BA&BEd Reflection and Self-Evaluation Document

Observee / Observer: Ms. Daisy Moh

School/Class: CCC Ming Kei College, Form 2 EN2
Number of students: 21
Date of Observation: 4th April, 2014
Focus of lesson: Nouns with or without articles

What worked well and why? What effect did these strengths have on your students?
I think the second part of the lesson which requires students to identify when they
should or should not use an article worked quite well. Students were able to use their own
language knowledge to recognize the situation when they should or should not use an
article. I believe that students would get a more permanent memory when they figure
things out themselves.
Some immediate examples raised were also able to test for students
understanding. Teachers choice of examples from students mistakes could also raise
students awareness.
What did not work so well? Why? What was the effect on the students?
There were quite a lot of elements that didnt work quite well in the lesson. First of
all it was the delivery of instruction. The instructions were not given in a very clear manner.
Students were quite distracted by the materials and couldn't quite understand what they
had to do until the teacher approached them one by one.
The overall coherence of the lesson was not well planned. The activities were so
separated to an extent that students couldnt see why they had to do one activity after
another. Thus they also lost the motivation to work towards the end of the lesson.
The lesson also lacked challenges. Most of the tasks were quite similar to the
others filling in the blanks. The tasks were too easy for some of the high achievers in
class.
Overall speaking, I think the lesson was quite unchallenging and too
straightforward. Although the content knowledge was delivered to students, students would
definitely lose interest and motivation if they dont find the lesson interesting and
challenging to them, and will become complacent about themselves.
What would you do differently if you were to do the lesson again? Why? What would
be the potential effect on your students?
First I would rearrange some parts of the lesson and make a better transition from
one activity to another.
For instance, in the first part of the lesson, I could let students fill in the lyrics before
they heard the song, since it mainly focuses on the use of articles only, but not the content,
meaning that students should be able to do it. The song can be used to confirm students
answer instead.
Furthermore, in the last activity, I can include more flexibility by allowing students to
create their own descriptions of the pictures since they have already known what happens
in the story. It would be a good chance for group work if I allow each group to work on a
different part of the story and put them together after each group has finished.
Second, in order to engage the whole class to work during the activities, I could
make a better use of the blackboard to let students write on the blackboard so the whole
class and the teacher can see their answers. This can ensure that they had really tried to
work in the activity and it also allows teachers to give the prizes to students more fairly.

In general what are your strengths?

I think one of the strengths is the choice of materials. The materials were able to
arouse students interest and were quite suitable to be used for teaching the target
grammar item.
Another strength should be that the concept of the grammar item was presented in
quite a systematic way, which may help students to understand the grammar more easily.
In general what are your priorities for further development?
I need to build up a more affirmative image in front of students, as it is apparent that
I had a hard time in managing students classroom behaviors, which should come first
before arranging any in class activities.
Another thing is that I should include more interactive activities in class which really
challenge students to use their neurons, move around, use English and work towards a
goal. This would help build up a more collaborative and spontaneous classroom in which
students would motivate each other to learn.
Note: Please email your reflection to the supervisor as soon as possible after the lesson within two days.
Also please keep your copy of this reflection and the supervisors feedback sheet in your portfolio together
