ROADSIDE DRAINAGE CALCULATION
1.0 Introduction
The R11D package consists of the construction of roads network at Precinct 5 and Precinct 6
which include P6/U1L-1, P6/U1A-1, P6/U1A-3, P6/U1A-4, P6/U1M-3, P6/U1M-4, P5/U1A-13,
P5/U1A-11, P5/U1A-2, P5/U1A-3, P5/U1A-5, and P5/U1A-7.
2.0 Design Concept
The roadside drainage provided is basically to cater for pavement and verges runoff. The
networks are connected and will be discharged to the main drain via its sump before the
Stormwater Treatment Device (STD). This is to ensure that all runoff to be treated before its final
outlet to Putrajaya Lake or other discharge outlet point.
The drainage system along the roadside will be designed for closed system or embedded type
whereby the pavement runoff will be catch by the drop sump to the underground box culverts.
The maintenance sump will provided at each drop sump at regular interval of 10m apart.
Interceptor concrete drain, concrete V drain for berm and bench slopes, collector drain and toe
drain will also be provided.
3.0 Design Standard
The design of the drainage shall follow procedures set out in the approved Laporan
Cadangan Pembangunan Percint 5 and Percint 6 and in accordance to Urban
Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage,
Malaysia (2000).
4.0 Rainfall Itensity
Rainfall intensity is following the established Curves calculated for Putrajaya region by Angkasa
Consulting Services Sdn Bhd through the plotted drawing no:
AGHD/DUD/LCP/P5/DR03.
However, for the area where the time of concentration is less then the established 10 minutes,
the intensity will be separately calculated using the procedures established in Urban Stormwater
Management Manual for Malaysisa by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Malaysia
(2000).
5.0 Type and Drain Sizes
The minimum size of the box culvert for roadside drain is 600 x 600 whereby at the road
crossing, the minimum size shall be 750 x750.
6.0 Flow Velocity
The maximum average flow velocity shall not exceed 4.0 m/s
7.0 Drains Profiles
Generally, the grade will follow the road profiles and check for its velocity requirements.
The minimum grade for drains is taken at 0.4%.

8.0 Design Flow of Drain (Peak Surface Runoff)


The design flows of the drains determination basically derived from the Modified Rational
Method formula as follows:Q=

9.0 Drain Sizes Computation


The drain size computation is calculated based on the Mannings Formula. The procedures are
as outlined in Volume 10 of Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia by the
Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Malaysia (2000).
Based on the procedures, the design flow computation and sizes determination are based on
the following formula and the design chart 26.4

Design Calculation

The drain flow computation and drain sizes determination are shown in the attached tabulation
sheets for each sub-catchment of pavement areas.
