History of Animation

1900 - James Stuart Blackton, one of the co-founders of the Vitagraph


Company stop action photography = camera is stopped, the change is
made, and the camera is started again. Inspiration for Humorous Phases
of Funny Faces Stop Motion photography.
Emile Cole Fantasmagorie=first film comprised solely of animation.
=was characterized by dream-like sequences and
strange metamorphosis.
The Man in the Moon= combination of live action and

animation.

Winsor McCay (late 1960s) produced few films but with high quality.
Drew comic strips and also drew world of fantasies
like Cole.
Little Nemo in Slumberland = first film made,
official title: Winsor McCay: The famous
cartoonist of the N.Y. Herald and his Moving
Comics = Blackton directed the lice action scene
and the film was released in April 08, 1911
How a Mosquito Operates = So realistic that
McCay was accused of tracing from photographs, he
responded with:
Gertie the Dinosaur = live stage act where McCay
animated himself and interacted with Gertie.
John Randolph Bray originally a reporter on comic strips on various New
York papers.
The Artists Dream (1910) = first animated
cartoon made in the U.S. by modern techniques was
the first to use 'cels' - transparent drawings laid over
a fixed background.

Ko-Ko was soon replaced by Betty Boop.

Oswald The Rabbit = became one of the most


popular cartoon series. However Disney did not own
the rights and the character was taken away.
Mickey Mouse = first appeared in the silent films:
Plane Crazy and Gallopin' Gaucho.

Willie = Mickeys first animated film with
sound.
= Pluto, Goofy, and Donald Duck
joined Mickey.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves =
December 24, 1937
May 29, 1941 = 1/3 of artists went on strike.
