Rainwater
Harvesting

TOYOTA KIRLOSKAR, BANGALORE

Toyota Kirloskar Motors Ltd is a
reputed automobile manufacturing
unit and employs about 2500
persons working in two shifts. The
factory is located in Karnataka
Industrial Area Development
Board, KIADB, Bidadi,
Ramanagaram Taluk, Bangalore
(rural District

Toyota Kirloskar Motors Ltd

intends to be zero discharge
factory and hence would like to
recharge the treated effluent. The
storm runoff from the factory
would be similarly recharged into
ground. The recharge structures
would help in augmenting the
ground water table at the site.

SCOPE OF WORK
Microsite the rainwater harvesting structures to optimize recharge/
collection of surface runoff (one or many)
1) Sizing of recharge structures/ collection tanks for optimal cost
effectiveness
2) Design of conveyance / storm drains
3) Structural design of the rain water harvesting storage structures
4) Prepare construction drawings / specification for implementation by client
The water available for recharge is
ETP water

RAIN WATER HARVESTING

The factors influencing surface

runoff at any place is as follows:
Intensity of rainfall
Soil moisture condition
Type of soil in the catchment
Type of the vegetative cover
and interception by
vegetation
Slope and orientation of the
catchment
Amount of infiltration and
evaporation
The annual volume of runoff is
computed by using the formula

Q= kAP where Q = runoff; k=

runoff co-efficient depending
upon the surface of the drain
area (0.36-0.95); A=catchment
area; P=Annual rainfall

The effective catchment area

after applying the runoff
coefficient is calculated for the
design.

Irrigation water needed for the

landscape at TKM is also
accounted for during the design
of recharge structures.

The meteorological data for

Bangalore has been obtained
from the Indian Meteorological
Department (IMD).

ADVANTAGES OF RWH

The RWH potential is calculated

for maximum annual rainfall and
annual average rainfall. Thus the
storm water that can be
harvested also varies annually.

Relatively cheap materials are used for the

construction of the collecting surfaces and
containers
Construction is easier
Low cost and low maintenance
Collected water can be consumed for use
without treatment if the storage surface is
clean

CONCLUSIONS
The pond structure is the most cost optimal
structure. Implementation of a ground water
recharge system can result in a large amount of
infiltration of water per annum.

MAINTENANCE OF RWH

The water supplies can get contaminated by

bird/animal droppings on the catchment
surfaces.
Poor construction can lead to algal growth
and invasion by insects, lizards and rodents
and act as a breeding ground for disease
vectors if they are not properly maintained.
