A G HA - Air coole d water chillers

The air cooled water cooling units of the McQuay AG HA
(high ambient temperature) series equipped with scroll and
reciprocating compressors is an extension of the range of
McQuay ALR HA units. Produced with McQuay engineering
expertise the units are able to satisfy the needs of
designers and users. The V and W condenser arrangement
and the internal components location make the most
compact and smallest footprint on the market. A versatile
and wide range of optional accessories available make the
unit suitable for all applications, HVAC, industrial fields and
continuous processes. The AG HA units are completely factory assembled, piped, wired and charged with refrigerant
and shipped in one piece ready for installation.

compressor. The evaporator is manufactured with a carbon

steel shell and seamless high efficiency copper tubes. Roll
expansion anchors the refrigerant tubes in the heavy carbon steel tube sheet. Water baffles are polypropylene to resist corrosion. The evaporator is wrapped with closed-cell
heat insulation.

The compressors installed in the AG HA units are of the

scroll type (AGZ HA 030.2 045.2) or of the semi-hermetic
reciprocating type (AGR HA 050.2110.2).
Scroll compressors
The scroll compressors achieve a high volumetric efficiency,
due to constant contact with the sides of the scroll spirals
and the total absence of discharge and suction valves. This
compressor is not only extremely reliable thanks to the
reduced number of moving parts, but has an exceptionally
low noise level thanks to the absence of suction and discharge valves and hence of the reduced pulsations of the
discharge gas. The reduction in moving parts means a very
low level of vibration. Each compressor is equipped with a

Factory testing
Each unit is pressure tested, evacuated and charged with
the refrigerant requested. It is then tested at the factorys
test bench under the design conditions specified by the
customer. Upon request, a second series of tests can be
carried out witnessed by the customer. Before shipment,
each unit is re-checked for pressure and refrigerant charge
control.

General characteristics
Cabinet and structure
The cabinet is made of galvanized steel sheet and painted
to provide a high resistance to corrosion. The unit base
frame has holes to lift the unit with ropes for an easy installation. The weight is uniformly distributed along the profiles
of the base and this facilitates the arrangement of the units
bases and the support structures. The electrical and control
equipment is located inside cubicles which can be accessed
by key locked doors.

3 03 B - 98/05 A - page 2/20

Condenser coils
The new AG HA units are constructed with internally enhanced seamless copper tubes arranged in a staggered row
pattern and mechanically expanded into McQuay lanced
and rippled aluminium condenser fins with full fin collars.
An integral subcooled circuit provided sufficient sub cooling
to effectively eliminate liquid flashing and increases in cooling capacity by 57% without increasing in absorbed
power.

Condenser coil fans

The condenser fans are of the helical type with wing-profile
blades to achieve a better performance. The direct coupling
with the electrical motor eliminates any problems as regards
the application of transmission devices and reduces the vibrations caused by the functioning. The motors are supplied
as standard totally enclosed (Insulation class F) and are of
the three-phase type; they are protected against
overloading and short circuits by circuit breakers located inside the electrical control panel.

Electrical control panel

The electrical components for both the power and the control are split into two sections on the main panel, accessed
by individual key locked doors to prevent unauthorized en-

try. The panel is manufactured to ensure protection in all

weather conditions and the doors are fitted with door-stays
to prevent accidental closure. The electrical control panel
complies with IEC204-1 safety norms. The power section
includes: contactors, fuses for compressors, fans circuit
breakers and control circuit transformer. Additional space is
provided for the installation of the various optional accessories provided to enhance the capabilities of the AG HA
units. The control section includes: the microprocessor
regulator which carries out the following functions:
- access password to prevent unauthorised access
- water temperature control
- regulation of temperature set points
- start-up sequence delay device
- compressor functioning- fan on-off control
- antifreeze control
- general alarm
- differential pressure switch or pump failure alarm (opt.)
By means of automatic safety and protection devices the
microprocessor controls the main components of the equipment such as: thermal protection of the electric motor windings, refrigerant and oil pressure monitoring. A microprocessor internal clock (optional) can be used to program the operating schedule of the chiller and the water circulating
pumps in order to meet each specific building load profile
precisely. On request, a multifunctional microprocessor
control device of the MicroTech type can be installed.

Ambient condition
The AG HA units can operate as standard with an external
air temperature down to +5C. All units can function with an
external air temperature of up to +52C.

Refrigerant circuit
The AG HA units are equipped with a complete refrigerant
circuit charge HCFC22, HFC407C or HFC134a. The circuit
consists of insulated copper pipes on the suction line and is
complete with suction shut-off valves (option for reciprocating), filter driers, moisture indicators, liquid sight glass,
thermostatic expansion valves.

Acoustic options
Two versions are available.
AG HA ST (Standard)

Selection Procedures
The procedure for selecting the cooling duty and the power
absorbed by the compressors of the AG HA units is
indicated below.
1. The tables Standard AG HA unit performance allow to
determine the cooling capacity, power absorbed by the
compressor motors with cooled water temperatures between +4C and +9C, ambient air temperatures between +
25C and +52C.
2. Although the data can be interpolated, extrapolation is not

303 B - 98/05 A - page 3/20

permitted. For conditions other than those shown in the

tables, contact McQuay Product Group.
3. The performance of the AG HA units refers to 5C of t of
chilled water. The increase or reduction of the flow rate of
chilled water produces a reduction and an increase in the
cooling performance which is negligible. To ensure the
correct functioning of the exchanger, it is advisable to
maintain the waters t within 3C 6C.
4. The performance figures are based on fouling factor of
0.044 m2C/kW. In the event of different values, the
correction coefficients indicated in Table 2 should be used.
5. The performance is influenced by air density. Table 3
gives the correction factors for the various altitudes above
sea level.
6. The power absorbed values given in the standard
performance tables refer to the compressors only. The
current absorbed by the fans is given in the electrical
characteristics table.
8. To obtain the flow resistance through the evaporator, use
the diagram on page 16.

Example of selection of an AG HA unit

Water content in cooling circuits

The cooled water distribution circuits should have a
minimum water content to avoid excessive intermittent
operation of the compressors. In fact, each time the
compressor starts up, an excessive quantity of oil goes from
the compressors sump and simultaneously there is a rise in
the temperature of the compressor motors stator due to the
inrush current during the start-up. To prevent damage to the
compressors, McQuay has envisaged the application of a
device to limit frequent stops and restarts. During the span
of one hour there will be no more than 6 starts of the
compressor. The plant side should therefore ensure that the
overall water content allows a more constant functioning of
the unit and consequently greater environmental comfort.
The minimum installation water content envisaged should
be calculated with a certain approximation using this formula:
(1) Q = P x p
25
where:
Q = minimum content of the plant expressed in litres.
P = cooling capacity of the plant expressed in W
p = minimum unloading capacity percentage
A plant with a 230 kW cooling capacity in which the cooling
unit AG HA 070.2 ST 022 equipped with two compressors is
applied, should have a minimum content of water calculated
on the basis of the minimum cooling capacity, which for this
type of equipment is 25% of the nominal capacity.

Data:
Cooling capacity required: 250 kW
Ambient air temperature: +46C
Temperature of cooled water: from 12 to 7C
Refrigerant: HCFC22
Fouling factor: 0.044 m2C/kW
Altitude above sea level: 900 m
Glycol content: none
1. The cooling capacity correction coefficient for installation
at 900 m above sea level (Table 3) is 0.979.
2. The corrected cooling capacity is
250 kW/0.979 = 255,3 kW.
3. The cooling unit to satisfy this capacity is AG HA 070.2
ST 022. This unit will have the following operating data:
Cooling capacity:
260,1 kW x 0.979 = 254,6 kW

Q = 230,000 x 0.25 = 2300 l

25
For a more accurate determination of the quantity of water,
it is advisable to contact the designer of the plant. When the
sum of the water content of the evaporator, the pipes of the
hydraulic circuit and the terminals (coils, exchangers, etc.) is
lower than the value obtained, it would be better to opt for a
AG HA McQuay cooling unit equipped with inertial tank
(optional).

Installation notes
Handling
All moving and handling may damage the unit if some
conditions are not scrupulously observed. The units should
be lifted with a crane using long ropes anchored to the
holes on the frame of the units base and by using the upper
spacer bars (see accessory 80) to prevent the ropes from
damaging the condenser coils.

Location
The AG HA units are produced for outside installation on
roofs, floors or below ground level on condition that the area
is free from obstacles for the passage of the condensation
air. The unit should be positioned on solid foundations and
perfectly level; in the case of installation on roofs or floors, it
may be advisable to arrange the use of suitable weight
distribution beams. When the units are installed on the
ground, a concrete base at least 250 mm wider and longer
than the units footprint should be laid. Furthermore, this
base should be sufficiently robust to withstand the unit
weight mentioned in the technical data table. When the
units are positioned in areas which are easily accessible by
persons or animals, it is advisable to fit guards to protect
the condenser coil guards (see accessory 32) and, when
necessary, also guards to protect the compressor (see
accessory 33).

Space requirements
The AG HA units are air-cooled, hence it is important to
observe the minimum distances which guarantee the best
ventilation of the condenser coils. Limitations of space re-

ducing the air flow could cause significant reductions in

cooling capacity, an increase in electricity consumption and,
in some cases, the unit may stop functioning as a result of
the high condensation pressure. The fans do not allow the
use of ducts which have high flow resistance, hence is
should be ensured that the output air cannot recycle itself
inside the condenser coils. The units should be positioned
such that there is sufficient distance between the coils and
any obstacles to improve ventilation and also to facilitate inspection. When two or more units are positioned side by
side it is recommended that the condenser coils are at least
3000 mm distance from one another. Smaller distances
could cause the recirculation of hot air. If the units are
positioned in places surrounded by walls or obstacles of the
same height as the units, the units should be at least 3000
mm from said obstacles. For other installation solutions,
consult McQuay technicians.

Acoustic protection
The low noise levels of the AG HA units means that they
meet most of the most restrictive regulations, thanks to the
availability of two versions with different sound levels: the
standard version (ST), the version with sound proofing cabinet on compressors (CN). When the noise level must meet
special requirements it will be necessary to pay the
maximum attention to ensure the perfect insulation of the
unit from the support base by applying appropriate vibrationdampening devices (see accessories 84 and 85), applying
vibration-dampening mounts on the water pipes and on the
electrical connections.

Technical specification
To supply and install, where specified in the project n ..... unit(s)
aircooled water chiller with cooling capacity of ..... kW, to cool .....
m3/sec. of water from ..... C to ..... working with ..... C ambient
temperature. The unit should work with electricity at ..... V. 3ph.
50Hz. The electrical power absorbed should not overcome ..... kW.
The units COP will be at least ..... at the working conditions of the
project. Part load COP will be at least ..... at the working conditions
of the project. For the units with 2 compressors the chillers wll have 2 indipendent refrigerant circuits, with the respective electronic
microprocessor will alow the starting of the compressors. Each chiller will be factory assembled on a robust baseframe made of zinc
coated steel, with zinc coated panels, protected by an epoxy coated paint. The painting of the chillers to conform to the 500 hours
salt spray test method 6061 (no. 141 STD) The unit will be tested
at full load in the factory at the nominal working conditions and water temperatures. Before shipment a full test will be held to avoid
any losses, and the units will be filled with oil and 134a refrigerant.
Units will have the following components:
General - All units are designed and manufactured in accordance
with applicable selections of the following which are equivalent to
American Air-conditioning industry applicable codes:
Rating of chillers:
UNI 9018
Construction of pressure vessel:
TV Standards (optional)
Electrical codes:
IEC 204-1 CEI 44-5 Elect. & Safety Codes
Safety Codes:
CEI-EN 60204-1 Codes
Manufacturing Quality Stds:
ISO 9001
Compressors - Will incorporate the scroll compressors to achieve
a high volumetric efficiency, due to constant contact with the sides
of the scroll spirals and the total absence of discharge and suction
valves. Each compressor will be equipped with a check valve on
the discharge to mantain the pump-down condition and hence
avoid the migration of the refrigerating gas from the condenser to
the evaporator. Will incorporate semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors consisting of multiple cylinders with suction and discharge
valves. The forced lubrication of the crankshaft bearings and of the
big end bearings will be achieved by using a gear pump which is
independent of the compressors direction of rotation. The
crankshaft of each compressor will be statically and dynamically
balanced. In addition, each compressor will be fitted with oil
differential pressure switch. Each scroll or reciprocating compressor will be charged with the necessary quantity of lubricant and
supplied with the following accessories as standard: sump heater,
electric motor protection module, discharge and suction shut-off
valves (optional for reciprocating).
Evaporator - the units will be supplied with (1) direct expansion
evaporator with refrigerant inside the tubes and water outside,
(shell side) with carbon steel tube sheets, with straight copper tubes that are spirally wound internally for higher efficiencies, expanded on the tube plates. Each evaporator will have two refrigerant
circuits one for each compressor. Testing and operation pressure,
refrig. side working pressure 15 Bar and water side 10 Bar.
Condenser coil - the condenser coils are constructed with internally enchanced seamless copper tubes having a "V" and "W" configuration and arranged in a staggered row pattern and mechanically expanded into lanced and rippled aluminium fins with full fin
collars for higher efficiencies. The spacing between the fins are given by a collar that will increase the surface area in connection
with the tubes, protecting them from ambient corrosion. The coils
will have an integral sybcooler circuit which provides sufficient subcooling to effectively eliminate the possibility of liquid flashing and
increase the units efficiency of +5 -7% without an increase in power
absorbed, and the surface area will be dimensioned in a way to

permit an air velocity not greater than 2,5 m/sec. Leak tested at 10
Bar and pressure tested at 30 Bar.
Condenser fans - the fans are used in conjunction with the condenser coils, they are of the impeller type with aerofoil polypropylene blades for higher efficiencies and lower noise. The air discharge
is vertical and each fan will be coupled to the electrical motor, with
the casing made in aluminium and supplied as standard totaly
enclosed with 6 poles and capable to work to ambient temperatures
of -40C to +55C. Each fan will be controlled by the condensing
pressure of the relevent cooling circuit. There is also an accident
protection within the motors. Condenser motors with Class F motors. Cast aluminium condenser fan blades will be supplied as
option.
Thermostatic expansion valve - each refrigerant circuit will be
equipped with all the necessary components in order to ensure the
workings and service (dehydration filter, liquid sight glass, shut off
valve, load connection and pressure switch etc). Thermostatic expansion valve regulates the injection of refrigerant liquid into
evaporators. Injection is controlled by the refrigerant superheat.
Control panel - field power connection, control interlock terminals,
and unit control system shall be centrally located in a weatherproof
cabinet accessible through a key locked door. Power and starting
controls shall be separate from safety and operating controls in different compartments of the same panel.Power and starting compartment shall be protected by a plastic cover. Power and starting
controls shall include fuses and contactors for each compressor
winding and fan motors. Operating and safety controls shall include
energy saving control; emergency stop switch; solid-state protection for compressor motor; differential oil pressure safety switch (for
each compressor); high and low pressure cut-out switch (for each
refrigerant circuit); anti-freeze thermostat; compressor lead-lag
switch; cut-out switch for each compressor; operating hour meter
(for each compressor).
Regulation of cooling capacity - each unit will have a controller
for the control and operation of the unit with 4, 6 or 8 steps of capacity control depending on the number of compressors. All of the information regarding the unit will be reported on the controller display with 32 characters and with the internal built in calender and
clock this will switch the unit ON/OFF during day time all year long.
The microprocessor permits a "soft start" function throughout an external signal will allow a load reduction of the unit when there are
peaks of absorbed current. In addition a connection to a BMS
system can be made via an "open protocol" or an interface via a
modem to a personnal computer. All general alarms can be memorised by an easy analysis of the faults and their causes.
High and low temperature function - the units will be provided
with an automatic control for condensing pressure which ensures
the working at low external temperatures down to +5C, because of
the working cycle of the condenser fans, in respect to the condensing pressure. The unit needs to be able to work with high external
ambient temperatures up to 52C and capable of starting at 46C at
fully loaded condition. Low temperature starting with fantrol (standard) will be less than 0C and with speedtrol (option) this will be
-18 C
Refrigerant piping - refrigerant circuit shall include a factory insulated suction line, manual liquid line shut-off valve with charging
connection; refrigerant filter drier with replaceable core; liquid sight
glass/moisture indicator; liquid line solenoid valve; thermostatic expansion valve, and 27 bar relief valve. Records for the refrigerant
pressure manometer and oil will be placed inside the control cabinet. Flexible refrigerant piping hot gas muffler, though not required,
can also be offered as option.
