Introduction
This booklet is a supplement to the Getting Started handbook as well as the Bocconi Fact Sheet
(www.ir.unibocconi.eu/inexchange and click on fact sheet) and Bocconi website for Exchange Students
www.ir.unibocconi.eu/inexchange. While the Handbook supplement contains specific program information,
Getting Started contains information relevant to all students on Indiana University Overseas Study programs. The
Bocconi exchange website offers important information about the Exchange program and living in Milan. Please be
sure to consult the exchange website and the Bocconi Fact Sheet as well as the Getting Started handbook in
preparing for your semester in Italy. All booklets should be used now as you prepare to leave and later while you
are abroad. Since most student questions are addressed in these handbooks, please consult them before calling the
Office of Overseas Study or the International Programs Office in Kelley.
Milan
Bocconi is located in the northern city of Milan, a metropolitan area of 3 million people. Milan is a lively and
cosmopolitan city which is continuously evolving and offers a wide choice of entertainment and sights. In Milan
one can see sights from the Duomo, the fourth largest church in the world, to the Teatro alla Scala, Milans famous
opera house. Outside of Milan, the Mediterranean, the Alps, and Italys nicest lakes are only a few hours away.

Before You Go
Application Procedures
Once accepted to the exchange program, you will receive a PIN and PASSWORD with which you can access the
online application. Complete all sections of the online application by the deadline stated in your acceptance email.
This procedure will include housing registration and an option to register for the Italian Language Course.
In addition to completing the online registration, you will also need to submit the following documents to the
International Student Desk:
-

CV (resume)
Academic grade report
3 passport sized pictures
The original data protection code form (printable at the end of the online registration), filled in and signed

The deadline for submitting these documents usually falls in the second half of the semester. All documents can be
submitted via email.
Visa
Students must apply for and obtain their visa prior to arrival in Italy. The application process can take up to 1-2
months so it is recommended that students allow plenty of time to obtain their visa. Students are recommended to
apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa if they plan to visit other European countries of the Schengen area. For
more information, visit http://www.ir.unibocconi,eu/inexchange and click Settling in Milan.
The visa application procedures can vary from state to state so you will need to identify the correct consulate for
the state where you have residence and apply through that office. For Indiana resident or international students
studying at Indiana University, you will need to apply through the Italian Consulate in Detroit.
Italian Consulate in Detroit:
http://www.consdetroit.esteri.it/Consolato_Detroit/Menu/I_Servizi/Per_chi_si_reca_in_italia/
In the past most students have been required to apply to the Detroit consulate in person; however, you can now
have your visa application documents reviewed by a vice honorary consulate staff member in Indianapolis and
then send the visa application on to Detroit to be processed. In these cases, students do not need to appear in
person at the Consulate in Detroit.
If you choose this option, you would go ahead and prepare your visa materials and then make an appointment to
meet with the Honorary Vice Consulate in Indianapolis who will review your materials and sign and stamp your
visa application. Once that is complete, you would mail your materials to the Italian Consulate in Detroit.
Please keep in mind, you will need TWO U.S. Express Mail envelopes if you meet with the Honorary Consulate
since you will be mailing the materials to the Consulate and they will need to mail your passport back to you.
If you would like to make an appointment with the honorary consulate in Indianapolis, you should contact Mr.
Roland below. You may also want to ask him about processing time just to be sure you would receive your visa in
time and there would not be additional delays utilizing this option.

Health Insurance
In Italy, the National Healthcare System is provided by a public healthcare service (ASL) (see p. 14). Foreign
citizens with a permit of stay may apply for this service. Universita Bocconi does not require international students
to purchase special health insurance, but all non-EU students must have health insurance coverage when applying
for the study visa and Permit of Stay (once in Italy). For more information, visit
http://www.ir.unibocconi,eu/inexchange and click Settling in Milan.
As a part of the IU exchange program, you will have health insurance and will receive your health insurance card
before you go.

Housing
Bocconi Residences
For detailed information about Bocconi housing options, visit www.ir.unibocconi.eu/housingisd. The ISD offers
students some short and long term housing solutions at Bocconi dorms (mainly the Arcobaleno Residence).
Exchange students can only apply for housing through the online application procedure. You will be required to
pay a deposit at the time of registration. If you are not assigned to a Bocconi dorm, your deposit will be returned
upon your arrival in Milan. If you stay in a Bocconi Residence, you must pay the rent on a monthly basis by the end
of the previous month.
Best Bets:
Arcobaleno Residence: Choose this dorm if you arent completely comfortable with your Italian language ability.
Rather than a majority of Italian students, this dorm is more international, and English is spoken more often.
However, Arcobaleno is farther from Bocconi (20-25 min tram ride) and the city center (25-30 min tram ride). Past
participants recommend this dorm.
Dubini Residence: Choose this dorm if you are comfortable with your Italian language ability or if you want to
significantly improve your speaking skills. This dorm has a majority of Italian students and is located closer to
Bocconi and the city center.
To take a virtual tour of Bocconi Residences visit www.unibocconi.eu/virtualcampus.
Milan Apartments
Some students choose to live in an apartment during their semester in Milan. If you plan to search for an
apartment upon your arrival in Milan, Bocconi has established agreements with some hotels for short-term
housing. Be sure to ask about weekly rates as they are often less expensive. Students must contact hotels directly to
book accommodation. We recommend students book these short-term accommodations at least 4 weeks in
advance. The following links offer special prices for Bocconi exchange students so please remember to specify

Getting Around
Milans public transportation service is managed by Azienda Transporti Milanesi (ATM) and offers 3 underground
metro lines, 20 tram lines, 93 bus lines, and 3 trolley bus lines. Students can purchase the urban monthly daystudents pass for 10.00 (one-time fee) and then an additional 17.00 for each monthly charge. The monthly pass
allows you to travel without limit on the whole Milan urban network. To get the monthly pass you must bring the
following documents:
-

A passport sized photo

The filled in self-certification form (students can find it at all ATM Point offices and authorized outlets)

Students can get their monthly pass at the following address from Monday to Saturday 7:45 am to 7:15 pm*:
ATMPOINT
Galleria del Sagrato
M1/M3 Duomo mezzanine station
Tel: 800 808181
*Expect long lines when getting your pass.
You can pay for the monthly pass through a bancomat (ATM cash machine) or by credit card (except American
Express and Diners). You can go to a tabacchi to pay for another month of your card. When using your monthly
pass, be sure to validate the card at each trip. ATM workers will fine you about 50 if you dont validate.
Other ways to travel around Milan include Radiobus, bicycles, and taxis. Radiobus is a reservation only service that
runs from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am and picks up the client and takes him to his destination.
Taxis
The fares for Milan taxis are subject to change so be sure to read the notices placed inside the vehicle. Depending
on the time of day, you may have to wait 5-10 minutes for the cab to arrive. When you order a cab, the operator
will tell you how long you will have to wait. Be sure to listen to this number as you will be charged for this time.
Also, you will be charged for extra luggage. If you take a taxi to Malpensa, make sure it has the sticker Taxi
autorizzato per il servizio aeroportuale Lombardo (taking the Malpensa Express is cheaper and a better idea).
This means the rate for this taxi is adjusted for this route and you will pay the displayed fare. Other taxis without
this sticker may double the fare. If you are unsure of the price, ask the driver for an estimate before leaving. In
addition, you cant flag down a taxi; you have to go to designated taxi stops in order to get one.
Bicycles
Milans bicycle lanes and bike parking spaces make it easy to traverse the city by bike. If you do not have a bike,
you can rent one or participate in Milans new Bike Sharing service, BikeMi for a subscription fee. For more
information, visit www.bikemi.com

The four major cell phone providers in Italy are Vodafone, TIM, Wind and 3. Students can go to any cell-phone store
to inquire about their mobile plans. If you subscribe to a year-long plan, we suggest you ask how much the monthly
charge will be. Also, be sure to ask how much it costs to leave the plan and how many months notice you must give
(if any). Students can also buy a rechargeable card if they dont want a long term plan.

In Milan, you will enroll in four regularly-offered Universita Bocconi courses with Italian students and earn a
minimum of 12 IU credit hours. If your enrollment falls below 12 credits, Overseas Study will award a grade of F
for the missing hours. Courses may not be taken on a pass/fail basis, nor does Indiana University permit
withdrawals or incompletes for Bocconi course work. You will receive IU letter grades and the grades will be
included in your IU GPA. Although your status as an Exchange Student permits you to change your tentative course
selections after you arrive in Milan, obtain the approval of Sarah Boeving (sboeving@indiana.edu) before making
any adjustments to the schedule you discussed with her prior to departure.
Class Format
Your class size will range from about 20 to 130 students, and you will be taught using a lecture format. Some
classes may also utilize case discussions and presentations. Usually, class attendance is not mandatory, but it is
highly recommended.
