Have you ever wanted to work abroad and believe you are ready for the challenge? Well,
before you apply for the job and pack your bags there are many things for you to consider to
help you be successful in your journey. This workshop will explore the undisclosed realities
of working abroad on an international assignment as a American Latina. Rosalee will share

to adapt to the local business culture in order to be successful. This workshop will focus on
other factors in addition to the technical skills needed by an engineer, to successfully
navigate through the ever changing global work environment and be successful on your
international assignment & travels outside the US. It will discuss:
critical role that diversity plays in product support,
benefits of communicating in the native language,
awareness of the local business culture,
awareness of the work group hierarchy,
utilizing your differences to make an impact in the business,
and how diversity helps challenge the group think process that many times plagues our
businesses.

Stop in to learn how this critical first step is crucial to achieving successful
outcomes, both in the workplace and in your personal life. Following the workshop,
you will have the opportunity to engage in an open and interactive Q&A on several
other professional development topics of your choice.

Many people dread negotiations whether big or small or at home or work.

This talk will help you overcome this fear by realizing that a successful
negotiation is a collaborative and open conversation, not a confrontation.
Successful negotiators find creative and collaborative solutions where each
side achieves their best outcome and relationships are built not destroyed.
There are four keys to a successful negotiation: (1) solid preparation on
your interests and the other sides, (2) open sharing based on interests not
positions, (3) active, solution-oriented listening, (4) creative options that reframe the issues to find a win-win.

As graduate admissions become increasingly competitive, this workshop will

provide insights on the quality and characteristics of the student that graduate
departments in STEM recruit and admit to the programs. Strategies on how
undergraduate students can effectively position themselves to become the "total
package" student will be presented. Additionally, valuable factors such as location, Dr. Kevin Pipe
funding availability and graduate resources (i.e. research, advisor, housing, etc.)
must be considered during the application process. Therefore, useful resources
and opportunities at universities and networks that enable the student to identify the
best graduate programs in their research field of choice will be presented. By the
end of the workshop, participants shall know how to become a competitive
candidate and know the multiple factors to consider when identifying the best
graduate programs in their field.

Dr. Martha Cantu, Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Texas Pan
American, has been invited to talk about different ways to keep involved with
student organizations. The focus of the workshop is to motivate professors and
inspire them to find some extra time to dedicate to their chapters. We are
convinced that the support and guidance are essential for the success of any
student organization.

use what is learned from the process to advance through the daily struggles
of work and personal projects.

Four years ago, 40mpg was the new 30. Now 50 is the new 40, with 60mpg
just around the corner. Customer expectations for fuel economy are now
set by the city/highway label delta. While this difference exists in testing and
on road for conventional vehicles, HEV's may not have this difference in
testing but on road variation remains.
Incremental refinement of Hybrid Electric Vehicle components and controls
and further increases in engine efficiency are paramount to achieving
additional FE gains. Other challenges include reducing losses during cold
operation and the trade-off between fuel consumption and climate
performance under all ambient conditions.

academics, experiences, etc. are very similar. Key components of the graduate
program application are addressed in detail during this workshop. Emphasis will be
placed on sections of the application that make students the most competitive and
be distinguished from their peers. Methods of how to manage multiple graduate
school applications and requirements will also be discussed. By the end of the
workshop, participants should be able to develop a step-by-step plan/timeline to
complete a competitive application for the graduate program that best suits them.

Various funding opportunities exist for students pursuing an advanced degree in

STEM. Successfully obtaining external and internal funding sources can impact the
admission process and life style during the graduate program, and vice-versa.
Therefore, being aware and taking advantage of the financial opportunities is
valuable when pursuing an advanced degree. The various internal and external
fellowships, graduate assistantships, etc. will be discussed in detail during this
workshop. By the end of the workshop, participants should be aware of the various
and valuable funding resources available in STEM graduate programs and how to
start applying to said resources.

graduates how to take a modern product from conception to delivery.
Honeywell would like to provide an entertaining and informative workshop on
how to take a product through an entire engineering development life cycle.
Through illustrations, videos, live demonstrations, diagrams, and dialog we
will walk through the Honeywell life cycle comprised of 7 phases using real
product examples: a smart liquid crystal cockpit display and a flight
management systems software license product. The emphasis will be on
the key engineering development cycles: Planning and Specifications,
Development, and Verification & Validation. This will provide a great
overview of the challenging and captivating engineering tasks associated
with bringing a product from concept to delivery while providing awareness
to other Honeywell products and emphasizing that we do more than just
Thermostats.

Successful admission to the STEM graduate program(s) of choice is a great

milestone. If admitted to multiple programs, selecting the STEM graduate program
can be a challenging decision. Upon selecting the program, the greater challenge
Dr. Mark Kamimura
becomes being aware of the necessary strategies and tactics needed to be
successful in graduate school and obtaining the career path of choice. The multifaceted skill sets that a student has to quickly learn and leverage to thrive in the
graduate school environment will be presented. By the end of the workshop,
participants will be aware of the necessary skill sets and knowledge they want to
obtain during their graduate education to be successfully prepared for their future
career.

This time will be allocated to receive feedback and suggestions from Chapter
Advisors on how SHPE can strengthen such role. We would like Advisors to share
their successes and the areas where they seek improvement. The committee
would also like to recognize the effort made by chapter advisors and present
awards to winning advisors nominated by their own chapter members.

High Performance Cultures create an environment with a unique personality and

with a passion for performance. Its about empowerment, about forging a strong
culture of long-term direction and purpose. High performance organizations are
consistent and they adapt and respond to change. These environments have an
edge in innovation and creativity which ultimately results in a dramatic financial
advantage. The company culture is at the heart of the competitive advantage.
Clearly defining what winning looks like, setting stretch goals, connecting to the
big picture, developing an ownership mentality, obsessively identifying and
multiplying talent, and purging low performance. Its no secret that highperformance cultures thrive in people excellence and ethics in business.

This highly interactive workshop will cover today's Marketing strategies and
associated requirements from Small Business to Fortune 100 Organizations.
