Strength of a Planet and a House: Series of articles, that will reflect key ideas from original
sources, will be provided periodically as part of helpful tips. This will help without memorizing
volumes of information which is sometimes not easy to decode from the original texts due to
binary nature of terms their definition and especially their application in predictive astrology. For
example, if we look into the Awastha of a planet standalone, then it does not make much sense,
because most of the time such planet gets very high scores in sixteen vargha( which is more
desirable ). Similarly a planet may have very weak score in BAV but the planet has very good
argala( more desirable ) or aspects and so on. The attributes attached to houses and planets get
modified in each step of detailed analysis, this is where one must know what to look for the
determination of strength of a planet or a house. The most trivial answer is the planet and the
focus area of planet( the house it is fundamentally or naturally tuned with ) have to be done
simultaneously as a single entity NOT in standalone basis. The answer one should seek is "What
is a strength of a planet and a house exactly?". The idea is to analyze couple of MOST
POWERFUL houses which will set the tone and tenure of the entire chart. We will explain
these in a series of articles for an inquisitive mind.

Know the Major Theme in your Vimshotari Dasa

Argala
nd

1. Planets or houses receive POSITIVE energy from planets/houses which are located 2 ,
th
th
4 and 11 houses away( Benefic or Malefic should not matter for now )
2. Planets or houses receive NEGATIVE energy from planets/houses which are located
rd
th
th
3 , 10 and 12 houses away( Benefic or Malefic should not matter for now)
3. The overall positive and negative feedback have to be evaluated to reach judicious
conclusion about dasa and antar lords. Antara lord has to support dasa lord by positive
Argala for better results not the other way around. Nodes have to be analyzed in
clockwise direction

Strength of a House for Dasa System

1. Focus only on the strength of each house and their interconnection to ASC/SU/MO and
th
11 house. If none of these houses bear strength then the chart is average
2. You could have in principle a powerful planet and its quite possible that it may not give
good result for the house of its placement.
3. Note that directional strength makes a planet very strong irrespective of any other
attributes, essentially the house becomes very powerful in deciding the key theme in life
4. Planets having more than 4 points( natural malefic) and more than 6 points(natural
benefic) in its own placement in BAV is deemed very strong in the house its placed
5. Check the strength of starlord of a planet, a planet is strong for a given house if starlord
is strong, and still stronger if the sublord is also strong. Strong here means no planet in
its star or its in own star
6. Argala, Planetary aspects and House aspects have to be considered simultaneously
in finding out the strength of Dasa-Antar Pair for a particular house in their Vimshotari
dasa period.

Ashtakvarga

2.
3.
4.

Analyze houses in SAV with more than 30 points for general strength of a house
th
Dusthans and 7 house fair well with lower aggregate scores
Check the points in BAV of Karaka for all the improving houses for which its a Karaka
Analyze each planets BAV for understanding strength of planet in each house, correlate
with Shadbala, Awastha, Vimshopaka and Vaiseeshkamsa bala to get better idea of
planets positive and negative attributes for a given theme. Placement in divisional charts
is already factored here with certain weightage in the scheme of things.
5. Once you know the major theme of the planet in the chart then work out the existence of
yoga connections and other planetary aspect which are not factored in Ashtakvarga
6. Wait for proper Vimshotari period for the theme of the planet to be realized OR look out
for transits to this planet for mundane analysis

o Daily Transits to Ashtakvarga

1. A planet can contribute at most eight points to a house in BAV. You can use any chart
natal or divisional chart to check PAV of planet to see whether the planet contributed to
the house in question. If the planet has contributed towards the house then the transit of
the malefic planet to this house will have adverse impact, provided that the house has
less than three points. This is used to analyze the transit effects of malefic planets only.
Nothing is needed for benefic transit so long as the planet has more than four points the
outcome is good.
2. A house in BAV of any planet having more than four points is beneficial in transit. Use
MA BAV to study MA transit and JU BAV to study JU transits and so on. Malefic transiting
a zero point house is always adverse.
3. Most of the time many planets simultaneously transit a given houses, in such cases its
better to use SAV. Houses having points more than 30 points will fair pretty well and no
need to worry
4. Moon should not be transiting a house with less than 28 points during auspicious
ceremonies; also MO should not be transiting in its BAV with less than four points in an
auspicious house. This quick technique is partially useful for fixing muhurt in addition to
proper JU/MO/SU transits to navamsa or at stellar level

Quick D9(Navamsa) Analysis

th

1. Major theme here is ASC/ FORTUNE (9 house) and Karaka is Venus. JU/SU are
important in each vargha for spiritual analysis or luck factor
2. Remember that 12/8/6/3 houses are considered malefic(in descending order) in D9
3. Analyze only natal chart and use navamsa chart as a reference chart for a feedback to
natal chart
4. Focus in a house lord or a planet of interest in natal chart to ensure proper connectivity of
D9 and D1 charts
5. Check the placement of planet in navamsa chart and mark the sign &lord of the house
6. Go back to natal chart and see where this sign or planet falls, these houses will do good
if not connected to dusthans
7. Jaimini theory goes one step further and says NEXT house to the one obtained in step 5
gets all the power in the world
8. ASC/Planets from natal chart who map into the benefic navamsa of ME/VE/JU/MO are
auspicious, still better if they make to puskara navamsa and at their best in puskara
bhaga
9. Vargottam(in same sign) planets are powerful if the planet is in auspicious navamsa
10. Conjunction of planets is judged for novile aspect analysis, planets 40 apart(or multiple
of 40) in natal chart will show up as conjunction in D9 chart. Novile aspect is good if the
conjoining planets are friendly.

house in natal chart will create havoc. This is the first navamsa of 8 cusp in natal chart,
so one needs to be careful while applying the rule in Placidus system. This rule when
th
applied to any planet (karaka) in natal chart and its associated 64 navamsa (1st
th
navamsa of 8 cusp relative to the planet) will give an adverse result for that planet
during a transit by malefic, essentially planets Karakatwa suffers. The navamsa of
th

Muhurta (Auspicious) Timings by D9(Navamsa chart)

puskara bhaga which is the best placement. Puskara bhaga is superior to Puskara navamsa

Planets in puskara navamsa in dusthan give wealth but not happiness
4. Transit of JU/SU/MO to these special points or puskara navamsa connected with good houses
ensure proper timing of an auspicious events
5. One may combine to cross check KP Muhurta method, Ashtakvarga transit method and Navamsa
method to ensure accurate Muhurta Timings for major events and ceremonies
