from
Nanaimo and then connect to other
parts of the terminal without having
to go back through security again, he
tells us.
New gate capacity and expedited
luggage service is also expected to lead
to a more enjoyable overall experience.
Richmond adds the project came in on
time and on budget at a cost of $213
million.

Target To Close All 133

Canadian Stores, Gets
CCAA Protection

Retail chain opened in Canada in spring

2013 but has decided to close shop
Target says it plans to discontinue all
operations in Canada and has been
granted protection from creditors, less
than two years after opening to much
fanfare.
In a release early Thursday, the U.S.
retail chain said it will close all its
locations in Canada. There are 133
stores across the country with about
17,600 employees.
The company launched in Canada in
March of 2013, not quite two years
ago.
But after high expectations, the chain
failed to deliver right out of the gate as
customers faced higher-than-expected
prices, and empty shelves as the retailer
had problems with its distribution
chain.
Target lost almost $1 billion in its first
year in Canada, and while the losses
have shrunk since then, the chain is
still losing money daily.
Executives repeatedly promised they
would get it right and reaffirmed their
commitment to Canada as recently as
July, but ultimately decided to pull the
plug.
"After a thorough review of our
Canadian performance and careful
consideration of the implications of
all options, we were unable to find a
realistic scenario that would get Target
Canada to profitability until at least
2021," the U.S. parent company's
CEO Brian Cornell said in a release
Thursday, explaining the justification
for the shutdown.
Target filed an application in a Toronto
courtroom for protection under the
Companies Creditors Arrangement
Act early Thursday morning. That
request was granted.
The federal law allows companies
that can't pay their debts the ability
to restructure themselves. Without it,
the companies and individuals that
an insolvent company owes money
to can technically start seizing assets.
But because Target has applied under
CCAA, that won't happen here yet.
Aaron Alt, most recently Target's
senior vice-president and treasurer, has
been named CEO of Target Canada to
execute the wind down process under

advertise on

the court's supervision.

Target's shareholders welcomed the
news, sending shares in the company
up almost three per cent on the NYSE
on Thursday. Closing up shop in
Canada means the company has more
money to focus its efforts on shoring
up its also-struggling U.S. operations.
And at least one analyst also hinted
that it was a good idea to end the failed
experiment in Canada.
Severance will be paid
Target
has
hired
international
consultancy Alvarez & Marsal to
oversee the liquidation and wind-down
process.
Most of Target's stores are in locations
that were taken over from existing
Zellers leases, but the company does
own some real estate in Canada.
Financial advisory firm Lazard Ltd.
will advise the company with regards to
possibly selling its real-estate assets. In
a conference call with analysts, Cornell
noted that about $1.2 billion in debt
will come off the company's books just
from getting out of the leases alone,
providing a buyer can be found.
A number of Target's locations are
owned by Toronto-based RioCan
Investment Trust. Units of that REIT
shed about one per cent on the TSX on
Thursday when the Target news came
out.
The company is seeking the court's
permission to set up a $70-million
fund to ensure all employees affected
by the move get at least 16 weeks in
severance pay. The stores will remain
open while the company completes the
liquidation process.
Target said the decision to close shop in
Canada will cost between $500 million
and $600 million in cash from the
U.S. parent's bottom line, but results
in a write down of about $5.4 billion
from an accounting perspective in the
upcoming fourth-quarter earnings.
Target is the latest retailer to go under
in what's becoming an increasingly
tough retail environment in Canada.
Fashion shops Mexx, Smart Set and
Jacob have all announced plans to close
down in recent months. Montreal-based
Le Chateau hasn't officially closed, but
the clothing chain has been in a tough
spot of late.

Improperly Cleaned Endoscopes
Canadian Stores Within 2 Months
Used In 10,000 Procedures

Officials says error affects procedures

at University Hospital of Northern
B.C. from 2012 to Dec. 2014
Northern Health says about 10,000
patients in Prince George underwent
procedures with endoscopes that
weren't properly cleaned.
The endoscopes were used over a
three-year period between 2012 and
Dec 2014 at the University Hospital of
Northern B.C.
Ronald Chapman, the vice president
of medicine with Northern Health said
the problem occurred during the precleaning of the instrument.
"Generally, when an endoscope is used,
the physician or the nurse who used the
scope is responsible for doing the precleaning to remove any tissue or fluid
from a narrow air and water channel."
Chapman said the manufacturer's
instructions say that a narrow channel
in the instrument must be rinsed out for
30 seconds before cleaning.
"What some of the staff did is that,

the button was pressed, but it wasn't

normally held for 30 seconds, nor did
the air suction get reliably applied
for 10 seconds. This was the step
incorrectly applied by our staff."
Extremely low infection risk
Chapman said improperly cleaned
endoscopes could cause hepatitis B and
C and HIV infection, but in this case,
the B.C. Centre for Disease Control
has determined that risk of infection is
extremely low.
Between 2012 and last month, there
is no evidence a single infection arose
from use of the endoscopes, he said.
Northern Health will be contacting
patients who have had one of the
procedures during the time frame, and
their physicians, to provide them with
additional information.
"We would particularly like to apologize
for any undue stress, especially ... for
our patients," he said.
The error did not impact the diagnostic
outcome of the tests, he said.

Fake Tax Man Defrauded

Calgary Victims Of $60K
In Phone Scam

As if dealing with the tax man isn't

already bad enough, police in Calgary
are warning about a telephone scam
involving a caller who claims to be
from the Canada Revenue Agency.
Police say it began last month when
members of the public received a call
from a man who said they owed back
taxes and would be arrested if they
didn't pay immediately.
The faux tax man had some of

the victims' personal information,

including their name, address and bank
account details.
They were instructed to pay the debt
with prepaid credit cards or through a
money transfer service, and were kept
on the phone until the transaction was
complete.
Police say 35 victims were identified
in 2014 and defrauded of a total of
$60,000.

Airasia Flight QZ8501: Confusion As Explosion Theory

Questioned, Black Box Taken To Jakarta

There is confusion about what happened

in the final moments of AirAsia flight
QZ8501, with one Indonesian official
saying the plane probably exploded
before hitting the water.
Search and rescue agency operations
coordinator SB Supriyadi said the
wreckage indicated the plane likely
"experienced an explosion" before
hitting the water due to a significant
change in air pressure.
He said the left side of the plane
seemed to have disintegrated, pointing
to a change in pressure that could have
caused an explosion.
"It exploded because of the pressure,"
Mr Supriyadi said.
"The cabin was pressurised and before
the pressure of the cabin could be
adjusted, it went down - boom."
Mr Supriyadi said the fact that
fishermen in the area had reported
hearing an explosion and saw smoke
above the water supported this theory.
But another official disputed the
likelihood of a blast.
"There is no data to support that kind
of theory," said Santoso Sayogo,
an investigator at the National
Transportation Safety Committee
(NTSC).
Indonesian navy divers retrieved the
plane's black box flight data recorder
on Monday, while efforts to retrieve
the cockpit voice recorder continued.
The second so-called black box is
located about 20 metres from where
the flight data recorder was found, but
divers had not yet been able to get to it.
"[The cockpit voice recorder] seems to
be under a wing, which is quite heavy,"
Mr Supriyadi said.
The black boxes contain a wealth of data
that will be crucial for investigators piecing
together the sequence of events that led to
the airliner plunging into the sea.
The flight data recorder monitors

information such as airspeed and

heading, while the cockpit voice
recorder stores radio transmissions and
sounds in the cockpit.
Both are located near the rear of the
plane and designed to survive under
water.
The Airbus A320-200 airliner lost
contact with air traffic control in bad
weather less than halfway into a twohour flight from Indonesia's secondbiggest city of Surabaya to Singapore.
Flight data recorder has been taken to
Jakarta for analysis
The flight data recorder was brought
by helicopter to Pangkalan Bun, the
southern Borneo town that has been at
the base for the search effort, and then
flown to Jakarta for analysis.
Officials said it would undergo a
lengthy analysis in the capital with
the help of a team of experts including
from France and manufacturer Airbus.
The head of the transport safety
committee Tatang Kurniadi said the
flight data recorder looked to be in
good condition.
But investigators may need up to a
month to get a complete reading of the
data.
"The download is easy, probably one
day," the NTSC's head investigator,
Mardjono Siswosuwarno, said.
"But the reading is more difficult ...
could take two weeks to one month."
The committee has said a preliminary
report on the accident would be
produced within a month and a final
report after a year.
Forty-eight bodies have been retrieved
from the Java Sea and brought to
Surabaya for identification.
Searchers believe more bodies will be
found in the plane's fuselage.
Relatives of the victims have urged
authorities to make finding the remains
of their loved ones the priority.

Wife Chops Off Cheating

Husbands Penis, Twice
A jealous wife in China chopped off her
cheating husbands penis as he slept,
then snuck into his hospital room after
he had it sewn back on and hacked it
off again and tossed it out the window.
Fan Lung, a dad of five, sealed his
fate when he decided to use his wifes
cellphone to send his secret lover a hot
and heavy email, Central European
News reports.
The 32-year-old forgot to log out of
his account after the message was
sent, which is how his 21-year-old
wife, Feng who is now under
arrest for grievous bodily harm
came across the saucy exchange and
snapped.
The jilted wife went berserk, grabbed
a pair of scissors, stormed into their
bedroom and cut off his penis while he
was sleeping.
Lung was rushed to the hospital,
where doctors were able to save the
appendage and sew it back on.
But Feng was able to sneak into the

recovery room, where she chopped his

penis off a second time and threw it out
the window.
A shocked Lung chased his wife
outside, despite losing a lot of blood.
Staff rushed out to see what was
happening and found the patient with
blood streaming down his legs hitting
the woman, a hospital spokesman
said. He was stopped and the woman
was taken in for treatment, and then we
discovered she had chopped his penis
off again.
Despite desperate search efforts,
authorities were unable to find Lungs
manhood. Police believe it may have
been stumbled upon by a stray dog or
cat.
The woman Lung was cheating with
Zhang Hung, 21 said shes OK with
her man not being able to have more
children.
It doesnt matter that hes lost his
fertility, she said. He has five children
already.

Sydney Mother Calls Bomb Squad

'Homemade Explosive Device'
Found In Son's Bedroom
A man has been arrested after a mother
allegedly found a suspicious package
in her son's bedroom at Werrington in
the city's west.
The woman's daughter, Shayleen Butt,
said her 23-year-old brother, Harley
Turnbull, brought the device home
with a friend, not knowing what it was,
then both of them left.
Her boyfriend, Neil Jones, said
the device looked like it could be
dangerous.
"[It was] just a little black package
about the size of a mobile phone that
was taped up with wiring hanging out
of it," he said.
"I just wanted to go to sleep, I was
tired. It was a big waiting game."
The mother became suspicious and
called police.
The bomb squad and forensic
specialists evacuated the home and

spent the night examining the package,

which was believed to be a homemade
explosive.
They removed it from the house about
3:00am (AEDT) and took it to a local
soccer field where it was detonated
about an hour later.
Police said they arrested a 23-yearold man at a house on Spur Street in
Beaumont Hills about 2:20pm.
"He was taken to Castle Hill Police
Station where he is currently assisting
with inquiries," a NSW Police
statement said.
Inspector Michael Cruickshank said the
device "could have been catastrophic"
in the wrong hands.
"I'd also like to stress to the community
that this is being investigated as a oneoff incident, there were no threats
made and no person was put at risk by
this incident," he said.

Dalit Couple Lynched In

Punjab 'Honour Killing'

The failure of Punjab Police to provide

security to a newly-married Dalit
couple despite directions from the high
court led to a gory end for the young
couple as they were Sunday lynched
allegedly by the girl's relatives.
Police officials investigating the case
said it was a case of "honour killing".
The couple - Sandeep, 24, and
Khushboo, 22 - were allegedly
attacked by four-five masked men with
swords and other sharp-edged weapons
at the house of the boy's family in
Mugowal village near Mahilpur town
in Hoshiarpur district, 125 km from
Chandigarh.
The attackers first targeted Khushboo
and later lynched Sandeep, his family
members told police.
While Sandeep died on the spot,
Khushboo was taken to a hospital in
Mahilpur town where she succumbed
to her injuries.
Sandeep's father, Parkash, who tried to
save his son, was also brutally attacked.
He was admitted to the Civil Hospital
in Hoshiarpur and his condition is said
to be critical.
Police have registered a case of murder
against the girl's family members
following a complaint filed by the
boy's relatives.

The couple, who were neighbours, had

eloped and got married about three
months ago against the wishes of the
girl's family.
Apprehending threat to their lives
after their marriage, the couple had
approached the Punjab and Haryana
High Court for protection. The high
court had directed police to provide
them protection.
After getting the order from the high
court, the couple had approached police
in Hoshiarpur district. However, police
did not provide them any security and
let them go back to their village despite
threats from the girl's family.
Following the threats, they left the
village and stayed with a friend in
Mohali town near Chandigarh. The
couple had returned to the village only
a few days ago.
Sandeep's mother Udham Kaur told
police that the mask of one assailant,
who was later identified as the girl's
father Sodhi Ram, came off during the
attack. Kaur claimed she recognised
him.
Hoshiarpur district police chief Rajjit
Singh Hundal said the matter was
being investigated, and claimed that
the couple had refused to take police
protection.

Retired Principal, 80, Wins

$326M Mega Millions Jackpot

A retired school principal is the sole

winner of the $326 million Mega
Millions jackpot drawn on Nov.
4, the biggest prize in New York
Lottery history, officials announced
Monday.
Harold Diamond, 80, of the Sullivan
County town of Wurtsboro, said he
bought the ticket at a highway service
center where he had stopped at his
wife's insistence to wait out a storm on
Election Day. As they ate lunch at the
Valero on Route 302 in Middletown,
Diamond noticed the flashing Mega
Millions sign and decided to spend $10
for 10 sets of Quick Pick numbers.
"I put the ticket in my wallet and forgot
about it," Diamond said in a statement
released by New York Lottery. "I went
to play golf the next day and the guys
in the clubhouse were talking about
the jackpot-winning ticket someone

bought at a Valero on Route 302, and

I thought, wait a minute I bought a
ticket there last night!"
Diamond said he dashed home,
checked his tickets and found he had
the winner.
"I was in a dither, a real daze," said
Diamond, who retired as principal of
George L. Cook Elementary School in
Monticello in 1995.
The New York Lottery's Yolanda Vega
presented a giant ceremonial check to
Diamond on Monday. He has chosen
to take the cash value of the annuitized
prize, which comes to about $130
million after taxes.
Diamond says his plans for the money
include helping family and "giving
back to the local community."
He said he owes his good fortune to
his wife, Carol, a retired Goshen High
School math teacher.

India Toxic Alcohol Kills 14

In Uttar Pradesh

At least 14 people have been killed

after consuming toxic alcohol in India's
Uttar Pradesh state, police said.
Residents of a number of villages in
Lucknow and Unnao districts fell ill
after drinking the alcohol.
More than 100 people are being treated
in hospital, with fears the death toll
could rise.
Toxic alcohol deaths are a regular
occurrence in India, where people
often drink cheap country liquor.
The victims were rushed to various
hospitals in the state after the first cases
of poisoning were reported in Kharta
village near Lucknow, the capital of
Uttar Pradesh.
The Press Trust of India quoted the
state's chief medical officer SNS Yadav

as saying that 123 people have been

admitted to at least two hospitals.
Authorities have begun an investigation
into the incident, but no arrests have
yet been made.
Government spokesman Rajendra
Chaudhary told the AFP news
agency that a dozen officials had
been suspended from different local
departments over negligence.
"The guilty will not be spared," he said.
India has witnessed many incidents of
toxic alcohol deaths in the past.
Nearly 170 people died in 2011 in the
eastern state of West Bengal
At least 30 people were killed in Uttar
Pradesh in September 2009
Some 107 people killed in Gujarat in

India has banned the burning of cow

dung near the Taj Mahal amid fears the
famed white-marbled mausoleum was
turning yellow from air pollution, an
official says.
Authorities have long struggled to control
the impact of pollution on the stunning
17th-century monument dedicated to
love in the northern city of Agra, which
attracts millions of tourists each year.
The ban on Agra residents burning cow
dung, a common fuel source, is aimed at
reducing carbon deposits on the Taj's walls,
spires and domes, said Pradeep Bhatnagar,
chairman of the area known as the Taj Zone.
"From time to time there are concerns
that the colour of the Taj is changing,"
Mr Bhatnagar said.
"So at a recent meeting it was decided
that there should be a ban on burning
cow dung fuel within the city limits.
"There is an aesthetic aspect to it as
well. We don't want the city's walls to
be plastered with cow dung."
Dried cow dung is commonly used in
rural areas as a cheap source of fuel for
heating and cooking.
Women knead fresh dung into melonsize balls before flattening them
against walls to dry - a common sight

throughout India.
A recent study into the discolouration
of the monument by experts from
US and Indian universities and the
Archaeological Survey of India, found
that dust was to blame for the majority
of the yellowing, with carbon deposits
responsible for the rest.
"We couldn't have done much about the
dust but we decided to plug the source
for the carbon particulate matter which
was the burning of organic matter," Mr
Bhatnagar said.
Mr Bhatnagar said Agra residents
would now be encouraged to use
cleaner fuel, adding that they would be
given gas connections.
Trucks using diesel will also be asked
to switch to compressed natural gas by
July, local media reported.
The ban comes after an air quality
monitoring system was set up near the Taj.
In 1996 the Supreme Court banned use
of coal by industries located within a
10,400-square kilometre zone around
the monument.
The UNESCO world heritage site was built
by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb
for his beloved empress, Mumtaz Mahal,
who died during childbirth in 1631.

Eye Test 'Could Detect

Alzheimer's'

REGULAR eye tests could in future

be used to diagnose early-stage
Alzheimer's, new research suggests.
EARLY trials of two different
techniques show that a key Alzheimer's
biomarker can be identified in the
retina and lens of the eye.
Both methods were able to distinguish
between probable Alzheimer's patients
and healthy volunteers with a high
level of accuracy.
Although the research is still at an early
stage, further work could see such
tests used as a first step in identifying
individuals with Alzheimer's.
After an initial eye test, more expensive
and costly procedures such as PET
(positron emission tomography) scans
or spinal fluid analysis would then be
used to confirm the disease.
Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's is
essential to developing effective
treatments that do more than alleviate
the condition's symptoms.
Virtually every trial of a drug
designed to halt or reverse Alzheimer's
progression has ended in failure
because the patients taking part have
already suffered too much damage to
their brains, scientists believe.
Shaun Frost, from the Australian science
agency the Commonwealth Scientific and
Industrial Research Organisation, who
led one of the studies, said: "We envision
this technology potentially as an initial
screen that could complement what is
currently used: brain PET imaging, MRI
imaging, and clinical tests.
"If further research shows that our
initial findings are correct, it could
potentially be delivered as part of an
individual's regular eye check-up.
"The high resolution level of our images
could also allow accurate monitoring
of individual retinal plaques as a
possible method to follow progression
and response to therapy."
The eye tests exploit the fact that the
eye is, in effect, an extension of the
brain.
In both studies, scientists looked
for signs of beta-amyloid protein,
which forms clumps in the brains
of Alzheimer's patients and is a key

hallmark of the disease.

The Australian team used the
turmeric spice ingredient curcumin
as a fluorescent tag that allowed betaamyloid to show up in the retina.
A total of 200 volunteers were first
asked to take a supplement of curcumin,
which binds strongly to beta-amyloid.
The protein was then detected in the
eye using a novel imaging system.
Levels of beta-amyloid in the retina
mirrored those shown in the brain by
PET imaging.
Preliminary results on 40 participants
showed that the test picked up every
participant with Alzheimer's and
correctly identified more than 80% of
those who did not.
In the other study, researchers from the
US company Cognoptix Inc used an
ointment to apply a fluorescent label to
beta-amyloid in the lens of the eye.
Laser scanning was then able to detect
the protein. In tests of 40 volunteers
with and without Alzheimer's, it
identified those having the disease with
85 per cent accuracy.
Paul Hartung, president and chief
executive of Cognoptix Inc, said: "This
system shows promise as a technique
for early detection and monitoring of
the disease."
Both tests showed that levels of betaamyloid in the eye mirrored those seen
in the brain by PET imaging.
The results were presented at the
Alzheimer's Association International
Conference in Copenhagen.
Other research presented at the meeting
suggested that a reduced sense of smell
could be an early indicator of dementia.
Scientists from Columbia University
in New York found that poorer
performance in smell tests was
significantly associated with increased
incidence of the condition.
For each point lower scored on the test
the risk of developing dementia went
up by 10 per cent.
In a separate study US researchers at
Harvard Medical School showed that
people with a poorer sense of smell
had smaller brain volumes in two key
regions linked to memory.

Drink Less To Keep Your

Heart Healthy

Reducing the amount of alcoholic

beverages consumed, even for lightto-moderate drinkers, may promote
cardiovascular health, according to a new
study by the Perelman School of Medicine
at the University of Pennsylvania.
Researchers found that individuals who
carry a specific gene which typically
leads to lower alcohol consumption
over time have, on average, superior
cardiovascular health records.
Michael Holmes, MD,research assistant
professor in the department of Transplant
Surgery at the Perelman School of
Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
said that these new results were critically
important to their understanding of how
alcohol affects heart disease and contrary

to what earlier reports had shown, it now

appeared that any exposure to alcohol had
a negative impact upon heart health.
Holmes added that for some time,
observational studies had suggested that
only heavy drinking was detrimental
to cardiovascular health, and that light
consumption may actually be beneficial.
Holmes further said that this has led
some people to drink moderately based
on the belief that it would lower their
risk of heart disease, however, what
they saw with this new study, which
used an investigative approach similar
to a randomized clinical trial, was that
reduced consumption of alcohol, even
for light-to-moderate drinkers, may
lead to improved cardiovascular health.

Low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol,
LDL-C
What is this test?
This test measures the amount of
low-density
lipoprotein-cholesterol
(LDL-C) in your blood.
LDL cholesterol is often called "bad"
cholesterol because it causes plaque to
build up inside your arteries and leads
to heart disease.
Cholesterol screening is recommended
for men older than 35 and women older
than 45. If you have risk factors for heart
disease, such as a family history of heart
disease, you may need to begin regular
testing of cholesterol as young as age
20. LDL cholesterol is one of a group of
lipoproteins that can indicate heart disease,
so this test is used to help diagnose it.
Lowering LDL-C levels can help
prevent heart disease.
Why do I need this test?
You may have this test as part of a routine
exam to check for high cholesterol.
You may also have this test if you already
have heart disease caused by high
cholesterol. The test can help your doctor
find out how well your treatment is working.
What other tests might I have along
with this test?
Your doctor may also order other blood
tests to measure the levels of various
fats in your blood, including:
Total cholesterol
Triglycerides
High-density lipoprotein, or HDL
What do my test results mean?
Many things may affect your lab test
results. These include the method each
lab uses to do the test. Even if your test
results are different from the normal
value, you may not have a problem.
To learn what the results mean for you,
talk with your health care provider.
Results are given in milligrams per
deciliter (mg/dL). The normal range

of LDL-C is 50 to 130 mg/dL. A level

below 70 mg/dL is considered best
for people who have diabetes or heart
disease risk factors. In general:
100 to 129 mg/dL is near or just
above optimal
130 to 159 mg/dL is borderline
high
160 to 189 mg/dL is high
190 mg/dL and over is very high
It's possible to have extremely low
levels of LDL-C, but this is rare. This
condition is usually a sign of a problem
processing vitamins A, D, E, and K.
If your levels of LDL-C are high, the
condition is called dyslipidemia. High
levels may mean that you have an
imbalance in your diet, but the condition
is often hereditary. Changing your
lifestyle habits and taking medications to
reduce LDL levels may help you reduce
the risk for heart disease and manage the
condition if you already have it.
How is this test done?
The test requires a blood sample, which
is drawn through a needle from a vein
in your arm.
Does this test pose any risks?
Taking a blood sample with a needle
carries risks that include bleeding,
infection, bruising, or feeling dizzy. When
the needle pricks your arm, you may
feel a slight stinging sensation or pain.
Afterward, the site may be slightly sore.
What might affect my test results?
Smoking cigarettes can increase LDL-C
levels. Stress, certain minor ailments, and
some drugs can also affect your results.
How do I get ready for this test?
You may need to not eat or drink anything
but water for a certain time before having the
test. In addition, be sure your doctor knows
about all medicines, herbs, vitamins, and
supplements you are taking. This includes
medicines that don't need a prescription and
any illicit drugs you may use.

Now, Cancer Vaccine From Eating Almonds Decreases

Cat Poop Parasite
Belly Fat

You may soon look at cat poop in a

different light as it may hold the key to
cancer cure.
Using a parasite found in the intestines
of cats, researchers have created
a cancer vaccine that resulted in
unprecedented high rates of cancer
survival when tested in extremely
aggressive lethal mouse models of
melanoma and ovarian cancer.
A healthy immune system responds
vigorously to T. gondii, a single-celled
parasite that lives in a cat's intestines,
in a manner that parallels how the
immune system attacks a tumour.
"We know biologically this parasite has
figured out how to stimulate the exact
immune responses to fight cancer," said
David Bzik, professor of microbiology
and immunology at Dartmouth College
in the US.
In response to T. gondii, the body
produces natural killer cells and
cytotoxic T cells.
Cancer can shut down the body's

defensive mechanisms, but introducing

T. gondii into a tumour environment
can jump start the immune system.
Since it is not safe to inject a cancer
patient with live replicating strains of
T. gondii, the researchers created "cps"
- an immunotherapeutic vaccine.
Based on the parasite's biochemical
pathways, they deleted a Toxoplasma
gene needed to make a building block
of its genome and create a mutant
parasite that can be grown in the
laboratory, but is unable to reproduce
in animals or people.
Cps is both non-replicating and
safe. Even when the host is immune
deficient, cps still retains that unique
biology that stimulates the ideal
vaccine responses.
"Aggressive cancers too often seem
like fast moving train wrecks. Cps is
the microscopic, but super strong, hero
that catches the wayward trains, halts
their progression, and shrinks them
until they disappear," Bzik added.

Too Much Gas Can Lead

To Memory Loss: IndianAmerican Scientist

human body and has key physiological
effects, can impact the brain cells'
ability to use food and glucose.
This can eventually result in the
destruction of synapses where the cells
connect so information can be stored
and memories made.
"So just think about this. If this protein
is being chewed up, then neuron-toneuron communication is disrupted.
If it continues to happen in your brain
or in my brain, our memory will be
shut down," explained Nilkantha Sen,
neuroscientist at the Medical College of
Georgia at Georgia Regents University.
Hydrogen sulfide is better known for
its ability to dilate blood vessels and
maintain clean arteries as one ages.
Sen and his team found that the immune
cell interleukin 1I (IL-1I) prompts
production of the short-lived gas
hydrogen sulfide, impacting the brain
cells' ability to use food and glucose.
Sen referenced damage to the protein
PSD95 which is essential to the
framework of the synapses that connect
brain cells and which gets modified by

the gas hydrogen sulfide.

Loss of PSD95 already is implicated in
dementia as well as depression, anxiety
disorders and addiction.
IL-1Beta signaling in the brain plays
a critical role in learning and memory
however, the rapid accumulation that
follows injury appears to have the
opposite effect.
But, as with IL-1I at high levels,
hydrogen sulfide seems more bent on
cell destruction.
"It is maintained at a threshold level
in every tissue of our body," Sen says.
"But when it increases, it produces
adverse reactions."
"It kills a very important protein for
synaptic plasticity. This is a completely
novel mechanism," that he hopes will
one day translate to a novel therapy for
several neurodegenerative disorders as
well as brain injury.
Hydrogen sulfide is a poisonous,
flammable and colourless gas with a
characteristic odour of rotten eggs.
It is also found in sewers, sewage
treatment plants, pulp and paper
industry,
natural
gas
plants,
petrochemical plants, coke oven plants,
food processing plants and tanneries.

Including almonds in your daily diet

could help reduce belly fat, a wellestablished heart disease risk factor,
says a study.
A daily snack of 1.5 ounces (42
gram) of almonds instead of a highcarbohydrate muffin, eaten as part of
an overall healthy diet, improved a
number of heart disease risk factors in
study participants.
"Our research found that substituting
almonds for a high-carbohydrate snack
improved numerous heart health risk
factors, including the new finding that
eating almonds reduced belly fat," said
lead researcher of the study Claire
Berryman from Pennsylvania State
University.
"Choosing almonds as a snack may
be a simple way to help fight the
onset of metabolic and cardiovascular
diseases," Berryman said.
The
twelve-week,
randomised,
controlled clinical study, was

conducted in 52 overweight, middleaged adults who had high total and

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or
"bad" cholesterol but were otherwise
healthy.
Participants ate cholesterol-lowering
diets that were identical except that one
group was given a daily snack of 42
gram of whole natural almonds, while
the other group was given a banana
muffin that provided the same number
of calories.
Participants were provided all meals
and snacks in amounts based on their
calorie needs to maintain body weight,
and followed each diet for six weeks.
The results showed the diet containing
the almond snack, compared to the
muffin snack, decreased abdominal fat,
total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol nonHDL-cholesterol and other blood fats.
In addition, the diet with the muffin
snack reduced HDL (good) cholesterol
more than the almond diet.

Cocoa-Rich Diets Could

Improve Memory
Diets rich in cocoa flavanols - bioactives
found naturally in cocoa - can help
arrest age-related memory decline in
healthy adults, a study shows.
"The results of this study are
encouraging - they support the idea that
diet, and specifically a diet rich in cocoa
flavanols, can play an important role
in maintaining cognitive health as we
age," said lead author Giovambattista
Desideri from the University of
L'Aquila in Italy.
The study involved men and women
aged 61-85 years.
They were assigned to one of three
flavanol groups, consuming a drink
containing either high (993 mg),
intermediate (520 mg) or low (48 mg)
amounts of cocoa flavanols every day
for eight weeks.
Among those individuals who
regularly consumed either the highor intermediate-flavanol drinks, there
were significant improvements in

overall cognitive function after eight

weeks.
As cognitive function was normal
for this aged population, the study
showed that even cognitively healthy
individuals can quickly benefit from
the regular inclusion of cocoa flavanols
in their diets.
The researchers earlier found cognitive
and cardio-metabolic benefits of
habitual cocoa flavanol consumption in
older adults who had been diagnosed
with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
The new research trial was carried
out with a special cocoa flavanol
test product, designed to deliver a
standardised amount of flavanols
within a nutritionally suitable drink.
This test product is currently not
commercially available.
Flavanol content of commercially
available chocolate is variable and,
given its macronutrient profile, it is not
recommended as a health food.

Is It Ever Safe To Leave A Child?

Continued From Last Week

I'VE BEEN THERE Continued next

week
Rachel Halliwell, 38, lives with her
husband Carl, 43, a TV producer, and
their daughters Bronte, 12, Merrily,
eight, and Bridie, 11 months.
For the past year, I've left our eldest
girl, Bronte, a sensible 12-yearold, alone at home for up to an hour
while I've done the weekly shop at the
local supermarket, or ferried our two
younger children about.
To me, this isn't parental neglect but
a necessary stage in our daughter's
development as she slowly becomes
an independent person. She argued
for this freedom a good year before I
felt comfortable with leaving her - but
to me it felt like relinquishing a piece
of responsibility and I wasn't ready to
do that yet. However mature Bronte
appeared, to me she was still a little
girl.
But that changed when our baby Bridie
was born last June. Bronte, then just
11, seemed so grown-up as she helped
me look after her new sister. Letting
her stay at home without me seemed a
good way of recognising that.
The first time I did it, I felt sick with
worry and only got as far as parking up

outside the supermarket before I drove

straight home again. Just a couple
of successful trips later and it felt an
entirely normal thing to do.
I made sure my mobile was switched
on, that all the downstairs windows
were closed and that she knew where
the back door key was if she needed to
get out of the house in a hurry. "Don't
answer the door," I told her. "And don't
use the cooker." She rolled her eyes
every time, but I had to say it. When
I was her age, my parents' biggest
concern was that I didn't run up a huge
phone bill while they were out. How
times change!
(5) LEAVING A BABY BRIEFLY
AT HOME
Your three-month-old baby and
18-month old toddler are having an
afternoon nap. You need to post some
urgent bills and are gone for less than
ten minutes.
Professor Hamilton says:
In this scenario, if both children were
fast asleep in their cots and couldn't
fall or climb out, then a parent might
reasonably decide to leave them for a
short time.
If they were older children who could
wander around, leaving them alone
might be more problematic because
you'd need to worry not only about

intruders, but also about the potential

of a child having an accident or starting
a fire.
For a child of 12 and above, it would
depend on their maturity and factors
such as whether they had been left
at home much before - they may not
like the idea of being alone and find it
frightening.
Obviously, it would be much better to
have neighbours who could sit with
them while you nip out or at least pop
in to check on them.
Doors and windows should be locked.
I would never recommend leaving
children of any age by themselves for
very long.
But, for children asleep in their cots, ten
minutes alone is probably safe enough,
though I still wouldn't advocate it as a
desirable scenario.
I'VE BEEN THERE
Angela Carless, 44, lives with her
husband Martin, 48, a teacher, and
their son Warwick, 14. She says:
I never found it easy juggling my
writing commitments as a journalist
with looking after my son when he was
little. Though I worked from home,
there were many occasions when he
and I were the only people in the house
- and I needed to be somewhere else.
I must have left him to his own devices

at some point nearly every day during

his first few years. Though I never left
him alone for more than ten minutes,
I can remember the guilt of coming
back to find he had woken up and was
screaming for me.
I thought it was all part of the guilt of
being a working mother and, besides,
no one can watch a small child all
the time, can they? Then, just after
he turned five, something happened
in the safety of our own home which
made me believe it is totally wrong to
leave young children alone for even the
briefest time.
Warwick, always a difficult sleeper,
was jumping around on his bed instead
of settling down. My husband and
I, both needing to work, left him to
tire himself out. A few minutes later,
there was a muted bang and a small
cry. When we dashed to the room,
Warwick was ashen-faced, with his left
arm grotesquely twisted. He had fallen
against the side of his bed and broken
his arm twice at the elbow, almost
severing the artery. After that, I never
left him again. If he'd have been home
alone for even a few minutes when
he fell, he may not have survived.
Accidents happen so quickly and
children are too precious to be put at
risk.

Keys To Raising A Gifted Child

Love, laugh, listen, and learn. Raising
and nurturing a gifted child can be an
exciting yet daunting challenge.
Learn to be positive. Giftedness
can be an exciting challenge or a
chore, depending on how you see a
child's characteristics. For example,
persistence and stubbornness are the
same trait.
Understand the way that your child's
giftedness affects his or her needs:
Intellectual, social, emotional, and
physical needs. For example, ideas forged
by eight-year-old minds may be difficult
to produce with five-year-old hands.
Be a knowledgeable advocate. The
brighter the child is, the greater is
his or her emotional complexity and
potential vulnerability. You might have
to educate the educators.
Read aloud to your child. It is
important that parents read to their
gifted child often, even if the child is

already capable of reading.

Help your child discover personal
interests. Stimulation and support of
interests are vital to the development
of talents. Parents should expose
their child to their own interests and
encourage the child to learn about a
wide variety of subjects, such as art,
nature, music, and sports, in addition
to traditional academic subjects such
as math, reading, and science.
Encourage the support of extended
family and friends. As an infant, a
gifted child can exhaust new parents
because he or she often sleeps less
than other babies and requires extra
stimulation when awake. (It can be
helpful to have extended family in the
home, grandparents who live nearby,
or close friends in the neighborhood
who can spend some time with the
child so the primary caretakers can get
some rest and to give the infant added

-- or different -- stimulation.)
Speak and listen to your child with
consideration and respect. From the
time he or she can talk, a gifted child
is constantly asking questions and
will often challenge authority. "Do
it because I said so" doesn't work.
Generally, a gifted child will cooperate
more with parents who take the time
to explain requests than with more
authoritarian parents.
Teach your child how to find
information and resources in a
variety of ways. Gifted children
need to know, to learn, to solve, and
to ponder. There will be times when
your child's expertise on a topic will be
greater than yours, and you will not be
able to provide answers or solutions.
Be a welcome person in your child's
school or educational environment. If
educators know you first as a willing
volunteer, they will be more responsive

advertise on

when you want something for your

child.
Become involved in a local, state,
or regional parent group. Or join an
email list. Parents of gifted children
need opportunities to share parenting
experiences and problem solving
strategies with one another. And it
takes the persistence of large groups
of parents to ensure that provisions for
gifted children are kept firmly in place.
The key to raising gifted children
is to respect their uniqueness, their
opinions and ideas, and their dreams.
It can be painful for parents when
their children feel out of sync with
others, but it is unwise to put too much
emphasis on the importance of fitting
in; children get enough of that message
in the outside world. At home, children
need to know that they are appreciated
for being themselves.
Love, laugh, listen, and learn.

Reasons To Wake Up To Lemon Water

So about a year ago, I started drinking
a tall glass of lemon water first thing
each morning. The natural concoction
is touted for its beneficial effects on
your overall healthfrom boosting
the digestive system and immunity to
encouraging natural cleansing. Not
only that, but a simple squeeze of fresh
lemon is jam-packed with potassium,
vitamin B and C, calcium, magnesium,
antioxidants, and iron.
Here are some reasons to wake up to
lemon water
Promotes Healthy Hydration
Water is essential for health and
energy. However, many people dont
appreciate the taste of plain old H20.
Try squeezing a small sliver of lemon
in your waterand the tangy citrus
takes the flavor up a notch without
adding calories from sugar. In fact,
you can slice a few lemon wedges to
toss into your water bottle to promote
healthy hydration all day long!
If lemon isnt enough, you can also
add sprigs of fresh herbs, think fresh
mint or fresh basil. A few slices of
scored cucumber will also add a bit
of crispness to plain old water without
adding any calories, refined sugars, or
fake flavors. If you dont favor the taste
of lemon, you can also add some other
types of citrus. Try wedges of lime,
mandarin oranges, or pink grapefruit.
Glowing Skin
Antioxidants are plentiful in beauty
products, particularly moisturizers, for
their ability to ward off free radical
damage, which causing premature
aging (i.e., age spots, crows feet, and
fine lines). Luckily, lemon is rich in an
essential antioxidant, vitamin C, which
wards off wrinkles and blemishes, and
promotes skin elasticity.
Research from the University of
Maryland Medical Center, suggests
that the natural citric acids found in
lemons (or the Alpha hydroxy acids, or
AHAs) have been linked to stimulating
fresh elastin and collagen production
as well as encoring the shedding of
dead skin cells.
Findings link lemons to curing all
sorts of problems related to skinfrom
healing sun burn, acne, and eczema to
lemons effectiveness as an anti ageing,
wrinkle-preventing natural wonder.
Enhances Immunity
Another use for foods high in vitamin
C, like lemons, is their immuneboosting ability in the face of colds and
flu. That means, a daily dose of lemon
water will keep germs and viruses at
bay, even when those around you have

the sneezes and sniffles. And starting

off the day with a boost of Vitamin C
is a great way to ward off all sorts of
germs, viruses, as well as preventing
you from catching that cold thats
circulating the office.
Research published in the National
Institutes of Health links drinking
lemon water daily to boosting the
effectiveness of the lymphatic system.
Vitamin C is necessary to help the
immune system operate at peak
proportions, and squeezing a little
lemon in your H20 first thing in the
morning is the best, natural way to
help your body absorb a good portion
of vitamin C right off the bat.
Diminish Inflammation
Over 116 million adults suffer with
chronic pain. Medical experts pinpoint
inflammation as one of the bodys
oldest defence mechanisms against
infection, toxins, or injury. As the body
responds, excess fluid, white blood
cells, uric acid, and blood swell within
traumatized tissues, resulting in edema,
and often, chronic inflammatory
conditions (i.e., osteoporosis and
fibromyalgia).
However,
lemons
decrease uric acid in joints, helping to
prevent chronic acid built-up.
Antibacterial and Antiviral Benefits
You might squeeze lemon in your tea
when you feel a cold coming on
just because thats what mom used to
do. However, she did so because of
the huge antibacterial and antiviral
benefits of lemons, which ease flu,
cold symptoms (i.e., sore throat) and
prevent their reoccurrence.
According to studies the scent of lemons
not only improves brain function
and mood, this energizing little fruit
also protects the body from all sorts
of flus, colds, and gastro-instestinal
woes thanks to its many antimicrobial
properties. For instance lemon juice
and lemon oil have both been linked
to decreasing the prevalence of fungal,
bacterial, viral infections, and can be
used internally to fight and reduce the
symptoms of colds and flus.
Enhances Digestion
If your digestive system is a far cry
from a well-oiled machine, a daily
lemon water can provide balance
within. For instance, lemon provides
natural alkalinity to balance stomach
acids, promoting the ability to flush
toxins from the digestive tract, and
reduce gastro-intestinal issuessuch
as constipation, heartburn, bloating,
and indigestion.
In fact, a study conducted the food

science discovered that citrus juices

when paired with green tea (i.e.,
green tea with lemon) increased the
antioxidant prowess of green tea,
further simulating digestion. Findings
revealed that when green tea was
complimented with citrus juices high
in vitamin C, the natural catechins
(or naturally occurring antioxidants)
found in green tea were doubled during
bodily absorption.
Put on Your Smarty Pants
It would be nice to be able to put on
literal smarty-pants every morning.
While it turns out that lemon provides
a pair of metaphorical slacks that you
can slip on each day, thanks to the
added potassium and magnesium that
lemon delivers in support of brain and
nerve health, and in turn, improved
mental clarity and focus.
In fact, lemon juice and lemon oil
aroma links to positive physical and
emotional effects on the brain. For
instance, inhaling the scent of lemon
increased norepinephrine, the brains
feel-good chemical neurotransmitter,
which significantly boosted energy and
alertness, as well as brain functioning,
mental alertness, and the general ability
to focus.
Thwarts UTIs
You already know that lemons work to
naturally flush out the digestive tract.
The good news is that they dont stop
there; lemons also work as a natural
diuretic to flush toxins from other
organs, like the urinary tract, to prevent
bacterial overgrowth and reoccurring
UTIs as well as to lessen the aches and
symptoms (i.e., fever) that comes with
a bacterial infection of the kidneys,
bladder, and/or urethra.
In addition to drinking more water to
help dilute urine and flush bacteria out
of your body, studies show that drinking
water with lemon will alter the PH of
the blood and urinary tract, preventing
the further growth of bacteria. If you
get repeat or chronic UTIs, making
lemon water a part of your daily diet
can keep your urinary health in check
by reducing bacteria in the urine and
by preventing bacteria from attaching
to the wall of the urinary tract.
Cancer Fighter
Weve already established that one
of the major benefits of lemons is

their neutralizing affect on stomach

acid to ease digestion and prevent
inflammation. However, keeping body
acids low also helps to ward off the
growth of certain types of cancer (which
tend to grow in acidic surroundings).
This is because lemons, particularly
lemon peels, are rich in terpenes like
d-limonene, which harness several
anticancer benefits, which treat and
prevent several forms of cancer.
According to a study, d-limonene
supplementation in a group of 43
women newly diagnosed with operable
breast cancer reduced tumor markers
by roughly 22-percent. The women
were prescribed 2 grams of limonene,
every day, for a two to six week
duration prior to surgery.
Naturally Freshens Breath
Leave the store-bought mouthwash
on the shelf. Lemons are the natural
way to freshen your breath and banish
nasty bacteria from your mouth and
gums. Just be sure to squeeze a bit of
lemon in water to prevent citric acid
from wearing away your protective
tooth enamel. Studies suggest that
everything from poor digestion to
lactose intolerance can be the source of
bad breath, or worse, chronic halitosis.
A natural breath freshener, like lemon
juice or a fresh lemon wedge squeeze
into a glass of water, can rinse your
mouth, gums, and teeth of any nasty
bacteria lingering within. Just be sure
to thoroughly rinse your mouth after
drinking lemon juice, as the acidic
remnants can wear away at your teeths
protective enamel.

Groove To The Best Of

Bolywood Aerobics

Most of us love dancing. And most of us

are trying to get fit (or even fitter!). Put
the two together and you get the perfect
workout that none of us will mind
stepping out for everyday - a dance
workout! Let's add more muscle to the
equation - what if we told you that you
could groove at the speed of 140 beats
per minute, losing anything between
350 to 500 calories per session? Would
that be motivation enough? We think
so. Enter the globally popular - Bollyfit
dance routine or fitness dancing. It
involves kickboxing, body toning and
conditioning, stretching and breathing
- all the ingredients needed for a
moderate intensity workout! Here are
the excerpts from the interview:
Can you give us a step-by-step
description of a Bollywood aerobics
class?
The Bollyfit Training Workout Program
has a seven step approach to achieving
and maintaining optimum fitness level
and a healthy life. They are:
Stretching and fitness dance warmup.
The Bollyfit Fitness Dance
Choreography (Cardio Workout
mix of high and low impact
moves).
Fitness dance cool down exercises.
Strength training exercises for
arms, legs, and waist.
Full Floor workout Body Toning
exercises (ABT - Abdominals,
Buttocks & Thighs).
Stretching exercises.
Basic fitness lifestyle tips.
How many calories do one burn in a
typical Bollywood aerobics class?

Bollyfit is a sure shot calorie burner.

In a beginners class the calorie
burn ranges from 200 400, in an
intermediate class 300 500 calories
and in an advanced class 500 calories
onwards.
Is this workout enough to replace my
daily cardio session?
Absolutely. The exercises are carefully
incorporated in dance moves which
are good enough to treat each and
every muscle of ones body leading
to an overall full-body workout. This
workout also helps in providing enough
strength to your muscles so that you
remain energetic all through the day. It
is a great workout for people looking
forward to get a kickstart to their fitness
regimens. In intermediate levels, we
also include cardio kickboxing and
martial arts movements all to the beat
of pepped up Bollywood music.
Which body parts it target?
Bollyfit is a great exercise if you are
looking to tone your abs, buttocks, back
and thighs. It is a superb lower body
conditioning workout and increases
flexibility by toning your body.
It is generally seen that fitness trends
may change at the speed of lightening.
How promising is this routine?
All I can say is that, Bollyfit is a
huge success in India and is gaining
recognition abroad as well. In a way
it has taken fitness dancing to a new
level. Conceptualized by me, I have
been teaching this fitness routine from
the last 6 years and can say that if you
become a part of it once, you dont get
bored of it, unlike other workouts. It is
surely here to stay!

Truth be told, at age 40 our hair and

skin just isnt what it used to be.
Hormonal changes, weathering, and
plain old aging sneak up on us despite
our best efforts. But thats no cause to
fret! Just update your look following
these 3 important rules:
Rule #1
Pour on the TLC! As hair ages, it
naturally becomes dryer and thinner.
So give it a boost by going easy on
heated styling tools, which can distress
hair. Use heat repair products or
strengthening serums to give hair fresh
life.
Rule #2
Bangs and layers are your best friends!

Wispy fringe, side swept bangs, and

face framing layers are de-aging multitaskers. Fringe around your forehead
can conceal fine lines. Piecey texture
also hides root growth and grays
so you can go longer between color
applications.
Rule #3
Speaking of coloring, update your hair
color too! Sometimes, the vivid, edgy
colors you may have worn in the past
(think deep black or platinum) can
exaggerate imperfections and may
look harsh on some features. But a
simple switch to softer, richer colors
(like beige, brown or golden tones),
can give you a super flattering look!

Relationship

Secrets To A Long-Lasting
Marriage
Treat your in-laws with respect, give
your spouse breathing space and keep
the spark alive to build a rock-solid
relationship
Nowadays, the term 'long-lasting
marriage' is an oxymoron. With
divorce rates rising, separation has
become the easiest solution to tackle
any rocky relationship! No wonder,
fewer couples are giving their marriage
a deserving second chance.
Like any other relationship, even
a marriage needs help, every now
and then, especially when things get
difficult. True, it may be challenging
and require more effort on your part but
the rewards are worth the extra work.
So instead of ignoring and brushing
your marital woes under the carpet,
make your marriage a happy and longlasting affair.
The Big C Communication
If communication is missing in your
marriage, before you even realise it, it
will slowly destroy your relationship.
Everyone talks about honesty in a
marriage but that's only possible if
communication lines are open. So even
if you're busy with your work, children,
gym, household chores or social
activities, just set aside 15 minutes in
the day, especially for your spouse.
Use this precious time to sit and talk
about things not just about work and
family but even anything random.
Dignity and respect
"Love is overrated it's respecting
your spouse and giving him dignity
that will strengthen your bond and help
your relationship in the long run," says
Seema, clinical psychologist. You may
be married to him and he may be an
integral part of your life, but that doesn't
mean you own him. It's important you
don't dominate or boss him around,
alone or in front of family and friends.
Learn to respect his feelings and
decisions, even if you don't agree.
It's okay to compromise
Maybe it's the way we've been

conditioned, but a lot of people feel that

compromise is a sign of weakness and
so, are often unwilling to compromise.
But considering the vast number of
decisions every couple has to make
during the course of their lives, you'll
often come across situations, where
you will have to find middle ground.
That doesn't mean you always have to
give up on what you believe or think
is right. Make it more about reaching a
consensus or solution that both of you
will be happy with.
Transparency about finances
Every individual is entitled to financial
stability, so it's completely fine if you
have a separate bank account, where
you save up money. But it's equally
important that your spouse is aware
of your finances too. Whether it's
investing in a new policy or loaning
money to a friend or family member,
it's best to keep your husband in the
loop. You don't want this indiscretion
to upset him, make him lose his trust
on you or unnecessarily create a rift in
the relationship.
Bonding with your in-laws
Well, this one is easier said than done,
particularly if you aren't too fond of
your spouse's extended family or vice
versa! Still, what matters is that you at
least make an attempt to be cordial to
them, or engage in polite conversation,
whenever you meet. You could also
initiate get-togethers or dinners once in
a while. After all, if there's a strain in
your relationship with your better half,
your in-laws could be a great source of
support for both of you.
Don't let the romance die
As cliched as it sounds, no matter
how many years you've been married,
keeping the fire embers burning bright
is important in your relationship. Give
appreciation, attention and quality time
to your partner, whenever genuinely
possible. Make him feel special. If
you have children, send them to their
grandparents and go out.

Depressed Deepika Padukone Sought Psychiatrists

Help!

Deepika Padukone was depressed and

even needed medical assistance! Yes,
you heard that right. The Chennai
Express heroine confessed in an
interview to a leading daily that she was
suffering from anxiety and depression
last year. That is definitely shocking
considering that the actress has had a
successful stint at the box office last
year and the year before.
Deepika, who is associated with
WHOs (World Health Oraganisation)
mental health program has talked
about her lean phase. The Happy New
Year actress said, There is a shame
and stigma attached to talking about
depression. The Piku heroine who
has a busy work calendar initially
thought it was work stress and
exhaustion. The Tamaasha actress
confessed that she shot for her film
Happy New Year climax in this

delicate condition. And she admits

that it was with help from her family,
psychiatrists and medication that
she overcame this issue. The actor
also said, Nothing including life
makes sense to people suffering from
depression. Overcoming it has made
me a stronger person and I now value
my life much more. Accepting it and
speaking about it has liberated me.
It seems that being on the top isnt as
much fun after all. Not so long ago Yo
Yo Honey Singhs wifey too shared a
similar experience about her hubby.
Back in November, his wife Shalini
told the media, Right now, he (Honey
Singh) is physically and emotionally
so weak that he often breaks down!
Were happy to know that Deepika is
back to her happy self. And after the
dimpled beauty opening up, were sure
many others will benefit too.

'yes' to this film only because of
the content. In the film, she will
be seen as a Kashmiri Muslim lady

Film promotions will keep the actor

from attending the Republic Day
function in Delhi to be graced by the
American President.
If sources are to be believed, Amitabh
Bachchan had been invited for the
Republic Day parade in New Delhi
that will have US President Barack
Obama as the chief guest. But it looks
like the superstar will have to give it
a miss.
A source says, "He had initially agreed
to be part of the January 26 celebrations,
but now since he is expected to attend
some promotional events for his

upcoming film Shamitabh, he may not

be able to fly to Delhi and meet the
American President."
It is said that the promotional plan
was drawn much after Sr Bachchan
received the R-Day event invite and
will not able to adjust his dates.
Another source says, "He has already
started the promotions. Even though he
will be in India on January 26, it will
be practically impossible for him to fly
in and out of town in a day."
The film's spokesperson confirms the
news about Big B skipping the R-Day
function.

Shahid Kapoor Denies Getting

Engaged To A Mystery Girl
Shahid Kapoor has denied the rumor
of his engagement. As reported the
heartthrob of Bollywood and one of
the most eligible bachelors, Shahid
Kapoor is getting engaged to a mystery
girl not from the film industry on the
occasion of Makar Sankranti.
Shahid had once expressed on Anupama
Chopras TV show that he does not
want his wife to be from Bollywood.
As per the report, Shahid Kapoors
would be bride hails from Delhi and
the engagement would reportedly take
place in Delhi.
"This comes as quite the surprise
considering there hasn't been any news
of him seeing someone, but from the
sounds of it, an engagement ceremony
will be held in Delhi at some point. The
girl in question is not someone from
the industry," read the blog.
Refuting the rumor, a close pal of the
actor said Deccan Chronicle, "The
bloggers information is completely
false and Shahid Kapoor is not in
Delhi. He is not getting engaged and

he is in Mumbai preparing to go for an

award function".
If not engagement, Shahid has got
another reason to rejoice. The actor has
won the best actor award at Like Ok
Screens Awards for his performance in
Haider.

who seems to be very confused. The

whole story revolves around her,"
Amar said.
The director says the actress has
worked hard on the movie, and she
was able to pick up the nuances of a
Kashmiri character very well.
"19th January" is based on the mass
exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits from
the Valley in early 1990.

Priyanka Chopra Fights

With Kapil Sharma At
Award Show
According to the latest grapevine,
Priyanka Chopra had a fall out with
noted comedian Kapil Sharma at a
recently held award function. The
duo fought over punctuality. Priyanka
Chopra was three hours late and kept
Kapil Sharma waiting for so long.
Priyanka Chopra was to make a grand
entry on the red carpet of Star Guild
Awards, hosted by Kapil Sharma with a
dance performance and she was nearly
three hours late.
Priyanka Chopra had to change to her
evening gown for the function after the
act and she apparently took too long.
When she was called up again, she said
that she was not yet ready.
On hearing her reply, the stand-up
comedian got irritated, he threw
his earphones on the floor and said,
"Ladies logon ka yehi problem hai,
madam abhi tak tayaar nahin hain."

Riteish Deshmukh Goes

Back On His Word

In a surprising move, Riteish

Deshmukh, who had earlier said that
he has nothing more to offer to sex
comedies post the grand success of
Grand Masti, has agreed to do the next
installment of the film.
Riteish had earlier said, "I enjoyed
doing Grand Masti, but I don't think I
can offer anything more as an actor in
this genre. It was a bold film and I am

glad the film worked.''

Director Indra Kumar confirmed that
the actor has given a nod to Grand
Masti 3. When asked how Riteish
agreed to it since was not too keen to
do another sex comedy, the filmmaker
replied, "Riteish is convinced
about it and we are happy with the
development. Yeh hamare liye khushi
ki baat hai."

Bollywood star Tusshar Kapoor says

he loves the taste of Fijian kava and
feels more at ease after having a few
bowls.
Kapoor who was in Fiji for two
shows with actress Zarine Khan and
comedian Ali Asgar said he first tried
the traditional Fijian drink in Sabeto
Village and loved its taste.
"I tried 'nagona' (yaqona) and I must
say I had a lovely sleep after its
consumption. I felt very relaxed and
got over my jet-leg," he said.
"The Fijian food I have tried so far has
also been very tasty and I just wish I
had more time to spend here. Sadly we
have only one free day after our shows
to go around sight-seeing and trying
out the food and beverages here."
"Fiji is a real paradise and a wonderful
place for a vacation. I will love to

return here someday soon. And if

people say that Fiji is far, then I would
say Australia and New Zealand is also
far. I have been to those countries and
shot movies there and would love to
return here someday too."
"The people are so lovely here and
you don't feel that you are away from
home. Everyone just smiles at you and
looks after you so well. I am totally
captivated and overwhelmed with the
reception I got here."
The 38-year-old who has acted in over
30 movies from 2001 says he will
continue acting for as long as he can
and has some exciting projects coming
up.
The first Bula Desi Bollywood show
was held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva
while the second and final show took
place at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

Don't Watch 'Alone'... Alone,

Say Bipasha And Karan

Said to be one of the scariest films of

recent times, Panorama Studios' Alone
revolves around a pair of conjoined
twins.
Bipasha Basu, who has featured in a
number of films in the horror genre,
plays the ghost and the victim for the
first time. While the film marks Karan
Singh Grover's Bollywood debut, it is
director Bhushan Patel's third venture
in the genre - after 1920 Evil Returns
and Ragini MMS 2.
Says Bipasha, "In real life, I'm
frightened of ghosts, but I had a
fantastic experience working on this
film. Bhushan understood when I
opted for bare minimalistic make-up
for this film. Whatever you see for the
character of the ghost, it's all VFX."
Calling the film a passionate love story

with elements of horror, she adds, "It's

also a love triangle between two living
and one dead person."
Karan says, "While Bhushan sir and I
go back a long way, its unique story
motivated me to take it up. Also,
I'm lucky to have worked with two
Bipashas in my debut." Of course, the
lead pair has a warning for its fans 'Don't watch it alone.'
Producer Abhishek Pathak believes
that horror is a genre that still needs
to be explored properly in our cinema.
He adds, "Plus, going by the chemistry
between Bipasha and Karan, it seems
as if the movie was tailor-made for
them."
Alone, produced by Kumar Mangat
Pathak, Abhishek Pathak, Pradeep
Agarwal and Prashant Sharma.

Part Of Original World Cup Trophy Stolen In 1983

Found In FIFA Basement

A piece of the original World Cup trophy,

which was stolen in Brazil in 1983 and
never recovered, has been found in a
basement at FIFA's headquarters.
Part of the base of the Jules Rimet
trophy, it is engraved with the names of
the first four World Cup winners who
were Uruguay in 1930 and 1950 and
Italy in 1934 and 1938.
The trophy, which was handed to Brazil
permanently after they won the World
Cup for the third time in 1970, was also
stolen three months before the 1966
World Cup was staged in England.
That time, it was recovered a week later
after being found in a south London
hedge by a dog named Pickles.
David Ausseil, the creative director of
FIFA's museum which is due to open
in March next year, said the trophy had
been given a new base in 1954.
"We think no FIFA president has seen

it since Jules Rimet himself," he was

quoted as saying by the BBC.
The 10 centimetre high octagonal relic
will be displayed in the museum. Rimet,
the "father" of the world Cup, was
FIFA's president from 1921 to 1954.
In the early 1970s, FIFA commissioned
a new trophy for the 10th World Cup in
West Germany in 1974.
Fifty-three designs were submitted to
FIFA by experts from seven countries,
with the final choice being the work of
Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga.
Unlike the previous trophy which was
awarded to a country winning three world
Cups, the current trophy remains in FIFA's
possession but a replica is awarded to the
three-time winners instead.
The current base, made of two layers
of semi-precious malachite, bears the
engraved year and name of each World
Cup winner since 1974.

Brazilian soccer player Marta looks at a copy of the FIFA World Cup trophy
during her visit to the construction site of the FIFA World Football Museum
in Zurich January 13, 2015. The FIFA World Football Museum is expected to
open in early 2016. On right beside Marta is seen former coach of the Swiss
national soccer team Jakob 'Koebi' Kuhn.

In A Championship Weekend Of Traditional QBS, Seattle

Seahawks Russell Wilson Stands Out For Differences

RENTON, Wash. Of the four

quarterbacks
still
playing
on
championship weekend, Seattles
Russell Wilson is the outlier in terms
of style.
Tom Brady, Andrew Luck and Aaron
Rodgers all have their quarterbacking
foundations built around being pocket
passers first. Luck and Rodgers
when healthy both bring an element
of mobility, but its not their forte.
Wilson? Well, good luck defining the
way he operates.
He doesnt fit the mould of anything I
thought previously would be a franchise
quarterback. I think he still gets a lot
of hate and discredit because we dont
throw the ball that often. However,
what hes asked to do in this offence he
does it extremely well, Seattle wide
receiver Doug Baldwin said.
Headed
into
Sundays
NFC
championship game against Green Bay,
Wilsons post-season achievements
cant be disputed even if he doesnt fit
any preconceived notions.
After six playoff games five of them
victories Wilson has the highest
passer rating in NFL history with a
minimum of 150 attempts. Wilsons
mark of 109.6 is at the top. Hes one
of five players in league history with a
playoff passer rating of 100 or above.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson talks to reporters Wednesday,

Jan. 14, 2015, before NFL football practice in Renton, Wash. The Seahawks
will face the Green Bay Packers, Sunday in the NFC Championship game
successful and no matter what it takes,
Wilson said. I think that when youre
in those moments, you either live for
them or you fall off.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell
Wilson talks to reporters Jan. 14, 2015,
before practice in Renton, Wash. (Ted
S. Warren/AP) Last week saw Wilson
at his finest. He needed just 22 pass
attempts to throw for 268 yards and
three touchdowns. He averaged more
than 12 yards per pass attempt and
threw two of the finest touch passes of
his career. He dropped a 16-yard TD
into the arms of Baldwin, letting go of
the pass before Baldwin even made his
break.

Then in the second quarter, Wilson

stayed in the pocket and tossed a deep
ball to Jermaine Kearse for a 63-yard
touchdown that gave the Seahawks a
14-7 lead.
For the most part he knows how
to put touch on the ball and a lot of
quarterbacks dont know how to do
that, said Hall of Fame quarterback
Warren Moon, who is part of Seattles
radio broadcast team. He knows how
to make all the different throws. That
ball to Jermaine Kearse is the best
touch youll ever see.
Wilsons performance against Carolina
also countered a season where his best
games were not at home. In the regular

season, Wilson threw six touchdowns

and six interceptions at home versus 14
TDs and one interception on the road.
The three touchdown passes were a
new playoff best and the 268 yards
passing his second-best. Wilsons
timing was crisp and his throws came
in rhythm.
He gets the advantage that he gives us
and kind of the variety of ways that we
throw the football, Seattle coach Pete
Carroll said. It really adds to it, and
hes just kind of taken off with it, and
its a beautiful part of our game as it
starts to emerge.
Theres also the matter of how Wilson
plays when it matters most. He already
owns 14 career comebacks in 54
regular-season and playoff games
combined.
Whenever I talk to him, thats all
he talks about, is living for those
situations. I dont know if it all started
back in high school or whatever but he
just loves the big time of a game. He
wants the ball in his hands. I think he
would rather be behind sometimes and
have the ball in his hands and be able to
go down the field and win the football
game, Moon said.
With this team its not always like
that, but hes had as many comebacks
as anyone in the game the short time
hes been in the game. He loves that.
He loves those moments. Has he been
successful on every one of them? No.
Did Michael Jordan hit every gamewinning shot? No. But he wins more of
them than he loses and thats because
he likes it and he lives for it.

Not going to have babies

A six-year-old boy told his father he

wanted to marry the little girl across
the street. The father, being modern
and well schooled in handling children,
hid his smile behind his hand.
Thats a serious step, he said. Have
you thought it out completely?
Yes, his young son answered. We
can spend one week in my room and
the next in hers. Its right across the
street, so I can run home if I get scared
of the dark.
How about transportation? the father
asked.
I have my wagon, and we both have
our tricycles, the little boy answered.
The boy had an answer to every
question the father raised.
Finally, in exasperation, his dad asked,
What about babies? When youre
married, youre liable to have babies,
you know.
Weve thought about that, too, the
little boy replied.
Were not going to have babies. Every
time she lays an egg, Im going to step
on it!
